CHAPTER 7: A Battle Begins
"Khushi," began Anjali, "I know I'm the last person you want to listen to, but please just listen. When you left, I found a letter by Shyam addressed to you about his love for you. It broke me Khushi. It broke me really bad. But I never told Arnav the truth until a few days ago. You're probably wondering why? Khushi, I was jealous. Just plain jealous. I could see the affection and love you and Arnav shared through your eyes and your actions. It was like you were both a piece of music, every step, every "note" that you guys made fit together perfectly and in sync."
Anjali paused and grabbed Khushi's hand, before continuing, "But I, I didn't have any of that at all. I knew from the start that my love with Shyam was all fake. I hated the fact that you were so beautiful, you were perfect. You didn't have to live life by limping through it. And worst, you were so kind-hearted. I bathed in your love and then I destroyed it. I was so horrible to you. But you never once said anything to me. I realized that night, that I had destroyed something so good. I had destroyed pure and eternal love between two people. I don't know what happened to you Khushi that night, but Arnav'he died that night Khushi. I had seen him die once before, when our Ma was on the floor' and when you walked out he died a second death. There wasn't a moment that he spent without thinking about you. After all, you were his breath and his jaan. How could he forget you? He started to become careless, forgetting his medicine or not eating at all. Sometimes, he would go days without food or water. He was punishing himself. He started to lose weight'and just last week he ended up in the hospital again. You were driving him crazy because you weren't there with him. It killed him. Now, it's up to you, what to do. But just know that Arnav was never at fault. Just know that he loves you with all of his heart. And just know, he never gave up looking for you."
Anjali finished talking and just sat there, staring deep into Khushi's eyes. Anjali saw so many emotions that flashed by, but it was the last one that touched her. The last emotion in which Khushi's eyes expressed the never-ending love that she always had reserved for Arnav.
Khushi knew her heart was broken. But that did not mean she couldn't love Arnav. She would love Arnav, with all those little shattered pieces and Khushi knew that it would be Arnav who would heal her heart. It was always Arnav who healed her. Oblivious to everything going around her, Khushi ran up the stairs, a bounce in each step as she laughed out loud, realizing that she was getting closer and closer to her love every time she put her foot in front of her and moved forward. The family gathered around, smiles wide on their faces as they saw Khushi, her hair swishing behind her, run towards their broken Arnav.
And for the 2nd time this week, they heard a bloodcurdling scream'but this time it was Arnav's other half, Khushi that was screaming.
~0oOO0~
"Saleh Sahib, you're finally awake!"
Arnav slowly opened his eyes, the back of his head throbbing. At first, he thought he was still home in bed, safe and sound with his Khushi and Arjun. But then, Arnav felt the burning sensation coming from his wrists and ankles, where a rope was tied to hold them still. Arnav winced as he moved his stiff neck to get a better view of everything.
Once his eyes had adjusted to the dim room, Arnav saw that he was in a building that was still undergoing construction. There was dust all over the place which was making it hard for Arnav to breathe and the chair Arnav was tied to was uncomfortable. Suddenly, Arnav felt something cold against his throat.
"You know Saleh Sahib' I could kill you in seconds." To add dramatic effects, Shyam let a little of Arnav's blood trickle down from his throat. "But there would be no fun in that. Nope, no fun at all! So we'll play a game. Who doesn't like games?"
"Shyam what the f**k do you want?"
"Saleh Sahib, have you forgotten your manners? Is that how you greet your brother-on-law?"
"You bloody b*****d! You lost that right a long time ago!"
"Saleh sahib! I'm warning you now. You are under my control now. Besides, don't you want to know what the game is? You'll be excited to hear it'it involves "your' Khushi." Shyam grinned devilishly at Arnav, watching the vein on his neck throb. Shyam had struck a nerve and both he and Arnav knew this. Khushi had always been Arnav's weakness, and would continue to remain so.
Arnav on the other hand felt like life had been sucked out of him again. How could things go wrong so fast??? Just yesterday night, he had been sleeping with his family, warm, safe, and secure. And now both his wife and his son were in danger. His eyes widened in realization. What would Shyam do to his son?
"How do I play?" asked Arnav.
Arnav grimaced at the smile of triumph shine on Shyam's face. Shyam had won this round, but the battle was not over. No, thought Arnav, the battle had just begun!
