CHAPTER-3
He sipped his favorite freshly grounded espresso coffee, the file sticking in front of his eyes. He looked at the clock hanging on the mantelpiece, and sucked in a deep breath. It was 10 minutes past 10 and Geet Handa had still not been able to make it to his office. Today, they were going to discuss layouts in Khurana Constructions, after which they had to check the site in Bandra. As he sat on his chair scowling, the images of Geet floated almost involuntarily in front of his eyes. He had met her so many times in life, and every time, she had burned his nerves in anger and agitation. The things she had done every time they had met were enough to make even the calmest and quietest person in the world scream out in fury and frustration. The flashes of her eyes, vivid with life and joy in them, her musical laughter he had heard a couple of times, her delectable face, which was a mirror of all her feelings and expressions filled his mind.. Her ready tongue, with all its sarcastic and funny remarks, her quick wit, her sharp intelligence- Geet was a totally different type of girl.. But somehow, the Geet he had seen last day was not the same. Was not even close to the Geet he had seen in Mumbai. She had changed, changed a lot, changed for the negative… Had something happened? That night.. that rainy night, when they had met for the last time in Mumbai….Stop it Maan why do you care?… stop thinking about that damn girl!!
He lifted himself off the chair heavily, and glancing at the clock which showed 10:30 this time, stormed out of his cabin in a rage. So unprofessional.. she's actually useless!!
She banged hard against his chest, dropping the files on the floor, and gripped his shirt for support. Maan quickly held her waist with one hand, attempting to still her movements and stabilize her, but ended up moving backwards, and coming to a stop with a thud against one of the walls of his cabin. His other hand which was holding the cabin door open moved away and gripped her waist, closing the door behind them. As Maan looked at Geet, her eyes were squeezed shut, her forehead crinkled in fright, and lips quivering in nervousness. She was waiting for the hard marble floor to hit her, but it didn't. Instead, she was way too comfortable. As she opened her eyelids slowly, the dark pair of irises pierced into her soul again, holding her in a captivating eye-lock. His hands placed on her waist, squeezed gently, still looking at her, their eyes speaking volumes. Maan was standing against the wall, while Geet was plastered against his rock-hard chest, and both were lost in a different world of their own. He slowly lifted his hands to her face, tucking away the loose strand of hair, while her eyes rolled back into her head almost involuntarily, as his warm fingers grazed the soft skin of her cheek. She felt the familiar sparkle of fire in her veins, and she stared back at him, her hands still grasping hold of his shirt tightly. He spoke, his voice low and calm, " Kabhi toh dekh ke chala karo!".
The phone in the cabin rang, and its shrill ring broke the two out of their special moment, and jerked Maan back to his senses. He let go of Geet so suddenly, that she threatened to tumble over again. She looked at him angrily, steadied herself by holding the wall tightly and bent down to retrieve the files from the ground, when his voice roared in her ears, " Tum dekh ke nahin chal sakti ho kya? Aur itni time pe kaise pohoch gayii aap Ms. Handa? Saare parivaar ki khatir daari ho gayii? Aapne paati ko breakfast deke aayi ho na?"
The words pierced her heart and soul like needles and thorns. She looked up at him from the ground, her eyes filled with pain and hurt. Maan looked away immediately, and walking over to his desk continued scornfully, " Aab woh files uthane mein kya pura din lagaogi? Do you mind if we start the meeting, Geet?"
Geet stacked the files on top of each other noisily, and stood up, her back straight, her head held up strong and rigid over her shoulder. She turned around for a moment, standing with her back to him, closed her eyes tight, praying silently for a few seconds..Nahin Geet.. abhi mat rona.. iske samne mat rona… dobara iske samne mat rona.. get a grip on yourself, Geet Handa… control yourself….She snapped her eyes open, now fully in control of her emotions. Her eyes were blank again, having pushed back the layer of tears which were threatening to fall down any moment. She turned around, and walked towards his desk, slamming the files down with a bang.
She leaned down towards him, and said in a cold voice, " Number 1, main dekh ke chal rahi thi, lekin Mk tornado ke samne toh koi bhi gir jayega. Number 2, main shayed aur time se pohoch jaati, lekin yeh files aap kal mere office pe chor aaye the, inhe lene gayii thi main.. And.. the others are.. well, the other questions are strictly personal.. so I choose not to answer them. And now, if you're done with the interrogations, I will be waiting for you in the conference room!!".Having vented it all out, she stomped out of his cabin.
Now he's soft.. now he's stern.. yeh insaan toh mere samajh ke bahar hain..Geet thought, as she made her way towards the conference room, where the rest of the staff was already seated, and discussing the details of the blue-prints.
As soon as she left, Maan banged his fist hard on the table. This girl has some cheek!! Himmat kaise huwi iski? He picked up the files, and shuffling them in his hand, realized that they were extremely important for today's work, and he had left them in Geet's office last day… She was right!! He felt a pang in his heart, almost unknowingly, as he recalled how her eyes had darkened with sadness when he threw those questions at her ruthlessly. Maan ran a hand through his hair, pushing it back. Geet was not the average type of girl, she was different, she was unique, she was…MAAN!! The voice at the back of his mind screamed out relentlessly. One last time.. STOP thinking about her.. JUST BLOODY STOP!!
