Chapter Three
(Why should I care?)

Geet sighed and walked over to every ward checking on them and she didn't notice the time in talking to the new interns and as well evaluating them. It was lunchtime and she saw the interns coming out of their wards and heading towards the hospital cafeteria. She saw Maan coming out of the ward on the far side and she walked towards the cafeteria.

She entered and as soon as she entered she heard little whispers like, " She is so pretty.. I love her style..." She ignored it and she smiled at everyone. She went to the little cafeteria and saw Maan sitting alone. She ordered her food and after awhile she took it and headed towards Maan's table where he was with a laptop.

She sat on the seat opposite of him and said, " Hi again Dr. Maan". Maan looked up at her again... she was smiling like the sun... " Hi Dr. Geet... how did you enjoy your first three hours?" Geet nodded, " It was very good... fantastic progress... it was very good". Maan nodded... He didn't care. As long as the patients were getting proper care through his hospital and there were no complaints against his interns. He was fine. " That's good" said Maan as he sipped on his coffee. Geet ate her food without a word and finally said after finishing, " So where are you from Dr. Maan? and your family?". "Why do you want to know" said Maan with one eyebrow up. Geet was caught off guard but she smiled, " I don't know... everyone is bound to belong from somewhere... I figured you would be too!". Her voice was so sweet... it was almost like a song to his ears. Go figure. her name was Geet.. which meant song.

" Well.. I have a dadimaa at home and that is pretty much it.." said Maan. " Oh" said Geet. Maan didn't say a word but he expected her to.. since she sounded like a total chatterbox. " Well my family is from Hoshiyarpur, Punjab.. I have a daarji and my papa jii..." said Geet. " Your mother?" said Maan. Why did I ask that? Why do I suddenly care? Geet's smile vanished, " My mom died when I was five years old... she died from a heart attack". Maan looked up at her... her smiling face all of a sudden disappeared into a dark and upset one. " I didn't mean to-" began Maan. Geet smiled again, " Oh no its okay... I just miss her.. but you know what? That's why I became a doctor.. and because I want to do something that will make one want to smile... saving a life is worth the toil.."

Maan just listened to her... his sullen expression was still serious as ever. " Is life even worth smiling for?" said Maan. " Of course it is Dr. Maan! haso jeeo.. muskurao.. kya pata.. kal ho na ho?" " Is that from a movie?" said Maan with a bored expression. Geet laughed, " you got me Dr. Maan... but anyway.. of course you should smile alongside life.. it makes your day ever brighter... you should try it Dr. Maan" said Geet as she collected her tray and got up. She threw her food away and put the tray on top of the garbage can. She turned around and smiled, " See you later Dr. Maan."

Maan just stared in her direction. He watched her go in the most graceful manner... and he thought to himself, " Yeh kis jahaan se aayi hai?" He shrugged it off and continued to look at his laptop. But for some reason... the thing that Geet said to him was stuck in his mind... " Haso jeeo.. muskurao..? how can she smile... she has sorrows of her own.. her mother.. and God knows what else" thought Maan, Maan sighed and he went to work on his laptop.

Geet walked through the hallways and she looked around to see if anyone was there. She went in the senior doctor's locker room and she opened up her locker and she took out a bag. She looked around once more and she opened it. She took out a little blood glucose monitor She sat down on the benches... she pierced herself with the piercer and it pinched her a little. Her finger took out a little bit of blood and she put it on the thin strip and then she inserted the thin strip into the machine and she sighed.. she cleaned her finger up and she saw the numbers go up and .. Her eyes went a little wide, " Oh no... that is not good". She sighed got up and put the machine in her locker.

Just then, Maan entered the lockeroom and Geet was startled a little and her monitor fell on the ground. Maan saw her getting startled and he said, " Everything okay Dr. Geet?" Maan saw the tiny monitor a little bit but he couldn't tell what it was for and Geet quickly picked it up and put it softly in her locker. She turned around and smiled, "Yes.. everything is fine.." For some reason, she looked like she was hiding something but he couldn't quite figure out what from her expressions. Maan looked at her intently and walked upto her and crossed his arms, " Okay but why are you shaking..." Geet looked at her hands that were shaking and she said, " Oh.. I think I just got surprised really well by you". She covered it up so nicely. Maan looked at her with questioning eyes but she shrugged it off, " Nothing Dr. Maan.. thankyou for your concern... I'll take your leave."

Geet shut her locker and she gathered her stethoscope and she was about to when her duppata caught onto Maan's shirt. She felt something tug at her neck and she stopped. Maan stood there a little frozen. She turned around and saw that her duppata was caught on Maan's button. She walked over and she was a little hesitant to come this close to her co senior doctor. Maan watched as their bodies were inches away and she softly twisted her duppata off of his shirt without even tugging at it. He looked at her face... beautiful... angelic.. and bubbly.. like her nature. " Sorry" said Geet as she fixed her duppata and she exited the room. He heard her lightly walk out of the room in her tiny heels.
