Khushi settled herself comfortably into the seat and switched on the computer. As the screen booted up, her thoughts went to the man seated only 20 steps away from her.
She gazed at the red door, wondering what he was up to.
Khushi sighed and then logged in with the password the receptionist had given her. She took out Arnav's planner from the bottom drawer and immediately began filling her electronic diary with all his important meetings.
Why did the dratted man have to be so handsome? She whined in her head, her mind flitting to the way she'd seen him a mere fifteen minutes ago.
Today he'd worn a white dress shirt coupled with a steel gray waistcoat. The ivory was a stark contrast against his bronzed skin, and she'd felt like tracing the strong coloumn of his throat every time he spoke.
Khushi shook her head. "What the hell?" she muttered, just as the phone rang. It was the one on the left, so that meant it wasn't connected to his line.
She picked the device up and held it to her ear. Wait, how the hell was she supposed to respond?
Crap.
Just then, a man dressed in a pinstriped blue shirt and black trousers walked up to her work station. He smiled and mouthed some words at her.
"Mr. Raizada's assistant here" she repeated to the caller in a vain attempt, hoping that she'd read the stranger's lips right.
She had. The caller was a woman, and requested a meeting with Mr. Raizada. Now over her initial bout of hesitation, Khushi picked up the other phone connected to Arnav's cabin and hit number 1. "Mrs. Singhania is on the line sir" she told him in a confident tone.
"Put her through" was all her grouchy boss said, and he hung up. She took a deep breath and removed her hand from the other receiver, pressing another number in the process.
Not bad for a first time Khushi thought, a victorious smile making its way across her face.
She looked up to find the stranger smiling at her in an amused manner. "I'm so sorry, thank you for helping me out here" she gushed, grinning.
"No problem" he replied stretching out his right hand. "I'm Siddhant Raizada"
Khushi smiled at him as well and shook his hand with her own. "I'm Khushi Gupta, the new assistant" she clarified, withdrawing her hand.
"Not bad Ms. Gupta, pretty good at taking your first call." he grinned back at her, his black eyes crinkling at the corners.
"Well, I don't think that would have been possible if you hadn't been there" she told him, embarrassment reddening her ears.
He laughed charmingly in response to her previous statement and looked towards her "well then, you owe me a favor" he said, suddenly becoming serious.
Khushi had found that she liked this man-Siddhant, on the first glance. He had a very comfortable air around him and it had made her feel at home. Unlike the grumpy man sitting away from them-
"Wait, what did you say your name was?" she asked him, frowning inelegantly. She saw him grin, "Already wanting my name? Is my number next Ms. Gupta?" he questioned wolfishly. "You wish" she replied, rolling her eyes at his overconfident quip.
He threw his head back and laughed, "Feisty, I like! My name is Siddhant Raizada" he introduced himself once again.
"Raizada…" Khushi trailed off, surprised. "Siddhant Raizada. Younger brother of the infamous ASR and co-owner of AR Industries." He supplied for her, once again motioning for her to shake his hand.
"Aaah" she said, taking his hand. "Well Mr. Younger Raizada, my introduction remains the same boring one that I explained earlier."
"Oh I don't think you're boring at all Ms. Gupta" he replied with a devilish wink, suddenly raising her hand and placing a soft kiss on her knuckles. Khushi laughed at his blatant flirting, feeling a lot lighter for the first time since this morning.
Unfortunately for the both of them, Mr. Arnav Singh Raizada found the two people in question in this very situation. And was that a good thing?
Oh, hell no.
Arnav felt his anger emanate off him in waves, way before he had even realized the reason of his fury.
His dearest younger brother, was talking-no, flirting with his Ms. Gupta- Wait a minute. Arnav halted his thought process. How had she become his Ms. Gupta? She was only his assistant. An extremely attractive one at that, but still only his assistant.
He walked over to the cozy duo and cleared his throat discreetly. The light signal was enough. Upon hearing his arrival, Ms. Gupta's eyes widened behind the plastic lenses, her fingers hastily leaving Siddhant's eager hand.
Arnav nodded at them both, receiving surprisingly -a blush from his assistant and a hug from his younger brother. "How was London Siddhant?" he asked the young man, keeping his hand on Sid's shoulder.
