CHAPTER-18
Geet felt the cold air touch every bone of her body, freezing her in anxiety and nervousness. She had never felt this sensation before in her life. But, then again, there were a lot of things she had never felt around her before. So many new things in her life these days, she thought, as she took a deep breath.
" Geet, I thought, you would work in your office for the whole of this week." Adi asked, as Geet entered the main office area of Khurana Constructions.
Geet tried to form a response to the very obvious question. She was the one who had called up Adi that night in tears, to tell him, that she was no way going to work around Maan atleast for a week. But, she was back within four days. And, she had no idea what and how to explain things.
" She will work only with me." The voice boomed over the entire office, but, as usual, washed completely over her, making her lose her senses all over again.
Maan came behind her, standing extremely close. Geet closed her eyes slightly, not wanting to turn and face him. She already felt her stupid knees almost melting to butter, and she knew that the minute she looked into those eyes, nothing could hold her back from doing something stupid.
" Yyess ssiir… I mean…" Adi's words hung in the air, as Maan held Geet's hand and led her to his cabin. The whole staff stared as if they were frozen by surprise. As for Geet, she was too dazed to even try and free her hand from his grip. Once, they were inside the cabin, Maan closed the door, and gently cornered Geet against one of the walls.
He let go of her hand, and held her gaze tenderly. She looked back at him, with numerous emotions playing in her eyes. Geet opened her mouth to say something to break the awkward silence, when Maan said in a low voice," Tum phir kabhi mujhe chorke nahin jaogi, Geet, samjhi tum?"
As she continued staring at him, without talking, Maan walked off towards his chair. As he sat down, he said," Site ka kaam toh aapne bohut acche se supervise kiya hain, for the last few days. Aab paperwork bhi kuch kar lijiye, Geet Handa, ji." He said the "Ji" in an extremely sneering voice, and that gave Geet her speaking ability back.
" Mujhe toh aapka kuch samajh hi nahin aata. Saach kaha tha kal Daadima ne, aap battameese hi hain." She stopped talking, as Maan's eyes blazed back at her.
" Tumne aapni Daadima ko mere baaremein kya bola? Why did she call me battameese?" he said, angrily.
" Maine sirf saach bola Mk. And, she is smart enough to know the rest, you know." She said with a giggle, and started leaving.
Just near the door, Geet turned, and on a sudden impulse, did something she had never done with anyone in life. She stuck out her tongue at him.
Maan glared at her, and stood up, as she scuttled away giggling.
" Geet Handa, come back here. Come back right here." He screamed, as Geet ran off to her cabin. The door to Maan's cabin was open, so his entire staff dropped their jaws for the second time that day, as they heard Maan yelling.
" Mere samne mu bana rahi thi…" he muttered to himself, " Main nahin chorunga…" Maan kya kar raha hain tu? Stop behaving childish…stop behaving..he stopped as the word occurred to him, human.
Geet makes me feel real, she makes me feel human.
Ek toh inke samne thik se mu se kuch baat nahin nikalti hain aajkal… aur aab yeh… Geet abhi bhi waqt hain, get a grip on yourself… She shrugged off her thoughts, as the phone rang.
She leaned over and picked it up, and almost dropped it again.
" Geet!" he growled, " agar tumhara bachpana khatam ho gaya hain toh, mere cabin mein aao."
" Main aapki employee nahin hoon. Agar kuch chahiye, toh aap mere cabin mein aayiye. We sit just beside each other, remember, Mk." she said, deliberately stifling a yawn.
Maan straightened in his chair, and said," Yeh mera office hain. Yahaan jo main chahta hoon, wohi hota hain, samjhi tum?"
" Toh thik hain, main aapne office chali jaati hoon. Wahi se baaki ka kaam kar lungi." Geet widened her eyes as she said this.Geet yeh sab kya baatein kar rahi hain tu Mk ke saath?
Maan stopped arguing immediately, and blurted out," Nahin, tum mat jao. Main aata hoon…tumhare cabin mein." He slammed the receiver down, and in the next minute, brought his fist down on the table too…Maan kya kar raha hain, tu? Usski baat kyun maan li tune? Why did you get scared when she threatened to leave?
*****
He was extremely angry on himself, when he barged into Geet's cabin. But, the minute he saw her panic-stricken face, he felt all his anger melt away and make way for concern.
" Tonight. Hotel Room. Alone. To sign the contract. What the hell, Romeo." A flustered Geet spoke into her phone. She looked up, and pleaded Maan with her eyes to wait for some time, and take a seat.
