Part 9: The Married Life
The next morning when Arnav woke up, she wasn't on the bed. He got off the bed and was stretching lazily when she stepped out of the bathroom wearing a maroon sari, drying her hair with a towel. When she was done, she tossed her hair over her shoulder and looked up into the mirror on the dressing table.
Their eyes met through the mirror and he smiled at her. She stood up and turned around, returning the smile. "Good morning."
"Morning...um...are you done?" He pointed at the washroom.
She nodded and he walked towards the washroom, slyly looking at her as he walked.
"Um...I don't know how long you'll be so I'll see you downstairs Arnavji." Khushi said as she walked towards the door.
"Whoa whoa! Okay...Whoa!" He turned around to face a wide eyed Khushi. "Lose the 'Ji'."
"Huh?" Khushi frowned in confusion.
"None of that...Arnavji business...its Arnav...or ASR if you'd like but the 'ji' needs to go out the window." Arnav spoke animatedly with perfect gestures to go with the words.
Khushi smiled. "Okay..."
"Okay...? Go on...say it..." Arnav challenged.
Khushi bit her lower lip and tucked a wet strand of hair behind her ear and looked at him but didn't say anything right away. He crossed his arms and waited for her response. When he raised her eyebrows at her, she rolled her eyes.
"Okay...the 'Ji' goes out the window..." she said as she took a couple of steps backwards towards the door. "I'll call you by name."
Arnav tilted his head to the side. "Okay then. Go ahead. Do it." He challenged her again. "What are you going to call me?"
She looked at him for a couple of seconds, blinked and then looked at her toes. He could see the scarlet tint rushing to her cheeks.
"I'm going to call you by your name..." She bit her lip again. "Arnav." She uttered his first name for the first time. She had whispered it so lightly, he wasn't even sure if he'd heard her right and he would have challenged her to repeat it if she hadn't practically run out of the room.
The next couple of weeks, Arnav and Khushi were still getting used to each other's constant presence in the same house, in the same bedroom, and on the same bed. On their wedding night, Arnav had very quickly learned that Khushi tossed and turned a lot in her sleep. He was getting used to getting a punch or a kick from her in the middle of the night.
His mood and behaviour had been improving steadily and this change didn't go unnoticed by anyone in the house. He, himself, knew that this change was happening and for once he didn't stop it because he wanted this change to take place.
The past couple of days, however, he'd found Khushi outside by the pool, staring up at the sky. He'd thought to question her about it but he hadn't. He wondered why she did that so often. Was there something he was doing wrong? He hadn't gotten angry at her or at anyone for that matter. Not since he got married. The two went to the office together and came back together. Arnav didn't stay back at the office a single minute after the office hours were done. They'd been going out for walks in the evening too where they pretty much chatted to get to know each other better. She never seemed upset at him. She hadn't seemed sad ever since the wedding. Then why was it that she randomly went out to the poolside in the middle of the night for who knows how long?
"Hello! Bhai!!" Akash said loudly.
Arnav snapped out of his thoughts. "Huh? What?"
"God Bhai...it's only been two weeks since your wedding and you're already too busy thinking about your wife to pay attention to anyone!"
"Maybe you can help me!" Arnav said slapping his hand on the desk, startling Akash.
Arnav told Akash about Khushi's escapes to poolside. Akash frowned in confusion as he thought. He was quiet for a long time and then he gasped.
"She must be missing her stars!" Akash sighed. "Her bed at her apartment had this canopy of stars hanging from it. She believes that her parents have become stars in the sky and they're always watching over her. So she likes looking at stars...she sleeps with them hanging above her head. She probably just goes out there to look at the sky..."
Arnav considered that for a few seconds. "Hmm...Thanks."
After Akash left, Arnav made a few quick calls. He looked through the mere window separating his cabin from Khushi's and watched her working away. A couple of pens holding up her hair'most of it anyway. Some strands were falling around her face. She moved about her cabin energetically as she worked. In this sense the newlywed husband-wife were very similar. When it came to work, they both put their best forward.
