We're Broken
Angad strolled into Kripa's clinic the next morning and walked straight to the receptionist. He looked around at her desk and spotted the stack of business cards and took one out, putting it in his pocket. "Getting it for a friend." He mumbled to the receptionist winking at her with his elbows on the desk. She laughed shyly turning red and pretended to look through some files. "Has anyone ever told you that you'd look beautiful with glasses?" Angad asked her playing around with a pen. She shook her head turning even more red. He was quite the charmer. Angad chuckled exactly when Kripa stepped out of her cabin. She caught the blushing receptionist and Angad's dazzling smile and anger rushed into her veins. She stormed over to the desk and started searching for the file she needed. Angad watched her waiting for her to acknowledge him. When she started to head back into her cabin completely ignoring him, he ran after and followed her into her cabin.
"Kripa." Angad said. She turned around and managed to throw a couple of pens and almost a stapler at him.
"Woah." He gasped shocked.
"How dare you flirt with MY receptionist in MY clinic?" Kripa snapped.
Angad laughed angering Kripa further. She growled and walked away from him towards the window.
"It was harmless flirting. I didn't mean any of it." Angad said walking up behind her trapping her between him and the window.
Kripa turned around abruptly so she was facing him. She gasped at the proximity. He wasn't even a hand away.
"Harmless flirting my foot. You were still flirting." Kripa muttered looking away so his breath was on her neck instead.
"I'm sorry. It's a bad habit." He said cheekily, tongue in his cheek. Kripa looked at him again and gave him a death glare.
"You better stop that bad habits of yours because i have one too. I really like to kill people that piss me off a lot." Kripa threatened. Angad laughed amused. Suddenly, she grinned. It was almost a mischievous smile. One that he hadn't seen at all. "Or you can always go find yourself another victim." She stated raising her eyebrows at him. He watched her for a moment.
"You're not a victim." He said amused once again. She raised an eyebrow at him.
"Yeah? What else am i?" She demanded. Angad rolled his eyes.
"I don't call my victims, victims to their face." Angad told her smirking. Her mouth dropped open and before she could tell him off, her mouth was too occupied doing something else. She pushed him away roughly.
"Don't touch me." She snapped walking past him. He sighed.
"You know, this is my clinic so i'm sure we can talk here." She said. Angad muttered under his breath angrily.
"Then maybe i should leave." He said viciously. Before she knew it, he was out the door slamming it behind him. She shook her head upset. When was he going to understand? When was he gonna listen?
She glanced at the time and decided to head out for lunch. As soon as she stepped out of her clinic, someone grabbed her arm and turned her around. She glared at Angad who stood there grinning.
"You're out of the clinic now so i'm safe." He stated blocking the door.
"I was wondering.. where do you wanna go for lunch?" Angad asked cheerily following her as she walked towards the parking lot.
"Nowhere with you." She snapped causing him to laugh. Just as she turned right to go to her car, Angad grabbed her arm again and pulled her to the other direction towards his car. She tried to pull her arm out of his grasp but all her efforts went down the drain when he pushed her into the passenger seat and shut the door.
"Khanna, you're too pushy." Kripa told him when he turned the ignition on but deep down she knew that she didn't mind it one bit.
***
A few minutes later, they stopped at KFC out of all places.
"If you wanted to come to a fastfood restuarant like this, we could have gone to Wendy's, or A&W. Ah hell! Even McDonalds would've been awesome." Kripa complained crossing her arms across her chest pouting like a 5 year old who's lollipop had been taken away.
Angad turned to her surprised.
"You don't like KFC?" Angad asked almost shocked. Kripa shook her head, still pouting.
"The burgers are too spicy. AND, too big." She mumbled glaring at the restaurant. Angad chuckled shaking his head.
"Have you tried their twister?" He asked. She shook her head again.
"I hate this place." She replied.
"Try the twister. It'll be perfect for you. If you don't like it, we'll go somewhere else. Promise." Angad said, almost begging. Kripa sighed and got out of the car shrugging. Angad just grinned.
As Angad ordered, Kripa chose a table in the corner. A few minutes later, Angad walked over with the food on a tray.
