O... Babaji!
Geet was astounded while descending the staircase to see the decoration of the hall, her eyes wide open as she tore her gaze from the enormous chandelier that was hung with dozens of strings of crystal beads and looked around to the bright fairy lights spread all across the hall. Garlands of flowers were hung from ceiling to the floor. Beautiful floor standing candelabras would spread beautiful colored light when lit. On the Door of the Grand hall a huge rangoli was made which was visible from the place Geet was standing on the staircase which led to the upper level of the house. The staircase itself had been decorated with lots of flowers especially strings of orchids had been rolled on the bar of staircase.
It would be wrong to say that when Geet came down in the morning she had been surprised, she was just amazed at the speed at which the decorators were working to give the finishing touches for the party tonight.
The party which would change her life, as the Roka ceremony was to be held tonight. She was very near to her dream of becoming Mrs. Khurana with a partner she held in great esteem. She never knew when he had become her friend, philosopher and guide from being her boss. She remembered the trip to sites which they both had made together,broan had brought them closer.
She remembered the day, exactly six months ago, when she had come to the garden drying her hair with a towel as she had just taken a bath and the whole walkway from the house towards the garden had been filled with Red Rose petals and under the tree which was in the center of the garden a huge bouquet of wildflowers with white roses was kept. The scent emitting from the bouquet had tempted her to pickup it up and inhale the fragrance of the wild flowers and the rose. The bouquet had arosen feelings of loneliness, longing and the lack of love in her life. She had been standing under the tree deep in her thoughts, when there had been a shower of Red Rose petals on her. She had been so excited to see a bucket full of rose petals tied to the higher branches of the tree, upped on her and the petals falling like rain shower on her. She had twirled around spreading her hands wide across, smiling and feeling happy.
When she had stopped twirling she saw Dev watching her with a big simile on his face.
She had gone running and hugged him, "Dev, have you done this?"
"Yes" he had replied taking her in his arms.
At which she had asked him, "but why?"
"Because I had been observing you for some time and felt that you have been feeling sad, unhappy and emotionally drained out after the death of uncle and aunty. You have forgotten to smile and are always lost in your thoughts. I know nothing can bring back uncle, aunty and your family but I want you to try to come out of the cocoon of sadness which you have surrounded yourself in. And I know you love Roses especially the Red ones, so I thought of this idea. And I have been right, after a long time, though it feels like a decade you have smiled. I want you to be happy in this house. Your happiness means a lot to me, try to be happy, I know it will be difficult but for the sake of Dadima and me, please try."
His answer made her realize the depth of his feelings and she had been really impressed by his answer. She understood the importance of friends in one's life and had accepted that at times friendship was more valuable than love. At that moment she decided to leave behind the past and to try to move forward in life.
That day had been a turning point of sorts for her. It had taken her sometime to come out of her grief but ultimately she had done it. From then on she had poured her heart out and given her everything to the job she loved, that of being an interior decorator of Khurana Constructions.
She kept on touching and feeling things as she moved around the hall remembering the day when he had proposed to her.
It had been the day she had been promoted and had been given the project she had desperately wanted to do. It was her dream project and she had been eyeing it for sometime. They had decided to celebrate it by going out to dinner. It had become a routine for them to go out to dinner whenever they completed a project on time.
Usually they went out together so she had been a little surprised when a car had come to collect her just before sunset.
When the chauffeur had held opened the door for her to take seat she had asked him,"Where is Dev?"
"Some sudden work has come up, so sir is a little busy and will meet you directly at the place". Saying this, the chauffer had seen to her comfort and started moving.
She had been driven in the car slowly through the city, out along the river road, up into a place which felt like a garden where it drew to a halt. And a uniformed butler opened the door for her. There was a footpath leading from where the car had pulled up, winding through a narrow section of overgrown shrubs. As the butler led her silently along the path, which emerged into a clearing, leaving her to face what was before her.
And what was before her made her gasp !.
A table for two with crisp white linen. Two cushioned chairs with high backs, draped in white velvet, each leg fastened with crimson ties. Both the colour being her favorite.
Silverware, a huge bunch of flowers in a crystal vase, crystal magnificent enough to take your breath away, soft music coming from behind a small rise was enough to sway any girl's heart.
And then Dev stepped out from the shadows looking more handsome than any man she ever met. Holding her hand he made her sit on the chair.
She closed her eyes. This couldn't be happening.
This was happening.
"This should wait until after diner," he said softly, "but it's been burning a hole in my pocket for three hours now." And without more words, he lifted a crimson velvet box and held it open. A diamond ring lay in solitary splendor.
"Will you marry me Geet?"
She looked down in his eyes, paused for a moment and'.
"Yes, I believe I will" she gently replied.
