Chapter 87: An Interlude

When he climbed up to her room late that afternoon, she did not come to the window like she usually did. He found her curled up in bed instead, clutching her stomach.

"What's wrong, Lia?" He took off his shoes to climb into bed behind her.

She moaned in pain even as she moved back against him, allowing him to spoon her.

"Your stomach hurts?"

She nodded with effort.

"I'll take you to the doctor."

She shook her head and snuggled closer to him.

"I'm taking you to the doctor!" He made to rise, but she turned to hold him back.

"It's nothing like that." She said in a whisper just before she doubled over in pain.

"That doesn't seem like nothing! Thalia, if I have to carry you out of here, I will. Don't be stubborn."

She turned back around once her face eased from the pain. "It's… it's that time."

"What time?..." he started just before it struck him. "Oh…"

Her hands that were clutching her stomach pressed tighter now as he saw another spasm of pain engulf her.

"Don't they have medicine for this? This doesn't look normal, baby…"

She shook her head again.

"There is no medicine?"

This time she nodded.

"What is it called?"

"Midol" she whispered.

"Alright. I will go get some." Just as he was about to rise from bed again, she took a hold of his arm and shook her head.

"Tee, please don't tell me you're philosophically opposed to taking medication for the time of the month!"

"For anything." Her voice was so low that he had to lean in to hear.

"For anything?"

"Shaan. I cut my wrists rather than do something easier like take pills to kill myself! I hate taking pills. I have ever since Talin died…"

He hadn't known that. Talin had been ill and in and out of hospitals for a whole year before he had died just before Thalia's fourteenth birthday. Talin's death had changed everything and everyone, but none more than Thalia. While her parents coped with their son's death by withdrawing mentally and emotionally from everything, including their daughter, Thalia had spiraled into a depression that was only broken by unpredictable periods of explosive acting out. Which really only made her parents distance themselves from her even more…

Even he had only noticed the more obvious changes in her before, but now he was sure there were a million little things, like her aversion to taking pills, that he had missed in the aftermath of Talin's death.

"What do you usually do to deal with the pain?" He asked softly as he lay back down next to her and hugged her close to him once again.

"Shut myself away in here for a week until it's over."

He kissed her forehead and held her as she felt her body clench from the next bout of pain that came through.

She stood in front of the mirror as she raised the pallu of her sari to pull it over her shoulder, but then paused. Without warning, the memory from earlier that afternoon when Shiv had pulled her behind the column in the blue room seized her. The pallu dropped from her hand as she turned from side to side to look at her body in the mirror. He had noticed… She caught herself smiling like a fool and called herself a silly twit for looking at herself in the mirror while only partially dressed. The ring of her phone startled her out of her reverie and she picked it up in surprise when she noticed Shashank's number.

"Gauri, I have a really weird question to ask you." He said without preamble when she said hello.

"Alright… let's hear how weird it is." She smiled into the phone as she told him.

"Do you have Midol?"

"Okay, yes, that is weird." She laughed out loud now.

"Oh don't tease, yaar. It's hard enough to ask."

"Why do you need Midol? Because you do realize that it's not for the male of the species. In fact, it's really just meant for the fairer sex."

"It is for the fairer sex in this case too."

"Ah… I see.... Yes, I do have some."

"Um… do you mind if I.. um…"

"Borrowed some?" She finished, taking pity on him.

"Yes please…"

She smiled at his entreaty. She did miss him so. And she was happier than she could say in words that he loved Thalia as much as he evidently did. Because the girl was obviously crazy about him.

"Sure thing. Do you want to swing by and get it? Call me when you get here. It's Rathan and his fiancee's Sangeet tonight, so the house is sort of crazy. I will come out to meet you. Is that okay?"

"Thanks Gauri…" he said then before she heard him pause and take a deep breath.

"How are you?" He finally asked.

"I am pregnant." She said suddenly with no preface.

"I know… Thalia told me. I am sorry I didn't call earlier. I just didn't want there to be any… misunderstanding… between you and Shiv. Especially with everything that my misguided vixen has put you both through..."

"I know…"

"I figured you did…"

"We were always good like that. Being able to figure each other out…" she smiled as she said now.

"I'm glad that you're happy Gauri. Really glad."

"And I'm glad that you went to get her in Goa, Shashank."

There was now a pause at his end of the line. After several moments, he simply said, "I'll call you when I get there."

Thalia's condition is like mine....My first two days are spent caved in with my best friend of the week....my hot water bottle😆

Uh-Oh! Shiv's going to misunderstand Gauri again? I hope this leads to a big confrontation b/w SG and finally they confess. Shiv needs to know what Gauri feels for him.

Once again, a great update Devi. I was missing Thalia & Shashank. They are so good together. I love the nick names they've given each other - Shaan & Lia. It's so sweet of Shashank to call up Gauri for Midol. It shows that they were always just friends and not in love with each other.

P.S Every time i see that you've updated I think i'll be ok if i read one more, but no. It leaves me craving for more. Thanks for updating frequently.
