"When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves."
-Victor Frankl
Change
In any relationship, change is necessary. Now this doesn't mean to completely change the way you are, it merely means that one must accommodate to others around them and not just themselves – it's to be selfless. To take another perspective, change brings about a new thrill and a new sort of excitement, like falling in love for example – change brings new things to be learnt. And as they say… You learn something new everyday!
It is a common thought that people feel like they shouldn't have to change, or that the other person should change. But to make any relationship work, both people have to change at least a little bit. Without this change, you may not learn to love whole heartedly. Stubbornness is always a lost cause.
The story of Arnav and Khushi is therefore… a story about change.
Chapter Three – Only Tonight
Arnav sat by his computer. Eyes trained on the document in front of him. A feeling of empty happiness coursed through him as he got to the end. This was it. It was official. The first of AR company offices had just been built, and had now been set up ready for business. He had finally made it possible. His own hard work had finally paid off after years of trying to bring his dads company off the ground. After a year of Akashs' hard work in helping keep their household funds at bay by managing Malik Industries in Goa…. It could finally be shut down. Akash could finally move back to Delhi, to his home. They had their own business now. The reputed Malik Industries had now converted to AR Industries and now, he and Akash could finally call it their own.
The only problem was that he wanted to share this news with his sister. And most of all, his parents. Would they be proud of him? Would they be proud of what he had become? This is what they wanted right?
Just then NK, Akash and Aman walked through the door and slammed his laptop shut. Aman stood with his hand on the lid as he leaned towards Arnav with a menacing look in his eyes.
'You. Get ready. Now'
He looked up at the eager faces of his friends and grimaced.
'Stupid Stag!'
~
Khushi lay on her bed, engrossed in her new book. She could hear the swift breeze outside sweeping through the rustling waters. She had grown accustomed to waking up to this every morning. It made her feel at ease. If she were being honest, she really didn't want to go back home to London. She didn't even know if she could call it home. You couldn't really call a hostel your home, or the people living there your family.
She sighed and thought better of it. 'Just make the most of this time while you can'
Khushi's thoughts drifted on to a particular complex character she had just met a few days ago. Arnav Singh Raizada. 'It sounds so majestic,' she chuckled to herself. Though there really wasn't anything majestic about him. The poor guy went around like he was carrying four worlds worth of stress on his shoulders. Fair enough, she didn't know his story, but he just seemed so angry, so…. monotone
She thought some more and pictured him. She couldn't deny that he was impossibly handsome. He really did have the whole angry young man attitude going for him. And that body… those jumpers did nothing to hide his muscles; he clearly had one hell of a body underneath all that anger. She laughed to herself, slightly embarrassed as her thoughts were rapidly becoming shameless.
'Definitely a shell I'd like to crack'
~
This was starting to get ridiculous. Arnav had lost count of the amount of times his friends had left him with a bunch of girls. He scanned the club for the offending people, and spotted them scattered around the club engaging in what could only be assumed as a poorly concealed public display of sex. He noticed NK stumbling around through the crowd, drink sloshing about in his hand. 'Pathetic' he thought as he shrugged his shoulders. 'At least he's faithful!' Which was more then he could say about his other friends. 'Where the hell is Akash!?' He was about to take another quick scan when he saw her.
It was her again. Khushi.
She was stood there, a massive smile etched on her glee filled face as she literally ran to the dance floor, shouting something along the lines of, 'favourite song.' Arnav watched her dance. He couldn't help but smile lightly at her happiness. It was infectious. And he could see he wasn't the only one as he noticed her friends amusingly shake their heads at her as they joined her on the dance floor. How could one person be so lively? He literally couldn't take his eyes off her. She was the only girl in the room that wasn't eagerly anticipating the attention of another, drink in hand whilst they tried to catch eyes. She just wanted to dance.
He was brought back to reality when one of the girls currently occupying his personal space 'accidentally' spilled her drink over his new shirt. He looked at her exasperated - watching as she finally found her excuse to put her hands on him. He was too tired for this. It's not as if he wanted to be so anti-social – it's just that other people were so stupid. And he didn't have time for stupid people. He felt his anger rising as he realised that he was stuck here for another week. 'Home-time cannot come soon enough,' he thought with desperation as he felt her hand reach beneath his shirt. He wrenched his arm away, quickly putting some distance between them when he heard someone else scream at him from behind.
'You!'
Arnav did a double take as he saw a very angry looking Khushi storming towards him as fast as fast as she could in those heels of hers, looking like she was ready to murder him.
'You despicable bas***d! You didn't think to tell me even once!'