One day, after coming back from the office, Khushi as usual busied herself helping around the house because Payal wasn't allowed to do anything anymore. Khushi had taken charge of that. She made sure that Payal got enough rest, kept up to date with her appointments and medications. Khushi ensured that Payal had her meals on time as well. Not just Payal, Khushi had taken it upon herself to care for every member in the family. She knew about each member's tiniest habits and daily routines and she made sure that she helped in whatever way she could.
Arnav sat in his study, finishing up some work as he always did. Except these days, he made sure he had all office-related work out of the way before dinner. He spent time with the family and Khushi after dinner. But today, he was on a different mission.
That day after dinner, everyone was sitting around in the living room when Khushi walked out holding a tray. She put down Arnav's usual after-dinner coffee in front of him, handed Akash's green tea to him and then headed towards Mami and Mamaji.
"Here's your orange juice Mami, your masala tea Mamaji and here is your haldi milk Naniji."
Arnav looked at her as she took care of each family members needs. She selflessly did this every night. She had specifically instructed Hari Prakash to leave that for her and that she would personally take care of it.
Every time he thought of it he was amazed at how well she had integrated herself into the family. She had seamlessly become a part of it as if she was born into it.
She put the tray down and held a glass of water and medications. "Here you go jiji. And I'm standing right here until you take these. Yesterday you tried to sneak away."
Payal frowned and pouted like a kid but took the medications anyway. Khushi sat next to Arnav.
"Khushi bitiya...you've taken care of all our needs but what did you get for yourself?" Nani questioned.
Khushi shrugged. "I don't really want anything else Naniji. And don't worry...If I want something...I'll get it." Khushi smiled at Nani.
Arnav quietly sipped his coffee while the rest chatted. When he was sure no one else was paying attention to him, he picked up his phone and started texting.
There is a surprise for you up in the room.
He waited with a small smirk on his face until Khushi's phone vibrated. She picked it up and looked at the screen, looking confused.
He knew why. She couldn't understand why Arnav was texting her when he was sitting right next to her. He watched her hide a smile and blush after she read the text message. A few minutes later, she excused herself and started walking up the stairs.
Nani, Payal, and Mami gave Arnav thumbs up while Akash winked at him. Arnav stood up and coolly followed her. He walked up the stairs and could feel the eyes that followed him but he ignored them. He stopped at the entrance of the bedroom and found her as he had expected.
She stood in the middle of the bedroom, her head moving side to side as she took in the sight in front of her. Their bedroom walls were no longer lifeless. Various pictures of them from the pre-wedding rituals and the wedding rituals were framed beautifully onto the wall. The picture above the headrest was a family portrait from when the family members had surrounded the newly wedded couple.
He crossed his arms and observed her while she walked to a particular photo of them. He felt his heart do a weird summersault when she lifted her hand and gently traced his smile on the photograph with the tip of her fingers. She turned around to look at the rest of the walls when she found him leaning against the open door, with his arms crossed.
"I Love this!" She said nearly jumping in excitement. She completed a full 360 degree turn on the same spot as she looked around the room one more time. She pointed to the picture where she was tracing his smile earlier. "That one is my favourite!"
Arnav looked at the picture and raised an eyebrow. "Why is that?"
Khushi shrugged as if the answer was obvious. "Your smile is the biggest in that one. When did you do all this? Just this morning...none of this was here!"
Arnav shrugged. "When ASR puts his mind to something, he gets it done."
She wasn't looking at him as he talked. She was too busy admiring their pictures. Arnav realized how easy it was to keep this woman content and happy. The tiniest gestures would have her excited and cheerful for the entire day!
That night, when Khushi went into the bathroom to change into her night clothes, Arnav quickly got into bed and pretended to sleep. The pictures on the wall weren't even the real surprise.
