3. The Surrogate Mother

"Mr. Khurana?" a soft voice broke into his reverie. He turned to look at the person who called him and his heart skipped a beat.

Was this Geet Handa, the surrogate mother? But she hardly looked more than a teenager

"Mr. Khurana," the girl repeated "I'm Geet Handa."

Looking at the delicate girl with sad, haunted eyes, he felt all his protective instincts kicking in. What was he supposed to say to her? She was nothing like the woman he imagined she would be..

"Hello, I'm sorry...?" What was he to say sorry for? Sorry that his brother chose her to be the mother of his child, who hardly looked old enough to become a mother! "...for not contacting you before."

"I'm sorry about your brother...I was not sure if you wanted anything to do with us..." she said looking down, laying a protective hand on her stomach. "...now that..." She let the sentence incomplete, then looked at him earnestly before continuing. "But the doctor insisted that you have to be informed. Thank you for coming."

He could see she was nervous. She kept twitching the end of her duppatta with one hand.

"I know Dev and Naintara's death came as a shock. But you don't have to worry about the baby. The Khuranas never evade their responsibility"

Yes responsibility, which was what her child was now. Gone were the expectant parents who were bursting with joy and enthusiasm when they learned about their child who had found life in her womb. It seemed as though her misfortune was already affecting this innocent, just for being sheltered within her. She had to get away before she started bawling in front of a stranger.

"I need to go...my mother may have woken up and would be wondering about me."

He had noticed her chocolatel eyes becoming bright with unshed tears. What was wrong? he wondered. He didn't want her to go just yet...not like this.

"How is your mother? The doctor said something about an operation."

"They want her to be stable before the operation...if everything is fine, then the operation will be done within a week. I really need to get back...she doesn't know about the child. I don't want her to know...she wont be able to accept it now."

She looked down again and he could see her becoming agitated. He placed a calming hand on her shoulder. But instead of the desired effect, she jerked back and he caught a glimpse of those terrified eyes before she looked down again.

The girl is a nervous wreck, he thought. "Sorry I didn't mean to frighten you I understand about your mother. But can you find some time to meet my Daadi, sometime tomorrow? She is very anxious to meet u. Dev's death was a big blow to her. She will pester me with questions about you until she gets to meet you"

He tried to ease her tension with a smile. If anything the smile seemed to confuse her more.

"Can I let you know tomorrow? I'll call Savitriji in the morning."

"Why don't you call me..i'll send a car for you" and continued when he found she wanted to protest, "no, I insist. That way you would not need to be away from your mother for long."

He gave her his phone number and took hers.

"Okay Geet...may I call you Geet? I find it strange to call my nephew's or niece's mother as Miss Handa!"

She nodded her head in acceptance and walked away.

He stood there and watched her walk away and wondered where he had seen her before. There was this vague familiarity. He was sure it will come to him, but for now he decided to get some background information on her.

"Yes Daadi...I met her..." he answered his Daadi's call as he walked out of the hospital, towards his car.

Okay...found time to update another part, since i thought u guys may be anxious for maaneet to meet...now i'll go back to 'The Golden Age of Guptas', my son's history project😉...
