"Amma-Bauji ghar par nahin hain." (Mom and Dad are not at home.)
"I know."
"Agar aapko Radhikaji se milna hain to voh apne kamre mein so rahi hai. Keh rahi thi unki tabihat kharaab hai." (If you want to meet Radhikaji, she's in her room, sleeping. She said she was not feeling well.
She turned away quickly, making a go for the kitchen but he was quicker. His hand shot out to her waist and pulled her to him, pinning her small body to his larger one. Her right hand, still foamy with soap, slammed on his shoulder, near his neck smearing the white fluffiness on his cheek, throat and suit.
Khushi's eyes widened at the damage she had caused, scared of his temper, and she was just going to clap her other hand, as soapy as the right one, on her mouth when he stopped her by hold her wrist. Her eyes went to his hand, then to hers and she realised what she had been about to do. Her eyes widened slightly more as they settled on his again, her heart beating like mad.
Unknown to either of them, his heartbeat matched hers. Arnav watched her, not the least annoyed by the ruin she had caused to his clothing. She had already ruined him by making her fall in love with her... He observed her, taking in her image. Her large, coffee-brown eyes, flecked with gold and chocolate. Her plump, rosy cheeks. Her full raspberry lips. Her long dair hair which she had piled on her head in a wild, messy bun. The many locks of hair which had escaped and now caressed her angelic face. She was so close to him... and she was so irresistible to him...
***
Arnav sighed. Would Khushi get better soon? When he had fed her the jalebis earlier, she had regained some forces and he had told her to go home. He had wanted to drop her himself but she had persistently refused, saying she could go by herself. Maybe she was scared about what her family would think.
He chuckled, lying on his bed. All he could do was think about her. He felt a bit irritated, yet he could not stop himself from smiling. He took a pillow and hugged it, eyes closed. His mind started reeling. He could imagine her as she had been in his arms only hours ago. He jumped up in bed, realising how fast his heart was beating at the mere thought of her.
"What the... Khushi?" he whispered with a great frown.
Why the hell was he thinking so much about him? Why the hell did she have such an effect on him?
What the hell was she doing to him?
***
He tried to look as neutral as possible but the emotions rushing through him made it very difficult. But he was Arnav Singh Raizada. And he liked challenges. Having her so close to him was unbearable if he could not touch her like he wanted to. It was blatant torture, dammit! But he would not relent. He had to win her back, after all.
"Well, that's even better if your sister is sleeping. She won't disturb us."
Her eyes widened at his statement and she pushed him away from her, leaving more traces of foam on the lapels of his coat. They stared at each other.
"Aap humse door hi rahiye!" (Stay away from me!)
She turned on her heels and went into the kitchen where she continued washing the dishes.
***
Khushi tossed and turned in bed, unable to sleep. Was it the fever? Or something else? She shut her eyes.
"You're impossible, Khushi!"
"Nautanki!"
Her eyes opened again and she realised she was breathing heavily. Why would she be thinking of Arnav ' no, Laad Governor? She was up flustered, her fist on her heart, trying to control her heart. His smiled suddenly flashed in her mind. Khushi groaned.
What was happening to her?
***
He followed her in the kitchen, refusing to leave her from his sight. She appeared quite nervous by her stiff posture. Arnav watched as the breeze caused the locks of hair to tickle her face as he stood leaning against the doorframe. She was trying to push them aside but the hands were soaked so she had to use her forearms. It did no good; they kept falling on her face. His lips curved into a smile which he hid as he started to walk to her.
Arnav stood right behind her, as close as he could. He raised a hand to tuck her hair behind her ears. He felt her freeze for a second before she stiffly resumed her task. He stayed exactly where he was, waiting her to finish her task. Khushi did not take long. She turned to go dry her hands but he was blocking her.
He leaned in on her, slowly, trapping her even further by placing his hands on either side of her on the counter. Khushi moved back, her heart pounding in her chest, until she has sandwiched between him and the kitchen table. She looked away, bending back as far as the table would allow, and yet, he did not stop. She shut her eyes tight, afraid of what he would do, what he could do. Arnav smirked.
As she stopped, unable to go further, he brushed his lips across her cheeks, down her milky neck. Then, slowly, unwillingly, he stepped back, pulling her with him. When she opened her eyes, Khushi stood against him, wrapped in his embraced. At the beginning, she felt hypnotised by his dark gaze, but she recovered soon. Her eyes filled with tears and she looked away quickly, but he had seen them already. Khushi pushed him and turned to dry her hands in a nearby towel.
"Khushi..." he heard his voice strain as guilt hit him hard.
For the first time ever since he had known her, she shot him her fierce, fiery look. Something she kept for people she was really angry at. But never him...
"What do you want Mr Arnav Singh Raizada?"
Her voice was dangerously calm and he felt fear starting to pulsate in his gut. His Khushi had never been like this...
"Khushi? What's wrong with you?"
"Aap yeh humse pooch rahe hain? Yeh to humein aapse poochhna chaahiye! Aapki himmat kaise huyi? Yeh sab karte aapko sharam nahin aati? Yaad rakkhiye Mr Arnav Singh Raizada ke aap hamaari behen ke honevaale pati hain! Aayinda se aap humse door hi rahiye, varna humse boora koyi nahin hoga!" (You are asking me this? I should be asking you this! How dare you? Don't you feel ashamed doing all this? Remember Mr Arnav Singh Raizada that you are soon to be married to my sister! As from now you stay away from me, or there won't be worse than me!"
Khushi lunged forward angrily and hit him on the chest. Arnav felt his own anger rise. How dare she?
"Aap kiya samajhte hain apne aap ko?" (What do you think of yourself?)
She hit him again.
"Aapke man mein job hi aayega aap karte jaayenge aur hum chup rahenge?" (Whatever comes to your mind you can do and you think I'll remain silent?)
She raised her fists to hit him again but he grabbed her by the wrists fiercely.
"Kya kiya hai maine, huh, Khushi? Just tell me what I have done? Tumne kya kiya tha voh tum bhool gayi? Main yaad dilaaoun ke paanch saal pehle kya kiya tha tumne mere saath?" (What did I do, huh, Khushi? [...] Have you forgotten what you had done? Should I remind you what you have done to me five years ago?"
Khushi looked away but he tightened his grip around her wrists to make her look at him. He felt her bangles break under the pressure but he did not stop.
"As if you don't know the reason behind the way I'm behaving! Itni innocent bhi mat bano Khushi! You made my life hell! And I hate you for that Khushi Kumaari Gupta! Tumne mere saath job hi kiya uske liye I hate you! Nafrat karta houn main tumse!" (... Don't act so innocent Khushi! [...] For whatever you did to me, I hate you! I hate you!)

