I think a lot of us do that. We always read in to things more than we should but I guess if I was in the same situation as the girl in your story then I'd do the same. I'd act like everything was normal, as if I wasn't feeling anything for him but I'd also want to know if he felt the same way I did and although the idea of being with this guy sounds good, I wouldn't want to risk losing a good friend in the process.

Sorry for going on..I guess it just got me thinking about certain things.
