Part 6
The Gupta home had been bedecked with fairy lights, the house itself looked like a bride. The courtyard had been transformed with a marquee to accommodate the guests for the churni ceremony. The grooms side was here to present the bride with her veil and give gifts to the bridal party.
Arnav's eyes roved around the marquee looking for her. She wasn't here. He caught sight of his brother-in-law also looking for someone. "Aap kisiko dhund rahe ho jija-ji? Di uss taraf hai." Arnav stated matter-of-factly.
"Arre haan, hum Rani Sahiba ko hi dhund rahe the." Arnav glared at him and Shyam walked away. There was something going on between Saale Sahib and Khushi-ji and Shyam made it his mission to find out and put an end to it.
He felt her before he saw her. A tingling sensation like a cool breeze on a warm summer afternoon the feeling overcame him and he turned to find her. She wore a blush pink kalidar salwar with sheer long sleeves. Her hair left open hung around her waist. He could almost smell the fragrant jasmine kajra. Her innocent smile straight from the heart shone through her doe-like eyes. She wasn't even aware of the attention she was getting. She wasn't even aware of her unadulterated beauty. An angel if there was such a thing.
She was serving sweets to the guests. Her signature jalebis. He could almost imagine her having whipped up a mountain of jalebis from the stress of having his name henna-ed into her palms. He chuckled to himself.
"Khushiji, aap ki haato mein mehendi to kitni gehri se rachi hai. Apki hone wale pati apse bohut pyar karte honge!" Shyam noticed the dark, almost black mehendi in her palms and smirked. He wanted her and he would do anything to show her how much he wanted her.
"Dekhiye na Raani Sahiba, aapki mehendi bhi itni rang nahi layi thi. Toh kya khushi ji ki pati unse zyada pyaar karenge?" he continued the sick joke. Arnav walked in closer thinking of a good way to distract people from her mehendi. He could tell that she was getting uncomfortable at his brother-in-laws persistence. But then again, Shyam didn't know what she was trying to hide in those mehendied hands.
"Khushiji, layiye, hume bhi dekhna hai!" Anjali grabbed the jalebi plate from her hand and set it down and made to take Khushi's hands when Arnav interrupted, "Di, Payal agayi hai. Rasme shuru kardijiye aur ghar chaliye."
"Uff, Chotey, itni bhi kya jaldi hai. Achcha chalo. Anjali picked up the shagun tray and they all walked towards Payal who was looking every bit the gushing bride to be.
"Manorama apni chand si bahu per yeh churni chadha to take kisi ki nazar na lage isse. Yeh rasm ladke ki Ma ko karna padta hai." Nani explained to Manorama who bedgrudgingly picked up the red veil and flung it over payals head.
Anjali gave out gifts to all the members of the Gupta family and finally came to Khushi. "Khushiji, aap to humari parivaar ka ekk atoot hissa hai. Yeh hum aapke liye laye hai…kholiye aur jaldi batiye apko pasand hai ki nahi."
Arnav watched intently as Khushi opned the delicate packaging. Inside was a beautiful green and blue lehenga choli embroidered with the most intricate crystal and bead work. She fingered the material and knew it must have been worth far more than she could have imagined "Anjali ji yeh hum kaise le sakte hai. Itni mehenga tohfa" she quickly pushed it back into Anjali's hands who looked at her with an expression of hurt. "Yeh kya! Aap ko pasand nahi ayi?"
"Nahi, Anjaliji, yeh to bohut sundar hai, itni sundar lehenga humne to pehle dekhi bhi nahi. Lekin itni mehengi tohfa hum aise kaise leh sakte hai?"
"Kyu nahi leh sakte hai? Anjali took the duppatta from the lehenga and flung it over Khushis head. "Kitni pyaari lagrahi hai, hai na Chotey?" Khushi looked up shocked and couldn't quite understand why Anjali would ask Arnav that question, as if he ever had anything nice to say.
