Chapter 7 – Surgery

Monday, Leelavati Hospital, Mumbai

Surgery is planned for Tuesday. Maan tries to convince Geet to talk to her parents before the surgery.

Maan – "Please Geet, try to understand. You will need their support to go thru this. Moreover, they have right to know about something so important going in your life"

Geet – "No. It had only been three days since Rahul got married. He is to leave for Paris today. I can't spoil his honeymoon. What if something happens to me. Uska chance to 63% hai…hai na….this will be last happy days in his life for some time to come….i don't want him to miss this opportunity. And Mom and Dad will not be able to take it alone. I will manage."

Maan was overwhelmed by selfless nature of Geet. She always kept her family in front since childhood. But he never expected her to retain her innocence and love intact especially after being such a successful business woman. He agreed reluctantly and promised to himself to look after her.

Tuesday

Maan woke up in the morning and told Rishab that he will be taking a detour before coming to the hospital. He then did something he hadn't done in a long time. He went to Sidhi Vinayak Temple and offered puja for Geet's life. He himself didn't know why but he just didn't want to take any chance. He always believed that he did his best and rest was destiny. But today he wanted God by his side. He prayed for Geet's life and well being. He turned before seeing the puja flower which rolled from the deity's hand.

Geet pouted at Rishab with puppy eyes – "Bauji, mujhe ek baar sabki aawaz sunni hai aur dekhna hai. Please aap skype pe call karo na"

Main ro padunga princess. Nahin hoga mujhse. Kaise chupanga sabse itni badi baat

Please bauji, mere liye

Maan squeezed his dad's hand and encouraged him to reign in his emotions. Rishab called Raj with shaky hands

Hello yaar. Ab kaisi tabiyat hai teri. I am really missing you. I need you here. Tu kab aa raha hai.

Rishab feigned a smile – thand rakh yaar. Tu to hukka paani lekar chad gaya hai mujh par (Chill…don't be so aggressive with so many questions). I am still not doing good aur is Maan ne to meri jaan mushkil kar di hai.

Maan- Namaste bade pa. Sorry, even I want to be there but what to do. Dad is still not well. How are you?

Thik hai sab. Bas Geet ki bahut chinta hai. Pata nahin kahan hai. I just pray sab thik ho uske saath.

Sab thik hi hoga, tu chinta mat kar. Nisha, Rahul aur Juhi kahan hai. Naye dulha dulhan se to mila.

Raj called everybody to the laptop. Geet was sitting at an angle where she could see the screen but not in front of the camera.

She saw her brother and bahabi come in front. She could see that smile didn't reach their eyes and they were missing her. She swallowed the lump in her mouth and tried to pacify herself hearing voice of her loved ones.

Maan went to her and hugged her understanding her pain and longing. There was nothing more he wanted in the world at that time than bring the smile back on Geet's face.

After the call, Geet was wheeled to the operation theater and the procedure started. Rishab waited outside anxiously. Maan steeled his heart and concentrated on the task at hand. He was being assisted by head of surgery and head of nursing. He had made a special request for the best possible team for the surgery.

After almost three hours..

Surgery was coming to an end when suddenly her blood pressure started dipping to dangerous levels. Anesthesiologist was trying her best to stabilize Geet but her blood pressure went down to dangerous levels. Maan's heart skipped a beat and his hands started shaking. He closed his eyes in desperation and even he didn't know why but his heart reminded of something. He asked the anesthesiologist to try a non sulphuric based stabilizer. Though this kind of allergy was very rare but this was like a last shot as if something was not done soon blood supply to her organs will stop leading to multiple organ failure. He waited for couple of minutes for the result with his heart in the mouth. What seemed liked an eternity, anesthesiologist nodded as her BP was stabilizing. Everybody released their breath and nurse wiped the sweat which has formed on Maan's forehead.

After another one hour or so…

Maan came out and hugged Rishab. "Surgery was successful but a lot depends on the next two weeks. Only then we can be sure that there is no permanent damage to any of her organs."

Rishab wiped tears form his eyes and hugged his son tight. He has always been proud of his kids but today the respect he felt towards his son was different. He vowed never to crib ever again about his workload because he felt what each and every family feels waiting outside the OR when Maan is inside with their loved ones.
