"Khushi!" Payal rushed forward but Arnav stopped her in her tracks. Khushi was staring down the path and walking alongside Arnav. As they went through the Gupta house gates Arnav felt her grip tighten. He squeezed her hand back to show her he was with her and she looked up to his face.
"Payal, take Khushi inside for a few minutes. I need to talk to Di." He put Khushis hand in Payals and gave her shoulder a gentle squeeze and promised her with his eyes that he would be back soon.
"Di, Nani and Akash, mujhe aap dono se baat karna hai." [Di and Nani, I need to talk to you about something] Arnav ushered them towards the Gupta lounge room. Shyam followed despite the glare of annoyance from Arnav.
"Mujhe Khushi se shaadi karna hai."[I want to get married to Khushi] Arnav state matter-of-factly. "Chotey that is great news! I am so thrilled!" Anjali's face lit up with a smile and she moved to embrace her brother. "Aaj pehli baar lag raha hai ke humri Chotey ab bada hogaya." [for the first time it feels like our Chotey has grown up]
"NAHI. Saale Sahib aap aise kaise Khushiji se shaadi kar sakte hai?" [NO, how can you just marry Khushiji like that?] the look of complete horror on Shyaam's face perplexed all those standing in the room each giving him a questioning look. Shyam quickly corrected his outburst "Mera mutlab, Akash ke shaadi hai, aap apni shaadi ki baat karenge to theek nahi hoga na, who bhale hi kuch na kahe." [I mean its Akash's wedding and it wouldn't be right for you to steal the limelight.] Shyam knew he had to somehow stall the situation.
"Nahi, jijaji Nothing would make me happier. Bhai I think hume ekhi din shaadi kerni chaiye. And waise bhi sub kuch tayyar hai." [I think we should get married on the same day, besides everything is already prepared for the wedding] Akash walked over and pulled his brother in for a hug. "Good choice bhai. Khushiji dil ki bilkul saaf hai." [Khushi is pure from the heart]
"theek hai, ap log jaake Khushi ki family ke saath baat karlijiye, aur mein Khushi se." [OK, so you all go out and talk to Khushis family and I will talk to Khushi] Arnav insutructed and waited for everyone to clear out. Everyone walked out to share the good news. Everyone except Shyam.
"Saale Saheb, aapka Jija hone nate hume kuch kehena padega. Aur aap humse chotey hai to umeed karte hai ke aap humari baat manenge." [Since I am your Jija I need to say something and since you are younger than me I trust you will listen to me]
Arnav felt his blood begin to boil. This man, who didn't even have it in him to support his own wife was bent on giving him advice. Then he felt the anger subside, perhaps this could be funny.
"Khushiji is not like all the girls you have dated and we both know there have been quite a few" Shyam smirked and the anger came back to Arnav all to quickly. His jaws flexed.
"She needs something more. Besides she isn't rich" he gestured around the simple living room, "she will definitely not mutely listen to anything you have to say, she is well how do I put it, a pataka![firework]" Arnav watched as a dreamy haze clouded his brother-in-laws eyes. "she is delicate. And you have never treated a woman with tender care. She needs to be, how do I put, nurtured. You are best suited the hot model types."
Arnav walked closer to his brother-in-law and stopped inches away from his face. His eyes narrowed ever so slightly and his jaw tightened "Why don't you just concentrate on my sisters' needs Jijaji." He stepped back and added "And you should by now know that no one tells Arnav Singh Raizada what to do."
Shyam was getting desparate "Sale Sahib, she is a cheap sl** , how"
Arnav moved so quickly Shyam was completely taken aback. Arnav Singh Raizada had Shyam Jha by the collar, forgetting all pleasantries and decorum dictated of their supposed brotherly relationship.
"WATCH IT JIJA-JI, THAT IS MY SOON-TO-BE WIFE YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. NEVER EVER SO MUCH AS TO EVEN LOOK AT HER WITH DISRESPECT. DO I MAKE MYSELF CLEAR? OR ELSE I WILL FORGET THAT YOU ARE MARRIED TO MY SISTER QUICKER THAN YOU CAN SAY YOUR NAME."
