Part 19 –

"Damn, Damn, Damn," he kept repeating to himself as he ran down the stairs and out of the Raizada Mansion to quickly get into his car and drive off at a dangerously high speed.

"Devi Maiyaan Help, Devi Mayiaan keep her safe, Devi Maiyaan forgive me," she kept repeating in her heart as she collected her stuff and ran out of the house to catch an auto.

"Why was I so blind? Why so gullible? Why was I so easily fooled? Devi Maa didn't I pray enough? Didn't I fast enough?" she kept thinking as she oscillated back and forth between consciousness and unconsciousness. With another deep and difficult breath she fell unconscious.

"Please come back, please don't leave me, I can't bear this! I am so sorry for what I did, please open your eyes," he pleaded to no one as he looked helplessly through the glass window at the doctors and nurses trying to bring her back.

Quietly she came and stood with him, he didn't have to turn around to check so he just extended his arm to hold her hand in his. She squeezed his hand lightly to comfort him, to assure him that she was there, right by him, with him.

Just then the doctor came out and said, "She is breathing regularly though she hasn't opened her eyes, we have her under observation. She must come to within an hour otherwise things will get difficult!"

Arnav just looked away and closed his eyes for a few seconds and asked, "May… may I go inside?"

The doctor nodded saying, "One person, for five minutes only!"

He went inside slowly and stood at the foot of her bed and looked at his Di lying there pale and helpless. He banged his fist at the rail as his tears rolled down, "Forgive me Di, forgive me for leaving you on your own, for not being there when you needed me the most, please open your eyes," he said in whispers.

Nothing moved, she stayed still, the slow rise and fall of her chest was the only sign of life. Walking slowly he went by her side and took hold of her cold hands to rub them slowly. Images flashed through his mind, of his childhood, of his teenage and of all the years since then, in all Anjali was present with her effervescent smile.All her life she had lived in the shadow of her disability, never letting herslf go beyond it even though he tried to help her. But of course this world never lets people forget, never lets them live freely so she had always been very aware of what she lacked and never about what she had, a loving, caring and generous personality. And now she lay there motionless, tired of the constant war against reality and he didn't want her to lose.

And what had he done? Despite knowing the truth about Shayam he had left her alone. Yes, she needed to stand up for herself but why did he give her a crash course? Why couldn't he have just watched from a distance? The control freak in him had always made sure she was okay, even if she wanted his intervention or not and now his selfishness had made him let go of everything in one go.

He remembered when he had once told her how she was his whole universe, that the rest of the world be damned but she would always be first for him.

"Toffee sai bhi meethi hai, Chooran sai khati hai

Khati meethi hai teri kahani

Anjali di hai sab sai Sayani"

He recited their childhood poem in between suppressed sobs, "Di your turn, come on, Papad ka tukra….Come on Di you promised you wouldn't leave me like mom," he said as he went down on his knees holding Anjali's lifeless hands.

Khushi gently pressed his hunched shoulders, asking him to get up and leave. The nurse on duty had requested her to do so when Arnav had shown no sign of doing so on his own. Turning his head he looked up at her, pain written all over his face, he raised himself, still on his knees to wrap his arms around her and buried his face in her torso.

He looked for comfort and Khushi wished she knew just the right thing to say but she didn't, so she just ran her fingers through his hair to calm him. Placing her hands under his arms she urged him to get up, "Lets go out, the doctor had given you 5 minutes, come on, it is an ICU….come on let's go…" she talked softly.

Outside the ICU, Khushi just let her tears fall knowing that there wasn't much she could do at that time. Khushi took his hand in hers and made him sit on a bench nearby.

"Who told you?" she asked.

"Our driver," he replied shortly.

"Have you asked him where they were and what had Anjali di done since the morning?" Khushi was trying to bring him out of his grief.

"NO! No I haven't, Khushi you stay here and keep me posted until I come back," he said as he walked away like a man possessed.

A short interview with the driver and a few phone calls at the bank gave him a clear idea of what had happened. Di had come face to face with the real face of Shayam or almost, she knew that he was a cheat.

His cell phone rang bringing him out of his thoughts, Khushi was calling.

"What happened? Is Di okay? Is she…" he would have continued had Khushi not interrupted him and said, "She is as you left her, where are you?" she had been worried, "Umm something occurred to me that what if Shayam comes her, what will we do?" she shared her fear.

