Chapter 4:
Ritesh Shah
College which had once seemed so tough to handle now seemed so easy. I was sure this would surprise Kanika, my best friend since school. She was in the same college as me, only a little smarter, and hence in electronics, as compared to me, I am in civil. Our class was among all the classes of our batch, the most enjoyable one. It was our antics that annoyed teachers so bad, that the Head of department "HOD" had twice visited our class giving us a pleasant lecture on how they would get us kicked out of the college, disappointingly they had changed their mind at the last moment with a stupid apology letter a weirdo, Shanmugham Iyer from our class had written to our HOD on behalf of our entire class, as though we had asked for it.
Now the HOD thought we were truly sorry and was now a little distracted from us. Sad right? I know. The HOD's company is so very pleasing to us in such a degrading way that we find it quiet annoying to have him not pay attention to us. But again that's how life is right? If you want to win something, you got to lose something.
Although im still not sure what we won out of the ordeal that is worth giving up our great HOD's company, my new college friends Aditya Dixit and Atul Dhingra seem to think we will find out the consequences pretty soon.
Aditya and Atul are two idiots I never thought I'd end up hanging around with. Specifically Atul. Atul was an insane brainiac. Everytime he spoke, it made you look around wondering whether you're the only one who felt like he'd entered some weird scientific world that you understood nothing about. But when he wasn't talking to the teachers trying to act oversmart, he actually sounded normal. He was quiet shy and tiresome at most times, but still, in a really weird way he was fun to hang around with, specially when Aditya was around. Aditya was a guy I could relate to a lot. He was outspoken, fun and extremely annoying, just like me. And with the two of them, life in college was actually quiet enjoyable. There were only three girls in our class, Kajal Mehta, Purnima Tambe and Chayya Sharma.
Kajal Mehta was a boyish girl. If it were me, I wouldn't even call her a girl. She was a complete boy. Everything she did reminded me of boys. Her walk, her talks, everything. On the other hand, Purnima Tambe was downright girlish. She got a "Handbag" to college. She wore shorts clothes to the extremes, that most guys found hot. I find it hard to accept that even now. Purnima was a dwarf. She was so short that her clothes looked like she'd stolen baby clothes from some shop. She was more on the fat side which made her look downright abysmal to even think of wearing such clothes, even worse was I couldn't imagine how she travelled in trains wearing those clothes.
Chayya Sharma on the other hand was a new species in our class, she was unfigurable, she seemed like Atul in the form of a girl, in her behavior, smart, shy and quiet. She was somewhere between Purnima and Kajal. She wasn't totally boyish and she wasn't abysmally girlish like Purnima. She was more on the normal side, and yet she dint like socializing, or rather she dint make any effort to bother.
She was pretty, and wore nice clothes, and hence in the beginning I'd thought she was one of those extremely conceited girls that you met in the pubs sometimes, but no, I had been wrong there. Not a single conceited snobbish girl would've ever given Atul Dhingra a second look, not one. But chayya did. She actually hanged around with him a lot in the practical periods.
In the practical periods, I would pair up with Aditya to perform the experiment and Atul would pair up with Chayya to perform the same. In the beginning heads had turned in their directions whenever such things happened, but soon we got used to them hanging around together, and of course the tragedy that the only normal and pretty girl in the class made an effort to talk to the only lame brainiac in the class.
Half our trimester was over and we were completely loaded with work in the form of assignments and tests. Atul was almost always busy helping Aditya out. I on the other hand had to do all my work alone without any help or guidance. And hence it wasn't news to me when people started saying that I look too tired, or I seem too worked up. What else could I possibly do?
I mostly sat alone these days at the back of the class trying my level best to finish all my work in between these classes. Even on the trains sometimes I would have a book propped open in front of me, trying my best to focus, pushing out all other thoughts from my head. It was on one of these ordeals that I for the first time talked to Chayya Sharma.
She was sitting on the platform in the Andheri station waiting for the train. She lived in Panvel and hence had to change the train in wadala, just like me, I lived in Kharghar. Atul and Aditya lived near churchgate and hence took another train. From my platform I could see them loitering around on the platform adjacent to mine as they waited for the train.
Adityas new love interest, Kajal was also on the platform, and it seemed he was annoying her by singing girlish love songs specifically for her. I knew it was working because I could see a huge scowl on her face. I laughed to myself as I took a seat beside Chayya. She looked up and then without a word she turned back to her phone. I got perked up with the challenge. I started staring at Chayya. If I was going to ever become her friend, it was now or never.
It took just a few seconds for her to look up again; I smiled. She gave me a shifty smile back. I introduced myself even though we both knew each others names. It was one of those things that you just HAD to do to become friends.
"How about getting into the general compartment with me today?" I decided to annoy her.
"How about getting into the ladies compartment with me today?" She gave me a one of those over-smart looks that I sometimes got from Atul.
"You're staying too much with Atul"
"Problem?"
I stared at her. Definitely not the conceited type I told myself.
"Just as long as the ladies don't kick me out."
"Ill do the talking?" She smiled broadly. Funny how much more prettier a person looks if they smile, I thought. She was definitely not a girl I wanted to miss in here, like I had much of a choice, but still.
I wanted to be over smart like Atul and say, "I no longer worry about being a brilliant conversationalist. I simply try to be a good listener. I notice that people who do that are usually welcome wherever they go"
But then I thought, if she knew Atul, she definitely would know this one was said by Frank Bettger.