He pushed her against the wall.
Bin tere, bin tere, bin tere (lost and lonely)
Koi khalish hai hawayon mein bin tere (lost and lonely)

Tears streamed down her face and Arnav felt his heart clench. He had not come here for this. He did not hate her. Why the hell had he said that? Yes, he had thought he hated her all those years ago, when she had mercilessly broken his heart. But he could never hate her. Dammit! He lived for her. How could he hate her? Bloody hell!
Ajnabi se huye kyun pal saare

He stormed out of the house leaving her more heartbroken than ever, his own heart bleeding at the misery they were causing to each other with their decisions and unintentionally cruel words.

Khushi crumpled on the floor as sobs racked through her.
Raah mein roshni ni hai kyun haath choda
Iss taraf shaam ne kyun hai apna muh moda
Yun ke har subah ik bereham si raat ban gayi
She muffled the sounds of her cries with her bloodied hands. She did not want to wake Radhika. She did not want to answer questions for which she had no answers. She cried as silently as she could.
Hai kya yeh jo tere mere darmiyaan hai
Andekhi ansuni koi dastaan hai
Lagne lagi, ab zindagi khaali khaali
Lagne lagi har saans bhi khaali (lost and lonely)
[What is this between us
There's an emptiness in the air without you
Still sobbing, she got up and washed her hands at the sink, trying to remove the bits of her broken glass bangles from her wrists, her vision blurred by her tears. But this was written in her fate, she realised.
Khushi Kumaari Gupta was destined to hurt herself whenever Arnav Singh Raizada was around. Whether be it physically or emotionally.
Bin tere, bin tere, bin tere (lost and lonely)
Koi khalish hai hawayon mein bin tere (lost and lonely)
[Without you, without you, without you
There's an emptiness in the air without you]

Arnav stopped his car with a sigh. Things somehow managed to go out of his control around her. It had always been like that...
He was just removing the key and getting out when he noticed the redness on his hand. Her blood... And he realised he had hurt her... again...