Shyam backed out of the room leaving a seeting Arnav pacing the lounge, fists clenched. He needed to cool down before facing Khushi.

Payal and Khushi looked up as the door clicked. Arnav stood at the door "Payal I.."
Payal smiled and said "Arnavji aap Khushi ke saath thoda baithiye, hume bus bahar thoda kaam hai"[can you please sit here with Khushi, I need to go outside for a bit] she understood he wanted to speak to Khushi alone.
She stood by the bed folding the green dupatta tenderly. "Ek aur sign." [Another sign] Khushi looked up confused "ji?" she asked him and he walked closer taking the dupatta from her.
"Nani keh rahi thi, ke dulhan ki mathe per churni ladke ki maa chadhati hai. Meri to Maa hai nahi. Per Di meri Ma jaisi hai aur Di ne hi chadha diya. Ek aur sign." [Nani was saying that the veil is put on the brides head by the grooms mum. I don't have a mum, but Di is like my mother and she put it on your head. Another sign] He moved closer to her and moved a strand of her hair away from her face.
"Lekin aap to iss sub mein vishwas nahi karte hai, phir?" [but you don't believe in these things]
"hmmm, nahi karta. But I am Arnav Singh Raizada. I do what I want. And right now, I want to marry you" he took the duppatta and shook the folds out and put it over her head again admiring his own design on her.
"Khushi tumhe pata hai ke mein bohut gusse wala difficult insaan hoon? Aur mujhse shaadi karne ka matlab tumko zindagi bhar ye jhelna padega?[Khushi you realise that I am a really angry and difficult person and marrying me means you will have to live with that for life]" Don't expect me to change. And don't EVER try to change me? Don't expect flowers, gifts and sweet nothings. Samjhi tum?" He studied her face as she stood there twirling the corners of the duppatta and nervousness and nodded slightly. "Devi Maiyya raksha karna" she mumbled softly. Her mind kept saying that this was not the best decision she had ever made but her heart was determined to win this round. Her heart knew that the man standing before her was the one she was destined to be with. For eternity.
He held his hand out to her just like he had a few days ago when they had shared a passionate dance at the sangeet ceremony. The words of the song came into her head
Teri meri meri teri prem kahani hai mushquil
Do lafzon mein yeh bayan na ho paye
Yes, their love had never been easy and there was no way to describe the overwhelming belonging they felt with each other
Ek ladka aur ladki ki yeh kahani hai nayi
Do lafzon mein yeh bayan na ho paye
Theirs was story of a man and woman that was so timeless yet unique in nature. How could she possibly describe their relationship
Ik duje se hue juda, jab ik duje ke liye bane
She remembered the pain she had felt after Diwali when he had cast her aside. She had stood in this very room and cried her heart out knowing even back then that she belonged only to him. The pain again of him asking her to leave his life forever right after he announced his intent to marry Lavanya. They had fought this attraction, this belonging so many times. She was finally ready to surrender completely to her fate, to her love.
Arnav watched her face and the flicker of emotions dancing in her eyes. She looked so beautiful
Sara din beet jaye, saari raat jagaye
Bus khayal tumhara lamha lamha tadpaye
All the moments he had sat in solitude thinking about the enigma that was Khushi. Every moment had been a sweet torture in culmination to this very moment.
Yeh tadap keh rahi hai mit jayye phasle tere mere darmiyan jo hai sare
He thought back to the time she lay in hospital fighting for her life, the torture of watching her in pain. It was then he knew that there never would be life without her in it.
Har ehsaas mein tu hai, her ek yaad mein tera afsaana
Her every thought had been tied to him, like time never existed before he came into his life and he had felt her presence touch the a depth within him that he still couldn't fathom.
She closed her eyes placed her hand in his and in that instance the world ceased to exist around him.
He was because she was. It was that simple.