He heard the door click close when Khushi closed the door. He felt the gentle ruffling of the blanket as she tucked herself in. Then something unexpected happened. He could feel her breaths on his face which meant she must be very close. Arnav swallowed and forced himself to keep his eyes closed. Then he felt something gentle touch his forehead in between the eyebrows. It took him a few seconds to realize that it was her finger and she was gently rubbing the space in-between his eyebrows as if trying to ease the muscles.
"Frowning while sleeping...such a Lad governor." He heard her whisper lightly. Even with his eyes closed, he didn't miss the tone of shyness in her voice and he could bet his entire business that she was blushing right now. He bit back his own smile.
He sensed the lighting dimming'she must've turned the lamp off. He opened his eyes into the darkness and the very next second. He heard her gasp loudly. Surprise successful.
She jerked straight up on the bed and turned the bedside lamp on. He watched her as she looked at ceiling with inspecting eyes. A smile formed on her lips as her head tilted and turned at all sorts of angle to look at the entire ceiling of their bedroom. After hearing Akash's story about her stars, Arnav had transformed his ceiling into a literal sky. Hundreds of glow-in-the-dark stars of all sizes covered the span of the entire ceiling.
Now every time Khushi wanted to look at stars, they'd be right above her head 24/7. He looked at the ceiling too, thoroughly satisfied with his work. When he looked back at her, she was looking at him with misty eyes.
"Thank you so much! You don't know how much this means to me!" Khushi, overwhelmed by emotions, leaned over and gave him a quick hug much to his surprise. "How did you find out about this?" She said pulling away.
Arnav took a few seconds to recover from the hug. He hadn't anticipated that reaction. "Uh...the past few night I noticed that you step out into the poolside a lot so I asked Akash for help...he told me about your stars."
Khushi smiled. "And thanks to you...I'll always have them with me now..."
As they lay in bed, ready to sleep, Arnav could see that she was still smiling looking at the glowing stars up on the ceiling. Content and happy to have made her smile, he closed his eyes to surrender to sleep. Sleep, however, didn't want to bless him tonight.
About an hour later, he lay awake with his eyes closed, focusing on his breathing to clear his mind and embrace slumber, when he felt something wrap around his waist. A few seconds later, he realized that it was Khushi. He opened his eyes and looked down to find her slender arm wrapped around his waist. Surprised, he looked at her but found her sleeping, a lot closer than she had ever been. Just like many other nights, he fell asleep studying her face.
The next morning, much to Arnav's dismay, Khushi had announced that she would be at home full time to make sure that Payal rested while she took care of the house chores. Since it was regarding Payal, Arnav agreed despite his wish to have Khushi around at the office. As Akash and Arnav walked towards the door, Payal and Khushi followed them. Arnav stopped abruptly patting his pockets.
"I'll get it." Khushi said before Arnav even had the chance to tell her that he had forgotten his phone.
From the corner of his eyes, he could see Payal and Akash having their usual cute moments before he left for work. Khushi returned with a pink hue on her cheeks, holding his phone. He took the phone from her and thanked her before turning around.
"Arnav?" Khushi called out to him.
He smiled to himself before he turned to face her. He loved the way she said his name. "Yeah?" He raised his eyebrows when he didn't say anything.
She bit her lower lip and then before he even had the time to register it, Khushi had grabbed both his shoulders, gone on her tippy toes, kissed his cheek, and ran off shyly without a backwards glance. He stood there for a few seconds, dazed with the after-effects of her kiss.
Then for the rest of the day it was nearly impossible for him to focus on anything else. He even glared at the clock as if wanting to make it move faster with the power of his heated gaze. That day, when the clock struck 5pm, Arnav was already in his car, driving home.
The routine followed the next couple of months. Except as each day passed, Arnav and Khushi were getting a little closer. They both knew it. She was better expressing her feelings through little gestures than he was but he was getting better at it. More than that, when he tried to express something and failed, she still understood what he was trying to get at.
