DIL DOORMAT 27.9
Abhay slept through the battle where Mrinalini drove Maya and her son Saxena out from the tribe and away from the witches. He slept through the origins of the supernatural world and thousands of human years. When he finally woke up, the world was a different place, with civilizations and cities. And he knew that somewhere Maithali had been born in one of them.
He began to look.
He had no home, no place to go, no idea where to start with. He learned how to take blood without killing, to find willing donors. He wasn't a killer anymore.
He looked in every village and city he passed, learning about the new world. He met many people who liked him, this tall young man with dusty clothes and a faraway look in his eyes, but he only stayed long enough to make sure Maithali wasn't there.
When he did find her, it was in Egypt. Her name was Mah-Nakht. She was tall, fair and beautiful, just like he remembered. Except one thing. Across her neck, where his fingers had smeared his own blood, there was a mark like a red bruise. Like a permanent reminder of what happened. And it was his fault.
Abhay was overcome with grief and shame. He saw that the other girl, the girl he hadn't killed in the village, the girl he had seen after he had killed Maithali, who was with her in her last life, was here this time too. She had friends. Maybe it was best to leave her alone in this life, not to speak to her.
But he had forgotten about Maya.
Vampires don't die.
Just as Abhay was thinking this, a figure walked into his house. For a moment, he was simply confused. Every muscle in his body tensed violently. It was Maya.
He hadn't seen her in over a thousand years. The last time was in Australia, where Maya had just killed her.
Abhay stood up.
She was as beautiful as ever, but it didn't matter to Abhay. He hated her more than he thought he could hate anyone.
''So you found me.'' He said faintly. ''I knew you would show up eventually.''
Maya smiled brilliantly. ''I found her first.''
Abhay went still. He felt a violent wrench inside him, as if something was trying to get out, to get to Pia right now.
How could he have been so stupid? She hated him, she obviously removed the ring.
His voice was a bare whisper. ''What did you do to her?''
''Oh, not much. Mostly it was just conversation. I told her how you would be rough on her if things don't go your way.'' Maya looked at him, watching his reaction.
He kept a straight face. She hadn't changed in thousands of years. She never gave up, never grew tired. Sometimes he thought that he should just tie himself to her at the waist and jump off a cliff. Rid the world off it's two oldest vampires.
But there was his promise to Maithali.
''It doesn't matter what you say to her.'' He shrugged. ''You don't understand, Maya. This time is different. She remembers everything and-''
''And she hates you. I know. Poor baby.'' Her eyes glittered.
Abhay gritted his teeth. ''And I have come to a decision.'' He went on. ''The cycle has to be broken, and there is a way to do it.''
''I know.'' Maya smiled. ''You can give up on her. Give in to me.''
''Yes.'' Her eyes went wide, and Abhay managed a smirk. ''Yes to the first part.'' He finished. ''I'm giving her up.''
''You are not. You can not.''
''She's happy in this life, and she doesn't want me. She remembers everything, I don't know how, but she does. She doesn't want me anymore.''
Maya was watching him, fascinated, her eyes turning violet, her lips parted. Suddenly, she looked away and smiled. ''She remembers everything? You really think so?''
Abhay nodded. ''All I have ever brought her is misery and pain. I guess she realizes that.'' He sighed. ''So, I am ending the cycle now.''
''You are going to walk away.''
''And so are you.'' He held her gaze. ''She is no threat to you anymore. If you want something from me, the only person to deal with is me. You can try it anytime you like in Mumbai.''
Maya threw back her head and laughed. ''Why didn't you tell me before? You could have saved me one trouble..but on the other hand, her blood was very sweet. I wouldn't have missed-''
She broke off as Abhay pinned her to the wall. ''What did you do to her?'' He yelled.
Maya just smiled at him. She was the oldest vampire, the most powerful. ''I'm afraid you were the one who attacked her. She seemed very unhappy about it, she even stabbed you with a pencil.'' Maya lifted a hand and Abhay saw a neat hole faintly ringed with blood.
