Grand Finale - Part2
Pia turned to the right sharply. For the first few seconds, she thought she was hallucinating. But, no, he was there. Abhay was standing there with a lantern, tall and simmering, like a predator ready to jump.
The problem was that he was too far away. And Maya was too fast. In the same moment it took Pia to make her brain believe her eyes, Maya jumped and she was behind Pia, her hands around her throat. ''Stay where you are or I will break her little neck.''
Abhay put the lantern down and raised his hands. ''I am staying.''
''Tell whoever you have got in that tunnel to go back. All the way back. If I see another person, I will kill her.''
Abhay's jaw tightened. ''Go back to the entrance. All of you.'' He shouted without turning. His eyes moved to Pia. ''Are you all right?''
Pia couldn't nod. Maya was holding her tightly. ''Yes.'' She could only whisper.
She met his gaze, and she knew that all her fears about him not wanting her anymore were pointless. He loved her. He understood her. They didn't even need any words. For the first time since she had been Maithali, she trusted Abhay unreasonably. She didn't want this to end with a death.
''It's over now.'' Abhay looked at Maya. ''You have to realize that. I have got twenty people down here, and another twenty on the surface, waiting.'' He spoke softly. ''But I give you my word, you can walk out of here alive right now, nobody will touch you. All you have to do is let Pia go.''
''Together.'' Pia interrupted. ''We go together, Abhay.''
Abhay nodded and looked at Maya. ''Just let her go.''
Maya laughed. ''But that way, I won't win.''
''You can't win, anyway.'' Abhay answered quietly. ''Even if you kill her, she'll still be alive-''
''Not if I make her a vampire first.''
Abhay shook his head. ''It doesn't matter. Even if you kill her, she'll still be alive-here'' He tapped the left side of his chest. ''In me. I keep her here. She is a part of me. Until you kill me, you can't really kill her. And you can't win. It is that simple.''
Silence. Pia's heart twisted, and her eyes were full.
''I could kill you both.''
Abhay shrugged. ''But how can you win when the people you hate are not there to see it?''
It sounded insane-but it was true. If Maya couldn't have Abhay as her prize, if she couldn't make him suffer, what was the point? Where was the victory?
''Let's stop the cycle right here.'' Abhay said softly. ''Let her go.'' He sounded so gentle, and so reasonable, and so tired ' Pia had no idea how anyone could resist him. But what happened next surprised her, too.
Slowly, the hands around her neck loosened, and Maya stepped away.
--
They walked together to the front door. When they were outside, Raj shut the door behind them. ''You can still come with me, you know?''
''With you and Shankar?''
''I will send him away. Or I will go and come back tomorrow and get you. Or I will come back and stay..''
''You need to go tell your father about this. So that Rhea can be safe. You know that.''
''Well, I will come back after that.'' Raj said, he sounded desperate.
Misha looked away. The sun had settled down. The sky was almost black. ''I am not ready yet. I wish I was.''
''No you don't.'' Raj said, and he was right, ofcourse. She'd known ever since she sat there by the road, staring at the car in flames and the dead wolf inside it. And she'd thought and thought about it, but she couldn't change her own mind. She would never be a vampire. She couldn't do the things the vampires did. She wasn't like Rhea or Panchi. She'd looked at the killing, at the destruction..and she couldn't be a part of it. ''I don't want you to be like that. I want you to be like you.''
Misha still wasn't looking at him. ''But we are not Kabir and Rhea. We can't just hold hands and laugh and never think about what's gonna happen next..''
''No, we are only soulmates, that's all. We're only destined to be together, forever.''
''If we've got forever, than you can give me time. Go back and make sure you want to give your supernatural world up-''
''I know that already.''
''Take a look at humans and make sure you want to be with one of them.''
''And think about the things I have done to humans, maybe?''
Misha held his gaze. ''Yes.''
He looked away this time. ''All right, I admit it. I've got a lot to make up for..''
''Then make up for what you can.'' She said. ''And give me time to finish growing up. I am still in college, Raj.''
''You will be 18 in a year. You will be grown up. I will come back then.''
''It may be too soon.''
''I know. I will come back anyway.'' He smiled. ''And in the meantime, I will fight dragons, just like any knight would. I will prove myself. You will be proud of me-''
Misha interrupted and kissed him.
--
Pia took a deep breath. She wanted to run to Abhay, but her knees shook.
Maya moved, facing Abhay, taking a step towards him. ''I loved you.'' She sounded pleading, and delicate, and hurt.. Pia had never heard Maya like that before. ''Why didn't you ever understand that?''
Abhay shook his head. ''Because it's not true. You never loved me. You wanted me because you couldn't have me.''
There was a silence as they both looked at each other. Not because they understood each other for any words, but because they didn't understand each other. They had nothing to say.
Maya collapsed.
She didn't fall down. But Pia saw the life go out of her ' the hope. The energy that kept Maya sparkling and bright after thousands of years. It all came from her need to win..and now she'd lost.
