A Night to Remember
Five
For a fraction of the second, she was lost as she just lost her life which she got before few hours and then, she was alone, lost, frozen, broken and lonely.
With a sudden feeling of rage, she got up as she noticed that he was not gone, he was just unconscious, he needed medication, and they had no time. She got up fearfully and looked at the gunman. He was tall, dark and fiery; his eyes were restless as they never found peace. His face was scary enough for her to haunt her for few decades, he was well armed but he was hiding from something or he was getting ready for another fight. She, with a strange feeling in her eyes looked at him, straight into his eyes, and before he could do anything, she started,
'Listen to me once...just once...'
She had no idea why and how she was doing it and what she would say to him, but she was relieved for a part of the second as she saw him, interested in her, he seemed like he was going to listen to her. She was trembling, and she again started saying it, confidently,
'My... My name is Geet. I am twenty nine years old, and I was married once, but before three years I asked my husband to divorce me, and he gave it to me after being such a pain in ass...I lost my son...my unborn child after the night I left him, I...I was always alone, I never saw my parents...The only person on the earth whom I can possessively claim to be mine, forcefully or with begging, is the man whom you shot brutally before few moments...The person lying here...by my legs is my husband...I don't know what will I do if tonight he would leave me...but I know one thing, it took me years to get him, we have seen such struggle and crossed paths through pains and extreme pain, and finally, conquering each and every hurdles, I...finally found him. I was home before few hours and I...I would not forgive you for taking away my life, my home, my love, my husband. I just got him back after years...It took me long, a very long irritating years to understand that he is the one who completes me...What I did not see it in three years...I saw it, understood it and felt it this one single horrifying night...He completes me...I need him, he needs me... We are sort of a package deal...always go together...He was just broken and I mend him...and you just can't break him again and break me again...I really don't know why you are here and what you need but you must be coming from a family, right? You are not test tube baby; you must have got parents, sisters, brothers and possibly wife, too. But, I have nothing...but I want to start my own family...I want someone to love me each and every night, I want someone to call me Momma and I want someone to call him Daddy...I want someone to call my child a brother or sister...I am just too young...I have not seen anything yet...Its my starting and probably, you are also beginning...I don't give a damn why you are in this selfish, misleading way...Totally useless and violent path...but I am not and if any one amongst three of us who deserves to die...is certainly not him or me. We have a right to live, to love and to enjoy and you have too but looking at you...I don't think so I would possibly grant you a chance when you have killed innocent people...No...Never...But you...please...let me go...Please...Let me take him with me...He will die and I will shatter...I want my life back...Please let us go...'
She said in quick breath, without even a single drop of tear in her eyes, as she knew man like him; generally do not like tears at all. They found tears as a tool and they call it drama, so she blocked all her tears. And, looked at him with hope, he stopped there for few seconds, as he was shocked by her outburst.
But before he could do anything, she saw many cops from outside running to her for help and then, she bent down again, to check his pulse. And, she placed her hands on her ears as she heard too many gunshots. Eventually, she found the same gunman lying on the other side, completely dead. She quickly got help and they took him to the ambulance, she was injured but not much.
She was leaving the place, the very own place where they used to come and enjoy, and while she was leaving, she saw the same man dead, few men were taking him somewhere, she looked at his dead body once again, what she did not experienced in long years, she experienced in one single night, she got her Maan back, she lost her husband's friend, she finally faced the bitter truth of their life that they had lost their son, she finally confessed to herself as well to him that she loved him and she saw a gunman with whom she was speaking before few minutes, he was dead. She remembered when she was talking uncontrollably and nervously, she saw him in his eyes, basically, they were innocent, for a specific moment she felt that he was not born cruel, his eyes for a fraction of a second, were speaking volumes and it was silent cries, silent pleadings, his eyes were like a child who had some questions. She felt a single drop of tear rolling down her cheek when she realized that he was dead, how ironical that was, she was with him before few minutes and then, he was no more alive. Probably, somewhere in the world, somebody lost a son or brother or father or friend or husband. She took a deep breath and within next minute, she was in ambulance with her husband, holding his hand, asking him to stay with her.

After half an hour she went to check on him, he was still in operation theatre, the doctors were operating on him and she was restless, pacing down and forth outside the door. She could not calm herself down as she was scared. It was late in the night and she was not sleepy, not even thirty, not hungry, not tired, not exhausted. All she wanted was him, safe and secured. But the very worst thing was that, whenever she thought it was over and done with, the next immediate moment, it would start all over again. She was sitting on the comfy sofa after a while and a nurse came and asked her to sign some papers. She read it and put that aside, as she knew, she could not sign those papers as his wife. They were no longer husband and a wife, officially. She sighed deep and rested her head on the head on the sofa. After a while, all of a sudden she remembered that Meera called here again and again, then she checked her mobile; it was nine missed calls from Meera. She instantly called her and told her about everything.
'But why did you call me back then?'
'I called you to inform you that you guys are not divorced yet.'
'What?'
'Yes.'
'But he signed those papers in front of me.'
'I know he signed. But you did not...You forgot to sign it.'
'What?' she jumped with joy.
'Yes.'
'Meera...?'
'Yes'
'Can you do me one last favor? Just throw them away, no tear them apart...no burn them...just destroy them.'
'Okay...Okay...I understood. Congratulations for your saved marriage.'
'No...say it. A new beginning'
And then, she was the happiest woman there, she was happy for her own silly mistake, she was pleasantly surprised that she omitted it and she was saved. Even though they were together, but then, officially, she was his wife. She was still smiling under her breath and a nurse came back,
'Miss. Geet...'
'...Call me, Mrs. Geet! Mrs. Geet Maan Singh Khurana. He is my husband.'
The nursed smiled cute and she asked for the papers, she signed it as a wife of the patient. She knew he would come back, he promised her. She was a woman who was about to take new step in her new life with the man whom she loved and in return, she was loved the same way, sincerely and irreversibly.

