Chapter 49: Grapes and Pomegranates

He held her up close to him as she unraveled her legs from around him. There was a vulnerability now in her eyes that he hadn't seen before and it made him kiss her softly, lingering much longer than any of the kisses that came before. When they pulled apart, she looked away quickly and walked towards the door. He didn't follow her immediately, but she paused by the doorway to look back at him and he felt that feeling again that had come over him at Sarala aunty's house when she had searched for him and found him in the crowd… And so he could do naught but follow her now as she gave him that look and walked back into the house, her feet bare, her hair floating down to her waist, her skin glowing even in the dark… She looked just what she was in that moment, a well-loved woman…

Her gait was slow as she made her way down the long hallway to their bedroom, but he kept the same pace, walking a distance behind her. When she reached their bedroom door, she looked back at him again before she opened it, only to close it behind her once she was inside. He smiled and took his time reaching the door. By the time he walked in and softly closed the door behind him, she was already in bed with the covers over her. He walked up to the bed and slowly pulled off the spread that shielded her from him. She let go without resistance and raised her arms above her as the sheet slid off.

He gave a low whistle and shook his head. Any man would if they saw his wife in all her nude glory.

"I like that nightgown. And given that you didn't rip it off of me before, I am determined to save it…" she said in a husky voice.

"Why? So you can save it as a memento of when your husband lost control and took you against the wall on the balcony in the wee hours of the morning while the rest of the world slept?"

She sucked her lower lip in between her teeth as she grabbed the sheet back to cover herself and turned away from him. He got in bed behind her and pulled her close to him.

"Do you know that I read all of Song of Songs?" he whispered.

Her eyes closed on a sigh as he ran his hands up her hips, stroking her waist.

"Do you know that most of it is quite scandalous?"

She didn't respond, but he could hear her hold her breath as she waited for him to continue.

"Especially chapter 7?" he added now and she turned her face towards him.

"You know all of chapter 7?"

"No… but I remember the gist of it… A lot of roes and wheat and grapes and pomegranates and apples and of course wine. I didn't know if I was a glutton for food or sex after I was done reading."

She gave a short laugh at his comical expression.

He looked down at her face, his joviality gone.

"You should do that more often."

She raised an eyebrow.

"Laugh. You should laugh more often. You have a perpetual wrinkle between your eyebrow and a scowl on your face when you look at me."

"Why do you think that is?" she asked.

"Because you have always wanted me, of course." He said without missing a beat.

She leaned up on her elbows then to look at his grinning face. "And it wouldn't be at all because you live to piss me off."

"Gauri, it pisses you off when I breathe. There is really no specificity to all your gripes against me."

"Do you remember how it all started?" she asked then, recalling the incident that had been the beginning.

"Yea, you got dad to beat the hell out of me." He said as if remembered it like yesterday.

"You broke my favorite doll!"

"After you tattled on me to dad."

"That was only because you told everyone that you have five girlfriends!"

He jerked up close to him suddenly and said in all seriousness, "My God Gauri! You were jealous of the girls around me when I was seven years old! Meaning… you wanted me for yourself even back then!"

She pursed her lips and her eyebrows scrunched together at the same time, but before she could get get out whatever tirade she was preparing in her head, he kissed her.

When he let go, she immediately said, "You were no different."

He cocked his eyebrow at that and she elaborated. "Remember Victor from your ninth grade class?"

He pretended to not remember, so she pulled back from him and asked, "Don't you want to know what he did when he cornered me in the back of school that day?"

"He didn't do anything. He gave you some third-rate movie dialogue about how he would kill himself if you didn't return his affections. And when you didn't buy that, he claimed that he would spread rumors around about you."

Her eyes widened as she listened. "How did you know exactly what he said?"

"A gentleman never reveals his sources." He grinned now.

She leaned up towards him now and asked what she had wanted to know for fifteen years. "What exactly did you do?"

"I didn't do anything."

"Fine! What did you say to him?"

He turned his head away. "What? Tell me." She repeated.

He tried to pull down the sheet that she was holding over her breasts, but she swatted his hand away. "If you want to enter the forbidden land, you need to take a walk down memory lane and tell me exactly what you said to Victor."

He sighed deeply and muttered, "Lord, even when women are novices in the sensual arts, they still know the power they hold!" When she nudged him with her elbow, he finally turned and answered her. "I merely advised him to make sure you never ever had the chance to even breathe the same air as him within a ten mile radius."

"What? Are you serious? He went to the same school as me. How was he going to accomplish that?"

"Oh Gauri! A man can do the impossible when protecting his nuts from being clipped off is the motivator."

"Having @#! what cut off? You threatened to unman him? That was the real threat? And he bought it? God, what a spineless fool he was!" she pronounced.

"Hey hey hey… I can be very convincing when I put my mind to it." He took offense to her implication that he only made empty threats.

"Take my wife for instance… You want to see how I convince her to lower this lovely barrier that she has put up between me and the forbidden fruits in all their edible splendor?" He tugged on the sheet again, the feral gleam back in his eyes, as he lowered her to the bed. This time she let him have his way as her body was as ripe for plucking as all of Solomon's clever euphemisms.