"Boring as compared to here Bhai" he replied with a wink aimed in Khushi's direction. Automatically, Arnav's hands clenched.
"What about the deal?" he questioned and immediately the younger playboy's businessman attitude was back. "We got it Bhai. Sure, they were real arrogant. But we're the Raizada's, who can be better than us?"
Khushi looked from one brother to another and scoffed at Siddhant's last line. This was where they were brothers. Hypocrisy at its best. Whereas he had been accusing other men of acting arrogant, here he was proving his own with aplomb.
Maybe her scoff, or uh-snort had been a tad bit loud, because the enigmatic Raizada; the one who made her heart go all aflutter landed a cool gaze on her, "something funny Ms. Gupta?" he asked in a composed voice, an underlying threat present in his tone.
"Not at all Mr. Raizada"
"Good" was all he said in return as he turned to go. She breathed a sigh of relief as she saw both the Raizada's return to their respective places and she settled into her seat. Swiveling her chair so that she could reach the printer, she met with a pair of honeyed warm eyes. From only about ten feet away, her boss stared at her with slow intent. His gaze burned from the bottom of her heeled feet to the top of her head.
She looked away from his eyes, the intensity too much for her to handle. Taking in a shuddering breath, she concentrated on typing the letter she had just received in her mail.
Holding his aching head in his left hand, Arnav flipped through the Khurana file with his right. There was something amiss here…something the owner wasn't telling him. The record of his constructions seemed too clean. Almost as if it had been purposely glossed over to make sure that the appearance was put up right.
He picked up the phone and hit his secretary's number. "Another coffee Ms. Gupta"
"Yes sir" was her brisk response. Yet her tone did nothing to hinder the natural sexiness of her voice. What would it sound like when she came? Would it be shriller? More throaty-
"f**k!" an expletive made its way out of his mouth and he banged the file shut. There was no way he was allowing this to happen. No f**king way.
He winced as he heard her come in, that maddening scent that clung to her once again filling his room. Motioning to a rare empty spot on his table, he signaled for her to keep the coffee.
Arnav felt her turn around to leave, but the door snapped shut with her still inside. "Mr. Raizada?" he heard her say in that hot voice of hers. Concentrate Raizada! He cursed at himself in his mind.
"Yes?"
"Is something bothering you?"
The words had left Khushi's mouth in a flurry. She didn't even have a chance to think about what she had said.
She had no idea why, but the moment she had entered, she felt disturbed. The air was charged around her boss. Oh, not sexually. She would have recognized that now familiar tension immediately she thought, a rosy blush staining her cheeks. It had been something else. Something was clearly bothering him.
And she hated to see that little furrow between his perfect eyebrows.
So she had asked.
Khushi saw him raise his head and look her straight in the eyes. "Why do you say that Ms. Gupta?" he enquired of her; his wonderful gaze searing her soul.
"I don't know-you just looked tense." she trailed off nervously, anxious to end the conversation that arisen because of her stupidity.
"Ms. Gupta, will you do something for me?" her boss asked in a soft, composed tone, now no longer looking at her. His gaze was back on the file in front of him.
"Of course sir" she replied politely. However, in her mind she rolled her eyes. Duh! She was his secretary; she was paid to do what he asked. Professionally she reminded herself, as a naughty image warped inside her head.
"I need all the information you can get on Abhinav Khurana within one hour."
Khushi gaped at him. All the information? How was that even possible? She voiced her disbelief to him, and she only bristled as he smirked.
"I told you specifically on the day of the interview Ms. Gupta; don't disappoint me. Are you backing out already?"
The short hairs on Khushi's neck prickled as she heard the mockery in his tone. She leaned slightly forward and all but snatched Khurana's file off his desk. "I don't disappoint Mr. Raizada. Neither do I back out."
She saw him smirk once again and tilt his head to the side. Turning around, she pulled open his door with surprising alacrity for a woman so frustrated as she. Breathing in deeply, Khushi faced him before leaving and smiled prettily, "Forty five minutes Mr. Raizada. In forty five minutes I'll give you so much information that you won't know what to do with it."
With her smile turning into a smirk, she exited the room with a confident stride. She sat back into her station and began her work, her mind already riding high with the upcoming challenge.
Decent enough?
