Chapter 11
"urghh" was the first thing that came out of his mouth. All he knew right now was that his head hurt like hell and as much as he roved his hands all over the bed, he wasn't able to find her on it. With his eyes still closed, and him still frowning, he continued to search for her on the bed. "Nupur", he said in his groggy morning voice. Where in the world are you? Then opening his eyes slowly, the present hit him like a truck on a highway.
Laying on his back and staring up at the ceiling, it all came rushing back to him. There was no Nupur now... and the hardest part was that he had to remind himself about that every day. Every ****ing day.
You would think that two years and three months away from her would have been enough for a "getting over it" phase. But sadly for him, after yesterday, all his tries and efforts throughout these years went down the drain.
It was her 25th birthday yesterday. He remembered how she'd teased him when he'd turned 25. You're just five years away from hitting thirty!! She'd said. You're not too far from hitting thirty either, babe, he'd said. I'm going to get even sexier when I'm thirty...she said tracing his jaw with her finger...just so you know...Oh I know...he growled capturing her lips and making wild and passionate love to her.
He still remembered that night vaguely. It wasn't just sex for him. It was so much more than that. There were feelings involved that just couldn't be described. There were silent promises involved that were left unfulfilled. But more than anything, there was love. It was love that made the four years possible for them.
He had started blaming her for whatever happened. It was the only way out. Or at least he thought it was. He blamed her for having a bad attitude towards life. He blamed her for comparing what they had to her parents' failed relationship. He blamed her for making him miss her so bad. He blamed her for taking away his baby from him. He blamed her for everything. Because by blaming her, he figured that he wouldn't be running after her anymore. He figured that if he became bitter enough towards her, he would be able to stop doing the one thing that he cursed himself for. He thought this would make him hard enough to not feel... to not remember her tears, her face the night she left him. But even so, he was unsuccessful. Even after two years, his heart cried out to her. His eyes had lost the life in them. He'd lost her. He had lost the only woman he ever loved. And the worst part was, he couldn't stop.
Getting himself up and shutting his emotional side of the brain, he got ready for work. He had moved into a different house now. The previous one had too many memories. So picking himself up he got ready to do the one thing that the corporate world had trained him to do- make bucks.

"Dude, mom! You have seriously got to stop with this emotional drama. I cannot take it anymore!" exclaimed Samrat extremely frustrated by his mom's constant pestering. "Beta, you're twenty-nine years old and you haven't even found a bahu for me yet! So my dreams of playing with my grand children have gone down the drain now, haven't they beta?" said Shilpa, his mom, with a voice of disappointment. "Why don't you just marry that last girlfriend you had... what's her name... Fiona? I don't even mind having an English bahu! Just as long as I get to play with my grand kids", she said to her son who looked helplessly at Mayank who was busy trying to hold in his laughter while having dinner with his family. He wouldn't call it a second home because this was like the real home he never had.
Instead of helping Samrat, he decided to play along with his mother with a devilish grin on his face and when Samrat saw this face he knew it was going to be a long night... after all, his mom and his best friend were teaming up against him. Brute!
"Maasi", said Mayank as this was how he was used to addressing her, "I think you're totally right. Samrat! Shame on you!" he said giving him a disapproving look.
"Oh hello Mister!" said Shilpa to Mayank getting a hold of his ear. "Tum bhi kam nahi ho haan!" she said as Mayank tried his best not to yelp in pain. "Maasi, not fair! Don't change the topic. We were talking about Samrat!" "Tum dono naalayak ho! Kisi kaam ke nahi ho! Main aise hee budhi ho jaungi! And you both are going to remain good for nothing!" she said slapping both their heads. "Mainey socha tha, ke this samrat will never get serious, but at least Mayank tum toh Nupur ko..." and then she stopped seeing Samrat's eyes go wide and then realizing what she said she looked at Mayank only to find him gone pale at the mention of her name
"Maasi, jaaney do na please... chalo, i'll get ice-cream for everyone. Samrat, kaunsa flavour chahiye tujhey? There is this new ice-cream place that opened up a few... guys! Stop looking at me like that please, its freaking me out!" he said trying to lighten up the atmosphere. "Okay, let me come with you", said Samrat getting up. "Yeah, fine...whatever.." said Mayank walking out the door while Shilpa looked extremely apologetic. Giving his Mom the "look" Samrat walked out to catch up with Mayank.

After three cigarettes and one hell of a dessert, Mayank was just getting ready to go back to his place when Shilpa stopped him at the door. "Mayu", which was another unintentional Nupur reminder, "Beta, look, I'm sorry for what I said...—" "Oh come on Maasi! Don't make me feel like a jerk and apologise. Its fine!" he said lightly patting her cheek. "I'm fine", he said trying to give her a reassuring smile.