''Come on, Pia.'' Abhay looked at her. ''Let's go.'' He shouted back in the tunnel. ''Clear the way. We are all coming out.''
Maya was sitting, her head down, her eyes on her backpack.
And when Abhay turned away, she fixed a glance at him and grabbed the black stake. Pia recognized the posture immediately. As Maithali, she had seen hunters throwing spears all the time.
''Game over.'' Maya whispered.
Pia didn't even have a second to react, no time to think. She lunged at Maya, her wooden weapon in her hand. The sharp point went in just under Maya's shoulder. She staggered, her throw ruined, her stake hit the walls, and Maya fell.
There was blood seeping out of Maya's back. The stake had gone in very deep, piercing vampire flesh. Abhay stood next to her, kneeling, pulling Pia away from Maya.
Pia reached for him, and their hands met, intertwined. Pia held on tight, feeling warmth and comfort from his presence.
Maya's skin was chalky white, and her eyes were wide open. She was laughing. She looked at Pia. ''You had guts-after all.''
''Can we do anything for her?'' Pia whispered.
Abhay shook his head.
Maya's laugh turned in a gurgle, blood ran down her mouth. She jerked, and went still. She was dead.
''The cycle is broken.'' Abhay said softly.
Pia swallowed and closed her eyes.
Abhay turned towards her, holding her. ''Are you all right?'' He looked at Maya, and then back at her.
''I am not proud of it. I am not sorry, either. It had to be done.'' She said slowly. ''I refuse to be a victim anymore.''
Abhay tightened his arm around her. ''I am proud of you.'' He added. ''Let's go. We need to get you to a healer.''
--
Raj broke the kiss and took a step back. ''I wish I was a human.''
''No, you don't.'' Misha smiled faintly.
''I do.''
But it wouldn't help, and she knew that he knew it. The problem wasn't what he was, but what he'd done. He'd seen too much of the dark side to be a normal person. He couldn't fight his dark nature.
''Believe in me.'' He said, as if he could hear her.
Misha couldn't say yes or no. She did the only thing she could do ' she lifted her head and kissed him again. The electric sparks weren't painful anymore. When she'd kissed him earlier, he had backed off, but he held on to her this time, tighter and tighter with every passing second. He kissed her like there was no tomorrow, like he could express whatever he felt in this one kiss.
Behind them, somebody opened the door. Misha and Raj jumped and separated. She laughed. ''Come out.''
Kabir and Rhea came out. Panchi was behind them. She turned to Raj again. ''Goodbye.''
He looked at her for one long moment, and turned to look at the road. Misha watched him go, blinking back tears. She couldn't let herself believe in him. But there was no harm in hoping. In wishing. Even if wishes never come true.
Rhea gasped. ''Look.''
They all saw it. A wishing star. It was right above Raj's path, as if lighting his way. Raj turned around and winked at her. ''See you next year.''
Everyone shouted goodbyes but his gaze was fixed on her. ''Even when we're apart, we will be looking at the same sky.''
''What a line.'' Misha rolled her eyes. But he was right. The sky would be there for both of them. She'd always know he was out there, looking at it. He left, and Misha watched..continued watching for a long time.
--
''How did you find me?'' Pia asked. They were at Abhay's house, in the bedroom with golden walls. The sky outside had turned black.
''One of Maya's people sold the information. He got in Mumbai on the same time when I did. A werewolf who wasn't too happy with the way she treated him.''
It was so good to rest, to feel herself relax. It was so good to be alive. To be with Abhay. He sat next to her on the bed, holding her hand, watching her as if he couldn't believe she was real. They sat together quietly, not needing words. He moved and his lips brushed her forehead. She leaned down, her head resting on his chest.
It was over. The apocalypse had come, and now it was over.
Abhay moved his hand in her hair. ''You know, you came very close to becoming a vampire. You are going to be sick for a few days while your body shifts back to human.''
Pia nodded without pulling away to look at him.
''And you still have a choice.''
Silence. ''What do you mean?''
He took a deep breath. ''I mean, you can still choose to be a vampire. You're right on the edge. If you want, we can make you change over.''
She hadn't thought about this, she'd be immortal, she could stay with Abhay forever, she'd be stronger, faster, telepathic.
She met his gaze. ''Is that what you want? For me to become a vampire?''
''I want what you want. Nothing else matters.''
''Then.'' She said very softly. ''I will stay human. I don't mind the birthmark. It's a part of me. If I become a vampire, it will fade away. It brings up memories of me and you. I don't want it to fade out.''
She could see tears in his eyes.
She could see the corridor of time, again. This time, she was looking forward. She would work for Circle Unity with Abhay. They would be happy together. The sadness would go out of his eyes. Pia would grow up and get older. Abhay would love her just the same. And then, one day, she will die. Abhay will wait for her. They'd start all over again.
One lifetime with him was enough, but Pia knew there would be many.
''I love you.'' She whispered.
He gently lifted her head and kissed her. ''I love you too.'' He murmured through the kiss.