Kripa hesitantly picked up the twister, unwrapped it and took a small bite. She was quite surprised as she took a bigger bite this time. It was actually really good. She smiled and looked up at Angad to tell him what she thought but stopped when she saw his huge zinger burger and the stack of hot sauce he had beside it. He opened a packet and squeezed in into his burger and Kripa just stared horrified. Not only was that beyond unhealthy but it also seemed extremely spicy. He looked up right at her and gave her that signature dazzling smile of his.
"You're gonna eat that?" She asked nervously. He nodded and she gulped down the couple of bites of the twister she had ate that had wanted to come back up.
After eating, they left the restaurant with Kripa talking animatedly. Angad shook his head laughing. She talked a lot. Angad drove Kripa back to her clinic and went off telling her he had to go to court for some important work.
***
The next morning, Kripa went down the stairs and found the news playing on loud volume. She saw her dad sitting in front of the TV looking at it intently while her mother stood by the counter watching it as well momentarily distracted from her cleaning. Kripa turned to the TV as well to see what was so interesting. She watched shocked as they showed Dilip Kapoor signing off Angad's property to Angad and giving Kartik everything else. They were officially separated and the property and wealth had officially been divided up among Angad and Kartik. Angad only received the property his biological father had left for him before moving back to India. The property was barely worth anything. Rishi Khanna used to live in the most rowdiest and inexpensive places in the whole of London. It was rumoured that Rishi was a complete drug addict and despite being a successful engineer, he preferred to live his life as a low-income druggy.
Kripa watched horrified as the news anchor revealed that Angad Khanna had demanded for what was his personally yesterday afternoon.
"Now the question is, does Angad Khanna plan to follow his biological father's steps or his step father's? Angad decided to keep his biological father's last name, what does that say about him?" Was all Kripa heard before she turned away to get something to eat disgusted with Angad.
"Kids these days. This Angad Khanna is just beyond my understanding. He's got rich and independent so he's neglecting his parents like this. He even went and demanded for his property! Who can get more shameless than this?" Kripa's father spewed. Kripa's mother shook her head.
"Tell me about it." She muttered.
Kripa sighed as she grabbed an apple. Angad had even dropped in her parents eyes. What was left now? What did Angad want exactly? Today, she decided she was gonna get all her answers from him. Grabbing the car keys, she was out the door.
Once she arrived at Angad's apartment building, she slowly entered and stepped inside the elevator, suddenly nervous. What was she going to say to him? Was he going to listen or was he going to have an outburst like usual? When she found his room, she took two deep breaths before knocking on the door. A minute went by, then another, and then the door swung open. Angad grinned upon seeing her. He leaned over and kissed her cheek before letting her in.
"Good morning." She mumbled picking up a pair of jeans lying in front of her on the floor. She threw them into the laundry bin.
"Good morning." He replied hugging her from the back. She pushed his arms away and grabbed his hand pulling him to a couch. She forced him to sit and sat down herself.
"We need to talk." She said. Angad rose an eyebrow but kept quiet waiting for her to continue.
"Angad, what you did yesterday.." She heard him scoff and turn to look at the front instead of her.
"Angad it's everywhere! How did you expect me to not say anything to you?" She snapped grabbing his face and turning it towards her. He glared at her with so much hatred, any girl would've left right away but Kripa stay put. He was not only her boyfriend but also her patient.
"Look, you're just making the situation worse and it's not going to do anyone any good! Besides, what do you know about your biological father anyway?"
Angad's head snapped up to look at her. His jaw clenched and she knew, he was angry.
"I know he was a druggy okay? I know he also had a problem with alcohol but that false accusation of him being abusive that my mother likes to throw around? That's what angers me! If she had remained faithful to him, supported him, he would've never been abusive! He was going through a tough time and she went and had an affair with that Dilip Kapoor that everyone wants me to accept! That same guy who is the reason why my parents separated. The reason why my father became abusive and went to jail! The reason why my father left me!." Angad yelled.
