Chapter 35: Words of Wisdom

Blood on my hands,

Blood on my eyes,

Wash them away,

What about my bloodied soul?

Guilt for living,

Guilt for hating this life,

But most importantly,

Guilt for moving on.

--------------------------------------

PRESENT:

Geet felt like she had gone back in time as she sat in Nonna's kitchen. This had been one of her favourite places while growing up. It was where she and her gang would play while eating Nonna's amazing food. Seeing Mel sit here, made her even more nostalgic.

"Have you met your parents Cara?" Nonna asked slyly, while she continued to feed Meliara her special pumpkin gnocchi."They are next door."

"No but I will." Geet tried to keep a neutral tone. "But I am planning to as I need to talk to them about Meliara."

"Your Grandfather still asks me about you." Nonna said gently. Darji had made a pact with Nonna that she would keep him up to date with Geet's life and Meliara.

"How is he?" Geet's heart clenched as she thought about her grandfather. "Is he okay?"

"He is fine." Nonna reproached her. "He misses his granddaughter."

Geet's mind was filled with regrets as she thought of her loving grandfather. In her attempt to emancipate herself from her parents she had unwittingly taken herself away from him. He, who should have reproached her more than anyone else had never made the decision to stay away from her.

"His granddaughter misses him as well." Geet sighed. "Did you give him the letters I wrote for him?"

"All of them." Nonna said cheerfully. "The old man would be so smug after everyone of them, boosting to me how he already had a great grandchild while I didn't"

Geet shook her head while smiling. "Nonna, people will think you two are in kinder garden instead of grandparents. It's almost the way like Seb and I are."

"Speaking of my nipote birichino (mischievous grandson), I've heard many things from him." Nonna said with a significant look at Geet.

"You mean about him and Naina?" Geet knew that wasn't what Nonna wanted to talk about but she tried in vain to diver the topic.

"Cara cerchiamo di non evitare l'argomento" Nonna reprimanded but then relented. "Tesaro, remember that life without love is no life at all. It is only a blank canvass, that wishes for color."

"Nonna I don't want to talk about this." Geet was adamant, as she understood what topic Nonna wanted to discuss. Seb the big mouth!

"Go and rest, we can talk later." Nonna ordered.

As alway Geet defered to Nonna's wishes and took Mel with her to Seb's bedroom to take a nap. As she patted Mel to sleep she couldn't help but reminise about the past. Memories of Lily and Rahul intruded into her thoughts. She could almost feel them with her as she sat here amongst the vestiges of a life she had left behind.

---------------

PAST:

Geet was covered in a cloud of darkness, in a world of her own. As if from a distance she could hear sounds of people yelling, a siren and beeping. But her mind was incapable of analysing what was happening.

Almost like a spectator she could feel pain all over her body but most prominent over her stomach. Her whole body felt like lead, unable to move even a finger.

She tried to claw her way back to reality but it seemed impossible; the more she tried the harder it was. Her mind was to clouded to even remember where she was or what had happened,

The last words she heard before she let go of the last piece of her conscious state was the word "Baby."

And then she fell asleep.

--------------------------------

Four of them stood like statues, unable to face the truth. The overwhelming sense of devastation and grief pervaded through the air.

None knew how to break the oppressive silence, scared that one word will make the truth a reality.

One of the doctors sat next to Seb, explaining everything. "We have taken both Lily and Geet into the theatre for emergency caesarean section. Lily has sustained severe internal trauma but we are trying our best to ensure her and the baby's safety."

She let Seb take a minute to soak in the news before he continued on. "Geet on the other hand has had placental abruption. It means that the placenta has detached from her uterus lining and subsequently causes major bleeding. The chances of saving the baby are very low because it is only at 28 weeks."

Seb could only stare at the wall as he listened to the words they ceased to mean anything. The only thing he knew was that both his friends were in danger and one……..one had already left them.

Rahul was gone……Geet was as close to death as possible……and Lily was dying.

He bent his head and started to let the tears fall. It was too hard to be strong when everything was falling apart, his whole world was being torn into pieces.

In the midst of his grief he felt a hand press on his shoulder and lifting his head up, he was surprised to meet the sympathetic glance of Naina.

"We have to be strong and not lose hope." She said in a trembling voice. But Seb couldn't find the words to respond. Seeing his immobile state, Naina gently picked up his hand and in the softest voice she could manage, she entreated him. "Let's go for a walk."