Maan felt himself settle down, without removing his eyes from her face. She talked for a few more minutes, and then hung up. Running her hands through her hair in a surrendered sort of way, she lifted her eyes up to Maan, and said, as nonchalantly as she could.
" Ha Mk, sorry. Boliyen, what's the problem?" she said, calmly, but her ruffled nerves were something that didn't go unnoticed by Maan. He had learnt to read her a little too much these days.
" Tum bolo. What happened? And what were you talking about on the phone?"he said, leaning forward, and asking her authoritatively.
Geet looked at his determined eyes, and sighed loudly.
" Nothing much. I don't know whether you know or not, but some clients of mine sued…." She started saying, when Maan cut her short," Ha, I know. Adi told me. What happened, Geet? Tell me.."
She looked at him again, but saw traces of something in his eyes which urged her to continue.
" Actually, the Patel Deal went through some problems, so they sued us. But, we don't want our reputation at stake, so we agreed to sign the contract on some of their terms. But, Romeo just told me, that the MD wants me to go to his hotel room tonight, alone to sign the contract. And, I…"
" You are not going." His words rang in her ears, as he ordered her. Geet blinked her eyes in surprise, as Maan pulled his file, and said, " Now, about what I came…"
" No, wait…" Geet placed a hand over his on the file. Maan looked down at her grip, and then back at her, when she removed her hand as quickly as she had put it there. Maan felt a sensation in his heart, as soon as she lifted her hands off of his. Something in him wanted to tell her to keep it there.
" I mean, Mk..it's not that easy. The contract has to be signed, and I've agreed to their terms. Mujhe jana hi hoga."
" Send someone else to sign it." He bit out.
" I can't. The papers wont be processed unless they have my signature." Geet said, her head lowered, and hands folded in front of her.
" Fine, take someone with you." He said again, slightly furious.
" He told me to come alone." She jumped up, as Maan banged his fist on the table loudly, rattling its contents.
" You. Are. Not. Going. To. His. Room. Alone. At. Night." He pronounced every word clearly, getting up from his chair, and walking to hers, placing his hands on the arms of her chair, trapping her completely.
Geet felt slightly intimidated by his position, and his tone, and said, " lekin…" when she felt two fingers on her lips.
" Kaha na… no."
She whispered, just for him to hear against his fingers, " Mk, kuch nahin hoga… I'm not scared. Main papers sign karwake chali aaungi…"
Suddenly, Maan grabbed her by her arms, and raised her from the chair. She was taken by surprise, and before she could gather her thoughts, and try to do something, he had her pinned on the nearby wall, between his body. She tried to release herself from his grip, but he squeezed her waist, and plastered her more tightly. He leaned in closer to her, placing her hands tightly against the wall. Geet widened her eyes in fear, as Maan continued to lean in closer. She stifled a gasp, as she squeezed her eyes shut, and felt his breath on her lips.
" This is what and how long it will take for him to do something to you which you don't want, Geet. Now, do you get it?" She opened her eyes, as she felt his mouth near her ear. He looked into her hazels, as she stared back at him, dazed. Slowly, Maan released his grip on her hands, and held her more loosely against him, still not letting go. Geet stared at him, fluttering her lashes, and unable to tear her gaze from his face. She noticed for the first time, that his black eyes, usually filled with anger, were now filled with a fire. A fire, which could burn everything and everyone else, yet, only succeed to make her warm and comfortable. She slowly lowered her eyes, unable to take his searing gaze any longer, and put her hands to his chest slightly pushing him. Maan moved away immediately, as Geet gathered her composure.
" I will pick you up tonight. You will go with me." He said, firmly, glaring at her.
She only nodded her head, not finding the will or strength to fight or answer back. Maybe, because she believed she knew a hopeless cause when she saw one. And, she knew, that Maan would no way let her go alone there. He had made it clear with his words, eyes, and well, body language.
" I have a car…" she mumbled, but was silenced immediately, as Maan closed in on her, and leaned over, " I know, and I don't care, Geet."
He left her cabin, and walked out, as Geet dropped herself down on the chair heavily.
