Part 42
Riddhima was feeling very embarrassed. Why was this athaan so interested in her having a baby now?
Dr: Mr. Armaan, the drugs which we prescribe for an organ transplant patient is mainly to avoid organ rejection. Under no circumstance should a woman patient conceive while on these drugs. Even for women of child bearing age, who have transplant, we advice to try for a child only after 2 years. That's because these drugs cross the placenta and go to the foetus. So we have to change the medicines and observe how the patient reacts to the new drug. We generally advice the patient to try for pregnancy only after they are at least 3 months into the new drug. There's no problem for a man with a transplant to father a child, but since the woman carries the child in her womb, she has to wait. I'm sorry I didn't explain these things to you earlier.
"Ya, he musn't have even dreamt that we would want a baby at this age," Riddhima thought to herself. The doctor continued "But our hospital gynec may be able to advise you better on this. So when you come for her check-up next month, you could also make an appointment with our gynecology dept. But in the meantime I would advise you to please use protection. I don't want to add a birth control pill to the long list of medicines that she's already taking."
Then turning to Riddhima he said "In your admission form you have said that your periods have been irregular for over a year. Renal transplant recipients are known to restart their periods. So don't be surprised or scared if you start getting your periods. But please take care to avoid pregnancy at this stage." Riddhima felt like running away from there. She kept looking down at her hands all the while. When Dr. Sudha had asked such details itself she had felt awkward. Now such an elaborate talk with a male doctor, all because of athaan's madness.
Dr: But otherwise your recovery is going on superfine. So don't be heartbroken with what I've said. God willing, you'll have a bonnie baby in a few years from now. Continue all the medicines as it is and I'll see you after a month.
They got up and Armaan shook the doctor's hand saying "thank you very much doctor." She also mumbled her thanks still without raising her head. As soon as they were outside the room she walked fast, without waiting for her athaan. When he caught up with her and holding her hand asked "What's the hurry Riddhima?" She just shirked his hand away. He couldn't understand what the matter was but he had to go to the reception to make the next appointment. He made an appointment for the same day, with a gynecologist also.
When he went to their waiting cab, Riddhima was already seated in it. Hearing him open the door, she wiped her eyes with the tip of her pallu. He could see that she had been shedding tears. He sat next to her and holding her hands, asked "What happened Riddhima?" "Nothing" she said turning her face away. "Please Riddhima, did I say something hurtful." Once again tears trickled from her eyes, though she wiped it away quickly and said "Let's not talk about it now. I've had enough embarrassment for one day, I don't want to make a fool of myself in front of others," indicating the driver with her eyes.
Armaan couldn't understand what she meant. So he called Suja, thinking talking to her would change Riddhima's mood. But when he handed her the phone saying "Suja" she just spoke in monosyllables. It seemed as if Suja was asking the questions and her amma was only answering her. When she handed back the phone to him, Suja asked "What's wrong? When I asked her whether the doctor said anything bad, she says no. But I can make out from her voice that she is upset."
Turning towards the window he spoke in a soft voice saying "She isn't telling me. I thought she might tell you. Anyways don't worry I'll take care. I'll call you later." They drove to the hotel in silence, as she had closed her eyes leaning back against the seat.
As soon as they reached, she got out and before Armaan could pay the cab driver and come in, she had gone and collected the keys from the reception. When she proceeded towards the lift he said "Riddhima, let's have lunch before we go up. When she didn't show any signs of listening to him he said "Please Riddhima, otherwise your medicines will be delayed." Getting into the lift she said "You go and have, I'll order from room service."
He followed her and as soon as they entered the room, shut the door and holding her shoulder asked "Riddhima at least tell me what's the matter." "Oh so you don't know what the matter is? Good." And with that she just walked into the washroom. He was sitting with his hands in his head when she came out, having changed her saree. By now he was also bugged so he sarcastically said "If you'll kindly tell me what you want to eat, I can order. "Order whatever you please" she said, not realizing how far she had pushed him.
He placed the order and came and sat next to her on the bed. Then putting his arm around her shoulder, held her chin with the other hand said "Please tell me ma, why are you angry?" When she turned towards him with tear filled eyes, she noticed that his eyes also had tears brimming.
R: Why did you have to discuss all that nonsense with the doctor? What must he think? It may be alright in your America to talk so shamelessly, but not in this country. It was so embarrassing. I felt like just running away from there.
A: Riddhima I have asked you earlier also. Are you ashamed to be with me? If it's so please tell me. I'll go as far away from you as possible. I can still go back to the US. I only want to see you happy. I have given you enough problems in the past. I don't want to add to it.
The tears which were hanging on the tip of his eye lashes, fell drop by drop. Only then she realized how much her anger had hurt him. She immediately wiped the tears from his cheeks while herself shedding them and said "Sorry I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. I'm a narrow minded country brute. Not fit for such a forward minded person like you. But if you go away again, I won't be able to live. I promise I'll kill myself." Putting his palm against her lips he said "Never, ever talk of dying. You've just come out from the mouth of death." He then took her into a rib-crashing hug and both of them cried.
