Arnav pressed his foot gently on the accelerator, an air of panic still in his wake.
The moment of the possibility of losing Khushi and the baby had been excruitating, how will he be able to handle it if it really happened? How could he possibly tell her about Babu-ji?
Arnav gulped, am I being selfish? He questioned himself.
'She will find out sooner or later," he heard his own words echoing in his head.
"Arnav-ji," Khushi chimed next to him, watching his iron-like grip on the steering wheel, "I'm fine, we're fine," she added, placing a hand over her stomach. This made him smile slightly.
"Plus, Babu-ji will be well soon and everything will be back to normal," she added, positivity flowing through her, making Arnav's face fall.
She was deep in the realm of happiness, what if she got too deep, would it be more painful for her to get out of the fantasy world he was helping her build? He thought to himself.
Everything will be fine, Khushi thought to herself in an attempt to totally convince herself as well. She couldn't stand it if something was to happen to Babu-ji, and nothing will a fierce voice in Khushi's head said, vanishing the possibilities of it occurring in her mind.
She smiled again, pulling up the barrier to the grief that threatened to destroy her little world.
It was not totally dark outside, the moon having little effect to illuminate the gloomy clouds that enclosed the cold night sky.
Arnav parked the car in the driveway and turned it off, the headlights turned off, and so dispensing them into darkness.
The sounds of the rustling leaves brushing against one another was the only thing audible as the outline of them were seen fanning to the winds rhythm.
Arnav made no attempt to move out of the car, and so Khushi followed his lead, confused.
"Arnav-ji, wha-"
"Khushi," she heard him say, the tone of his voice rising goose bumps, he sounded...scared? She could not completely see him, the dim lighted street limiting her vision.
"What's wrong?" She asked, placing a hand on his cheek, her heart hammering into her chest.
"Khushi, I'm '" his voice was going to break with the strain of trying to keep it under control, to stop it from shaking. He had to tell her about Babu-ji, no matter how much it hurt.
He would be there for her, today, tomorrow and always.
Suddenly the sound of the front door opening made them both jump, making Khushi withdraw her hand immediately.
"Hello, hi, bye, bye," Mami's head poked out, "is everything okay?"
Khushi got out of the car, followed by Arnav.
"Oh ho," Mami said, giving them a grin.
"No, Mami, actually-"
"No explanations pleaje," Mami replied."come on in."
Khushi glanced at Arnav, his expression clearer now, yet somehow masked. He seemed fine.
"Yes, Mami," Arnav replied, indicating for Khushi and him to follow.
They followed Mami into the lit sitting room, Nani, Di and NK placed on the sofas, rising as Khushi and Arnav walked in.
"Khushi bitya, how is your Babu-ji?" Nani asked.
"He's okay, Amma said they would keep him under observation and then they would discharge him," Khushi replied, trying her best to have faith in those words.
He'll be fine, Khushi, she told herself silently.
"Oh that's good, we'll go see him tomorrow, hai na Anjali bitiya?" Nani said, glancing at Anjali, whilst Anjali nodded, smiling.
"He'll be fine,Khushi-ji, just don't you pershin," NK said, in an attempt to be apart of the serious conversation.
"Perishaan, Nanhe-ji," Khushi replied, giggling.
Arnav felt like he was watching all the from afar. The false hope was surrounding everyone, and here he stood, not wanting to be the bearer of bad news.
"What happened, Nanav?" NK asked, tilting his head to get a better view of Arnav.
Khushi whipped around, frowning as she got a glimpse of a worrisome state, only for Arnav to force the ends of his lips up.
"Nothing, Nk. Di...is dinner ready?" Arnav said, averting Khushi's gaze.
"Yes, let's go eat." Anjali replied.
"Where's Jiji?" Khushi asked.
"Oh, Akash called and said they would be staying at Buaji's house." Anjali replied.
"Oh." She replied, frowning, why didn't she tell her at the hospital.
"Let's eat," NK persisted, pushing the question out of Khushi's mind.
