Part 39

"Rey .. switch on the TV now .. Times news .. Its Ansh " a worried and hyper Akshay called up Rey in his cabin ..

"What happened ?" a stunned Rey asked , making a number of files drop from the table while desperately trying to find the remote on his table ..

"Just switch it on .. man .. " the urgency in his voice made Rey's fingers tremble while he switched on the tv ..

"We are back with the live news direct from the New York grounds where the American League finals were being played between the New York Yankees and the Detroit Tigers .. Over to my correspondent Lisa .. "

"Lisa please fill us up with what's going on "

"Yes Bill .. This was the much awaited match between the two teams .. As we all know that from last 2 seasons New York Yankees have won the championship .. this could be their third win in a direct row .. this would create history .. no other team has won 3 seasons ..

We were just almost at the end of the match when this unfortunate accident occurred .. The game has been paused for a few minutes ..

New York Yankees's star performer Ansh Singhannia and the keeper from Detroit Tigers banged into each other when Ansh was completing the run for his team ..

I along with the thousands here were shell shocked with the scene which unfolded just a few moments back .. "

Then the video of what exactly happened came up ..

"Ansh" Rey let out a hitched gasp from his already dry mouth and shivering hands which were clasping the paper weight on the table for support ..

Ansh who was running to complete the run .. he was running towards his home base .. his eyes only at the line which he had to cross .. he ran with all his might and then he flung himself to land over the base line .. at the same time one of the fielders had thrown the ball towards the keeper .. his eyes only on the ball and he hurled towards the ball to catch it ..

Bang !!!

There was pin drop silence for a moment in the exclusively crowded stadium as everyone held their breath ..

The two banged into each other with so much force that they were thrown away from each other because of the impact ..

The keeper's head with the helmet hit Ansh's right shoulder .. Ansh's knee hit the keeper in the stomach ..

They both collapsed apart and cringed and curled their bodies in sheer pain and agony ..

The medical team rushed to the ground and Rey could see an unconscious Ansh being taken away on the stretcher..

Rey 's head fell back on the head rest of his chair in exhaustion .. his whole body trembling with an unknown fear .. he closed his eyes which had been literally tearing the plasma screen with their intensity .. slowly a tear trickled down his left eye ..

He could barely hear the last few words of the reporter as she spoke "Now we have to wait and watch if this major mishap doesn't lead to the end of one of the most brilliant young players of the current time .. he being at the peak of his career at an envious age of just 28 .. Good Luck and Get back soon on the ground , Ansh Singhannia "

"Ansh .. what the hell are you doing with your life ?" a livid Rey yelled on the phone ..

"Dad .. I have no idea what you are talking about " an equally exasperated Ansh spoke back ..

"Do you know what's being splashed about you in the papers .. ?" Rey asked with concern ..

"Dad .. how many times have I told you not to believe in them .. "An uninterested Ansh answered back ..

"So, do you want me to even disbelieve the pictures posted in them .. "

"Yes .. " Ansh replied coldly ..

"Even the latest about you that you were drunk and got involved in a brawl in the pub .. you punched someone almost to death .. " Rey was really irritated now with the tone and the way Ansh was speaking ..

"Dad .. it was blown out of proportion .. he misbehaved with Kate and I just punched him once and walked out .. Its not all the truth .. Dad .. " An enraged Ansh said ..

"Oh Really .. then what is the truth .. do you even care to explain to me ?" Rey asked a bit sarcastically ..

"No .. Dad .. I really don't want to .. " Ansh retorted ..

"Why .. everything you do is pictured .. everything you say is printed .. so many controversies .. so many scandals .. still you say you don't want to explain to me .. I am your Dad .. Ansh " Rey felt he was being so desperate now .. he wanted to so much believe what his son said .. but somewhere he just couldn't make himself do that ..

"Please Dad .. pictures are morphed .. my words are twisted .. I can't help it .. and I really don't have the time to sit and explain all that stuff .. "

"Fine .. do whatever you want .. " Rey huffed angrily ..