Arnav was lost in her beauty. She looked stunning and he just didn't have words to describe the feeling inside.
"Woh kya hai na Khushi ji, yeh lehenga humare saale sahib ne khud design kiya!" Shyam was back with his sugar coated venom. "waise to he normally only gets young models to wear these clothes. But Rani Sahiba picked this one out for you. Kyu Saale Sahib – you usually prefer the model types right?" he didn't wait to see the anger that was rising to Arnav's eyes, "But aap chinta mat kijiye Khushi-ji, you do very good justice to this lehenga. And with the mehendi and the veil over your head, koi apko hi dulhan na samjh baithe." Everyone laughed around him, except Arnav and Khushi who were locked in each others' gazes. So much so that Khushi didn't notice when Anjali took her hand in her own and started to look at the mehendi designs.
"KHUSHIJI! Yeh kya?!" Anjali gasped as soon as Khushi realised what had happened.
"Is mein to Chotey ka naam."
"KYA?" Shyam bellowed out.
"Woh kuch nahi di, lata ne Galati se…"
"Chotey yeh shagun ki mehendi hai! Galati se?"
"Rani Sahiba aap itna serious kyu ho rahe hai. Aap to jante hai ke sale sahib in sab mein vishwas nahi karte hai." Shyam had to somehow change the course that this was taking. He was seething with anger inside. How dare Khushi, HIS Khushi sport Arnav's name on her hands.
Khushi stood there in complete shock. "Hai Re NandKishore ee ka kya matlab hai?" Buaji grabbed Kushis hands and adjusted her glasses on her nose to get a better look. She smirked to herself. She had already seen Arnav's care for her in the hospital and knew that there had to be something between these two even if they didn't know it yet.
Garima came rushing and started scolding Khushi "Humesha utpatag harkat karti rehti hai. Shaadi Payal ki hai aur mehendi rachane chali tu! Tujhko to main apne haal pe chordeti to hi achca hota. Sare musibato ki jad hai tu." Garima shook her head in frustration. Buaji held her hand up signalling for Garima to stop.
"Paraye ladki utha lao to to aisa to happenahi tha na!" Mami interjected and earned a sharp look from Nani.
Khushi couldn't bring herself to look up. Her eyes welled and tears threatened to spill over. She stood there glued to the ground twisting her hands in the duppatta that was still draped over her head. Arnav's heart clenched as he saw her. He could feel the lump that was forming in her throat. He could feel it settle as a big boulder upon his heart.
And then she bolted. She ran from there. Past the guests, past Arnav who tried to hold his hand out to stop her but couldn't. She ran past the gates and disappeared into the dark night.
Shyam started to run but was stopped by Arnav. "Koi Nahi jayega. I will go."

He caught up to her quite easily. "Kyu aye hai aap? Jaiye hume chordijiye. Please. Hum e akele rehna hai thodi der ke liye" He held on to her shoulders and turned her around. "Chup. Bilkul Chup. Kya samajhti ho tum jub jo ji mein aye karlogi?"
"Iss sub mein meri kya galti hai? Sub kyu humesha hume hi daat te rehete hai?"
"Khushi chup chaap chalo meri saat. Koi tumhe kuch nahi kahega."
"Aur kehena kuch baaki hai kya. Aur aapne shayad suna nahi Amma ne kya kaha. Ke mujhko kabhi uthati nahi to achha hota."
Arnav bit back he could have murdered the woman for saying that "I know, she was wrong. Ab tum chalogi ya main utha ke leke jau?" Her tears spilled over and his heart immediately melted.
"Khushi…" and she crashed into his chest and he wrapped his arms around her protectively while she let out her grief. She sobbed and he let her, soothing her and stroking her hair.
Finally when she had calmed down her pulled her chin up with his finger towards his face. "Ab chalen? Koi kuch nahi kahega. I promise."
They walked back slowly hand in hand to a waiting crowd.