Just like when a couple of weeks ago, Arnav had been pretending to sleep like he did every night. He would wait for her arm to go around his waist and then he would smile to himself and go to sleep. That night he decided to change the routine a little bit. He lay there on the bed, staring up at the ceiling when she got in the covers.
He took a deep breath in and lifted his arm but when he saw her turn her head towards him, he let his arm fall back on the bed. A few seconds later, he half lifted his arm and put it down again. The third attempt was more successful'he had managed to turn the arm a little in her direction before retreating it.
She shook her head at him lightly. She grabbed his hand at the wrist and pulled it over and around her head. She rested her head on his shoulder and adjusted herself to a comfortable position. There was no comment at his failure at trying to put his arm around her shoulder. There was no teasing, taunting, or chiding for not being able to do something as simple as that. She had understood what he was trying to do and she had acknowledged that he was struggling to get on with it and she had helped him out. Somewhere deep down, he knew that this would apply to any situation. She would always be there to help him out whenever he was stuck.
*
After four weeks of being married, Arnav and Khushi had gotten used to waking up either close to each other or in each other's arms or what have you. Granted that they didn't share a complete physical relationship yet but the fact didn't bother either one of them. They were moving in this relationship at their own pace and they were both happy with it. And he knew that Khushi would voice her concerns if she had any. She always did. She was assertive enough for that.
Arnav woke up to find Khushi gone. She wasn't on the bed, wasn't in the bedroom. He did find an envelope on the side table on his side. He picked it up and pulled out the card from inside. He realized that it wasn't a card; it was a picture of the two from their weekend getaway for their completion of the fourth month of their marriage.
He felt a thin piece of paper flap at the back of the photo. He flipped it over and found a post-it not stuck onto the back.
Four Months! Feels like four weeks! Thank you for making them as amazing as jalebis!"
"Paagal." Arnav shook his head. That was when he registered the pounding headache. He also realized that he felt sore and his throat felt constricted. He groaned out loud. He hated being sick.
He forced himself out of the bed and went for his shower. By the time he reached the dining table, everyone was already there.
"We'll leave today around one in the afternoon..." Nani announced.
"Anytime you want Nani ji. I've already done our packing and I also did Payal and Akash's packing...we can leave whenever you want." Khushi smiled back.
"Good Morning Everyone. Where are we going?" Arnav questioned, clearing his throat several times, as he took his normal seat next to Khushi.
Everyone looked at him in a funny way. "Hello hi bye bye Arnav bituwa, what's happens?" Mami questioned.
"Nothing...just a sore throat..." Arnav cleared his throat again.
He felt a lot worse than he did an hour ago but he didn't say anything, thinking that whatever it was would pass in time.
"My friend's son is getting married...remember Madhumati? Her son Rahul is getting married. I'm sure I mentioned this to you." Nani looked at Arnav.
"Oh...Bhai doesn't remember anything apart from Khushi these days." Akash, who was sitting across from Khushi, teased Arnav.
Arnav choked on his orange juice and Khushi kicked Akash under the table. Akash's yelp was ignored as everyone's attention was on Arnav's fit of cough which wasn't stopping. Khushi immediately jumped to her feet and rubbed his back. Arnav was starting to turn red in the face.
When his coughing finally subsided, Khushi passed him a glass of water. "Are you okay? You don't sound too great." Khushi lifted the end of her dupatta to wipe the sweat off of his forehead. Her hand froze in mid-air when she registered the temperature of his body in the process of holding his face with her free hand.
"Hey Devi Maiyya! You have a fever!" She patted various parts of his face and neck with the back of her hand. "Hari Prakash! Bring the medicine box!"
"Khushi I'm fine." Arnav croaked.
"Yeah. You sound perfectly alright and you look great too" Payal chided him sarcastically with a frown.