He stared at her in disbelief. If he wasn't so perplexed he would have given her points for how cute she looked when she was angry.
'What the -'
He was so confused. He was beyond confused.
'I went to the doctors today! HIV positive, you bas***d. That's what I am'
'I was a virgin, so don't you even dare say it wasn't you'
This wasn't right. His anger was reaching its limit by now and he could feel the vein on his forehead throbbing; pulsating, close to bursting. He was about to let it get the better of him when she winked at him.
'What the – '
Arnav looked at her incredulously, 'What the f**k is wrong with her!?' He made a move to explain to the girls next him that this was a mistake, when he saw that they were all avoiding eye contact with him; scratching the back of their necks as they looked away awkwardly. 'Wait a minute.' Now he understood what was going on. He laughed inwardly as he mentally applauded the museum piece that was currently seething next to him; arms flailing around her in perfect dramatic timing.
'3 months I have left! Hey Devi Maiiya… cut down in my prime'
By this point, Arnav had forgotten about his anger and had decided to play along. Anything to get away from all this attention!
'Oh please! You were begging for it! I didn't hear you complaining. You were so desperate that I felt sorry for you'
Khushi gasped. She was about to pounce on him for calling her desperate when she realised she was getting carried away. 'Time to wrap this performance up!' She snapped her head round to the group of girls who were now slowly starting to back away from them.
'Ladies, I'd stay away if I were you… This one is contaminated!'
They looked close to hysterics
'You don't need to tell us twice'
They made their move to leave, still unable to make eye contact with either of them.
'Hey girls… wait don't leave! We were having such a good time!'
Arnav held his hand up to 'stop them,' unable to stop himself from smiling. One of the girls turned around and tried to weakly explain their sudden departure in a bid to be polite.
'Errmm. Errr…. Sorry we ermm -'
She didn't even bother to finish her sentence as they one by one dashed from the spot as if on fire. He noticed that most of the other girls were looking at him with distaste now as well.
'Now that's more like it!'
Arnav turned towards Khushi slowly to find her standing there; proudly waggling her eyebrows at him with a smug smile on her lips.
'You can thank me later'
He just stared at her in shock for a good few seconds before he burst in to laughter. Khushi watched him laughing. She could tell by his discomfort and oddly contorted face that he wasn't used to laughing – like he hadn't in a while. But she thought he looked cute. She hadn't seen him smile at all in the couple of times they had met – and she was glad to have been able to see him like this.
His laughter was infectious. She couldn't help but smile lightly as she watched him struggle to regulate his breathing. It was then that she decided to make it a personal task of hers to make him laugh more often. Even if it was just a few more times before she headed back home. God knows he blatantly needed it.
~
Khushi and Arnav were stood outside the club still laughing about their 'first class' performance as they found a bench to sit down on.
'Did you see their faces?! Priceless!
Arnav glanced at Khushi sideways and smiled at her, he felt so at ease round her, just like she was Akash, or even Di. He liked her, she was different. Not to mention she had made him smile for the first time since coming to Goa.
'You know you're a pretty good actress for someone so clumsy'
Khushi gave him a mock angry look and slapped his arm jokingly.
'Although I didn't really think it through, because Sex is definitely off the menu for you now'
He laughed heartily again and shook his head
'Trust me; it wasn't on the menu in the first place. You did me a favour!'
She grinned and did a funny little fist pump as she hissed a celebratory 'Yesss!'
They spent another 15 minutes just talking; enjoying each other others company. Arnav taking great pleasure in actually being able to have a decent conversation with someone other then himself. Before long, Arnav was hailing her a cab after she insisted that she go home on her own. Taking down her number, he made her promise to text him as soon as she walked through the door.
As the taxi pulled up, Arnav remembered something.
'Hey Khushi, I wanted to ask you… The other day at the bar, you looked upset. Was everything ok?'
Arnav watched carefully as her eyes flashed with the same apprehension as they had that day, only to be replaced in a second with the same warm expression she always seemed to hold.
She smiled at him and shook her head slightly as she made a move to get in to the taxi, but not before looking back at him.
'Maybe you'll find out one day… But for now, let's leave it a mystery'.
He watched dumbfounded as she climbed in to the taxi, still staring as it drove off in to the night.
'wow,' he mouthed.
'That is some girl'
He turned back around to find NK staring at him, scrutinizing his every move. He stood very still, a confused expression adorned on his face.
'Nanav… you didn't tell me you slept with her!'
Arnav looked at him incredulously, rolling his eyes as he walked past him and back in to the club.
'Unbelievable'