He closed his eyes, wiping away the tenderness, and plastering the usual scowl on his face, got up, and picking up the files, made his way towards the conference room for the group discussion. However, as he neared the room, the musical sound wafted to his ears, and he stopped dead in his tracks. The sound was so melodious, so serene, and so pure. He stood outside the door, his eyes devouring the sight he saw in front of him. Geet was sitting in the middle of almost 5 or 6 people, the pencil held gingerly between her delicate fingers. She was leaning down on the table, supported by her elbow, and her eyes were looking towards Adi. But, the only thing which registered in Maan's mind was the harmonious sound of her laughter. She was chuckling uncontrollably, toppling over from one side to another. Everyone else in the room was also in a joyous mood for some reason, but it was only Geet that Maan's eyes were fixed upon. She leaned back in the chair, smiling widely, then burst into laughter again, as Romeo said something inaudible to Maan. The sight was so breath-taking that Maan felt a tug at his heart. It had been a long time, he had seen Geet laugh. Though, there were still some restraints on her laugh, atleast, the color was restored to her cheeks momentarily. The color which he had seen in Mumbai, the color which was permanent back then, but which had been lost for the last few days. He could still feel, somehow, that Geet was not laughing heartily, her smile still didn't reach her extremely expressive eyes, but he felt something within himself, when he saw even the slightest bit of expression in her. He almost smiled, himself, as he continued to take in the enchanting sight in front of his eyes, when abruptly, the magic broke.
Geet was suddenly nudged by Meera, who pointed towards her phone with her eyes. Geet's laughter stopped, then blurred, and then disappeared almost immediately from her delectable face, as she glanced at the screen of her cell phone. She stiffened in her chair, and dropped the pencil on the table, almost in a gesture of surrender. Her face became pale, her lips quivered in nervousness, and she looked at Meera, who nodded slightly. Geet clutched the phone tightly in her hands, got up from the chair, walked slowly, almost reluctantly to the extreme corner of the room, stared at the phone for a few more seconds, before finally pressing the button after inhaling sharply and painfully, and held it against her ear.
Maan felt a surge of anger burst within himself, when he saw Geet's laughter being interrupted and snatched away by the call. He stormed into the room, and took his seat, banging his files on the table. He shot a glance towards Geet, who stood in the far end of the room, her head dipped low, as she listened into the phone, without talking, and occasionally muttering a yes or no. As he tore off his gaze from her reluctantly, and glared at the staff, a heavy silence spread over the room. The air filled with bated breaths, as everyone sat quietly, awaiting their orders. Geet was suddenly aware of the peace and silence, and as she jerked her head to look behind, the dark pair of eyes captivated her again. She held the phone to her ears, and stared at him, drowning once more into those depths. However, this time, his eyes were filled with raw rage and fury, as he shouted, " Can we get to work everyone?"
Geet looked at him, as he turned his eyes away, and immersed himself into the file in front of him. She bit her lips, and muttered an " Excuse me!!" before leaving the room as quietly as she could. Maan slammed the file on the table, and started roaring instructions and orders to everyone. It infuriated him, that Geet had just left the room for a phone call… a phone call which had made her gloomy again.. a phone call which had stopped her laughter, something, which she was probably doing after many days… Still, that phone call was so important to her… more important than the meeting.. more important than… He shook off his incoherent thoughts, trying to concentrate on his work. But the more he tried to focus on the blue- prints, the more he could think about her only. Why did she seem so melancholy these days? Who called her? Who is she talking to? Why did she seem upset and disturbed all of a sudden?
Maan… there is something fishy about this girl, and you know that. Just stop thinking about her, you shouldn't care whether she is happy or not, whether she laughs or not… It's just a matter of 6 months.. and anyway, females are useless, and who could be a better example than Geet Handa? Geet chose this moment to enter the room, and just as Maan finished lining his thoughts of her with utter hatred, she quietly sat down on her chair, and placed her cell phone on the table even more softly. She kept her eyes strictly down on the designs in front of him, when Maan's powerful voice boomed in her ears, " Agar sab ke personal phone calls attend karna khatam ho gaya hain, toh kuch kaam karle?"
Geet looked at him, mentally abusing him with all her might. She sat there, staring at him, thinking about ways she could torture him to death, and unknowingly, a smile crept on her lips. Meera nudged her, raising her eyebrows in confusion. Geet simply nodded her head in negative, and giving Maan a deathly glare, resumed her work.

The office was already prepared to leave for the site inspection. Geet rolled up the thin sheets of paper carefully, tying them up securely with a rubber band, when Maan barged into her cabin. She jumped at first, then quickly getting a grip on herself, turned around, and said coldly, " Aap knock nahin kar sakte?"