"You're very strong, my bacha", she said rubbing his bearded cheek while he tried his best not to break down.
********************
"Mom has finally completely lost it!" said Samrat to Mayank almost a year later as they sat at their favourite restaurant for dinner one Friday night. "Ab kyun burayi kar raha hai maasi ki?" asked Mayank with disapproval clearly visible in his voice. "Yaar mainey toh mazaak-mazaak mein bol diya tha last week ki theek hai find someone for me. Turns out she took me seriously, dude. Koi chachi ki friend ke neighbour ki beti hai or something like that ...Mehek.. aur woh bhi all the way in India! And now my dear mother is forcing me to go see her! Ab tu hee bata main kya karu?!" he said feeling extremely helpless.
"Mayank! Stop laughing yaar. I'm serious!" he said punching his arm playfully. "Okay, okay, fine!" said Mayank giving up, "Just go and see her once! Kya pata things work out for you guys?" he said with a glimmer of hope in his voice.
***************
"Mayank! I think I'm in love", said Samrat on the phone almost two months later. "Oh! Wow... that's... that's great!" said Mayank quite surprised by the sudden shock he was given. "I know, man! Its amazing! I've not felt like this since school, man. This is the real deal!" he said expressing just how elated he was. "I'm happy for you, Sam... You deserve it..." said Mayank thinking about her all of a sudden. Thinking about how she used to make him feel. "I miss you, bro... tu bhi aaja na yaha", said Samrat sensing his voice turn soft on the other end. "Ab mein India aakar kya karunga? I've got to work, man... you know how busy I am these days.." he said lying flat on his bed and stretching. "Mayank! This is not done, man... you know, mom is also missing you a lot.. aaja na, yaar" "Come on Sam... forget about me! So tell me... how is it going with your lady? I told you na... things might just work out with this Mehek girl... and see I was right", he teased him on the phone.
"Uhmm... a little update Mayank... the girl I'm in love with... not Mehek", he said softly chuckling. "Then who is it?" asked Mayank surprised. "Her name is Gunjan.." "You bas****! And you're telling me now?!" he said sounding mad. "Yaar... it's a long story... we met and things just clicked...and well... rest is history", he said, "We're getting married, Mayank..." he added softly. "Oh wow.. itni jaldi?" asked Mayank taken aback. "Jaldi? Mom ke liye toh I'm the slowest guy on earth in this department. Mom aur Nupur ne toh..." he then stopped as he sensed Mayank choke on air on the other end.
"Nupur?" he whispered on the phone. It seemed like it had been a decade since he had uttered that name out of his mouth... a century since he had moved his lips in her name... a lifetime since he had felt his stomach flip back and forth in excitement as he got news about her... his curious heart wondering how she was.. did she think about him ever... and other thoughts of such sort pooled his heart with warmth and a painful yearning.. "Yeah... uhmm.. you didn't know? Nupur moved to India a couple years ago.. in fact mein Gunjan se bhi usi ki waja se mila tha...", said Samrat casually...as if it were the most obvious thing on planet earth.
"No, Samrat... As a matter of fact, I didn't know... and worse of all you didn't even care to tell me that you're hanging out with her", he said with the warm feeling in his voice turning into a bitter-cold thorny voice. "Mayank, calm down... look I just didn't want to talk to you about her because I knew that you would act like this... and look I was right.. You still love her Mayank.. face it" "I do not love her", spat out Mayank... his eyes burning red with unshed tears.. "She is one heartless woman.. and I would really appreciate it if we shut this topic off right now" he said.. all of a sudden angry at him.. angry at himself for still being so emotionally affected by just talking about her.
"Alright, fine! I wont talk about her!" said Samrat trying to pacify him. "But you have to come to my wedding... I wont go through it if you don't", said Samrat giving him an ultimatum. "You don't have to give fake importance to me Samrat..." sneered Mayank on the phone.." You don't care to tell me anything until after everything happens.. so whatever", he said sounding upset. Quite hurt by his words Samrat replied, "There are many people who care about you Mayank... You just fail to notice it..." Taken aback by his words, Mayank tried to change the topic, "So when is the wedding?" "Its next month Mayank...and Nupur is going to be here too... and if I don't see you here in the next two weeks just because you want to avoid her.. then I'll...I'll", he fumbled... "Then mom is going to kill you!" he said finally finding a rescue boat in the name of "mom".
"Alright fine...I'll be there.. I wouldn't miss your wedding for the world, you know?" he said sounding really emotional all of a sudden. "I know", said Samrat grinning.
******
I mean you don't have to talk to her! Mayank was talking to himself while packing his suitcase. I know she is going to be there.. i am well prepared.. and it has been three years now... just let go of the past..Samrat is getting married! You cannot ruin it for him just because she is going to be there... I can do this! He said in a very determined voice.
