@all...here's the update...I know I took so long in writing it, apologies for that but right now all I feel is nervous about this update😆 Read😆

Part 19:

Nupur was a little furious with Mayank today. No he couldn't let Varun do just anything that he wants. He need to be disciplined and set right too. Nupur had never in her dreams imagined that a strict disciplinarian like Mayank can let Varun have his own way everytime. It was as if Mayank just didn't know how to say a 'No' to Varun at all.

It was actually surprising because she had estimated him being the strict Dad and her being a relenting Mom. But as it had come across, they had had role reversal in case of Varun. She HAD to be strict because he was not at all. Never.

It was fine with her too sometimes, but not everytime certainly, especially this once.

Varun had this blunt-speaking nature of Mayank, alright. But this time he had, alongwith his friends irritated a boy, his age, with some stupid mocking game that they had indulged him in.

It was an odd phase for Nupur. Mayank spoke the inevitable and was back with his smile everytime backing Varun in front of Nupur. But Nupur was worried. He was just 7 years old and he spoke more than his age, she was worried the sweet side of his which she knew existed in him and which showed up when he was away from his colony friends for sometime, would soon fade away.

She too wanted him to be strong but not this way, particularly, where he would blink and miss someone getting hurt by him and just relax and ease up in his own fun.

Mayank and Nupur had argued a lot over it, quite a lot many times now. Mayank often defended Varun by saying, "Nupur, its his growing phase, he would grow up to become considerate and just. Give him some time. Let him learn on his own what's supposed to be done and what not. You know he is never bad at heart right?"

Nupur retorted back, "But Mayank? He is OUR kid and we are completely responsible to that growing phase of his. Yes he is good at heart and I understand that he speaks straight in face sometimes, like you. BUT…..we need to draw a line for him, don't you think? And then only he'll be able to distinguish our expectations and regognise his own rights and wrongs?"

Mayank replied back, "Okay, but this time I'll talk to him. You shout and he gets upset!"

Nupur looked at him astonished, "You speak as if I am lesser attached to him and get some kind of pleasure in making him upset?" while tear spaced itself in her unblinking eyes.

Mayank hugged her and said, "Come on, Nupur. You know I never meant that. But, please let me handle it this time. If you keep scolding him then he'll probably grow rebellious. You can trust me with teaching him right, right?"

Nupur nodded her head over his shoulders and said, "Okay, but if he again ever tries to be like these new set of frinds of his then I won't listen to you and will end up with something drastic. And this is not just a statement Mayank!"

Mayank nodded and went ahead with his talk with Varun.

Varun was sitting in his room, at his study table, looking at his book dejectedly. Angry.

Why doesn't his Mom scold him so much everytime? His friends are not bad actually. They were just joking and the boy in question, who had ended up crying and his mother had complained to Nupur, was such a weak-hearted low self-confidence guy that he cried mostly for no particular reason. He had expected he'll someday become their friend but he never got over complaining about them!!!

He wondered if his friends were actually as his Mom said, spoiling him?

Mayank walked slowly inside the door of Varun's room and as Varun looked at Mayank, Mayank picked up Varun in his arms and sat on the bed with him on his lap.

Mayank simply asked, "Tell me your version of the story Varun"

Varun explained what had happened and Mayank simply asked, "And you are angry at your Mom for scolding you for THAT? Such a small thing?"

Varun looked down and approved his question.

Mayank pressed his lips and asked, "Okay, so if you make any mistake or do anything wrong, she shouldn't say a word. She should just be all praises, right? Okay, I'll go and tell her that, that Varun is being exactly what she is fearing you might be"

He started to get up when Varun tugged Mayank's hand and he stayed put when he said, "Dad? Am I a being a bad boy. Mom thinks that now?"

Mayank smiled and replied assuringly, "She can never think that Varun. She loves you more that you love yourself"

Varun looked at Mayank trying to understand but his age and depth of thoughts didn't quite allow him a chance at understanding exactly what Mayank said and how it must be true.

Mayank got it right away and said,"She just wants you to be a good boy Varun. Teasing and joking is alright in a limit but you made that boy cry. May I ask why is everything so funny about him?"

Varun tried to explain genially, "He is very weird Dad. I don't know! And he cries so often that it is like.."

Mayank stopped him mid-sentence, "And did you realize that when he ends up crying, it must hurt him everytime?"

Varun looked at him surprised, shocked a little. He never thought that way.