It was five in the morning when he opened his eyes only to find his weirdly, newly wedded wife, looking at him lovingly with a bright and encouraging smile. He smiled back and tried to get up; she placed a hand on his shoulder and helped to rest against the pillow. He saw her, with fake anger,
'So are you happy with your so called HERO act?' she groaned.
'Of course. I am. I am happy and satisfied.' He said confidently. His voice was little weak and hoarse.
'Do you have any single idea what I have gone through?'
'Yes.' He was confident.
'I know...I know it all and I wanted to feel it. The pain...that you have gone through, I deserved it.' He said and then, his eyes were moist.
'Maan...' she quickly sat by the side of the bed and held his shoulder tightly.
'Please, I beg you...don't torture yourself. I know we were unlucky as we lost him but it was not your fault, neither mine. It was just awful time. Please, if you want to help me, reduce my pain then please...Don't torture yourself...Please.' She said controlling on her edge of the tears.
He looked at her for a while and then, he asked her to hold him, she leaned on to him, and they hugged each other and they cried. They cried to move on, they cried for their new life and new beginning. They cried for their lost son but with a promise to bring him back.
And, then he broke the hug, kissed her tears away and smiled at her,
'It's a new day, new start and you would not like to start it with sad face, don't you?' he whispered.
And she smiled. She knew she was saved, he was saved and the night was gone, the dark night was gone, a lovely, encouraging, sunny morning defeated the gloomy, mean and cruel night.

After sixty minutes, she held him by his shoulders, and he clutched on to her beautiful hands, he was in wheelchair, and she was standing behind him, together they were ready for a sunrise. The bright sun was about to rise in the east, and the dim, soft and dazzling sunrays were showering upon them, it was a sunrise after slow, steady, horrifying and dark night. She came forward and sat by his legs, and smiled at him. Despite of his condition, he requested the nurse to let them witness a sunrise on the roof of the hospital, she refused for thousands time, but when he convinced her that after long and slow and continuous torture from seven hours, how much they needed it. A moment when sun would come up with new hope and new beginning, they would born again, with each other they would take another birth and they needed it. He convinced her that, a nightmare that they lived through the night could be only vanished by the dazzling and soft sunrays. They needed it, to bury those bitter memories deep down their heart with the sunrise. They needed it, to once again, from all over again, believe in god and Mother Nature. They needed it, just to witness the sunrise and believe that every night has an end, be it slow or fast, cruel or kind, dark or shiny, but each and every night has to end, each night has to surrender itself to the new day, new hope, new start and new life.
She remembered his words he said to the nurse, and she felt so proud of him, she kissed his hands, and wiped a lone tear and smiled once again. He looked at her and gave a small smile, she understood something was wrong. She got up and looked at him questioningly. And he broke the silence,
'Mehra is dead! And so does other people.' He stated as sudden feeling of consciousness came all over to him.
She had no words, she just caressed his face, and then suddenly he asked her to call someone, she refused but eventually she gave up and made a call on behalf of him, he ordered Aditya to immediately set up a fund for those, who lost their relatives that night, in the name of his late grandmother. He asked him to sponsor Mehra's children education in the name of his wife, and lastly, he asked him to not disclose it to anyone. With that he cut the call and looked at her,
'I know I can not give them everything back, but I can at least, help them.' He said, helplessly.
And, she covered her hands to his mouth and nodded her head,
'I know.'

Even though they were saved and they were safe, it took another one month to come out from it, he was physically mended but the injury to their heart and mind was not going to leave them easily. During the month, there was not even a single night when she did not get up with a disquieting sense with a sweat on her forehead and checked for him, there was not even a single night when they did not remember, that horrifying night. In between that one month, they witnessed few nights, with Geet crying endlessly in his lap for entire, clueless and helpless, night. As they say, time heals wounds, and so in their cases, they knew, time would be the great help and they would cross five stages of grief: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and finally, Acceptance. After a month, everything was back to normal; people forgot what happened that night, only those who were saved, or those who lost someone, cared. The scars on their heart and mind was taking time to heal, it was a long process. But deep down their heart, they knew they would never forget that night. Maan and Geet were together but they eventually, found themselves lost in another dark night, and remembered the same dark but cruel night, how they met, how they hated each other, how they came close and how they were together, it was night to remember. A night to remember not only because they found each other, but they were born again with each other, it was a night to remember, because she realized it for the first time that even behind a cruel face, there could be a simple and innocent man. It was night to remember, because he realized it that how much relations mattered, a person whom he known from years as a good, gentle and kind man, whom he never cared to call just to say 'hi' for no other work but just to say he appreciated his work and commitment to his job, just to make him feel special, how he met and lost him. It was a night to remember, because it taught her and made her realize that how strong she was, how brave he was and how they cope up with it, how they fought and survived. It taught them that they had inborn power within themselves to fight, to love and to survive. It taught them that life is short and it is not worth it to waste time for love, to love and to be loved. It was a night to remember, because the dark night, even darker then coal, taught them that, every second, every minute, every hour and every night counts. For them, for their entire life, it was a night to remember for many reasons, for many failures, for their lesson, for their fight, for their survival and simply, for their reunion. Surely, it was a night to remember.
