PART 11
Recap : Riddhima confesses to Sid that she's fallen in love with him and tries to come closer to him but Sid studiously avoids all her attempts. He drops her off at the Gupta house when it becomes too difficult for him to take. Riddhima keeps trying to make things work but Sid's unrelenting attitude worries her. She goes to talk to Sid and overhears Sid telling Neha that the past few months with her had been torture for him. Riddhima is heartbroken and accuses Sid of cheating on her. Sid snaps and tells her their entire story. Riddhima hates herself after hearing the truth from Sid and leaves. Sid goes to stop her but it was too late.
It was raining; he was following a car that was being driven recklessly. He constantly tried her number." Come on, pick up the damn phone".
He tried to swerve into the next lane to overtake her but she was driving zig zag on the road and he couldn't do it. Then he'd seen the headlights.
Sid : Riddhima!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He shouted as he woke up from bed, eyes wide from shock, hands outstretched, covered in sweat. He was panting away. He realized it was just a dream and let out a huge sigh. He reached over to his nightstand, grabbed the glass of water and gulped it down. Almost every night, for the past three years, the same nightmare had woken him up. He wiped the sweat off his forehead and just then, his mobile buzzed. He picked up and stared at the screen.
Reminder: December 6th. Flight to India at 4:00 pm.
Dr. Siddhant Modi was again on a flight from New York to India; but this time to New Delhi. He was an invited speaker at the International Medicos Conference being held in New Delhi. Three years. It had been three long years since he'd left Mumbai and India and all that it meant to him behind. Once again, the flight gave him too much idle time and his mind inadvertently wandered to his past. He looked down at his right hand ring finger. There was no ring there.
After that day, both Neha and Sid had realized that they could not go through with this charade just for the sake of others. It just wasn't right. So as soon as they'd returned to the US, they'd broken off their engagement. Neha had adopted a baby girl and now she was a successful, happy single mom. Sid had gotten into one of the most famous hospitals in New York with his credentials and experience and had made his way up the hierarchy in no time. He was involved in multiple things ranging from administration, to clinical practice to research. He never gave himself any time to think about anything else except work ' especially not about Riddhima.
Riddhima. He cursed himself for that day he had lost control and blurted out the whole truth to her. He hadn't thought of the state she was in, mentally and physically. He had had so much boiling in him for so long, he'd lashed out without thought. That day had been the worst day of his life.
Riddhima had driven away like crazy and he had followed her. He had tried calling her phone but she did not answer. He had tried to overtake her to get her to stop but she had been driving way too recklessly. It all happened in a flash. He had watched in horror as Riddhima's car had crashed into an oncoming car and skidded off the road. His world seemed to have slowed down to frame by frame as he watched Riddhima's car spin and turn over and over again. He still had nightmares of the accident.
What happened next was still a blur to him. His brain had stopped functioning and his heart had frozen in place. He did not know how he managed to stop his car and get out of it and run towards Riddhima. He did not know how he had found the physical strength in his numb body to pry open the car door and extract an almost unconscious Riddhima from within. He did not know how he had survived alive after seeing her blood covered face and the blood running down her legs. He did not know how he had managed to find his voice to scream her name over and over again - the scream arising not from his throat, but from his heart and echoing into the deep recesses of his soul. All he remembered was that look of extreme guilt, hurt and love in her eyes as she had gently raised her hands to his face; just as her fingers almost imperceptibly touched his cheeks, her eyes had gently fluttered shut and in those few seconds, Sid felt something within him breathe its last - maybe his heart, maybe his soul - he did not know.
Somehow they had rushed her to the hospital and Dr. Aastha had informed him that her condition was very critical. They would be able to save only one - either mother or child and being the husband, it was his call. Sid stood there distraught as thoughts raced through his head. What would Riddhima want? If she had her memory, she would definitely want to save the baby. That baby was the last link to Armaan but if they couldn't save Riddhima.. Who would care for the baby? It was the most difficult decision of his life ever - more difficult than the decision to leave her knowing her happiness lay elsewhere - he knew what was right then and had done that but now, he did not know what was right and he did not know what to do.
Sid popped a sleeping pill and reclined in his seat because he did not want to think of all that had happened afterward.