Geet Handa… go die… tujh jaisa hopeless case maine aaj tak nahin dekha… it seems as if he creates a spell whenever he is around you, and you lose all abilities to control your speech, body, hormones and mind..Damn it..yeh sab iss Patel deal ki wajase hua hain… Wait, am I blaming it or thanking it? Babaji, he is messing with my mind again… No…
I have always handled things on my own. Pehle bhi, maine isse bhi bohut khatarnak situations mein akele deal kiya hain… Geet woh isiliye, kyunki there was no one to stand beside you. Do you want to tell me, that I now have that person who will stand beside me through everything? No, Mk is just doing this because he heard it by chance. She shook her head determinedly, but, the voice in her mind spoke again, The look in his eyes didn't say he was just doing it because he heard it. Thank God he heard it, Geet, warna agar tu unhe bina bataye jaati, toh woh tujhe mar dalte…and you know that..his eyes said that…
His hands curled into tight fists as he slipped into the waistcoat, that evening. How dare he called her alone to his hotel room? Aise koi contact sign karta hain? It can even be done in the lobby, but, nahin, it has to be his room. Aur yeh Geet, yeh bhi chal parhi.akeli… stupid kahiki… iss ladki ka saach mein kuch nahin ho sakta.. pata nahin how the hell is she so successful.. kuch bhi kaho to, bas ek hi baat, I have always done things alone…blah blah..ek toh she is driving me out of my mind, upar se..
" Maan bete, kahin jaa rahe hain aap?" The voice of Savitri Devi knocked him back into senses.
He turned around, and saw the elderly lady standing near his door, with an amused glint in her eyes. And, that's when he realised that he had said the last sentence out aloud.
" Who is driving you out of your mind, bete? Kiski ya kiska aisi ya aisa himmat hain?" she said with a smile, knowing the answer exactly.
" Kuch nahin, Daadima.. aapke paas kuch karne ko nahin hain kya? And, why don't you knock when you come in?" he said, reaching out for his watch.
" That's because main aapki tarah battameese hoon." The elderly lady laughed loudly,as Maan glared at her.
" Ho kya gaya hain sabko? Jo dekho mujhe battameese kehte rehte hain. Pehle Geet, phir usski Daadima, phir meri aapni Daadima…" He walked out in a huff, grabbing the car keys on his way.
" Oh! Toh Geet dropped it, that I called him battameese… this girl is just perfect." Savitri Devi said out aloud, happily.
*****
" Geet, I am downstairs. Are you ready?"
" Uh..woh aap, niche kyun…aap upar aayiye.." she bit her tongue, as she finally succeeded in saying the words she wanted to. After the morning when Geet had been rude to Maan, she felt that she had to call him up and invite him into her house. And this seemed to be the best opportunity she was ever going to get.
Maan cleared his throat slightly, the same thoughts running through his mind too. The last time he had stepped on Geet's doorstep had been a horrible memory. He didn't want to enhance it.
" No, I…uh..I'm fine..you come down..I..uh..will" he stopped, as he heard that low pleading, apologetic voice.
" Please, Mk?" she pleaded, closing her eyes, and clutching hold of her cell phone tightly.
Maan felt himself fall weak yet again, in front of that voice. He couldn't stop himself, from muttering an okay, and heading out of the car.
As he saw her open her door wide open for him to come in, he felt nervous. Something which he always felt around Geet. He walked in slowly, staring all around him. It wasn't big, it was nothing special, but it looked curiously classy. He tried to find out what was so sophisticated about the flat, but couldn't put his finger to it. He was too busy scanning the house, when Geet cleared her throat to get his attention.
" Coffee?" she said, hesitantly, when he nodded his head for a no.
" Tum chalo, uss Patel ki deal sign karke aao pehle." He gritted his teeth, over the name again.
" Unhone ne toh raat ko jane keliye kaha tha. It's just seven thirty now." She said, with a laugh, which made Maan almost smirk too.
They stood there for some time, smiling, when Geet said," I'll get the files. Aap bethiye."
Maan settled himself down on the sofa, as Geet walked towards her bedroom. She grabbed the files, her cell phone, and her car keys. It was out of habit, because she usually travelled with her own car. As she came out, she said, " Chaliye, Mk. I'm ready." She said, gulping down some water quickly, and making her way towards the door.
Maan held her hand, and spun her around. She gasped loudly, as she fell against his chest, and put out her hands to his chest to stop herself from landing on the floor. But, Maan had her arm around her waist, giving her more stability. She gaped, as he said softly, " You forgot something."
Geet shook her head dazed, and gazed at the file in her hand. She thought she had remembered everything, and looked back at Maan blankly. Maan held her waist with one arm, and used the other hand to pry her hands open, and took her car keys from her, flunging them over, where they landed with a clatter on the sofa.
" You forgot that I am driving you." He said, letting go of her, and heading out.
Geet felt her legs wobble a little, as she stood there alone, staring at the carelessly tossed car keys. She couldn't help feel a little shiver down her spine, and recalled the look in Maan's eyes before he left. They were screaming out something, but she didn't want to think about that, and lose any remaining senses she had.
She just shook her head, clutched hold of her cell phone and file, and walked out of her flat.
PRECAP: He put an arm around her waist, as they entered the room.
