Her lids felt heavy, as if they carried the weight of the world. Which they did. The last night came crashing back to her, jolting her awake. It was still dark outside. She tried to sit up, but found herself pinned down.

She opened her eyes, and was met by the sight of his head. It lay on the blanket above her stomach, those black curls she had never touched but always wondered about--what they'd feel like running through her fingers. She clenched her face against that thought, and made herself look at him. He was asleep, his breath soft yet audible in the silence of the room.The room was warm--he had switched on the heater some time in the night. His left arm lay along her side, and he sat on a chair beside the bed. She could not see his right arm.

On the bedside table lay a pail of water with a hand towel soaking in it. Hai Devi Maiya, had he carried her to the bed? He had dozed off sitting beside her, his head pillowed on her stomach? And what was that pail doing there? Did she have fever? She touched her forehead but it felt cool to the touch. Her hair was wet though. Her head began to swim and she felt a dizzy spell as she raised herself. She sank back into the pillow. It smelled of him. She was sure she wasn't awake. As long as she was dreaming she might as well touch him. She ran her fingers in his hair, ever so lightly, and felt each strand, strong and springy to the touch, just as she had known they would be. She smiled and closed her eyes, slipping back into slumber.

It was light outside when he opened his eyes, and felt two things at once. One was a sliver of pain in his neck, another, a warm, soft weight on his forehead. Half asleep, he knew that the warm comfort on his forehead would disappear if he moved his head to soothe his neck. Better open his eyes to check what was going on.

His yes caught on a swath of red. It was embroidered, a bit of a saree. Her saree. About to jerk upright and check on her, his eyes fell on the mirror beside the bed.He saw himself, curled up awkwardly by the side of the bed, half-huddled in his chair, his right hand almost touching the ground. On his head was a fair, petite hand. Her hand, like a pale flower, cradled his head over the blanket, looking as if it had every right to be there, perched on his skin and hair. Only his Di had ever touched him like this before, he had never allowed a woman to touch his head in all his adult years. He squeezed his eyes shut at the thought.

When he opened them, his eyes snagged on the pallu of her saree peeking from under her blanket and trailing to the floor.If her pallu had slipped off, that meant...he cringed at the path his thoughts had begun to take. He picked up the hand and began to remove it, but it clung to his hair. He raised himself and picking up her hand, laid it on the blanket.

He looked up at her face, childlike in sleep, and remembered how he had looked at her just this way, over a month ago, on New Year's night. What a night that had been-- he had seen her face at the strike of the clock into the new year which, according to NK..blast NK and his inane prattle! He sat up now, fully awake, and stretching, checked her forehead for fever. It had subsided, thank God. His neck hurt like the devil, as did his head. Shower, breakfast, painkillers, office-- he had a long day ahead.

She slept as he stepped out out of his room, briefcase in hand. He looked back once, catching her face one last time in repose. No enemy had a sweeter face. He spotted Di and her excuse of a husband at the dining table. What if Shyam met Khushi when he went out? He shook his head, checking his watch. 8.00 a.m. He needed to find Payal, get her to watch her sister, call the doctor if needed. He had to sort Di out before he left. He had to play this well in order to win. Arnav Singh Raizada had never lost a game, and did not intend to change that any time soon.