"Yes Dad .. this is my life .. and I know what I am doing .. so I really don't want anyone to interfere in it .. " Ansh said icily ..

"Even .. " before his Dad could complete .. Ansh replied tartly "Even you Dad " and the phone clicked off ..

Rey recollected all such dialogues he had with Ansh .. they were more of arguments .. fights and disagreements .. they hardly ever talked since the time Ansh moved out of their house when he turned 20 ..

He started playing baseball professionally and his practice sessions , his matches and basically his new life was totally different from what his family led .. he decided it was time that he lived independently ..

He would come home only if there were family get-togethers or festivals that too only if he was free from his appointments ..

So at such get-togethers .. Rey distanced himself from him .. he would be just cordial with him .. and Ansh also reciprocated in the same way .. they both knew that the minute they had a conversation .. it turned into an argument and for the sake of that one person who was most important for both of them .. Kria .. they decided to remain formal with each other ..

He was a very good player from school itself .. now with his sheer hard work and determination he was selected in one of the best teams in America .. New York Yaankees .. so he made New York his new home ..

Rey never had any issues with his game .. infact Rey wanted him to pursue his game professionally and when he had taken that decision .. Rey was the happiest ..

But what Rey couldn't stand was that Ansh's new life style ..

As Ansh was the new young star player .. he had become the favourite lover boy of the tabloids .. and Ansh did nothing to stop that too .. As he started climbing the ladder of success .. there came the money .. the power .. the luxury .. the numerous endorsements .. the women ..

Rey could see the once totally focussed Ansh getting blown away by all the sudden adulation he started receiving from the media .. his fans .. ..

He was on the cover of almost every magazine .. news about him .. his link ups .. his scandals .. his parties .. his addiction for the opposite s** .. his attitude .. his arrogance .. overconfidence.. everything just splashed across everyday ..

One thing Rey admired about Ansh was that … when on ground he was totally into his game .. totally focussed .. but how long can that be unaffected by his out of the ground activities ..

Somewhere deep down Rey didn't want anything disastrous for Ansh or his career .. as a Dad he wanted him to achieve everything he had set his eyes on .. Rey knew that a sportsman's life is limited on the ground .. everything which Ansh was accomplishing now was for a limited duration .. there would come a time when he would have to leave all these .. however Rey wanted him to be on the peak for as long as possible ..

It had been over a week since Ansh was admitted in the hospital .. his condition was much better now .. he was in and out of his semi-consciousness .. Doctors had performed a number of operations over him .. especially his right shoulder .. but they all had come to a strong consensus that he would not be able to play baseball professionally now ever ..

"Riyu .. just stop crying and putting your weight on my already hurting shoulder .. if you want just get a bucket of water and pour it over me .." An angry Ansh told his over-howling and crying sister who had been clutching him from the last 15 minutes and pouring her tears all over him ...

"What the hell .. here I missed you .. we haven't seen each other since my marriage .. and now you in such a state .. and what do you want me to do .. stand afar with flowers and say get well soon .. I so want to punch you where you have hurt yourself .. how could you do this to yourself .. why couldn't you be careful ?" she asked in an exasperated manner .. how much she loved her twin .. even though they didn't see each other often now with him always travelling .. but were always in touch .. she couldn't bear anything happening to him .. and now this .. she just couldn't think about it ..

"What do you mean .. should I have seen left then right and then left like we cross the road then ran .. are you nuts ?" he so loved it when his sister who cared for him so much blasted him like this .. the same way he did for her ..

He thought how they used to fight and argue on anything and everything .. but in the end they could never see the other in pain ..

She just scowled at his reply .. "You should have seen where you were running" she tried again to argue ..

"Hey Rahul… just take her away ,man .. how do you handle her .. she is seriously crazy ?" he looked at his friend .. who was now Riya's husband ..

Rahul could only smile at the bro-sis banters ..

"Ansh .. take care of yourself .. " she said suddenly in a serious tone ..