"No really, I am." Arnav was adamant.
"Oh shut up." Khushi barked at him. "You're going to stay at home today. I'm sure the office will survive without your presence today."
"I'm going to come home early anyway...we have to leave for Florida, remember?" Arnav jerked his chin in Nani's direction.
"No Chotte. If you're ill, there's no need for you to come to the wedding. In fact, I'd rather you stay at home and recover than to come to the wedding and make your condition worse." Nani said knowledgably. "Khushi bitiya will stay back with you. I can trust her to ensure that you rest at home."
Khushi gave Nani a small smile, looking grateful. "Thank you Nani..."
Arnav didn't have much say in the matter anymore and honestly, he didn't mind this after all. A week with Khushi wouldn't be so bad after all even though he was sick.
Khushi led him upstairs while Hari Prakash followed with Arnav's tray of breakfast and the medicine box. Khushi thanked him while taking the stuff from him. She set the tray on the bed and took a seat next to Arnav, who was propped up against a heap of pillows. Looking concerned, she opened the medicine box, pulled out the thermometer and shoved it under Arnav's tongue.
He watched her as she fussed and fretted through the medicine box, picking out what she thought might be needed. She pulled out the thermometer and took the reading'her eyes widened in response to whatever she saw.
"One-oh-three point one." She muttered and Arnav saw her eyes flicker to the phone and then to Arnav.
She gave him the medication for relief from fever from the box and picked up her cell phone, excused herself and stepped out into the poolside area, closing the door behind her. He was almost certain that she had called the doctor.
His doubts were confirmed a couple of hours later. The doctor walked in, carrying a suitcase, with the rest of the family on his tail. Khushi stood up and made room for the doctor. The doctor asked the crowd to step out of the room but Khushi was adamant on staying.
"It's okay doctor. I don't mind. She's my wife." Arnav explained.
Arnav saw Khushi grabbing handfuls of her dupatta and playing around with her fingers as the doctor examined Arnav.
"It's just a virus. Plenty of rest and he'll be fine...but I'll prescribe him pain killers for the migraines and the headaches." The doctor declared.
Arnav was observing Khushi's emotions and reactions closely. He saw her sigh in relief and close her eyes as she muttered 'Devi Maiyya'. A small smile appeared on her face when she opened her eyes again and looked at him. He gave a small smile in return'for no apparent reason.
Akash walked the doctor out and Mami led Payal out of the room as well. She didn't need to be around a sick person when she was pregnant. Mamiji volunteered to pick up the prescription before they had to leave.
Khushi walked to Nani and put a gentle hand on her shoulder. "Nani...I'm so sorry that I can't come to the wedding...I hope Madhumati ji won't mind."
Nani patted Khushi back in return. "Don't worry Khushi bitiya. She'll understand. And we understand too. I would make you stay back with Chotte even if you wanted to go to the wedding."
After another hour or so, the family walked into Arnav and Khushi's bedroom while she was trying to force him to drink herbal tea. They all bade them a goodbye with a wish of speedy recovery for Arnav. Khushi excused herself from him and went to see the family off until the main door.
When she came back, Arnav's cup of herbal tea was on the bedside table, untouched. Khushi frowned while Arnav looked at her sheepishly. After many pleadings and threats, Khushi managed to make him drink the stupid tea that made him want to hurl.
She kept him entertained with her constant talking while she continued to worriedly fuss over and about him. From medications to soups to herbal teas, Khushi took care of each detail and as the moments passed, he was started to get more and more awed by her.
His fever peaked in the evening and he dozed in and out of sleep. In the small blurbs of awareness, he registered Khushi taking his temperature, pressing cold compresses to his head and he wanted to tell her to stop worrying so much but he felt so weak from the fever that he could barely talk.
The next morning, though, Arnav was in a more irritable mood. He had had enough of the stupid room. After throwing a stubborn fit, Arnav finally convinced Khushi to take him downstairs.