"I am thinking about it also. But as things stand, all I know is that Di may have found out something regarding Shayam but we can't be sure. So if I do something to prevent him from meeting her it may end up firing back at us!" he sounded weary, "Remember how she blew up at you," he said haltingly knowing that the memory will only hurt Khushi.

"Acha don't worry, I am headed for the hospital, okay?" he added very softly.

It was past midnight. The only noise in the silent hospital corridors was that of Arnav Singh Raizada pacing in front of the ICU, Khushi had gone back to the mandir for puja. Arnav was at his wit's ends, didn't know what to do in the face of such uncertainty. This was new to Arnav who always thought he had things under control but right then the helplessness of not knowing was gnawing at him, frustrating him.

Khushi had watched his frustration grow as he went to and fro in the corridor and ran his fingers through his hair repeatedly. Not able to see him in such anymore she stood up and went to him. Quietly she took hold of his arm by the elbow and tugged at him to follow her. She then took him to the nearby window and pointing to the sky and said, "I know you don't believe but try asking, try praying to the One above!" she said softly and left him alone.

He silently watched her walk away and then looked outside at the vast expanse of the sky, it was adorned with millions of stars. Feeling the soft breeze brush his face he closed his eyes and began to pray. At first nothing came out but slowly he started to ask for his Di's health. Slowly his fingers placed lightly on the window ledge came together to intertwine as his fervor increased. He kept at it until he felt someone clutch his arm in a state of emergency and he snapped around to look at khushi's face, a mixture of concern and relief.

"She has regained consciousness!" she said shortly and ran away towards the ICU followed closely by Arnav. He stormed into the ICU and went to hold her hand and say in a voice laced with tears, "Di I am so sorry for not being there, please forgive me."

Anjali covered his hands with hers and mustered up some strength to say in whisper, "No chotte, none of this was your fault!"

A few words took a toll on her and she closed her eyes completely spent and tired to the core.

"Please, Mr Arnav Singh Raizada," Doctor Ashitoush decided it was time to intervene, "now that Mrs. Anjali Jha has regained consciousness things are under control, now you need to go and rest and let her rest also. Your breaking down like this will only increase her tension," he patted Arnav's shoulders.

"No, but, surely we can't just leave!" Arnav insisted.

"Please, Chotte listen to the doctor and do as he says," came Anjali's weak yet stern voice.

While all this was going on, Khushi couldn't help but notice how Anjali hadn't once looked in her direction. That might not have been a problem given the circumstances but Anjali had actually averted her gaze from her when it chanced to fall upon her. Trying to shake away these thoughts, she took hold of Arnav's hand and tugged at it. Though dejectedly, but he followed her, past the ICU entrance, through the corridors and out of the hospital. Khushi didn't stop until they were right next to the car where she silently stood waiting for him to unlock the door.

Arnav was too engrossed in his own thoughts to notice anything amiss with her and he too walked around and got in silently. Silence prevailed throughout the journey. Only when Arnav stooped the car in front of the Gupta residence that Khushi came out of her thoughts and turned around to face Arnav.

As Arnav looked at her, he was surprised to see the poignant look she had and something told him it wasn't just for Anjali. It spoke of some loss. Then with an unexpected swiftness she moved forward and lifting herself, she put her arms around him. It wasn't that he was surprised, that he took some time in wrapping his arms around her but the look she had on her face that he couldn't decipher that made him hesitate. With the same suddenness she extricated herself from his embrace and quickly got out with a quick bye.

Then something else happened that Arnav hadn't expected.

She went in without once looking back

poor arnav he is being torn apart loved that khushi is there for him but have a feeling she just said good bye to him loved how she told him to pray and his prayes were answered khushi is not anjali she know arnav will be devastated if something happen to anjali and anjali not even looking at her made her realize that he would have to choose so she took her self out of the equation thanks for the pm loved the update

I have a feeling just a FEELING that Khushi is going to stay away from Arnav and Anjali because of the fact Anjali never looked at her, but I might be thinking to hard!!!!!! AWESOME UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!! and THANK YOU for the PM!!!!!!!!

Oh no khushi really cant bear it from anjali sh really treated her like a sister...yes it will be difficult for anjali but poor khushi...