He smiled .. " Yes .. I will and I will be at mom's place till I am totally recovered .. so you can also come and eat my head that time .. also I need a lot of pampering from you too .. " he winked ..

She grinned and nodded and hugged him gently again and Rahul took her outside ..

Ansh looked at Kria who was standing a bit far and was smiling at him .. even though he knew she was worried inside for him, but she didn't show a bit on her face ..

She came and kissed him on his forehead ..

He simply raised his eyebrows to ask her .. something he always did ..

She simply shook her head in negative..

It was always the same way .. he asked if Dad had come and she would reply –No ..

Rey had been to the hospital everyday .. but he didn't have the guts to face his son .. he would just look at him from outside the room through the glass wall …

He knew Ansh was a very strong willed person .. but he was not sure how he would take this news .. this drastic twist in his life .. his life which revolved around his game .. Rey was petrified inside to even think what would he be going through at the moment ..

Rey could only pity himself .. he felt so helpless .. he wanted to help his son .. but didn't know how ..

Along with Rey there was another petite figure who also stood outside and looked at Ansh everyday with an expression which could only be called – helpless concern for a loved one ..

She was Kate .. Ansh's team manager's assistant ..

For the initial few days Rey had seen her standing out and looking at Ansh .. but since he himself was so pre-occupied with his own thoughts that he had not talked to her .. neither had she .. Moreover it was the time when visitors were not allowed in… only family members could see Ansh ..

But , today was the 5th day when she had come and stood at her place outside the room ..

"Kate .. why don't you go inside .. Ansh has regained consciousness and he is much better today .. he would be really happy to meet you .. " Rey gently spoke to Kate ..

"Hello Mr. Reyaansh .. No .. I am fine here .. I think I better not go in .. " she said sadly and avoided his eyes ..

Rey was a bit confused .. he knew that Ansh was dating Kate sometime back .. and amongst all his so-called girlfriends Rey had found her to be the only one who was sensible and was unaffected by Ansh's stardom ... Ansh had even brought her home a few times when he had visited them .. she had gelled very well with the family .. but he didn't know what happened between the two of them ..

"Seriously today even his team mates came and saw him .. you go in .. " he urged ..

"No .. I don't think it's a good idea .. he may not take it well .. and by the way I had come for some official work .. I needed his signature on some documents .. but I can see that it can wait .. " she said still staring at Ansh thru the glass wall …

Rey could sense a deep grief in her voice .. he had really liked this girl .. he didn't know why she was so sceptical about even meeting Ansh ..

"Why don't you do one thing .. next week he would be discharged .. he would be staying with us till he is fine .. so you come and visit him there … I really want you to come .. please " he gently placed his hand on her shoulder .. he didn't know why he said that .. but he really felt after saying so ..

"Ok .. Thank you , Mr. Reyaansh"

"No Problem"

"'Mr. Reyaansh , I am seeing you from so many days .. why aren't you going in to meet him ? .. " she turned to face him for the first time .. she looked directly in his eyes ..

"Well .. " Rey stammered a bit .. "Well .. I will go when " he couldn't complete .. he turned away from her ..

"I think you need to talk to Ansh .. he needs you more than anyone at present .. he has always looked upon you .. he needs you as you need him .. but you both have the same problem .. its difficult for you to speak up what's in your heart .. .. " she said with utmost honesty .. and then smiled and left ..

The time stopped for Rey .. he just couldn't believe his ears .. did she really say that Ansh needs him .. needs his Dad ..

"Dad .. you can come in " Ansh called out from his bedroom to a restless Rey who was pacing the floor outside his room ..

Now Ansh had been home for more than a week .. but still Rey hadn't mustered up enough courage to go to his room and talk to him .. he would quietly walk outside his room thinking about his son .. he would even sometimes raise his hand to knock at his door .. but the next minute he would immediately shove his hand in his pocket ..

Slowly he opened the door and stepped in ..