She guided him out of the hospital, into the hospital lawn. It was pitch dark but somehow the darkness helped Seb. It gave a sense of isolation from the pain and loss.

"Geet and Lily are some of the strongest women I know." Naina whispered to him as they sat on the grass. "We must not lose hope for them."

Seb turned to the woman he had once labelled as ice queen, saw that there was only warmth and kindness in her eyes. There was no haughtiness neither was there any pity, instead she showered on him tender sympathy.

And that moment Seb just pulled her into his arms, letting himself feel another person to anchor himself to the world.

It was at that moment, amidst the grief and pain, that Sebastian really understood Naina and the way he felt for her.

-------------------------------------------

The hospital was a familiar place to Meera; the people, the smells and the environment was part of her daily life. But today it was an unknown place.

She thought of Rahul, a man so upright and loving. She remembered the way Rahul and Lily looked at each other, such tenderness and care. All gone.

She thought of beautiful and brave Lily. She had been one of the most caring people Meera had ever known. Meera had never known Lily to ever refuse helping someone. And here she is dying.

And then there was Geet. Geet was the sister she had never thought to have. She never held back on her opinions and was one of the bravest people Meer had known. It was Geet who had first befriended a shy Meera, bringing her into this group.

And this brave person will face another loss today unless she dies herself, Meera despaired at the thought.

Dev sat next to her on the chair, in the waiting room in a similar trance.

"How are we going to recover from this?" Meera whispered. "Is it possible?"

"I don't know." Dev stared at her, his eyes showing a depth of pain.

It was impossible to say who reached for whom but somehow they were in each other's arms and Dev pressed his lips against her forehead.

And they sat there, trying to get some peace out of the chaos.

-----------------------------------------------

Present:

Maan felt inexplicably nervous as he stood in front of the house. Being back here brought back the memories of Belle and Iman. Bittersweet memories that gave him confidence that they were meant to be together but also brought doubts about the fluctuating tides of fate.

Yet he would fight for her and them till the end. He didn't even consider losing her as a possibility because it was unacceptable. Maan Singh Khurana will break if there isn't a piece of Iman left inside of him and she is the only one who can bring that side out.

So here he was ready to take another step in understanding her and making her understand the futility in running away from a love that defied all odds and reasoning. He had known all along where Geet would go because he knew Geet. He had followed her from a distance and had waited for a while before entering the house.

In response to his knock the door opened, revealing an elderly lady who looked at him with beady eyes.

"Hello Mrs Petrelli, I am Maan." He introduced himself to the lady who continued to scrutinise him.

Instead of asking who he was or what he had come here for the lady just said, "Come in."

She led him inside, into a dining room. Gesturing for him to sit down she took a sit opposite to him.

"You may not know me but I am Geet's-" Maan began to explain himself but he didn't get far as he was interrupted.

"I know who you are." She cut in. "No need to explain." Maan just raised an eyebrow at the lady's comment, unsure of what to say. Taking the cue to allayed his curiosity. "My grandson Seb told me everything. You are the young man who got Geet pregnant."

Maan immediately bristled at the comment, knowing that she was judging him. A part of him knew that she had every right to question his and Geet's past but still it rankled. "I don't know what your grandson may have told you but the truth is that I didn't leave her behind. Circumstances made it impossible for me to come back here. I would never willingly part from her."

"Calm down." She said in an amused voice. "I am not blaming you, though I do want to know why you haven't married her yet. A real man doesn't wait to make the woman he loves know his feelings."

Maan was uncomfortably reminded of his grandmother as he watched the old lady. "She is not willing to let our relationship move forward. She absurdly seems to blame herself for our separation. But I am not going to let her go." There was steel in her voice.

Nonna gave a deep sigh at his comment. "I should have known this."

"What do you mean?"

"Geet has a lot of guilt within herself." Nonna said sadly. "The poor child has faced too much throughout her life. She doesn't say much but there are many things she blames herself for. Outwardly she stopped caring about her parents, saying that they are to blame for the deaths of her cousin and his wife. But inside she blames herself."

----------------------------------------

PAST:

She was sitting on a bench basking in the sunlight. A warm breeze blew over her face, bringing a smile to her face. She gently patted her stomach but her eyes flew open as her hands met a flat stomach instead of her pregnancy bump

"Don't worry." Lily said, sitting next to her on the bench. She was holding little baby in her arms, while another baby was in a carrier between them. "The babies are alright."

Geet's heart was singing as she picked up the baby in the carrier. "We are so blessed Lily. They are gorgeous."

