Chapter 2: Ignorance is a Bliss
"Khushi!!!" Shilpa, Payal Di's closest friend, ran up to her & looked at the cards. "They're soo pretty! Oh my god, Payal's gonna love these!"
Khushi smiled. "What are you waiting for? Go show them to her. And tell Payal Di I'm going to bed. I'm really tired."
"Yeah you look tired! Especially your eyes…you've been working so hard for this wedding, go get some rest Khushi."
Khushi smiled weakly & nodded. "Gnite."
She lay down on her bed; she had way too much on her mind to be able to get any sleep.
Lavanya was right. Arnav only used Khushi…he never considered her as a friend. Never.
And what reason did he have to NOT use her? She always saved his butt from Nani, she comforted him when no one was by his side, she always gave him what he wanted, she put HIM before herself.
Khushi started crying again. How long had he known Lavanya for? 3 months. He trusted that HELL CAT more than he trusted Khushi?! How could he?!
That hurt her terribly. How LOW did he think she was? After all the time they've spent together in the past 8 months THIS was how much he knew her?!
She buried her head in the pillow & cried harder. She recalled the first time she had met him.
*Flashback*
She had moved back to New Jersey once she graduated from University of Boston. She moved into the same neighborhood as her Mama & Mami…but not the same house. She drove the U-haul truck into the neighborhood, her mama & mami had promised to help her. But unsurprisingly they "unexpectedly" had to leave & attend a "very important" party.
Khushi didn't let that get to her. She immediately took out the yellow book & hired people to help her move the furniture into her house.
Meanwhile, she decided to start moving the small, trivial objects that she could manage to carry by herself. One of the objects happened to be her parents' frame. While she was getting off the truck, she missed the last step. Her hands let go of the 2 ft by 2 ft frame & head jerked back slightly.
A strong pair of arms caught her waist, thus no damage was done to her…but her eyes were set on the frame. It had fallen facing down. As soon as the arms let go of her, she ran over to the frame, not once moving her eyes away from it.
She closed her eyes & gently turned the faced the frame up. Opening her eyes slowly, she realized it had cracked. A lone tear fell on the now cracked frame. Why did she have to carry it? She knew it was too heavy for her!
The owner of the strong arms bent over casting a shadow over the frame. Still, Khushi's eyes refused to look away from the faces behind the cracked frame.
"They…are your parents?" he asked softly.
"Were." Khushi corrected. She brushed her hand across her parents' faces trapped behind the cracked glass & more of her tears fell on the frame.
"Don't cry…please..." He whispered softly. Khushi paid no attention to him & more tears escaped her eyes.
He took his thumb & gently wiped it across both her cheeks, clearing away the wetness.
Her eyes finally travelled away from the frame to the owner of the strong arms.
Once she looked at him, she couldn't look away. He was, no doubt handsome…but that wasn't what attracted her. It was his eyes that stole the show. His intense eyes were streaked with love & care. The pair of chocolate brown eyes exposed rays of warmth & concern. He cared that she was hurt. He was just a stranger, he didn't even know who she was yet he cared…
"Why do you care?"
He smiled. "I hate it when people cry." His tone was so soft, even his voice brought out the warmth & concern in him. "Besides, your parents probably wouldn't want to see you crying over such a small thing either."
Khushi smiled lightly.
He got up & brushed the dirt off his jeans. He extended his hand to help Khushi up.
At the moment she did not acknowledge it, but right there & then, she had fallen for him…she had fallen hard.
*End of flashback*
The next day he had come to her house with a new 2 ft by 2ft frame for her parents' picture. Later, she found out his brother Aakash's marriage had been fixed with her cousin Payal. Khushi had been so excited back then.
Where was that Arnav now?
Arnav's earlier words of the night haunted Khushi, making her cry harder as each minute passed by. Eventually, Khushi cried herself to sleep.
Arnav threw his alarm far away, dug himself deeper in the bed & covered himself in pillows to avoid the sunlight burning his skin. He hated waking up! Unfortunately, throwing the alarm away did not help. The god damn thing was still ringing. What in the world was it made of?! He threw it hard every single morning for the past 2 weeks & it STILL works! Everything in this haveli was so mighty! The Raizaa family had requested to hold all ceremonies & the wedding itself in this haveli.
He finally made the effort to pull off the covers, get up & switch off the darn alarm.
Then he remembered….KHUSHI! He had to speak with her!
He quickly took a shower, got dressed & ran off to go look for her.