He looked at his son closely .. his pale face and weak stature .. but eyes shining bright and gleaming with life ..

It was so true Rey felt .. Singhannia males could never speak so easily .. with women it was different .. with Riya, Rey would never have any difficulty emoting .. she herself would just fly and be in his arms .. when she got married last year .. she cried in his arms till her heart's content and Rey never felt awkward at all .. with Kria he had never had any problems ..

He could understand how detached he had been with his own father ..

Now it was the same with his own son ..

An awkward silence prevailed in the room .. as the two men looked at each other for the first time in recent years …

But little did they know that .. words were not required .. only this face to face encounter was just required to melt away.. all the reservations .. the questions .. the doubts .. the guilt .. the regrets .. everything ..

"Dad" it was all Ansh spoke.. he actually choked .. and Rey immediately came and sat next to him on the bed ..

" I am sor .. " But before Ansh could complete .. Rey placed his hand over his "No .. you don't need to .. "

Ansh smiled ..

"I am such a mess right now .. Dad " he looked at his body ..

Rey smiled .. "You will recover soon and you will be fine .. Son"

"Hmm .. I know I have to come out of this and I will.. " he said with determination .. which reminded Rey of only one person .. Kria .. Ansh had the fortitude of his mother ..

"You know Dad ..I have to admit .. my life till now .. I enjoyed every bit of it .. you know .. the matches .. the tension before the match .. the pressure .. the aftermath of the match .. my teammates .. the fun we had .. the crazy fans .. the female attention .. the money .. the modelling assignments .. the parties .. everything .. but now .. " he left what he was saying mid-way .. he was in deep thought ..

Rey wanted to hug Ansh so much .. the game meant so much for him ..

He simply rubbed the hand which he had kept over his for assurance …

Ansh hadn't even realised what was happening .. he was still in his own thoughts and he continued speaking oblivious to Rey …

"I will miss everything terribly , no doubt .. but there is something which I have lost .. something precious .. and I know I will never get that back in my life .. and this is all because I was taking everything for granted .. everyone for granted .. even life .."

Rey looked at him in despair .. "No .. Ansh .. this was just an accident .. the doctors have said that you can't play professionally .. but I know your will power .. I know this game is your life .. you can do .. " But before Rey could complete what he was speaking .. Ansh came out of his reverie and looked at his Dad and frowned "Who the hell is talking about the game ,Dad?" he asked .. Now it was Rey's turn to be confused .. he couldn't understand what was troubling Ansh ..

"Ansh .. " he urged his son to go on ..

"I didn't realise when this game had become my obsession .. and everything around it too .. I didn't realise that I was hurting so many around me .. I had been so mean .." he just couldn't go on as his emotions choked his voice ..

"Ansh .. is it related to Kate ?" Rey asked ..

Ansh couldn't believe his ears .. his eyes shot up to look at Rey.. how the hell did his Dad know what was in his mind ..

He immediately realised that he had already spoken too much ..

"No .. No .. " he stammered ..

And for the first time Rey did something .. which he had always expected his own Dad to do .. and he had never got that .. he went and hugged his son ..

Ansh was bewildered at his Dad's action .. but somewhere he had always wanted this .. he wanted to be hugged by his Dad .. it felt so good ..

"You can tell me .. " Rey said softly .. and sat back on the bed ..

Ansh looked up at the ceiling and he knew he needed to just vent out everything which was there in his heart ..

"I met Kate around 4 years back .. she had joined my team Manager as an assistant .. the first thing that struck me about her was that she was so genuine .. obviously apart from her gorgeous looks and striking assets she possessed .. " he smiled to himself lost in her memories ..

Rey shook his head sideways and smirked .. of course his own blood .. and then smiled and poked his shoulder to get him out of his daze ..

Ansh looked sheepishly at Rey .. ran his fingers thru his hair .. and continued ..

Rey couldn't believe that he was discussing his son's love life but he was very happy deep down because he always wanted his dad to be someone with whom he could share everything but it was never possible so at least he could be what he wanted his own dad to his son..

