Chapter 8 – Post Operative Care

Maan went to take shower. As warm water caressed his skin, he finally let go off all the emotions bottled inside him. He didn't realize when tears got mixed with water. Finally his heart had opened after a long time and he was finding it difficult to grapple with all the emotions swirling around it. All he could think of was Geet and what she was going thru. His brain tried to ask him the reason but he just shirked it around saying that Geet was his childhood friend. She was family.

He wasn't sure of his feelings but there was no way he could hold them any more.

He quickly changed and walked to the ICU where Geet was recovering. Usually, he never involved himself in post operative care due to number of surgeries he was responsible for. But Geet was different. He could not let anyone else do this.

He carefully inspected all the monitors and the charts around her bed. He did not know why but he was overcome by the urge of holding her in his arms. Her innocent face was pale and devoid of any color. Even under anesthesia, she looked tired and worn out. He vowed that whatever maybe the outcome he will bring back the smile on her face.

He moved towards her side and held her in his arms gently. He caressed her hand and whispered in her ears – You are going to be fine Mishti. I am here and you are going to be fine. Tears again threatened at his eyelids which he quickly brushed off. He stood up and paced around the room waiting for her to regain consciousness.

Few hours later….

Geet slowly opened her eyes. She was still groggy with all the drugs in her system. Her entire body felt numb and she felt nauseated as soon as she tried to open her eyes. She murmured – Mummy….Papa…

Maan quickly came to her side, holding her head. Sh..Sh… don't talk. Open your eyes slowly. Geet opened her eyes again to see the dark brown eyes and the face of her savior. For some unknown reason, tears started flowing from her eyes. At that moment, she just wanted to hide herself in his arms. It felt like the safest place to be. Unconsciously, she stretched her free arm. As if Maan could read her, he bent and side hugged her once again. He murmured consoling words into her ears making her calm. He did some quick on the spot test and checked her eye movements.

He buzzed in a nurse in and asked her to allow his dad to come inside. Rishab came and gave a wet smile (his lips were smiling and eyes were glistening), hugged her and sighed. See princess…as promised….we are not going to let anything happen to you….You are safe darling…

Next Two Weeks…

Both Maan and Bauji took care of Geet. They treated her like a glass doll. Rishab stayed with her mostly during the day when Maan attended to his other commitments and surgeries. Though he will pop in during any free time. Maan stayed with her all the nights as it was outside visitors' time and also because Maan insisted that Rishab needed his rest.

Geet was in lot of pain. She could not walk properly as she had lost sensory feelings in both hands and legs. Even mundane task like eating were painful and next to impossible. But Maan and Rishab never left her side and made sure they helped her in anything or everything.

Over last two weeks, her senses were recovering. She could move her hands and legs in coordinated way but there was still lot of pain and she was very weak.

After surgery, Rishab had wanted to call up Raj but Geet didn't agree. She was in a real bad shape and could not face her parents. She begged Rishab not to tell her parents anything yet. After a month, once she is discharged, she will go back to Mumabi with him and Maan and tell them everything face to face. Rishab agreed reluctantly and promised to look after her.

Maan also spent every waking minute with Geet. He would feed her, read her books, update her on business news, talk, gossip and even joke around. Anything that will bring a smile on her face.

He shared with her all the stories from his college time including all his weird girlfriends and their quirks. Geet will forget her pain and her longing for her parents when she was with him. She could just listen to his sweet voice forever.

Rishab noticed the subtle changes in his son and was happy that he recognized his responsibility and had stepped up to the challenge. He was pleasantly surprised.

Lot of you have commented on Geet's parents not knowing the truth. I just want to present my POV. My Geet is a strong lady and she feels that now once it is all done with, she wants her to heal slightly and be present face to face when she tells this to her parents. She knows they will be devastated and that is prompting her to do so. More over she considers Rishab and Maan as part of her family and feels very comfortable with them.
