Hide and Seek
Khushi's back was plastered against the wall, the hard surface digging into her exposed flesh from the blouse, while she held her breath, her eyes wide and open, staring hard at the open door a few feet away from the corner where they were hiding.
She could hear the click of Shyam's feet as he got closer to his room, and he opened the door to his room, his steps halting for a few moments. Khushi almost visualized the cool, calculating, ruthless eyes taking in the surroundings making sure that nothing was amiss.
Khushi held in a gasp and her eyes darted back at Arnav who was standing in front of her, shielding her away from anyone's view, his chest lightly brushing against her with every breath, the fabric of the sweater soft and warm under the fingers that clutched handfuls of it.
She looked into his eyes in alarm, at the thought that they had left the laptop switched on, and he read the question in her eyes, shaking his head lightly, his hair fluttering in the slight wind that briefly swept past.
She gave out a sigh of relief, her eyes briefly closing shut, as the adrenalin was continuing to pump through her veins.
As she heard him waking around in the room adjacent to the small courtyard, where they were hiding, she held her breath again, her eyes closing shut tight, hoping that he would not walk out and catch them.
Arnav took a step closer, as Shyam's footsteps got dangerously close to the door that separated the courtyard from the room, and Khushi tightened her grip on his shoulder, Arnav flexing his muscles, as his jaw tightened in anger and frustration.
Khushi felt his agitation, and slowly raised her eyes to meet his light-colored eyes, the storm brewing in them, the muscle ticking in his jaw revealing his distress and anger at the situation. She brought up a hand and stroked his cheek, her head tilting back to look him in the eye, as he looked down at her, his body continuing to shield her from any supposed danger.
She gently stroked his cheek with the back of her hand, her fingers brushing lightly against the clenched jaw and she felt it relax under her ministrations. As he looked down at her, the anger slowly dissipating, the question arose in those eyes asking her to let him lose control and throw Shyam out of the house, seeking permission to give into the anger, but she shook her head, her eyes holding his, her hand trailing down to rest against his chest – against his thumping heart, feeling the rhythmic beat under the palm of her hand.
She shook her head again, with more conviction, and he closed his eyes in frustration, at not being able to give into the impulse of hitting Shyam.
They needed time. They needed to articulate the plan perfectly and not give into the urges or impulses to harm Shyam. He had planned his entry into the house with great care and detail, now it was their turn.
They heard his footsteps get closer to the door, and Khushi bit her lip as she fearfully looked over Arnav's shoulder, at the door. Arnav lightly turned his head, to see if Shyam would step out, and widened his stance in anger and anticipation.
Just as she saw a foot coming out of the door, she held her breath, her eyes shutting tight, her grip on his sweater tightening, bringing him closer to her, somehow hoping that they would dissolve in the surroundings.
"Shyamji?'
They heard Di call out, and Khushi's eyes snapped open, looking to the side to see the shoe that was protruding out of the door's entrance into the courtyard, disappear back into the room, and she heard him answer back,
"Coming Rani Sahiba"
Her body was tensed, and she felt Arnav shift lightly to give Khushi more space to breathe, but her grip on his sweater did not falter as she heard his footsteps recede from the door, back towards the entrance of the room.
As she heard Shyam walk out of the room, Khushi closed her eyes in relief and looked up at him, who was resignedly looking away, failure evident in his eyes.
"We haven't failed if he haven't done anything to harm him yet. It'll take time, but this time we will win" She whispered, her hand gently stroking through his hair, massaging his scalp and he sighed, dropping his head down to her shoulders,
"Promise?" He asked in a broken voice, and Khushi felt her heart clench painfully, as the irony of the great Arnav Singh Raizada asking for a simple promise from her made her lips twitch. She wrapped her arms around his shoulders and brought him closer, her face turning to the side and inhaling his scent, the spicy cologne mixed with something that was…him.
She heaved a deep breath, feeling herself go dizzy with emotions and the overwhelming feeling of love, as he wrapped his own arms around her petite frame, bringing her closer, his forehead still resting against her shoulder, his breath fanning across her neck and chest.
She nodded.
"I promise"