"See! I'm feeling a lot better! Yesterday I could barely talk and today here I am...walking around!" Arnav boasted earning a slightly angry look from Khushi.
She sat him down on the couch and sat next to him. Seeing the anger in the thin line of her pressed lips, he sighed. He cupped his face with one hand and made her look at him.
"I'm fine Khushi...stop fretting. If you continue to be so hell bent on taking care of me, you'll make yourself sick..."
Khushi had smiled in return. Arnav randomly flipped through the channels on TV, not watching a particular channel for more than a minute. A few minutes later, he felt her head lean against his shoulder and her breathing became steady. Arnav smiled at her as she slept peacefully on his shoulder. He turned the TV off and leaned his head back on the couch, closing his eyes.
Even after four months of being married, Arnav couldn't get over how similar this woman was to his mother. He recalled that his mother would fuss and fret over Arnav whenever they got sick. Maybe that's why. Maybe that's why it was so easy for Arnav Singh Raizada to fall in love with this woman. He loved his mother more than his own life and since Khushi was so similar to her, Arnav had an unknown bond with her that had soon transformed into blooming feelings of love. He had, of course, recognized it. Now all he had to do was figure out how she felt for him.
He always felt like the feeling was mutual but he wanted to make sure of his as well as her feelings before verbalizing everything. Besides, the bigger problem was...Arnav didn't know how to verbalize it? What was he supposed to say? "Oh hello Khushi. We've been married for four months and I'm in love with you because you remind me of my mother?" That sounded ridiculous to even THINK about!
Arnav sighed out loud. Why couldn't he just say this crap like normal people? What the hell was wrong with him?
His thought process was interrupted when Khushi adjusted herself in sleep to make herself more comfortable. Arnav's body automatically adjusted to provide her that comfort as well.
After they'd woken up, Khushi had forced Arnav into the room again and had started her care taking all over again. He had fallen asleep while she was changing in the bathroom.
The next morning had been pretty much the same although Arnav felt as good as new. Khushi refused to let him go to the office. Thinking that this would be just one more day with her, he'd agreed. But when Khushi was in the shower, Arnav's phone rang. He answered the call and walked out of the room' just in case Khushi came out and he got in trouble. Aman had called and asked Arnav to come to the office for a couple of hours. An important business deal of theirs was pending on this one appointment which was pre-poned by the delegates.
Arnav quickly changed into his business attire. He had just finished tying his tie when the water in the bathroom shut off. His plan was to get out before she got out of the shower. He quickly rummaged through his dresser drawer, looking for his wallet. When he found it, he grabbed it and was about to make a run for the door when she stepped out.
"Where do you think you're going?" she said annoyed.
Arnav sighed and put his briefcase on the floor near the door and turned to face her. When he saw her, all his excuses and thoughts of going to the office flew out the window.
She stood in front of him, wearing his bathrobe, which covered her until her knees! This was the third time she had stepped out in his bathrobe and every time she did, Arnav got this warm feeling he couldn't explain.
She placed her hands on her hips and glared at him. "Ahem. I asked you a question."
He took cautious steps towards her. "Aman called. There is a very important meeting. I'll be back in a couple of hours, I promise!"
"I am going to kill Aman one day." Khushi frowned. "Can't you postpone the meeting? You just got better!" she complained.
He put his hands on her shoulder. "Khushi Khushi...stops worrying. I'm fine. And it's only a matter of a couple of hours...I'll be fine."
Then, in a movement so quick that he hadn't seen it coming, she was holding him by the shoulders and had him pinned against the wall next to the bathroom door.
"There. You're staying right here. You're not going anywhere." She said with a neutral face.
That annoyed him a little. It was only a couple of hours. He was fine. Why couldn't she just let him go!
"Enough Khushi." He said calmly. "It's only a matter of a couple of hours. You know this is important. We've waited a year for this. They pre-poned the meeting. It's either today or never. I have to go."
