Chapter 1
"I'll be out late tonight! Don't wait up!" Riddhima yelled whilst scurrying down the stairs fumbling with her black bag.
"Riddhima wait I-" Slam! The front door shut in Anjali's face before she could even catch a glance at her young sister. Sigh, how she wished things would be different between them but something are just too hard to fix. Riddhima was just too hard to understand and explore, even though they were sisters and lived in the same house, they were treated as total strangers, well at least Anjali was. She blinked back the tears forming in her eyes and went back in to the kitchen preparing dinner for tonight. For one.
Riddhima slammed the door and sighed. She escaped another lecture from her sister once again, luckily. She just wished her sister was just back off and let her live her life the way she wanted, what was so wrong with that?! Isn't that what everyone wants at this age, and some lucky ones actually get it. She cursed her luck and her sister and started heading down the street.
She received many stares and dirty looks from people down the street but she chose to ignore them. She was used to this; it had been happening since the day she chose to be like this, even if it were the people she saw everyday, they still stared at her like she was some kind of prostitute. She just wanted those people to get over it and pick a new topic to discuss with themselves about. But she knew that was like asking for her parents to come back for her, impossible. She blocked out that awful memory and speeded up her walk towards the college. She was getting late, as if she cared but she wanted to clear her mind and that was by getting to college sooner and letting it distract her.
She walked in to college wishing she could walk out right then and there, it was Monday morning for Christ's sake! She didn't even know why bothered coming there, it wasn't like there was anything there for her, to help her. St Levi University. It was an ordinary university like every other one in the country, when it comes to socialising in it. No one cared about anyone but themselves, yeah sure everyone had mates but they all stuck to their own business and didn't try to mess with the wrong kind. In which Riddhima's case was her. But as always she didn't give a damn about anyone's thoughts on her. She was who she was. She walked past people but none thought twice about glancing at her, they at least, had all got used to seeing her like this, she might have got one or two glances but those were the people who nothing else to do with their lives except feel the need to judge on others with their eyes because they didn't have the guts to say it face to face with their mouth. But that's how college was. You can think whatever you want about anyone and no one will say a thing as long as you don't. This was her second year in University now and she was already three months in to the school year.
She caught sight of her gang and started walking towards them, ignoring the heat from the Sun burning past her clothes making her feel suffocated. She saw them study her attire from head to toe and then looking up at her smirking in approval. She was wearing a short black baggy top stopping a few centimetres above her belly button with a white lightning image going across it, and some long black linen pants to go with it. She let her black, silky hair out today and covered her face with white powder which would have made her look like a ghost if it weren't for the thick black eye liner adding some colour to her face ,if that's what you would call it. She had piercings on her nose, eyebrows, lip, and ears and two on her belly button. If they liked it then good, they would of course since they were wearing the same type of clothes as her. These were the only people whose thoughts mattered to her.
"Hey Ri, what's up?" Said one of the guys there called Rohan patting a sit next to him indicating her to sit there. Riddhima rolled her eyes at his desperateness, why was he always up her ass? Couldn't he get the hint, she wasn't interested?
"What's it to you?" The others sniggered at her reply.
"Hey Ri nice piercing! Another one huh? Where did you get it down from? Did you get it from that shop down Granville Street? I heard they do all sorts there." A girl called Maya said noticing the new piercing on Riddhima's lips. She had some on hers too.
"No I didn't, I got it from one of Vicky's friends shop that he told me about, right Vick?" Riddhima said turning to Vicky grinning. He turned towards her and grinned back at her.
"Yeah, I guess you took some of my advice then huh? So did it hurt?" she could sense the slight tease in his voice.
"Nah not really, I gotten used to it after doing all these piercings, sure I feel some pain but its expected and its gotten less since I did it so many times." Riddhima said shrugging her shoulders. She lied; it did hurt, A LOT. But she wasn't going to admit it in front of these people who she called her friends, or they wouldn't let her forget it. Great friends huh?
"Anyway, are you still up for tonight?" He asked nudging her shoulder with his. She noticed Rohan's face light up in excitement at the mere thought of her coming. What was he, 5?