"Whatever the reason, domestic violence can never be right Angad. I would never stay with a man who physically assaults me either." Kripa said bitterly thinking of her father.
"Your father could have divorced her in the first place! Or they could have sat down and talked! If your father was careless, it doesn't mean you hold your mother responsible. Whatever she went through, whatever she did Angad, she did it for you and you don't even appreciate that!"
"So having an affair was for me? That was right?" Angad asked viciously, his anger rising by the second.
"NO! I'm not saying have an affair was right but maybe that was because of her mental state at that time! She obviously wasn't the most sensible person. You can't expect that from a person who's being physically assaulted by her own husband. But then again, like i said before, the best thing to do was to sit down and talk to him. She didn't do that so yes, she was partially responsible for what she went through. BUT, you can't blame JUST your mom Angad!"
Angad shook his head.
"If it was all for me, then why did she start ignoring me after her marriage to Dilip Kapoor? It was all, Kartik likes this, Kartik wants that. Dilip likes this, Dilip wants that. Angad can just do what they want. WHY? Because i was the step son? Was Kartik not HER step son? Was it because Kartik was Dilip's son and i was Rishi Khanna's son? The man she hated? She took out the hatred for HIM on ME! However my father was Kripa, he loved me." Angad said blinking back tears. He had never cried before over this and he wasn't going to now. He had cried enough as a kid but not now.
Kripa sighed, her heart breaking for him. This situation was much more complicated than it seemed.
"Angad, you know she didn't mean it. You know she loves you. All you need to do is talk to her and all your questions will be answered." She said gently putting a hand on his shoulder. Angad shook his head.
"I dunno." He whispered dropping his head into his hands. Kripa put an arm around him and he turned around to hug her. "It'll be okay." She whispered into his neck. And that was it. That was all he needed. He gave up on holding back the tears and just let it go. Kripa sighed as she pulled him back and took his tear streaked face in her hands. He wiped the tears and took a deep breath.
"That was embarrassing." He laughed rubbing at his red nose.
"The fact that you look like Rudolph the red nose reindeer? Yeah, that's pretty embarrassing." Kripa teased him. Angad shook his head and stared at her for a moment making her uncomfortable.
"There was something wrong when you mentioned how domestic violence is never right. Like you understood. Like you knew." Angad muttered rubbing his temple. Kripa took a deep breath and just stared at the rug. For some odd reason, she felt she could tell him. He told her everything and she was sure she could do the same.
"I guess i was thinking about my father at that time. He's such an odd man. If i had to explain him to you, i wouldn't be able to do it. He has so many faces to him. So many that i can't even call him two faced. He wants everything his way. You know, no one likes him. He's never gotten along with anyone in the whole family. When my mom's parents used to live with us, they'd pay rent. They didn't live with us for free. They even paid for their grocery but if they went out and bought something for themselves to eat, he'd make a big deal out of it. What was his problem if they ate something alone bought by their own money? But no, he'd fight with my mother over it. He pointed out every mistake he could despite the fact that my grandma cleaned the entire house every day. Eventually, my mom had to find them a basement because she couldn't see them get insulted like that. And then my aunt. He doesn't get along with her either. She's his older sister yet he treats her like crap. He hates her older son. He'd keep him up all night, pointing out mistakes. Because of that, he failed grade 12. He never got any sleep or time to study because my father wouldn't let him. And my mom. I can't even tell you about her. He's hit her so many times, i've lost count. She called the police on him twice in all these years yet she's still with him. It disgusts me. The way he treats me and Armaan sickens me too. He doesn't know how to be a father. That's about it." Kripa said gulping the frog in her throat.
"How did you live with such a man?" Angad mumbled shaking his head. He turned to her and pulled her into a hug.
"Angad they don't like you." Kripa whispered into his neck.
"Why?" Angad asked confused pulling away.
"Because of what you did. It was on the news today. My parents saw it." She explained.
"Of course. All parents think alike." He laughed. Kripa laughed along rolling her eyes.
"I'll uh, talk to my mom tomorrow." Angad said looking anywhere but at Kripa. She grinned and threw her arms around him, squeezing his shoulders.