''The power of illusion.'' He muttered. Maya could appear as anyone and anything she wanted. She had talents that usually only belonged to werewolves and shape-shifters. And ofcourse she was a witch.
''It's alright. You didn't exchange as much blood as you wanted. The pencil, see.'' Maya went on.
''Listen to me.'' He looked her in the eye which was shining golden now. ''If you touch Pia again, ever, in any life, I'll kill you. Believe me, Maya, I can do it.''
He let her go. He had to get to Pia. Even a small exchange of blood with a vampire could be dangerous.. and Maya's blood was the worse. He had already taken some of her blood last night. She could be weak now..or starting to change.
''You won't, you know.'' Maya's voice followed him. ''You won't kill me. Not Abhay the good vampire, not Abhay the compassionate vampire. You're not capable of it. You can't kill.''
He stopped and held her gaze. ''Try me.''
Then he was outside, moving quickly through the evening air. ''And ofcourse there's your promise to Maithali.'' She shouted.
Pia stirred.
She vaguely felt that something was wrong, something was terribly wrong. Then she realized that she was walking down a long dark road.
Her eyes flew open.
The night was very quiet. She looked around and found that she could see the lights from the houses on the extreme right side, behind this road and the trees.
She needed to get to Misha. She was the only one who could understand her, help her..
Rhea had said that Misha had a vampire soulmate, a bad vampire soulmate. Oh, how much she needed help right now. She wouldn't go to Rhea, no. She worked for Abhay.
She tried to concentrate on our body, to see how she felt. She should feel terrible, after all. She had lost blood and swallowed what kind of poison from Abhay's body.
But, instead, she only felt dizzy.
She could walk, she was fine.
She could hardly feel the rough ground under her feet. Her whole body was swaying. She had taken another five steps forward when she heard a wolf howl.
It was such a distinctive sound, so close. Pia stopped in her tracks. It was a wolf, just like the wolfs that had attacked her at Paul's house. And she didn't have anything made of silver.
Just keep walking, she told herself.
The howl sounded again, so close that Pia jumped. Her eyes darted, trying to pick objects in the darkness. She felt as if she could see better than usual, could the vampire blood have done that? But she couldn't see anything moving. The world around her was eerily quiet.
She heard a breath drawn behind her.
Funny. The wolfs howl so loud, and this was so soft..it was terrifying. It was so close. She was definitely not alone.
She turned around to see a tall figure standing there.
Abhay.
''What's the matter? Came back for more?'' Her voice was steady and brave.
''Are you all right?'' He asked.
He looked different from the last time she had seen him. His expression was different. His dark eyes were pensive again. Infinitely sad.
''Why should you care?'' She put some weight on her knees to stand her ground. He was stepping towards her, hand reaching out.
''I do care. I don't expect you to believe it, though.''
Pia laughed. The drowsiness was having an odd effect on her. ''Are you crazy?'' She said, there were tears in her eyes. ''Do you think that you can attack me and then come back and apologise and it's all going to be okay? Well, it isn't. Whatever there was between us, it's all over now. There is no second chance.''
His face was tensed. A muscle twitched in his jaw, and Pia gasped when she saw that there were tears in his eyes, too.
''I hate you.'' She spat the words out. ''How dare you pretend to be hurt after what you'd done? I don't need you. I don't want you. And I am telling you for the third time, keep the hell away from me.''
He had opened his mouth to say something, but then he shut it, and looked away. ''And maybe that's the best.'' He whispered.
''For you to keep away?''
''For you to hate me.'' He looked at her again. His eyes were shattered and impossibly distant.
''Pia, I came to tell you that I am going away.'' He went on. His voice was like his eyes, distant. ''I am going home, and I won't bother you again. You are right, you don't need me. You can live a long and a happy life without me.'' He hesitated. ''There's just one thing. Before I go, would you let me look at you? I want to make sure that-'' He paused. ''- I didn't hurt you when I attacked you.''