"Yeah Ri, please come, it will be shit without you." Rohan complained trying to get her to agree to coming. Riddhima glared at him, "Did I say I wasn't? No innit? Then obviously I am if I didn't change my mind, dumbass!" Rohan's face fell at her retort; he was only asking her to come, what was so wrong in that? He always wondered what he did to make Riddhima hate him, but he never asked as he was scared of the answer he would get.
The others laughed at his expression and Riddhima's sudden outburst. It was normal for them to see this but it got more funnier for them everyday. Vicky put his hand on Riddhima's shoulder and pulled her closer, almost in to a hug.
"Chill Ri, ignore him. Let's go for cig! Do you want one?" he asked, knowing already what the answer would be. They heard the school bell ring and saw the students starting to walk to their first lesson. Riddhima sighed and got up slinging her bag on her shoulder.
"Yeah sure, why not? Its not like I got anything better to do plus I've been dying to have one all morning! Come on let's go, see you later guys!" She said grabbing Vicky's arm and practically dragging him towards the gates of the school. She looked back and saw the fury in Mayas eyes and the disappointment in Rohan's whilst they stared back at her and Vicky. She couldn't blame them for feeling this way. Maya was Vicky's current girlfriend, which she detested and the feeling was mutual on the other end. She would do anything to annoy her, including flirt openly with Vicky which worked. Of course he didn't mind, he loved it when girls fought over him. Especially those two since they were the only ones who did. No girl looked at him twice, being the way he was. He was pale, wore all black just like Riddhima and the rest of the gang. He spelt one thing for the other type of girls, danger, and that he was.
"Aah!" Riddhima hissed as Vicky pierced the injection needle through her skin. She was in a dark alleyway with Vicky and the rest, having some fun like they normally do at night. Vicky had told her that he had a gift for her, she asked him what it was and he had revealed a small see-through packet of powder. Riddhima didn't need to be genius to know what it was, heroin. She smiled and thanked him for it, she had asked him to bring it but she thought he had forgotten. She felt the drug slowly having its effect on her, slipping in to her blood. She sat down against the wall and closed her eyes, letting the pain fade away and pleasure sore in. She opened them by a fraction to see Rohan and their friend Sara in the same condition as her, Vicky and Maya making out against the wall, and some others getting drunk laughing at nothing. She smiled at her friends, they understood her, they understood her needs and gave her what she wanted. Unlike everyone else. She scoffed at the thought of anyone caring for her, she knew no one did and she didn't ask for any either.
Riddhima walked in to her home at 3am with an alcohol bottle in her hand, sipping it happily. Her hair was all over the place and her makeup was ruined and all over her face, if anyone saw her they would have screamed in fear. She saw Anjali sleeping uncomfortably on the sofa. Why does she always wait for me? Riddhima thought in anger, she slammed the door loudly waking Anjali up in fright. She glanced at Riddhima and grew grim at the sight, it hurt her deeply seeing her little sister in this state. She stood up and started walking towards Riddhima.
"Where were you?! I was waiting for you for God knows how long!" She yelled in her sister's face hoping that she would get her point across. Ridhima smiled slyly and replied,
"No one told you to. It's your own fault! Stop blaming me for your mistake!" She started walking towards the stairs unsteadily, the alcohol and drugs from that night was still having its weary effect on her.
"Riddhima please." She turned around to see her big sister Anjali with tears rolling down her face and her voice breaking whilst she begged her. Riddhima felt something stab right through to her heart seeing her like this, she knew Anjali was in pain and she knew she was the reason why, but as always she chose to look past it.
"Get some sleep. It's late." Riddhima said monotonously turning towards the stairs and running up them to her room. She heard Anjali weeping downstairs but tried to black out the sound, she dropped her alcohol bottle on the floor with the rest of her stuff and slumped on to the bed. She closed her eyes attempting to block any thoughts from coming in to her head and soon fell in to deep sleep. This was her life now, she learnt to live with it, she had no choice but to endure it because that's what she thought. Her life was going to stay the way as it were, nothing and no one would be able to change that. Little did she know that life had a lot of choices whether they were good or bad but one was entering her life and it would change it forever. For good and bad.