Khushi stood with her back facing the well, holding a coin to her lips in her small clenched fist. She held on to it tightly and whispered her wishes to it, eyes shut. Then, with as much force as she could, she threw it behind her.
"Ouch!"
The loud gasp made her turn around and look for the source, frightened. Arnav was on the other side of the well, rubbing his forhead.
"Aap!" (You!)
He glared at her venomously, without a word. Khushi practically ran to him. Her hands rose to push his away. They replaced his, frantically rubbing the area where the coin had hit him. His frown deepened. What the hell? Did this silly girl even know what she was doing?
Was she even aware of the effect she was creating on him?
Probably not. Khushi stood before him on her tiptoes, as far as she could, and gently blew on his forehead.
"Zyaada dard ho raha hai kya?" (Does it hurt a lot?)
Arnav gulped and stared at her. God! She was beautiful! She certainly was a bit mad, but he could not deny that she was mesmerising. Suddenly, he remembered that she had been very sick the last time he had met her. He took a good look at her to ensure she was no longer as bad as before. He hoped she would never pass out on him again because it scared the hell out of him. No, she seemed pretty normal. How many days had it been since he had seen her? Four? Or was it five? He had lost count. He just knew that it had been too long, and he had begun to feel incomplete. Those days had been too long and hellish, boring him to death.
"Javaab dijiye, na!" (Answer me, will you!)
"What?"
Her loud squeal had suddenly brought a stop to his thoughts. She frowned and turned slightly away. Arnav watched in amusement as she pouted her lips without even knowing it. Khushi looked quite annoyed.
"Hum kabse aapse baat kiye jaa rahe hain, aur aap hain ke sunte nahin!" (I've been talking to you for so long and you're not even listening!)
Arnav smiled. She was just like a child.
"Nahin, bilkul bhi dard nahin ho raha," he replied huskily. (No, it doesn't hurt at all.)
Her eyes widened as they focussed on him. Actually, her coin had hit him pretty hard, but he could not tell her that. He knew she would feel guilty; she already was. Besides, her touch had erased all the pain he could have been feeling. Slowly, she broke into a shy smile.
"Aap yahan kaise?" (How come you're here?)
"Bas yunhi... Main walk par aaya tha. Tum kaisi ho? Tumhaara fever chala gaya?" (Just like that... I'd come for a walk. How are you? Is your fever gone?)
"Haan... Ab hum theek hai." (Yeah... I'm fine now.)
She fell silent, remembering that she had fallen unconscious on him. And how he had held her. How close she had been to him. How he had fussed over her. How he had fed her the jalebis. A blush crept over her as her gaze fell on the ground. Her hand, which had previously been on his face and had fallen to her side after that, now rose to her neck to fiddle with her dupatta. Arnav looked away too, as a gush of similar feeling poured onto him.
Gosh! What the hell was happening to him?
***
He slammed the door of his study shut and let himself fall in his armchair. Anger burned him. He closed his eyes just to see her image in his mind again. Scalding frustration formed inside him as he sat up straight, then leaned so that his elbows rested on his knees. He covered his face with his hands.
Why the hell were things going this way? Why did they both always end up hurting each other, as well as themselves, like this?
He had to put a stop to this. His goal was to win her back, not to tear her up. He had to get over what had happened five years ago, that was the past and Khushi had not known anything about him. She was not to blame. She had been right...
He loved her, dammit! How could he hurt her so much? But wasn't he suffering too?
Arnav walked to the window, jaws clenched together. He stared at his reflection.
"Khushi..." he whispered.
***
"Humne kaha tha aapse, aap andhe ho!" (I had told you, you're blind!)
"Shut up, Khushi! Aur kitni baar sorry kehna parega?" (... How many more times do I have to say sorry?)
Khushi scowled at him and lowered herself on a tree which had fallen down to rub her foot. Arnav frowned at her. She was fussing for nothing. While walking, he had accidentally stepped on her foot and had apologised profusely for it but she would not stop acting so childishly.
"Oh, c'mon, Khushi! Yeh drama band karo, nautanki kahin ki! I'm sure you haven't even gotten hurt!" (... Stop this drama, you're pretending...)
She looked at him, her eyes full of tears.
"Hum nautanki kar rahe hai?" (I'm pretending?)
A tear rolled down her cheek and she bit her lip. When her gaze fell back onto her foot, he realised he had hurt her. He crouched in front of her, taking her hand in his, and apologised again, only, this time, he was really sincere.
"Hey, Khushi, I'm sorry. Really. For walking on your foot... and... tumhein nautanki bulaane ke liye." (... and for saying you were pretending.)
"Sacchi?" (Really?)
He half-smiled at her innocent face and nodded earnestly.
"Yeah."
Immediately, she wiped her tears. A second later, she has grinning at him cheerfully.
"Theek hai!" (Okay!)
"Wait a minute! You were just crying?"
"Achha?" (Oh yeah?)
"Khushi, tum-" (Khushi, you-)