He pushed himself off the wall but she only pushed him back against it. He was annoyed further so he grabbed her hands at the wrist and turned her around so that she was pinned against the wall.
That move didn't have the effect he wanted. For one, he had ended up a lot closer to her than he had expected. And secondly, as he stood mere two inches away from her, the thoughts of the office, and the annoyance vanished into thin air.
The last time they were in a similar position, they had nearly kissed. With that thought, his eyes automatically travelled down to her lips. He looked back at her eyes and found that they were still closed tightly.
He let go of one of her wrists and used his recently freed hand to gently hold the side of her face, his thumb running across her cheek, as light as a feather.
Her eyes flew open at the sudden gesture and he saw the surprise in them as she registered the situation. He let go of her other wrist as well and used this hand to cup her face, just like before. He cradled her face in his hands as if it were made of glass.
"Khushi..." the words rolled off of his tongue and reached her ears as if carried by soft winds.
In response, her eyes closed and her lips parted very slightly. He felt her breathing become abnormal to match his. He moved closer, leaving only half of the earlier distance between them. He felt her arms snake around his waist and her warm breaths caressing his lips, making them tingle.
He could feel the grip of her arms getting tighter around his waist as he moved closer and closer until he very gently touched her lips with his for half a second. He only waited a second before touching his lips to hers again. This time he lingered a bit longer. He didn't miss that she had stopped breathing the second their lips had touched.
When he pulled apart, she slowly let go of the breath she'd been holding. He moved closer until the tips of their noses touched and paused, trying to control the urge to give her another kiss. He didn't know if she would be angry if he did. She wasn't protesting but it felt like she wasn't participating either.
The very next second, she proved him wrong by moving her hands from around his waist to around his neck. He felt a gentle tug at the base of his neck as she pulled him a little closer and then the softness of her lips trembling against his.
The urge in him took over then and one of his hands moved to the back of her head and he gently held her head while he pressed his lips a bit more against hers, getting a better feel and a completely new experience.
Then, just like the previous time, his phone rang. Both their eyes opened and the kiss broke but neither moved. He looked at her face as he pulled out the phone from his pocket.
"Hello?" He answered without taking his eyes off of her face, or removing his hand from her cheek. She looked back at him, her arms still around his neck. After a couple of seconds Arnav hung up saying "I'll be there in a bit."
He shoved his phone back into the pocket but this time, instead of her head, he wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her tiny frame against his in one swift motion, earning a small gasp from her.
With a smile tugging at his lips, he kissed her gently twice, making her giggle. A few seconds later, his stupid phone rang again. Khushi frowned this time. Just like before, he ended the call with, "I'll be there...I'm leaving right now."
This time, he didn't bother putting the phone back into his pocket. His arm snaked around her waist again and her eyebrows relaxed out of the frown position.
This time when he kissed her, she tightened her grip around his neck as much as she could without strangling him, to make sure that he didn't answer the phone the next time.
But the phone rang and he did answer it. He broke the kiss and answered his phone. Khushi's arms loosened around his neck and in response, his grip tightened around her waist, making sure she didn't leave.
"Just go!" Khushi said exasperated as soon as he hung up.
Arnav came a little closer but Khushi pushed him back. "No...Just go. They won't stop calling until they know you're on your way."
He was a little disappointed but he nodded anyway. He smiled at her, turned around and left, dialling a number on his phone, but not before he gave her one last kiss.
After taking a couple of steps from the door, he retraced them and he leaned past the door to look at her.
She was standing in the same spot, a hand over her heart, her cheeks a flaming red and her smile shy and ecstatic at the same time. He couldn't help but smile.
Aman's constant chanting of ASR brought Arnav back to life. "Aman, I am going to murder you when I get to the office. Must you call every other minute?" Arnav started as he walked out of Raizada mansion.