Lily reached across to touch Geet's hand, "Yes darling your daughter is beautiful."

"Daughter?" Geet asked in confusion as she looked at the baby in her arms. "But I am having……I mean I have a son."

Lily smiled at her sadly. "Your son is mine and my daughter is yours. We are going to look after the other's child"

"Of course." Geet agreed. "Your daughter will be mine as well but it doesn't mean we have to swap."

Lily ignored her comment, instead started to entreat Geet. "I know you will look after Meliara."

"Meliara?" Geet asked in confusion.

"Yes Meliara, my daughter." Lily smiled at Geet through tears. "I won't make you promise because I know you will love her more than should be possible and I will love Iman, your baby boy just as much."

"But why are you saying this Lily?" Geet begged. She couldn't stand the sad look on Lily's face, it broke her heart. Suddenly she could hear a beeping sound in the background. She was distracted by it but Lily made her focus again.

BEEP!

"I have to go now Geet but don't worry, your boy will be safe with me." Lily reached forward to hug Geet, with the two babies between them. "Nothing can touch him now. Rahul and I will love him for eternity."

BEEP!

Geet started to sob though she didn't know why. "Lily what is happening?"

Beep!

"It's time for you to go back." Lily said with a smile and pressed a kiss on Geet's forhead. Geet's eyes automatically closed as she heard Lily. "Love you Geet and Mel."

BEEP!

"We have sinus rhythm." Geet could hear someone scream out as she started to jerk out her darkness. "Regular rhythm and rate."

"What's happening?" Geet garbled out.

"Everything is okay." Someone patted her hand. "Relax."

Geet managed to pry her eyes open. With blurry vision she was able to make out concerned faces staring at her but as she looked down at herself she could see that she no longer had a her baby bump.

"My baby!" She tried to yell in her hoarse voice. "Where is my baby?"

"Sorry Geet, we couldn't save your baby." A sympathetic voice called out to her.

"NO!" This time her voice found its strength. "No!" But slowly her words petered off as she went back into oblivion.

------------------------------

PRESENT:

Nonna continued with her explanation. "I've never seen my cara lose hope like she did that day. Even after you left and the day she found out you were pregnant, she had hope. She might have done stupid things but the truth was that she had faith. However the day Lily and Rahul died, everything changed. She doesn't cry, she doesn't talk about her parents and she made Meliara her whole world."

Nonna looked at Maan with sympathy. "Imagine living in a world where overnight you lose your family. Imagine believing that because of you three lives were taken overnight."

"But it isn't her fault!" Maan protested. "She isn't responsible for those deaths."

"Yes it isn't her fault but even as a child Geet has always taken things to heart. When she is happy she becomes ecstatic but when she is sad she is inconsolable. She never does things by halves, instead she experiences too much emotion. Only those who fly the highest can fall that hard" Nonna smiled fondly as she thought of Geet. "Its why she wanted to be a doctor because the thought of people suffering was too painful for her."

Maan also smiled as he thought of Belle and how she had held his hand as he told her about his mother's death. "I know that she has a soft heart but that doesn't mean that she can't move on."

"You are right." Nonna acquiesced. "But before you help her, you need to know her past. What has Geet told you about her childhood?"

"She only told me that she was sick as a child and that there were many things that she didn't do as a kid." Maan was confused by Nonna's question but decided to let her direct the conversation.

"Well you should know-" Nonna began but was cut by a voice at the doorway.

"You should know only what I wish to tell you." Geet said in a tired voice.

Nonna and Maan both had guilty looks on their faces but were also not bending. Nonna retorted to Geet, "Well why don't you tell him then?"

"Fine, I'll tell him what I wish." She gritted out. "Lets go for a walk."

---------------------------

They were sitting on a bench in a children's park that was on the same block. At the moment the park was isolated, leaving the two in their private world.

"This where I spent my childhood. Rahul, Lily, Seb and I would come her everyday." Geet said with nostalgia and pain. "It is also where I came after my dad kicked me out of the house."

Maan flinched at the words. "I am sorry."

"What are you sorry for?" Geet turned to him with a bittersweet smile. "There is no need to apologise for something you aren't responsible for. I don't regret getting pregnant."

"Then what is it you regret?" Maan asked in frustration. "Seb's Grandmother wanted me to know about your childhood and other things about you. She said it was important in understanding you."

Geet sighed. "Are you ready to hear it?"

"Yes."

"I was dying."
