Chapter 19: losing hope Manvi sat in the room, the tears in her eyes falling uncontrollably into her open palm, in which sat the cluster of diamonds. Her heart pained for the man who ached for something he could not have back. He had become withdrawn, unrecognisable even.
The manager had come a few hours before to convince him to go back to his singing but like every other time, they were given the same answer. No.
"It really changed my life. When she left ,something changed, permanently, in me. My heart sort of broke that day, and it will never be the same." the words echoed in manvis head as her emotions ran through her, the only thing hed said to her since she got to chandigarh before he returned to his room. He was no longer the same virat... His normally toned physique was hidden by clothes that were now too big, while his face and hair remained disheveled. What was too painful to see however, was the sadness in his eyes that was undeniable. He looked at everyone he knew with a look of such betrayal, like they had all become strangers to him. The look told manvi that wat he said was true... He probably would never be the same again.
Every man has his secret sorrows which the world knows not; and often we call a man cold when he is only sad... The minute she had laid eyes on him for the first time after Malikas death, manvi regretted ever misjudging him for now the sight in front of her deserved nothing but pity, pity for someone who was trapped by walls he put up to keep sadness out. But what he failed to see is that these same walls were the ones that were shielding him from the joy. Everytime she closed her eyes, she saw him... She saw him with tears in his eyes as he carried malikas coffin on his shoulders. She saw him dying everytime someone gave their condolences as it reminded him that malika would not be back and finally, she remembered him, eating in the dark by himself late at night, tears in his bloodshot eyes.
Manvi clutched the ring tightly in her hands, when she had arrived, she was determined to be strong, but 2 weeks had gone by and he was still the same.'i dont think i can do it malika' she sobbed into her hands. Hope had been all she had, but the man she could now see was no longer 'rockstar virat vadhera!' instead he was just a man, a man who had lost all faith in love and life.
Suddenly Manvi got up, angry at herself For being so weak. Not thinking Straight, she got up... Slamming the door open, she shouted 'you think youre the only one whose ever lost somebody?!' virat stared at her bewildered, he blinked rapidly as the lights stung his eyes. 'get out' he warned, his voice cold and distant.
'not until u listen to me' manvi blazed back
'dont you know what your doing to your family virat?!, everyone outside this room is breaking because of you... They ache for you but no matter how much we cry nothing will bring her back! I lost my parents virat, a orphan with nothing and nobody to lean on except jeevika, Yet i dug into my soul and somewhere found the spirit to move on. Outside this room, you have a whole family to support you, and here you are, wallowing in your misery...' manvis face was a picture of sympathy as she gazed at his face.
'let me ask you a question manvi?' he suddenly spoke.
Manvi was taken aback 'ok' she stammered... Confusion on her face clear.
'what does the word family mean to you?'
Manvi thought momentarily
' Family reminds us Life is full of beauty. They remind us to Notice it. Notice the bumble bee, the small child, and the smiling faces. Smell the rain, and feel the wind. Live your life to the fullest potential, and fight for your dreams...' she trailed of noticing virats blank stare.
'well then... In that caseMalika was my Only family, life is nothing but a black hole manvi, And when you find someone who says otherwise, life will probably snatch them from you'
Manvi stared at the broken rockstar in front of her. She walked slowly towards him and handed him the ring.
'if you refuse to live, you are keeping malika dead, you gave up everything that kept you alive, you think she would want you to give up on music? on life?...music was your life virat, remember your words?... Remember your song? You once sang...
Music speaks what cannot be expressed, soothes the mind and gives it rest, heals the heart and makes it whole, flows from heaven to the soul'... With that, manvi left the room, leaving virat gazing At where she stood.
Hours passed and virat made his way to the swing, he reminisced of his encounter with manvi and envied the smile that had crossed her face as she once sat on this very swing. The only difference is that, while in her eyes he saw love, joy and hope...His eyes reflected solely pain. He swayed back and forth on the swing, losing himself in a hope of what could have been.
He was unsure how long he had been there until he opened his eyes and saw manvi stood in front of him, her hands clutching a small gold envelope. 'im leaving tonight virat... This will probably be the last time you see me in chandigarh for a while, so im hoping you can make it to the show tonight at 7.00pm...it would mean a lot to me' with that she handed him the invite and left.
Virat glanced at the time, and made his way back inside, questioning why she had come back. He decided that if he would have to be without manvi, he would go to the show in an attempt to forget the sorrows he felt, it was something only she had been able to do in the past and now, he hoped it would be the same. Slowly he got dressed in his black versace shirt and suit. He ran a comb through his disheveled hair and left the house in his tinted range rover trying to hide his face from the paparazzi that had been hounding his home since he had announced his resignation as a musician after Malikas death.
Virat sat in his seat momentarily wondering why viren and jeevika were not invited... He stared at the stage, a stage that was decorated like the night sky in black silks and navy blue velvets... The fairylights reflected the stars and manvi came out in a black and silver lengha, looking even more beautiful than a thousand stars. Virat was in awe as she began her dance, as she moved across the stage, he failed to realise that the tears were pouring down his face asShe leapt across the stage telling her story of sadness... He realised that there was no music.
Suddenly, manvi heard the distant sound of guitar strings and the words to a melancholy tune.
"You want to think and say that you have everytning you need, but then you realize that something is missing, someone is missing... and once you think you've found it, it goes and disappears on you and you don't understand what to do or even where to start looking for that missing piece of the puzzle. You sit at home in lonely frustration and you just wait...wait...and wait. No where to look, no one to look for..."
