Chapter 5
"Nupur" he whispered."Hmm,""I have always wanted to ask you if-"He stopped and wondered if he should continue."If?" she waited for him to complete what he was going to say."If we could be friend," he completed his sentence under a breath."Is this something to ask?"He looked down feeling embarrassed, while she took out her hand."Friend?" he looked at her and smiled shaking her hand. That was the starting of a beautiful friendship. Throughout the entire time they were there in Shimla, they would spend a lot of time together. And where ever they went out, he would stay behind to walk with her. Every passing day would be better than the one before. He wanted to learn so much about her; he wanted her to share every with him, and it didn't matter to him whether it was her happiness or sadness. And one day, he came to her room after dinner and smiling she let him inside. He sat on her bed across her and looked at her while she wrote something in her diary."Nupur why are you always writing in your dairy?""Sometimes it's good to share your feelings with someone. And since no one has time for me, I made my dairy become my best friend," she answered. He snatched her diary from her hand while she tried to get it back."Not fair Mayank, give it back."
"Un-uh, forget your diary because you have me to share your feelings with. Share your day with me; I have all the time in the world. You don't need a dairy to be your best friend when I am here willing to hear every word you have to say." Mayank said putting her diary away, while she was quiet."But what do I say to you?"
"I don't know; say what you usually write in your dairy."She hesitated."Come on Nupur please. Close your eyes and pretend like I am your dairy."Giving up, she closed her eyes and felt sweet air moving her hair which kept coming to her face."Dear Mayank, since you told me not to ever say thanks to you, I wouldn't. Even though I really want to say it; I guess my bad luck that there are no synonyms for it. You are such a sweet person and since the day you came to my life I' You don't know that I am aware of why I am here; it's because of you. I know you said something to Samrat so that I could be here with him for this summer. You wanted him to start liking me, but that is not possible. Your attempt means a lot to me. You are the only person I know that anyone can count on, anyone's idealistic friend. And your friendship has changed so much in my life. I never knew there was a person in this world that cared for me this much; for the first time I was wrong because there is a person like this, and that is you. Sorry I don't know what else to say but thanks." She opened her eyes for his response; he was dumbstruck."Umm'Nupur?"
"Yes" she bit her lips to refrain from blushing which didn't help."Your dairy is filled with great things about me?"She was embarrassed. "No-actually'""No? Then bad things?"He watched her blush even more while he was enjoying it in every bit."You should go to your room, it's getting late."
"No first I want an answer." He was being stubborn about it while she took him to her door."Bye Mayank."
"Bye Nupur." He gave her a peck on her right cheek and ran away. She touched it after he left and smiled to herself. She liked this new Mayank, whom she could share her feelings with; she knew she could trust him. He was the only person who cared for her and she didn't ever want to lose their friendship. As he was walking back to his and Samrat's room, he pondered on his last action. He didn't understand why he did it and was in hope for the next day Nupur wouldn't mind it and they would still be friend. "You are so stupid Mayank why did you have to peck her cheeks? What would she be thinking?" he mumbled to himself as he opened the door. Samrat was waiting for him."Samrat, you're still awake?"
"So you finally found time for me?" he said."No I was just-"
"With Nupur, I know. And in case you haven't realized, you are always with her. I thought this was supposed to be our best summer, but it's quite the opposite. Why are you always with her? Leave her alone, she doesn't need anyone interfering in her business. She has learned to live her life like that and you should not change it!"Mayank ignored everything he said and went to his bed. He wanted to say so much to him, but there was no reason to. Samrat would never understand him, he would never see the real Nupur he saw with his very own eyes. Samrat knew that Mayank was mad at him for the first time since they have been friends."Thanks Nupur'Thanks for everything; thanks for taking my father away from me, and as if that was not enough, thank a lot for taking my only best friend away from me. I will never forgive you." His mind kept repeating these words over and over again, until they came to a final haunt when he closed his eyes and doffed off to sleep. ___Samrat watched when Mayank was always with Nupur from distance. He never interrupted them, or said anything to either of them. Mayank didn't say anything to him either; what could he have possibly say to him when he was not willing to listen? Nupur was not aware of the hostility growing between their friendships; she forgot everything else when Mayank was with her. So many days pasted; each day bringing adding on to his and Nupur's friendship and subtracting from his and Samrat's. Almost two and half months had gone by, when Samrat got a call from his mother that they needed to come back to Mumbai to attend their cousins marriage. The next day they packed their stuff to go back and said their goodbyes to Samrat's aunt and uncle, who again pretended that Nupur was invisible to them.__The place was decorated beautifully, and there was noise in every corner. Nupur hated this place; all she wanted was peace. She didn't want to be in this wedding, but her stepmother left her no choice. She looked around, hoping to find Mayank whom she invited to come. She wondered if he would come there; someone would be there to make her mood happy. She searched for Mayank and spotted Samrat, who was enjoying. Was Samrat mad at Mayank? She didn't want to get between them two, but she thought she already had. Mayank was the only one who cared for her, and she really liked the feeling of that. But Samrat'she sighed, why did he have to make everything complicated? She looked herself in the mirror on the wall of the stairs; her white, green, and lime yellow sharara with rhinestones all around it and her glass earrings made her stand out of everyone. She was simple yet she looked none less than an angel. She walked downstairs gracefully watching Samrat play with his cousins. She realized for a second he had looked at her and paused, but then returned back to whatever he was doing. Their cousins went up to her and start to compliment her. She didn't care what they thought of her; her eyes were searching for someone else. And a smiled spread across her face when she saw him. She excused herself from everyone and went up to him."Hi Mayank," she said to him. He looked at her and was lost instantaneously. Forgetting that he was staring at her nonstop, he was lost in the moment. She looked so gorgeous; and that was not quite the word he was looking for. He felt intoxicated by her beauty; she looked so elegant. "Mayank?" she was confused on why he was staring at her."Um'yeah?" he said still not taking his eyes off her. "You look so'beautiful."She blushed putting some strains of hair back. "Thanks, you look great too in black. Actually Samrat was missing you and I thought that you weren't going to come. Did your family come?""No, both my parents are out of country leaving me with my sitter, which by the way I don't need. But I am here by myself." He looked at Samrat playing around. "And I could see how much he is missing me.""Mayank, if I am the reason for the fight you two-"
"No Nupur, we are not fighting, it's just we need some time separate from each other. But you are not any reason for such thing."She didn't know what else to say to him; the silent between them was getting awkward."So-"
"Mayank?" he turned around to find his friend Adhiraj call his name."Can I?"She nodded and he went to him."What happened? Why were you screaming my name?"
"Wow dude congrats, finally you told her that you love her?" Adhiraj said naughtily."What? What do you mean?"
"Don't try to hide it, I mean it's quite obvious that you love Nupur. Even a blind person can tell that. Did you tell her or not?"Mayank was getting frustrated; did the whole world know that he loved her?"So did you tell her?"
"What? No!"
"Ok then I will." Adhiraj said."No Adhi, wait."Adhiraj ran while Mayank was running behind him trying to stop him. All the people were watching them as they bumped into everyone. "Wait Adhi, stop." But he didn't stop. Nupur wondered why they were running and bunch of her cousins who were all girls were commenting on them. At last Adhiraj reached her and signed her something; he pointed at Mayank, then both hands were on his heart, and finally they were out at her direction. She didn't know what he meant at first; when she finally understood it, she looked for Mayank who was missing.