They settled to the golden dining table, NK rubbing his stomach, emphasising his hunger, whilst Mami muttered on about the wrong shade of nail varnish that she had bought today and Di and Nani were discussing what time they should leave tomorrow to go to the hospital.
Khushi laced her fingers with Arnav's under the table, whispering, "are you okay?"
"I'm fine, don't worry-"
"But, what about-"
"We'll discuss it later," Arnav replied, looking into her chocolate brown eyes, "it's nothing urgent."
Hariprakash began to place the dishes on the table, Khushi rose to help, only to be softly pulled down, "no". Arnav said, disapprovingly.
"Yes, Khushi bitiya, in this condition you should be relaxing," Nani said, agreeing.
Khushi nodded, placing her hand on the bump.
"That means you both are going to be eating plenty," Arnav said, spooning curry on her plate, followed by another and another.
"Stop!" Khushi protested, her eyebrows rising with each added spoonful of curry added to her plate.
"There's two of you, so you're going to be eating double," Arnav said, simply, raising an eyebrow, as if daring her to argue.
"Fine," she huffed, smiling slightly.
"Good." He replied, sending her a quick wink.
How quickly Arnav had fell into the happiness that surrounded them, forgetting about Babu-ji's soon departure.
"Remember Arnav, we have to go to the hospital tomorrow," Khushi said, beaming at him.
Arnav's heart fell as he was pulled out of happiness.
"Why do you look so worried?" Khushi said, confused, everyone staring at him. "It's my monthly scan."
"Oh," Arnav replied. "Th-then we should see Babu-ji," he added.
"Yes, but don't you have a meeting tomorrow?" She asked.
"No I'll cancel," Arnav said, shaking his head.
*******************************************
Khushi went up to their room, closing the doors behind her. This was the first time she had been completely alone since they had gone to meet Babu-ji. She gazed up at the sky, focusing on the stars.
What if something happens? She thought, her bottom lip quivering, she wouldn't be able to handle it, what if the heartattack was like a warning before the storm was to come.
No, stop, STOP! She thought. Nothing is going to happen, nothing is going to happen she chanted in her head, once again covering the feeling that something bad was to come.
She quickly changed, the fight between positivity and dread continuing. She looked into the mirror, her eyes falling on the little bump, allowing the little creature to spread happiness all over her body- allowing positiveness, and bliss to overtake her, stopping the quivering-for now.
*******************************************
Arnav made his way to their room, deciding he would tell her tomorrow. He felt cowardly as he was relieved for the delay.
He entered the room looking out for her, finding peace when he saw her looking in the mirror. He approached her silently, wrapping his arms around her waist, whilst coming into view through the mirror. She smiled at him through the mirror. He pressed his cheek to her hair, breathing in the scent of her hair, closing his eyes. He felt her hand over his, as she slowly shifted it to so he was pressing onto her slight bump, through her night dress.
"I love you," he whispered.
"I love you too," she replied, turning around in his arms so she was completely enclosed in them. He kept her there, against him, not wanting to let her go.
Here was his world, right here.
He could feel her breathing deeply against his chest, knowing she was about to fall asleep any minute.
"Khushi? Let's go to bed now, come on."
She made on drunken step towards the bed, only for Arnav to put one hand under her knees and the other on her back, gently picking her up.
He placed her on their bed, inside the blankets, walking to the other side of the bed to join her, switching off the lights as he did so.
She rolled over to one side, her head on his chest, breathing very slowly. He looked down at her, runnong his fingers through her hair. He looked down at her, gazing at her beauty.
I will not break her, Arnav thought to himself, and if something happens...I will mend her.
"I promise," he said aloud, placing a kiss on her forehead before he closed his eyes.
Precap:
Arnav's phone rang next to him. He lifted his phone from the table to see it was Akash.
He answered it quickly.
"Hello?"
"Bhai..." Akash murmered on the other end, his voice shaking. "It's bad news..."
Well how was it?
Please like and comment, I will be updating according to them😊