Mayank simply said, "Varun, you are a strong boy and smart too" at which, in between Varun beamed before catching his further words, "But, some are weak, not-so-smart and they may find it difficult to adjust when people make fun of them."

It seemed Varun was considering his words now, looking deep in his eyes to get the depth of his father's words.

Mayank knew he had hit it. He concluded plainly, "Will you try to befriend him? I promise your Mom will not scold you and rather be proud. Will you?"

Varun nodded reluctantly and Mayank smiled and said, "Now that's like My Boy!" and Hi-fived with him and pulled him along to say a little sorry to his Mom.

Nupur was glad Varun listened to Mayank as much as Mayank listened to Varun. Their bond was somehow extra special, but hey, who was complaining, Mayank sometimes walked that extra mile for her and paid up in time for his lineancy to Varun.

Mayank was out of station for some of his work commitment. Nupur was having tough time dealing with shuffling between Varun and her work. Not to mention how much she missed Mayank's presence around. It was like she just can't handle all on her own without him, not that she didn't try or actually she couldn't, but it was more or unsettling for her when he wasn't around for long. This time it was almost 2-3 month's time. She wondered how Mayank had become her second nature. The one she needed to respond to and let out so thatshe could relax and have a breath of relief.

Nupur handled Varun very well, tried hardest to be his friend and he was easy going too like her, she was glad. But she couldn't handle him when angry, it was very hard without Mayank. It may be due to the simple fact that Nupur and Varun's tempers were both at same levels and although Mayank's was still higher but that hardly showed up to them. He always managed to bridge the distance between Nupur and Varun with his few words, which Nupur wasn't even aware of had been created until recently.

Nupur and Varun shared a beautiful relation though but the qualities that they both matched in, were not the best ones at all - Like temper, not wanting to bow down, stubbornness, relying to the other to take the first step. All this belonged to Mayank'sdepartment for them both otherwise they were the coolest Mother-Son duo when it came to handling all the other colours of life.

This time Varun had made another mistake. He and his friends, some his age and some were older than he was, had played a prank on one of their neighbour's and the person, a 50+ Man, had got injured rather harmfully.

Nupur was miffed to limits. This wasn't what she had aspired for her kid to be. He was more of supposed to be like Mayank, never going wrong anyways. Besides, she was much more concerned with his growing years. The bad influences may never fall short and she couldn't care more to protect him from going anyway wrong. Fine, he was sorry and had apologized to Nupur and she had even explained to her crying son what all she feared and what she expected of him. She had poured out all her heart's affection to him along with her concerns.

She couldn't think of anything that would rectify it all in near future. Hence, she knew she was about to take a harsh step towards it.

She had simply asked Varun to stay away from those friends of his for sometime but she saw how listening to this plea of hers hurted him. It seemed he had been given a big hurtful punishment but Nupur couldn't bear to watch him so.

She had rather given him permission to mingle with them again but with warnings that he wouldn't let any of their negatives affect him at all. He would learn from his mistakes and she was sure he would.

But it wasn't the same for Varun anymore, since he wouldn't divulge in any of their 'oh-so-merry' pranks and tricks. His problems didn't end there but he knew he was doing it right since his Mom said so.

Nupur was observing it all but she didn't want to bother Mayank by it all. Infact she wanted to do all in her might for Varun.She wondered how at such a short age, there had been such a big influence of friends in his life, in her times, that didn't matter to her much as much as her family's surroundings. But then things had changed she assumed.

She felt even worse when Varun himself started avoiding his friends, for her words. He was behaving mature and she was proud as much as she was dis-heartened. Was she being too harsh on him, she wondered?

She had tried to nudge him to join with all the enthusiasm she could manage, but he didn't seem interested anymore. She felt lost for directions for once. Apart from that her work load was also taking its toll on her.

Varun eventually did join his friends again but his mischiefs were hidden now. He had lied once or twice to her and that was it for Nupur, she wasn't helping him in it anymore.

Mayank's mom suggested the idea of sending him to the boarding for the change in him that Nupur wanted to see.She had done this innumerable time, already. Him getting all disciplined, it would be a good change for him too and she also placed this is how Mayank had grown all, as balanced as he was. Even Varun would have new friends, and would slowly learn all on his own.

Nupur hadn't agreed initially and had denied it outright everytime earlier. She couldn't let him all away from her eyes while he learnt new lessons in life.

Nupur was surprised at the situation peeking at her. He was just a kid and he hadn't seen anything about life at all but he seemed so adamant. She needed to discipline him and she needed to discipline him right.