" Kya kaha tumne? Main knock karke aaun? Woh bhi TUMHARE cabin mein? Aakhir tum ho kaun?" he sneered at her, while moving dangerously close.
" Main…" her words were replaced by a shrill and loud shriek, as the lights went out, and the whole room plunged into darkness suddenly. Oh No!! Anytime now!! Even before his mind had finished warning him, he felt a strong grip on his bulging biceps, as Geet clutched hold of him tightly, and moved closer, reducing the distance between them. Her voice trembled as she spoke," Yeh…yeh… yahaan..yahaan pe light kaise chali gayii?". She gripped Maan even more tightly, looking all around her, as if expecting one-eyed monsters, and demons to spring up from the ground and eat her alive. Her breath rose, her heart thudding loudly in her chest. Maan raised his hand to jerk her hand off, when her nails pierced into his skin, and he spat out, " You're still scared of darkness?"
25 Days earlier- Mumbai
He e-mailed the final mail of the day to the clients from his blackberry phone, and pressed the button for the lift. He was at the Hilton Hotel, for a business meeting, trying to wrap up work, so that he could return to Delhi as soon as possible. As the lift came, he got into it, and was just about to press the button for the basement, when a girl barged into the lift, almost shattering her body against the strong electric doors of the lift. She panted slightly, as she looked into his annoyed eyes, and opened her mouth to say sorry, but her words froze, when they saw each other. " YOU!!!" she almost shouted, as the lift door closed.
It was the second time they met, after their encounter in the shopping mall. That fateful day… Maan looked at the girl, dressed in an anarkali kameez, in disgust, as he recalled the scene she had created in the mall that day, lamenting over a cheap useless down-market chain and then blaming it all on him.. He wrinkled his nose in utter distaste, as Geet stood with her back to him, deliberately avoiding him as hard as she could. As they outstretched their hands to press the button to the basement, their knuckles brushed against each other, and a strange tinge of fire floated through their veins. They looked at each other, and, in no time, found themselves staring into each others' eyes again. Maan saw the twinkle in her eyes again, but suddenly, she peeled off her glance, as her cell-phone rang shrilly. Just as she was about to pick it up, the sound of a huge crash almost deafened them, and the next thing they registered was that the lift had stopped moving, and the lights had gone off. Geet screamed loudly, and groped about in the dark desperately. As soon as she found Maan's arm, she held it tightly. Maan clucked irritatingly, and lifted his hand at once, to pry her hands off. " What the hell!!" he exclaimed, when Geet said raspily, " Please don't leave me, please stay close to me…I..I'm ssccaareed..I'm scared of darkness.PLEASE!!"
" Yeh koi naya taarika hain kya? To frame guys? Acting as the damsel in distress, and expecting guys to jump up to help, and then betray them?? Huh!! Scared of the dark!!"he sneered, looking at her scornfully in the dark.
Just as he was done, the lights came, and the lift started moving with a bang. Geet immediately let go of his arm, and spat out, " You're not human!! I am sure aapka iss duniya mein koi nahin hain because no one lives with an animal.. I wont take your help even if you're the last person on Earth!"
******
As Maan recalled her words, he suddenly realized that Geet had still not answered his question. He felt her grip on his hand, but it was weakening. " Geet!!" he cried out, as he felt her breathing laboriously. " This is a phobia.. I cant get rid of it Mk. It just cant vanish!!" she said between deep breaths, but Maan was not interested in hearing the answer anymore. The last time, the lights had been out for only about 2 or 3 minutes, and so, Geet had behaved quite normally. But this time, it had almost been 10 minutes that the lights were out, and, he realized painfully, that she was probably feeling nauseated. Almost as a reflex, he gripped her hands tightly, holding them close to his chest. He slowly whispered, " Geet, breathe normally, see, I am here..You're not alone..the lights will be here any minute. Geet.. just relax, okay?"
He slowly sat her down on the carpeted floor of the cabin, and lowered himself beside her. She huddled closer to him, and, on an impulse, Maan put his arms around her, holding her securely against him. He spoke softly, trying to calm down her thudding heart, " See..Geet..you can feel me, right? Main tumhare saath hoon, just calm down, okay?". As Geet took deep breaths, she felt a feeling of deja-vu slip in. She, Maan and darkness- they had been together before, she recalled, and her mind raced back to the surrounding memories. She had went to the Hilton Hotel that day to meet her and HIS friends…everyone was so happy, everything was planned and fixed at that time. She sighed sadly, something which didn't go unheard by Maan. He tightened his grip on her, and just then, the lights came, illuminating the room heavily.
Geet heaved a sigh of relief, and stood up, her legs wobbling a little. Maan immediately stretched his arms to support her, but she was quite recovered. However, as Maan stared at her face, he was taken aback by what he saw. The strong Geet was replaced by a flustered one, beads of sweat lining her forehead, her eyes full of fear and nervousness. As she saw him looking at her like that, it finally hit Geet. Maan Singh Khurana had again seen her in a weak state- something which was forbidden for everyone.
PRECAP: He has seen everything, he has been there every time. The question is, how much he knows!!