What a typical day, everyone was busy preparing for the engagement which was on Wednesday…well everyone except him.
"Hey Shilpa! Where's Khushi?"
"Porch! She's setting up the lights & decorations for Wednesday night."
"Uhh…Wednesday's 3 days away…why's she setting everything up already?"
"3 days is a short time, you wouldn't know. Oh, that reminds me! Jai Prakash, go give these decorations to Khushi."
"Wait, I'll go give them to her…I was gonna go help her out anyway."
Shilpa's mouth dropped open. "YOU are gonna do work WILLINGLY?!"
"Why not?" That said, he took the decorations & left.
She was trying reach to hang a shiny decoration piece up high. He shook his head.
"Hey shortie! Need help?"
She froze for a second but then continued working as if she didn't hear him.
"Lemme try!" he insisted.
She got off the ladder & started working on the other end of the porch.
Was she ignoring him? Well well welll Miss Khushi, let's see how long you can carry that off for. He hung the decoration piece & went over to her.
He leaned on the wall, crossed his arms & watched her work. Boy she was GOOD at this ignoring thing.
"Khushi, we gotta talk."
Nothing.
"Khushi I mean it. We NEED to talk."
Still nothing.
He grabbed her by the waist & pinned her to the wall. She turned her hands into fists & tried to push him off with her eyes closed.
He grabbed her hands & brought them behind her waist, pulling her closer to him. He left no gap between them for even air to go through. Her scent filled the air around him.
She slowly opened her eyes & frowned.
"I don't wanna talk to you." She pouted.
He smiled, she was too cute! "I know."
"Lemme Go!" Her desperation of freeing herself from his hold showed clearly on her face. He looked her in the eye. "Khushi. Stop moving."
She looked back into his eyes & completely stopped…okay so at least she's listening! Khushi had claimed many times before that she could easily read his eyes. Was reading eyes even possible? He tried reading hers….nope, he saw nothing. Then how did she manage to read HIS eyes every time? He tried again, searching harder this time.
He still saw nothing…well, except something was missing. What was it?
"Lemme go." she whispered, still looking into his eyes.
He got it! The twinkle, the twinkle was missing. Her eyes looked…old & pale, as if they had lost the charm, as if the beauty in them no longer existed, as if the glamour of her eyes was forever gone…as if she had cried excessively last night.
"This is why I tell you not to cry." he whispered softly. He brushed his thumb against her soft cheek. "You cried out the twinkle of your eyes."
Khushi's eyes welled up. He cares, her mind screamed repeatedly. His eyes exposed an infinite amount of concern…he was concerned for her, concerned that she had cried, concerned that HE had been the reason of the happiness stolen from her eyes. Khushi wanted hug him tight & never let him go…but his words from last night stopped her from doing so.
"Khushi" he started again in his soft tone. "I know I hurt you & I shouldn't have spoken to you the way I did…but I was angry. And hey, I also saved your life right? So isn't the score equal now?"
Her tiny nose flared up with anger. Does he not understand the intensity of the situation?! And what was that?! HE saved her life?! HAH! What a joke!
Khushi brought out her hands from Arnav's hold & pushed him as hard as she could.
"DON'T touch me!" she screamed.
From his expressions, Khushi could tell Arnav was taken aback.
"First of all you didn't have to save me! FYI Mr. Arnav Singh Raizada, there were 5 hooligans after me. I got rid of 2 of them by myself & could've taken the other 3 down! I didn't need you or your toy gun to come to my rescue! How could you even let them run away?! Didn't it once occur to you that maybe you should call the cops on them?!"
She scoffed. "And second of all, do you think this is a joke? Arnav, I trusted you! I trusted you more than I trusted myself. I was ALWAYS there for you Arnav…always by your side."
Tears threatened to fall from her eyes.
She softened her tone. "When was the last time you were there for me Arnav?"
He didn't say a word.
She looked down & smiled. "You don't remember? I don't either. You know…when I first met you, I found love & care in your eyes…the love & care which I hadn't received ever since my parents left me. After we became friends, I constantly searched for that love & care…but I never found it. Still, I kept assuring myself you cared for me just as much as I cared for you. I was so wrong…"
She wiped off her lone tear & started walking away but then stopped in her tracks to say the following words to him.
"It's always been about you Arnav, never about me….Arnav I was always a friend to you, but you've never been a friend to me. Never."
Those last words stabbed Arnav hard in the heart…and the worst part was, she was right.
