For a moment he was also disoriented and just kept looking at her. But the minute he moved his hand, from her waist, she jumped out of the bed and hugging her saree to herself, scooted into the bathroom. Seeing her behave like a timid rabbit, he wanted to laugh out aloud, but controlled himself and just smiled to himself. He remembered how she had cuddled up to him during the night and it brought a fussy feeling to his heart. He felt 30 years younger then.
Coming back to the present he remembered that she had rushed into the bathroom without taking any clothes. He walked to the closet where Suja had arranged her clothes the previous day. He selected one a red saree with a beautiful green border and laid it on the bed. Then knocking on the bathroom door said, "I'm going out and am closing this room door."
She finished her bath and stood shivering wondering what to do. Seeing his bathrobe hanging on a hook on the back of the door, she had pulled it around herself but was wondering how to step out, when he had knocked. She slowly opened the door a wee bit and took a peek. There was no one about. She stepped out and right then, the door of the room opened. He came in and on seeing her, stopped in his tracks. He stood between her and the bathroom. So she could even rush back there. Not taking his eyes off the floor he said "Sorry, I forgot my specs." Walking to the side table he picked his specs and walked out closing the door behind him, while she stood clutching the robe tightly around her.
Once out of earshot Armaan couldn't control himself and burst out laughing. She looked so funny in his robe, which reached up to her ankles. Rajesh came out hearing his laugh and asked what the matter was. Armaan merely shook his head and continued smiling. Rajesh just shrugged his shoulders, then went in and got Armaan a cup of coffee.
A: I haven't brushed my teeth as yet. I'll ask for it later.
He picked up the paper and began reading. After a few minutes, Rajesh came and informed "Amma, said you can use the bathroom now."
A: Where is she?
R: Outside, doing pooja.
A: Doing pooja outside?
R: Yes, there's no mandir in this house, so she went to worship the Tulsi plant outside.
When Armaan went to see, she had her eyes closed and was pouring water looking up towards the sun. The serene look on her face, the wet hair and the red saree and the contrasting green bouse, he stood transfixed, admiring her beauty. But the moment she finished pouring the water, he moved away quietly without her knowledge.
He went to the washroom and freshened up. Then coming back to the hall and picking up the paper called out "Rajesh coffee." He was engrossed in the paper and hearing the footsteps, held out his hand for the cup. But hearing the jingle of bangles he immediately looked up. She stood there holding out the cup to him with a shy smile on her face.
A: Why did you bother, Rajesh would have brought it.
R: I was making coffee for myself, when you called out to Rajesh. He is outside buying vegetables from the vendor. So I made a cup for you also.
A: You are still recuperating from a major surgery. You are supposed to be resting.
Taking the cup which she held out to him, he gently pulled her down next to him saying "A wife's place is always beside her husband." She chuckled as sat down beside him and sipping her coffee, asked "any particular reason for picking this saree?"
A: You know, I love red colour and it really suits you too.
R: Actually I don't know much about your likes and dislikes.
A: You'll get to know it by and by. Anyways, what's your favourite colour?
She thought for a moment and then said "I usually like any bright, dark colour. I'm not a pastel shade person."
A: Not surprising, a bold person like you will obviously like bold shades only.
Just then Rajesh entered asking, "Ayya, amma, what time do you want to have breakfast and what do you want to have?"
A: We'll have breakfast as usual, at 8 o'clock. Riddhima, what do you want to eat?
R: Anything without much spice is ok.
A: What about idli?
R: Saar, I haven't made the dough. I've soaked rice and dal. I'll make the dough today.
Riddhima enthusiastically asked shall I make something? I'm fed up of resting. I'm dying to be back in the kitchen.
A: Nothing doing. You are not to enter the kitchen till we go back to the village. Rajesh, upma or pongal will be ok. Use roasted gram for the chutney, it has high protein but don't make it very spicy. And remember everything will have half the salt only. Show me what vegetables you've bought. Make French beans poriyal (Dry vegetable) as it has lot of fiber and sambhar with lot of dal in it.
As Riddhima listened attentively to Armaan's instructions to Rajesh, she felt wonderful to have someone so concerned for her. She'd never ever been pampered in her life. Though her mother had doted on her, she never spared her any work. She had brought her up very strictly, making her learn all the necessary tasks for an ideal housewife.
Later on in life she had been the one pampering others. First her athaan, then Karuna (when she was pregnant) and thereafter her sons and the orphanage kids. She had never ever cared or worried about herself except for a short period after her athaan had left her in the village and gone off to the US. But that too had been short lived as her Tulasi mami had become pregnant, and she was soon busy taking care of her needs. Then she had brought home her amulu and pampered her no end. Now it was the turn of her grandchildren, Priyam and the little one soon to come. This joy of having someone take care of her was new to her, but it felt very good.
After giving further instructions to Rajesh when Armaan looked to see why she didn't say anything, he saw thinking deeply about something. Rajesh went in with the vegetables. When Armaan put his hand over hers she was startled.
A: What are you thinking about so deeply?
When she shook her head without saying anything, he said "A wife should share everything with her husband, even her thoughts." She laughed at that and said "Actually I was thinking it's so nice having someone take care of you. It's always been the other way round." Armaan's face dropped at that. Catching hold of her hand he said "From now on, that's how it's going to be and it's about time too." When she tried to extract her hand from his, he held it tighter and raised his eyebrows in question.
She blushed and whispered "If we had done so 30 years ago, no one would have said anything. But if anyone sees us like this now, they'll not only laugh but call names."
A: They can, if we do so in public, but who'll see what we do in the house.
R: Have you forgotten about your 'Man Friday', Rajesh?
A: So you are saying we should keep it to the privacy of the bedroom.
"Athaan, you are just too much." Riddhima reprimanded Armaan while he continued to laugh at her discomfort.
R: You're having fun at my cost, aren't you?
A: You know, from the time I've returned to the village, I've seen you as a cool, collected, school principal only. It's so different to see you so flustered like this. And I like this Riddhima better because she looks a younger version of that one.
Saying "I think I've had enough for one morning, I'm going for a walk," she moved to the garden outside. She was plucking some flowers in her saree pallu when Armaan came right next to her and whispered "Why does a flower need flowers?" She made big eyes at him and said "It doesn't suit a grey haired man to flirt like this." As they walked into the house Armaan asked "What does the hair colour have to do with anything? It'll take only take a pack of dye to change it."
They washed their hands and sat at the table. Rajesh served them upma and chutney. Armaan continued with his banter "So what do you have to say to that?"
R: And what will you use to bring your age from 50 to 20?
A: You are only as old as you think you are. Age is only a number. The heart doesn't know age. Love can begin at any age.
R: Is this a dialogue from some movie or some book?
They joked and chatted like this while they finished their breakfast.