Pia laughed again. ''How stupid do you think I am? Really? If you want to do something for me, you can turn around and go..forever.''
''I will.'' His voice was strained. ''I promise. I'm just worried about getting you indoors before you faint.''
''I can take care of myself. I don't need any help from you.'' She pressed. She was getting more and more dizzier, but she tried her best not to show it. She knew that she was going to pass out soon.
I better start walking, she thought. ''I'm leaving now.'' She said. ''And I don't want you to follow me.''
She turned and started walking.
I will not faint, she told herself. She tried to take long deep breaths of the cool night air. The ground seemed rubbery now, as if her feet was sinking in it.
Her legs simply melted. She didn't have legs. The rest of her fell slowly toward the ground. She didn't go out completely, she was floating in darkness. She sensed someone behind her.
No, she thought. He will bite you. But she couldn't move. Her hand wouldn't obey her.
She felt a gentle hand brush hair off her face.
A touch on her neck. His fingers running lightly over the skin where she'd been bitten tonight. She heard a sigh that sounded like relief, and the fingers trailed away.
''You will be all right.'' He said softly. ''As long as you stay away from vampires for the next week.''
She felt him touch her again, his fingertips brushing her face. She wanted to move, but she couldn't.
Those delicate fingers were moving, tracing her features one by one. I hate you, I want to hate you, she reminded herself again and again.
Warm lips touched her forehead. The barest touch. Then, they were gone.
''Goodbye, Pia.'' He whispered.
She felt herself being lifted. Strong arms were carrying her, moving swiftly. It was harder for her to stay conscious than it had been before. But she fought to open her eyes just a crack.
She wanted to see his hands. To see if the pencil wound was there.
She managed to lift her heavy eyelids and cast a glance towards his hands. There were no wounds.
She felt her eyes closing again. Dimly, very far away, she felt the realization burning inside her. She could hear the faint voice of a doorbell.
A soft voice in her head. ''Don't worry. I am going away, and so is she.''
''No. I have to talk to you. Don't go away.'' She tried to reach out telepathically, but felt cold air around her. She knew that he was gone.

While the three supernaturals headed for the woods, Misha flopped down on her couch with a pen and a book in her hand. ''Now.'' She said to Kabir. ''We are going to play List The Suspects.''
''There's nothing in our house, you know.'' Kabir groaned. ''My girlfriend is coming here in a while.''
''What can I say? Your girlfriend is undead. Come on, sit down and concentrate.''
Kabir sat down and sighed. ''Who have we got?''
''All right.'' She said grimly. ''Let's assume that the person who broke the wing of the college was the same person who killed Ruhi and the goat and the same person who's using Raj's symbols. Where does that get us?''
''I think it was Shaurya.''
''You are not being helpful.''
''I am serious. You know how weird he is. Living in a house all by himself near the woods.''
Misha sighed. ''Okay, I'll put Shaurya, with a question mark. Who else?''
''You are the smart one, who do you think did it?'' He asked.
''I have no idea.'' She paused. ''Oh my god, T.''
''T did it?'' Kabir snorted.
''Yes, I mean, no, I mean, I don't know.''
''T. I mean, T. come on, she can't kill a mosquito.''
Misha shook her head. ''Panchi sensed something about her. She might be a vampire hunter, or a witch, or a vampire.''
''Put her down, too.'' Kabir shrugged.
Misha did. ''You know, there's something I keep forgetting to ask Rhea about-''
They heard a doorbell.
''They're back.'' Misha threw the book on the table and rushed to open the door. She was greeted by a unconscious Pia.
PRECAP:
''I want to know how I died in my earlier lives.'' Pia said. ''I wanna know about this woman who keeps warning me.''
''Oh, terrific.'' Paul groaned. ''Sounds like fun.''