After a few minutes, he moved her a little away from himself and holding her face in his palms said "I only wanted you to have something which you deserve very much. I thought of it only for your happiness. And I felt a doctor is the only person who can guide us in this matter. Hence I spoke to him so openly. As I've said before, it's because you think of yourself as a grandma that you feel ashamed of having a baby at this stage. Today even in India women have become career minded. So it's become quite common for girls to get married in late thirties. If after trying for a few years they are unable to concieve, they try artificial methods of conception. So they are almost as old as you when they have a baby."
"It's all in the mind Riddhima. You are only as old as you think you are. Age is only a number. Another thing which bothers you a lot is 'what will people think?' I can understand that's because you've faced their wrath in the past and dread it. But that doesn't mean you bow down to all their dictates. You need to think for yourself, about yourself, what makes you happy. Don't live for the world. Live for yourself." He may have continued convincing her some more but the door bell rang indicating the arrival of their food.
After the waiter left, Armaan served the food in two plates. He had ordered for rotis and boiled mixed vegetable with no spices and very little oil. He handed one plate to her and was about to pick up the other when he saw a morsel being held near his mouth. He smiled and opened his mouth. Then holding the morsel between his teeth, beckoned her with his eyes to come and have a bite. At first she was shocked, but then leaned and bit of a piece off. When he pulled her closer and kissed her lips, she kissed him back and giggled shyly.
Taking the plate from her hand, he put it on the bed and pulled her on to his lap. She didn't protest but both of them took turns to feed each other. She didn't feel so shy as there was no one to watch them here. That made her think over what he had just said. He was right; it was all in the mind. It was her conservative upbringing, which stopped her from openly expressing her love for him. If she wanted him in her life, she needed to show him how much he meant to her.
After they had wiped clean both the plates and washed up, he gave her her medicines. When he asked "Would you like to rest a little before we leave?" She lay down on the bed and pulled him also beside her. Then shifting herself to rest her head on his chest and fidgeting with his shirt buttons said, "I don't know what my destiny holds for me, but I'd be the happiest woman if I could have your baby." Looking up and touching his cheeks she said "That had always been my deep seated desire, which I've never revealed to anyone. Not even to Suja. I had totally given up hopes of it, but if destiny has brought you back to me after so many years, maybe," she couldn't continue as she was choked with emotion. He rolled over, held her face in his palms and showered kisses on it.
When she responded as ferverently, he got carried away. He kissed her neck, and reached to pull away her pallu. But couldn't as it was pinned to the blouse. That brought him out of the daze and he stopped himself, remembering the doctors words. But when she tried to move away, he pulled her closer saying "You belong here, only thing I wasn't prepared for it." Then both of them giggled like two giddy headed kids and closed their eyes for a nap.
Armaan woke up hearing his cell ring. It was Suja. He went outside to talk to her. When she enquired about her amma's anger he didn't tell her the entire truth but only said that it was a misunderstanding and that she was ok now. Then he went on to tell her about the doctor's advice asking them to wait. She sounded disappointed on hearing that, but he assured her that they both were ok with it.
The drive back was quite pleasant as Riddhima was in a good mood. She didn't even object when her athaan put his arms around the soldier or held her hand. It was late evening when they reached home. Rajesh handed them a large envelope which had come by courier that day. When she took the packet in her hand, she jumped with joy seeing that it was from Karan.
Armaan got a pair of scissors when she was trying desperately to open it. They were a few photos of various sizes and a letter. handing the photos to him, she first opened the letter and read aloud.
Dearest Perima,
How are you? Hope you have recovered well from the surgery. Sorry for taking so long to fulfill you wish. Linda and I thought since we were sending you a hard copy we should go to a studio and get a nice portrait of us. Hence the delay. But another good thing happened in the meantime. Arun's band came to New York. We went and met him there. So I'm sending you those pics too. Take care of your health and please get yourself an e-mail ID. It'll be easier to remain in touch that way. Loads of love from me and Linda. Regards to dad.
Your son,
Karan.
She then eagerly held out her hand for the photos which Armaan was looking at. There were a few of only the couple and a few which had Arun also and a 12x10 portrait of the couple in their wedding dress. "My God" she exclaimed looking at the biggest pic. "Athaan, he looks exactly like you did, when you were his age. Hadn't it been for the girl standing next to him, I'd have thought it was you." She said in a teasing tone and laughed. He smiled saying "only his eyes are like Karuna's." "She also looks very pretty." Riddhima said admiring the bride.
A; She seemed to be a nice girl compared to other girls there.
R: Have you met her?"
A: Yes, a few times. She had organized a grand birthday bash for Karan's birthday year before last. The invitees were mostly their friends, but she had insisted that we two must make an appearance. She'd even dragged me to the dance floor and danced with me, when Karan pulled his mummy to dance with him.
Riddhima saw the nostalgic look in his eyes and knew he was missing his sons. Then going through the other photos she said "Arun seems to be a mixture of both of you. But his hair is still as curly as it was in his childhood. He used to wail whenever I tried to comb out the knots." Then hugging the pics to her chest she said "It feels wonderful to see the boys after so many years."
Then she pulled him down beside her on the sofa and went through the pictures all over again with him. He had been sad earlier that his son had not even enquired about him, only conveyed his regards. But seeing her eyes glistening with excitement and joy, his mood also changed. He sat regaling her with some anecdotes about the boys.
