Part 2
Payal entered the house to hear her father's broken sobs and a stillness in the house, like all the happiness had been sucked out of it. Khushi... Where is Khushi she thought. She rushed to her babuji, who was crying tearless sobs and trying to call her attention. He tried to point towards the bedside table and as Payal picked up the glass of water, she found two letters on it. One letter was addressed to her and the other to Arnavji in Khushi's handwriting. As she opened the letter with trembling hands, the letter seemed ominous, she saw smudges of ink on the paper, Khushi was crying. She read and reread the letter, tears streaking down her face, unaware that her amma was calling out to her - she left was the only thing that resounded in her head. The letter read,
"Jiji, i'm leaving because i cannot be the reason your marriage ends again. You love him and i know that you will not be able to bear it again. You will realize the reason i left soon enough but trust Akashji and don't say a word to anyone when you do. I will set everything right. I am sorry that i left without meeting you, but it was a necessity. Please take care of babuji, amma and buaji. Please be careful, there is more than one person that does not want you in that house. Also, give the other letter to Arnavji.
My only request, I have broken my engagement to Shyam; so please don't inform him that I have left. Please be careful. Promise to Not look for me, I will be back soon.
Khushi."
As she read the letter to amma and buaji, amma cried silently while buaji ranted about how mad that girl is and how could she break her engagement to Shyam babua and what a darling he was.
Payal called up the only name that flashed in her head, Akashji.
She called him, "Akashiji," she said a sadness in her voice, "Please come here, it is urgent and get Arnavji with you" and she said a single syllable on inquiry of her sadness, "Khushi..." and the call ended.
Akash rushed to Arnav's room, to find him at the pool side, "Bhai, Payalji had called and said we need to be there urgently. I think something is wrong with Khushiji...", his sentence was cut mid way as he said her name. Arnav was on his way in a minute, Akash at the passenger's seat of his car, and driving at the speed of light.
No, nothing could happen to her, please let her not have done something stupid. I will hunt that man down and kill him if anything happens to her. I promise. With a silent plea in his mind, he rushed to her house.
They made it to her house in 10 minutes and rushed to inside not bothering to knock to find a broken Payal on the sofa a letter clutched in her hand. Arnav rushed to her, "Khushi, where is Khushi? What is wrong with her?". Payal just extended an unopen letter to him, he somehow felt doomed. He pulled the letter out of her grip, noticing tears splashed across his name and Khushi's handwriting.
He read the letter with a heavy heart, but could never read it out loud to anyone. It was hard as it was, but saying it out loud meant accepting the fact that she was out of his life forever. He was not ready for that yet. I guess, he would never be.
They never knew what was written in the letter addressed to Arnavji.
It read,
"May be it does not mean a thing to you, but still, I' m leaving. Thank you for everything that you have done for me and my family. I will also be grateful to you for your help. Please look after Jiji when she comes to your house, she is scared and she will need the support. I know Anjaliji will be a friend to her but still she will need more support. Please if it is possible for you, try to take care of Babuji, I know i am nobody to ask you, but still I request you all the same if you have the time. Thank Anjaliji for me and say namaste to naniji. Thank you for everything.
Khushi."
He saw several dried tears on the letter, her only remembrance, the only sign that she had once belonged to my life. The only part of Khushi that he had a right to, her tears! It was her tear only that brought them together. As he ran a hand on the paper, trying to feel her essence, "Khushi..." escaped his lips before he realized.
"Payal, i'm going to look for her, Aakash stay here with them."
"arnavji, she asked is not to look for her", Payal said. "No, she asked you to not look for her, not me, I would not agree with her anyways, even if she asked me.", Arnav remarked and he left in his car, combing the streets for Khushi. "Where will she go? She does not know any one here, she doesnt have any money... What is wrong, Khushi? What did that man do? Why did you not tell me?", his brained screamed as the night continued to set and darkness started to envelope the streets.
After a futile search, he called up Akash to inform him, "Par Bhai, vo kaha ja sakti hai?", "Mujhe nahi pata akash. I am coming there, we will talk later.", he cut the call and got out of his car. He ran his fingers in his hair, dejected, i will not give up soon he thought, i will find you. I will look for you every day till i find you. You cant hide forever, not from me.
An unhappiness crept into RM at the news of Khushi's loss. Lavanya was at a loss of words, thinking hard, trying to understand what had gone wrong, but nothing came up. How will she continue with the marriage without Khushi?, she thought.
Anjali and nani were sad as they resigned to their respective works. Anjali looked into Arnav's eyes to see a sadness that she couldnot place, it felt like his world had collapsed. Why was he so sad at Khushiji leaving, it was not like he liked her, he always fought with her. Preoccupied with her thoughts, as she entered Chote's room, she found a broken Arnav with a letter clutched in his hand. He was staring at it like it held some answers for him, but as he saw Anjali, he out it away. She did not ask him what it was but she knew he would not answer anyways.
She walked to him, consoling him, telling him everything would be alright but was not even sure he was listening to her. He responded only when she said "Khushiji", his eyes shot to her face instantly and then to the door but then he was back to himself again when he saw an empty doorway.
Anjali did not understand his behaviour and now was not the time to talk, she knew that. She went to her room trying to place all the pieces together, she realized somethings and the other only time would tell.
As the morning light came in, a sweaty and tired Arnav woke up with a start with "Khushi" on his lips, the name with which he had fallen asleep in the early hours of morning. He got ready early, deciding to look for her before he left for work.