Ansh was shocked at himself that he could speak so comfortably with his dad ..

" We instantly hit it off together .. She was so much fun to be .. She was real .. Her feelings for me was real not fake like the other models or celebrities whom I had dated .. The others were just with me for their own benefit .. But not Kate .. And this lead me to be very protective towards her .. I tried my best never to let her pic splash on the newspapers or anything about her ..

She was with me when I was going thru a low phase .. She was there when I was unbeatable .. And all thru out she was same .. She motivated me .. Cheered me .. Teased me .. Laughed with me .. At times comforted me ..

We even confessed our feelings to each other ..

Then I don't know why I developed cold feet .. I suddenly started thinking like a jerk .. I felt that maybe I will loose all my focus on the game .. because somewhere I knew that she was the one who was encroaching on my mind completely .. suddenly I felt I was giving her more importance than my game .. another thought which irked me was ,I felt she is the unknown face … She with me .. No we can't gel for long term.. Short fling is fine..

And then I did something so mean .. I just stopped calling her .. stopped seeing her .. just cut all my ties with her .. she tried to reach me so many times .. but I just shoved her ruthlessly away from my life without even giving her any explanation .. nothing .. ..

For the last 8 months I have been such an a****** .. I can't tell you .. just to get her off my mind and not feel guilty that I hurt her .. I have done anything and everything .. I just hate myself .. " he paused for a moment ..

"You know Dad .. I realised that when she was beside me .. I had the best time on the ground and off it too " He was grim .. he was totally shattered .. he only knew how he said all these to his Dad ..

But .. Rey understood him .. He wished he was with him before ..

He simply patted on his shoulder ..

"I miss her Dad .. miss her more than anything .. " he said with anguish .. looking at his Dad ..

"If you know what importance she holds in your life then just show her how she makes you feel .. reach out to her .. and win her back into your life"

"How can I .. after all I did .. she must have moved on by now .. " he said dejectedly ..

"Maybe … or maybe not .. but you are my son and I can't see you like a looser .. got it .. " Rey said and punched him slightly on his cheek .. the confidence with which Rey looked at Ansh .. Ansh felt so overwhelmed to have a Dad like him ..

"What about your game now .. " Rey asked a bit concerned ..

To Rey's surprise .. Ansh smiled and said " I had anyway thought that I would be a coach when I retire .. just that the retirement date has been pre-poned .. " he smiled again .. it was a genuine smile .. it was not about self-pity or something .. Rey felt really proud of his son .. Ansh continued .. "Only I know how much I have got from this game .. now its my turn to return what I can to the game .. "

There was a soft knock at the door , Ansh thought it must be mom as she was gonna get him soup but the minute the door opened he froze .. He just stared without blinking with his mouth hanging..

"Hi" Kate said softly ..

Ansh couldn't believe himself so he didn't respond to her greeting.. He just kept looking at her ..

"Hello Ansh " she said again now with a smile and waved her hand …

Ansh snapped out of his spell ..

Just yesterday he told dad all about Kate and how he doesn't think he will ever see her again and here she is standing here infront of him in flesh and blood ..

He couldn't help but smile at the prominent thought that his dad had something to do with her coming over to their house ..

"Hey , how are you doing ? " he said cheerfully ..

"I am good .. How are you feeling now"

" Couldn't have felt better than this ever " his smile reaching his twinkling eyes ..

Her slight blush didn't go unnoticed by him ..

But as if she herself realized what had happened , she recovered quickly .." I had come to get some signatures of yours in these documents " she said in a formal tone .. Came forward and handed him the pen and the papers .. Indicating where he had to sign ..

Ansh looked at her for a moment and then did as he was told ..

After she had put the papers in her purse she looked around as if expecting him to say something but Ansh just kept looking at her and studying her expressions ..

" Ok then .. Take care .. Get well soon .." She spoke .. Sadness evident in her soft voice ..

