Having no choice but to comply with the court ruling, Armaan had come to drop Riddhima at his place. Sid had opened the door and let them in. As Riddhima crossed the threshold to walk in, images of the grihapravesh after their first wedding and the time he had brought her home after confessing to her that he loved her had flashed through his mind breaking not just his heart, but his soul too. Not letting any of it show, he'd put on a casual face.
Sid : Kuch logay?
He had asked no one in particular but both Armaan and Riddhima had shaken their heads and declined.
Sid : The guest bedroom has been readied. You can keep your stuff there.
For a fraction of a second, he thought he'd seen something in Riddhima's eyes. Even when they had been at their worst, Riddhima had always slept in Sid's room while Sid slept either in the guest bedroom or on the couch. Today, he'd asked her to keep her stuff in the guest bedroom. What had she expected? Had she thought he would still let her sleep in his room? She had better things to think and worry about than something as insignificant as this, he thought to himself. As for those eyes.. He did not know what those eyes said anymore. They were the biggest liars - for it was in those very same eyes that he had seen feelings for him; that had convinced him that he was important to her and the bonds of marriage that tied them together were important to her - well, the bonds of marriage were important to her, thats why she'd been with him so long, to fulfill her duty, her farz as she put it, but then hadn't she tainted those very sacred bonds when she'd cheated on him? He could not find it in him to trust those eyes again so he looked away.
Armaan : I'll miss you Basket.
Riddhima : I'll miss you too.
Armaan : You take care aur agar koi bhi problem ya pareshaani ho tho please mujhe call karna.
Riddhima had nodded her head and smiled at him.
Armaan : I'll come pick you up tomorrow morning to go to the hospital.
Riddhima had smiled and nodded again. Then Armaan had turned to him.
Armaan : Meri Riddhima ka khayal rakhna.
Sid suppressed the urge to laugh. That's what he'd been doing all along, caring for something, someone who wasn't his. With that, Armaan left. Riddhima watched as Armaan left and then cast a nervous glance in Sid's direction. Sid however, did not even look at her. As she made her way to the guest bedroom, Sid came and sat on the couch and switched on the TV.
He heard noises in the guest bedroom of cupboards opening and closing and suitcases being moved around and though he wanted to shout to her and say "Don't make yourself too comfortable, you are only here for a couple of months.." , he kept quiet. A couple of hours later, she'd come out of the guest bedroom and made her way towards him hesitantly.
Sid : Did you have dinner?
Riddhima nodded.
Sid ; Ok. If you feel hungry you might find something in the fridge. I am going to sleep. Good night.
He'd gotten up and walked off to his room and stayed awake in bed for a really long time before sleep finally came to him.
The next day, early morning, Armaan had landed at their doorstep.
Sid had woken up earlier than usual. Sleep apparently had decided to ditch him too. He'd brewed his own coffee and was sitting in the living room, sipping his coffee going through the newspaper when the doorbell rang. He'd opened the door to find Armaan.
Armaan : Good morning.
Sid : Good morning. Come in.
Armaan : Riddhima kahan hai?
Sid was about to say he had no idea when Riddhima walked out of the guest bedroom.
Armaan : Good morning basket.
Riddhima smiled at him. Her gaze rested on Sid for a second before switching back to Armaan.
Armaan : Wo main tumhe lene aaya tha.
Riddhima : Just give me ten minutes. Main ready hoke aathi hoon.
Armaan : Ok.
Sid had resigned from Sanjeevani and he did not intend to go back there. He had applied at Apollo Hospitals for a 4 months rotation in their surgery department and because of his excellent credentials, they had taken him in at such short notice. He liked it there because people there did not know him. They only knew what he told them. Thankfully, he was rotating with a group of 3 single guys and they'd only once asked him about his status and he'd said he was separated. They never questioned him beyond that. He found their company much more relaxing than the stressful environment at home. So, he spent a good deal of time even after work with them; returning home just to go to bed. In spite of everything, he made sure each night that Riddhima was home and in bed before he himself went to bed. He never asked her where she went, what she did and she never asked him anything either. They avoided each other as much as possible. However, they had to attend the therapy and counseling sessions together.
A sharp knock on the door jolted Sid back into the present and he realized that he had been standing in the bathroom of the flight all this while. He wiped his face and opened the door. An airhostess was standing right outside.
Airhostess : I'm sorry Sir but you were in there for so long we just wanted to make sure you were alright. Are you alright sir?
Sid ; Yeah. Sorry about that.
Sid returned to his seat, reclined back and closed his eyes willing for sleep to come to him. But he had just unlocked what he had locked away for so long and now the memories would not go away.
