Chapter 2
Arnav held Muskaan closer than close, his heart battling with so much grief that he wanted to stop breathing just to get rid of the pain but he held on because there was still too much left unsorted, there were too many questions, to many loopholes and most importantly there was Muskaan, his daughter whose life, whose future depended on him. He couldn't think about himself now. He had to think about Khushi and the symbol of their eternal love, their daughter- muskaan.
Arnav brushed his tears with his hand and broke the hug staring at his daughter. He asked a sleepy hariprakash, who had just woken up and come out to investigate, to get Muskaan a glass of warm milk. He saw her blink sleepily and yawn repetitively and he knew it was too late for questions. Muskaan hadn't spoken much except answer in monosyllables when he asked her whether she had eaten, if she wanted something.
He took the glass of milk from hari prakash and handed it to Muskaan. He brushed her hair from her face as he watched her drink the milk, her eyes never wavering from the rim of the glass. When she was done, she handed the glass over and leaned backwards on the couch, closing her eyes. Arnav felt a rush of affection as he watched how his baby was trying to cope in the strange environment without a word of complaint, without a tear. His heart swelled with fatherly pride despite of the heart wrenching grief at what he had just learnt but his mind blanked out everything, numbing himself to the pain, refusing to believe that Khushi was gone. He lifted his sleepy daughter in his arms who trustingly lay her head on his shoulder and carried her to his bedroom. By the time he lay her on the bed, she was fast asleep.
Arnav took off her footwear, covered her with a blanket and sat next to her- his heart battling with so much. His mind reeled and only now he had time to sit and sort out his emotions. He couldn't believe that Khushi was gone because he knew that the belief that she was alive was all that was holding him together. The hope that he would find her was the only thing that helped him survive all these years and he knew that if the hope was gone, there would be little to keep him in this world.
There was a soft knock and hariprakash walked him handing Muskaans yellow bag and the diary. He opened the bag and checked the contents hoping to find some clue about Khushi's whereabouts but he found none. Her bag had a spare set of clothes, a towel, a Tiffin box and a teddy bear. He then took the diary and began to read. Khushi had mostly mentioned about muskaan. Her likes, dislikes and her daily routine. She had clearly mentioned on the first page that muskaan had diabetes and had spoken about the three years after muskaan's birth. The amount of details Khushi had penned down in that diary told him that she had been working on that diary from a long time and that made him curious. If Khushi was dead due to some illness then could she have planned so much before her death? Why did she refuse to give any details if she was no more? Why didn't anyone come to escort muskaan and explain him the situation rather than putting it all in a diary? The parts of the puzzle were missing and he knew time was running out. He had to find the missing pieces'fast.