"Thank you so much for everything .. I can't ..." He paused a bit then looked straight in her eyes "I am sorry for everything"

But he couldn't see any change in her expression except her face getting more pale .. She simply nodded ..

She was about to turn when Ansh asked her " Can I call you sometime later ?"

This he knew she hadn't expected at all as her eyes widened with surprise .. But she looked away as if trying to think how to say a simple "NO" to him .. she looked everywhere except him ..

He realized maybe she has moved on .. So he sighed .. Didn't want her to feel more awkward he said "Ok"

But when she looked up she stared at him a bit confused .. and then came forward to his bed side table picked up a notepad and pen and scribbled on it ..

Ansh sat looking shocked at her actions only to smile whole-heartedly when the paper thrust below his nose .."This is my new number " a slow smile creeping on her lips ..

She turned the door knob to leave when her cell rang .. she fished it out of her purse only to blink twice at the name flashing on it ..

She spun around to see a mischievous and naughty Ansh facing her .. holding his cell to his ear ..

"What the hell .. " She asked totally shocked at what he was trying to do ..

He indicated with his eyes to pick her cell ..

She picked the call ..

"Hi Beautiful .. " he said in his most velvety voice she had long back heard and fallen head over heels for him ..

She almost dropped the cell from her hand on hearing it ..

Holding the cell in her hand .. "What are you doing .. " she asked utterly muddled up .. for a moment she thought Ansh had hit his head and the consequences were being seen now ..

Again he indicated to her to put the cell to her ears ..

"I just called you to hear your voice .. " he said smoothly .. as if she was not infront of her .. and he was really talking to her on the cell .. but his eyes not moving an inch from her face ..

"But .. we just now talked .. " she said quizzically ..

"Yes .. but that was official .. " he said ..

"And this " she raised her brow .. questioning him .. looking directly in his eyes ..

"If all your official commitments are over for the day .. can I ask you to come with me for a coffee date ?" he asked .. his husky voice returning again ..

She was so shocked .. she just couldn't believe what was happening .. "But .. you are not allowed to move out of your bed .. " she said almost stammering because of the chaotic heart beat which she could feel inside her ..

He smiled .. a satisfied smile .. took his sweet time to answer back .. aware that her breathing had almost stopped .. but still he decided to tease her a bit ..

"Yes or No ?" he asked ..

Of course it was an Yes from her .. but where the hell will they go was the only question pounding in her head .. "Yes " she said a bit frustrated ..

"Well thank you so much .. the venue is my room and for the coffee .. you have to make that also yourself .. I can only .. " and he stopped mid-way purposefully .. he could also see that she waited with bated breath as each word poured out of his mouth ..

He stretched his hand .. she unconsciously walked towards him .. placed her hand over his ..

He pulled her so that she sat on the bed ..

As his right shoulder and hand was injured was not able to use it .. he just half- cupped her face using his left hand ..

"Can we start from where we left off .. please" he spoke with utmost honesty and love which was apparent in his intense eyes ..

She simply nodded and came forward and hugged him ..

"Kria .. not now .. " Rey made her halt when she was going towards Ansh's room with the soup ..

She looked at him confused "Why .. "

"This can wait .. "

"No .. he has to have his meals on time " a bit angry Kria said ..

"No .. he has to sort out something for himself ... gather the loose ends of his life .. and nothing else can matter more than that .. " Rey spoke solemnly ..

"But … Kate is with him .." she almost stopped and then realised ..

Rey nodded his head affirmatively ..

Kria kept the soup bowl aside .. she came and hugged Rey .. " I just want him to be happy .. " she said softly ..

"Yes .. now he will be .. I am sure " Rey said confidently ..

I know its been so long that I have updated my other works .. Apologies for that .. But .. I really wanted to get ahead and give a completion to this FF .. The next part would be the end .. I had always imagined this FF from Kria n Rey's perspective .. their life after marriage and some important events in their life .. and how they face it .. how they sail thru it ..

Please bear with me for sometime .. and then I would focus on all my remaining works ..
