Chapter 103: Of Sarees and Salads
He pulled on a strand of her hair and let it go, watching it slide back into its wave. She tilted her head slightly in his direction and he moved the hair that shielded her face so that he could see her profile. She paused in cutting the cucumbers and raised a slice to his mouth. As he bit down on its minty crunchiness, he moved in closer behind her and brought his hands up to the bare waist allowed by her sari as he asked, "Do you remember the last time you did that?"
She shook her head and pretended not to, but he didn't buy it. "Liar" he said in a whisper. "You know exactly what I'm talking about."
She shook her head again just as she felt tingling all over her body, not just at his proximity, but as the memory of what he referred to assailed her.
It had happened sometime just after she had turned twenty. It was one of the first times that she had worn a sari and she had been getting used to the feel of the long cloth wrapped around her and navigating how to walk in it. She had been standing just like this in her kitchen with her mother and Smitha aunty and she'd been cutting cucumbers. Both of them had been coming up behind her frequently to get her to feed them the slices; it's something they had always done when they all cooked together and it had been a running joke that only half the cucumbers ever made it into the actual salad bowl.
Her mother and Smitha aunty had been chattering away and she had felt hypnotized by the humdrum of their daily routine as she stood there enjoying the cool breeze coming in through the window and sneaking up the crevices left exposed by the sari. She hadn't been able to quite put her finger on it, but there had been something else in the air then that had felt different… like something was about to happen… which was absurd really. What was about to happen was a cucumber salad with half the cucumbers missing.
She didn't know when she tuned out the chatter in the background, but still remembered that feeling that had overtaken her suddenly… there had been a prickle of something that had climbed up from her lower back all the way to her neck until the hair at her nape stood up. For some reason, she hadn't looked back, but had instead leaned toward the window to open it wider.
When she returned to place, she had felt him right behind her. With an ease over her body that frightened her, he had moved her hair over to one side of her shoulder and had slid the same hand down to casually hold her at her waist as his other hand made her pick up several slices of cucumber to place them in his mouth. For a split second, she hadn't been able to react as she felt goosebumps pop up all over her body, spreading outwards from each place he touched like dominoes falling. And then, unbidden, a startlingly clear memory of when he had kissed her in the dark two years ago had risen in her mind's eye. She had held her breath to fight the feeling and not give herself away when he had raised her hand to his mouth yet again with another slice of cucumber between them. She had been barely aware of the slice in her hand, so focused was she on everything else, that her fingers loosened and it dropped from her fingers just when it was over her shoulder.
The cool feeling of the slice against her shoulder had startled her and just as she had been about to shake herself out of her momentary paralysis, she had felt his lips on her shoulder as he sucked the piece off of her skin. Without warning, her breast-buds had tightened almost painfully and she had squeezed her eyes shut as she battled the intensity of the sensation.
And before she knew it, she had grabbed the knife that she was cutting the cucumber with and had turned around to raise it against him.
"I will cut off the part of your body that touches me next, Shiv!"
"God, it's you! I thought it was some new hot friend of yours, parading around in a sari. Well, now that explains it."
"Explains what?" she had asked, angrier at his admission that he had thought it was someone else, waving her knife.
"Sari is not your thing, Gauri. I mean, look at you, there are barely any assets there to show off…. Neither in the back, nor in the front. It's like a cloth on a stick. You should really just stick with what suits you best. Manly attire." He smirked then and she raised the knife in her hand.
"Even you wouldn't be stupid enough to make fun of a girl when she has a knife in her hand, Shiv! I mean, I know you don't have two brain cells to rub together. But still."
He was on her before she knew it, backing her against the counter and holding her hand with the knife in it until he squeezed if out of her and it clattered to the floor with a loud clang.
"Don't threaten me when you can't follow through! And don't insult my intelligence when you know I am stronger than you. There are times when the Brawn in indeed mightier than the Brain."
She stepped on his foot and bit down hard on his shoulder simultaneously and he yelped and moved back in pain.
"If that was the case, you would still be hunting with a stick and rubbing stones to make fire, Shiv. But then again, knowing you, hunting wouldn't have really been your thing… too much effort required… no, you would have been more like the resident male wh**e, in charge of populating the tribe. That's your singular accomplishment in life, isn't it?"
"Well, if that's the case Gauri dear, then I can guarantee that you would be the one female in that tribe who wouldn't be "populating". She could tell that she had finally pissed him off because his tone had been angry as he said it before he had stalked off.
"Go figure… you turned out to be the only woman I am interested in "copulating" with." He said now, bringing her out of her reverie.
"I think the word we used was "populating"."
"Hmm… "copulating," "populating"… tomato, toh-mato…" he murmured now, smiling.
"Oh please… after all the insults that you hurled at me?" She reminded him.
"Oh come on! I was so turned on that I didn't know what to do with myself. And then you turned on me with a knife!"
"Shiv, you had your hands on my waist, you were standing too close, and you licked a piece of cucumber off my shoulder. Can you imagine what that must have felt like for me? Especially knowing how we feel about each other otherwise?"
"Were you aroused?" He whispered now, bringing his hands on her waist in just the way that he had held her all those years ago.
When she didn't respond right away, he nipped her shoulder and ran his tongue over it. "Were you?" he repeated the question.
"Yes, very!" she said in a rush as her head fell back against him.
"I knew it! I am glad you turned on me with a knife then. Because if I thought you felt one-tenth of what I felt in that moment, I would have swooped in and not even given you a chance to resist."
"No you wouldn't have. Our mothers would have walked in at any second." She countered.
"Your house has many nooks and crannies. I would have found a way to pull you into one of them so that I could slide that sari off of your incredibly lovely body and touched and kissed and licked my way through…."
"Shiv…" she called out in a husky voice before she turned around to cover his mouth.
"But I can do that now…" he said, pulling down her hand and picking her up in his arms to carry her off to the laundry room.