She asked Mayank, but he had denied it outright on the phone, he was shocked at Nupur's words and he tried hard to show up how it meant so emotional unwellness to him.

Nupur was confused, Mayank was against it, Mayank's parents were almost glad for executing it and Varun didn't mind it either. She wondered if it would be the right thing at all. She had asked it to him too and he had replied, "No Mom, I don't mind going to the new school". She told him clearly, "Varun, maybe they aren't your true friends as much as you are their's. You need not change anything or yourself because someone doesn't accept you the way you are. You NEED NOT LIE to your Parents for anyone in the world for only we care for you for the fact. They aren't important enough". She couldn't believe the complications that came with this new age now, even kids weren't spared those. Most importantly she didn't want Varun to change at all, not for anyone, because he was eventually turning out just perfect and her fears were soon conquered by her pride for him. But why did he want to so much settle in with this new set of friends for anything at all.

Nupur was dicy and somehow knew she was may be being too strict to but Varun needed it, she supposed. Although this one year seemed like an eternity ahead of her and it eventually did turn out all that. This year gave her pain, enough for an eternity from all sides, internally as well as externally. She felt deserted.

Varun still persisted and Nupur had agreed for just a year. It was just around the time his vacations had ended and a new academic year had started that she had got his name written in the same boarding school as Mayank's.

Mayank and Nupur had had so many arguments over it on phone and when he had returned, they had almost had Big fights over it. Mayank would never bring up what his real reason of detesting this idea was and he would never believe Nupur' promise that it was her decision just for a year.

Nupur would never understand why Mayank never even tried once to understand her situation and Varun's own will and even the fact that how she felt a void now in her, what with Varun being away from her and Mayank's not certifying her decision and discarding it as a crime.

All was scattering and shattering. Mayank would, on his own, alone visit Varun often without saying much to Nupur. Nupur would get to know it all from Varun when she would visit him separately.

Mayank had almost curtailed his talks to Nupur. She had cried, apologized,argued, tried and tried but Mayank had gone away in an unnatural silent zone which Nupur didn't know how to bring him out of.

He had even accused her of uncertain issues which Nupur didn't ever even look at that way. She had got promoted and was giving most of her time to flourish work at her new position but all was half-hearted all seemed worthless suddenly. She, maybe, had made a mistake but why wouldn't Maynk just talk to her straight for once.

All he said was - at the peak of his voice -

"He was just a kid Nupur, how could you take his help in deciding for him?"

"My parents suggested and you accepted, is he your kid or their's? Why would you ever think logical and why didn't you then listen to my suggesteion….EVER THEN?"

"May be your new position interests you much more I guess, responsibilities and dedications sometimes have to be diverted, I have seen much of that earlier too. Well, not new for me….Good for you…all the best for your great life ahead Nupur!"

"Thanks for leaving Varun all on his own. Maybe you wanted to distance yourself from him all along. I was silly enough to try everytime that it never happened. Sorry Nupur!"

Nupur didn't know how suddenly her life had come to such a position. She was shattered inside and offended outside. She was just counting days before Varun came back.

But sooner she saw Mayank asking for a transfer for himself in Gujrat and he just came about one day, packed up all his things and left for another city without explaining much to Nupur.

Nupur had never ever cried that way earlier as on that day. Had Mayank just left her all alone, but all he accused her off was wrong, maybe she had made a BIG mistake listening to Varun's pleads this once, but she wasn't what all he thought. On second thoughts, he had never clarified what he thought of her now.

All it did was to leave her lifeless for nnumerable breaths.

Mayank, on the contrary, couldn't help comparing this situation similar to his. How could he ever let that happen to his own kid the one that happened to him, once, the one he promised to himself that his child will never face that. How could Nupur have been so immature and selfish and non-sensical and somehow like his Mom this once? How could she do this to Varun. He hated her for that! Perhaps, he couldn't ever, but this wild agitation in him felt devastating, merciless and incooperative, completely.

He just waited for Varun's year to end, he didn't want to trust Nupur for her words this time about Varun returning back in a year, he would do it all on his own. He would raise him all on his own, he didn't need Nupur at all for that, no he wouldn't, he kept repeating to himself. All that was supposed to be done now was for Varun, his love his care, his life. Mayank and Nupur had somehow taken a back-seat. And Mayank didn't want to look back now at all. Not until he saw Varun hail and healthy and in his own house.
