Continued from here:

Note: The wedding vows and the saath phere description given here are based on net information.

The next morning they had the Sangeet ceremony in the Khurana House where breaking away from tradition, both the families assembled with the prospective bride and the groom. Besides Maan's friends and relatives, all employees of Khurana Constructions attended it. Punjabi wedding folk songs were sung and everyone danced to the tunes of the music. Sasha and Tasha were the only unhappy pair in the entire gathering but they too half heartedly joined in the dancing. Pinky and Adi dragged Geet and Maan to the dance floor and Maan danced his pathetic version of bhangra as he had done at the dhabba outing he had with Geet earlier, much to the amusement of everyone gathered. Geet's parents were thankful that the festivities were conducted when Dev and NT were not in town because they were not sure that they could have maintained their cool if they had seen him around. Maan had already briefed them about his showdown with Dev and his subsequent fake makeup with his brother in order to trap him and his wife. He had also warned them not to mention anything about Dev to Dadi as she still does not know that Geet was the one who was duped by Dev. As advised, they kept silent on the issue.

The wedding solemnized that evening was a grandiose affair. A mandap was erected in the lawns of the Khurana House. Clad in a heavily brocaded crimson lehenga choli and bedecked in her ancestral ornate jewelry from head to foot, Geet looked exquisite as a bride. She was brought to the mandap by her father, who then gave her hand to Maan in fulfillment of the Kanyadhan. Maan himself was looking dashing in the off-white sherwani selected by Geet. Although he agreed to wear the turban, he refused to put on the sehera as he felt strings of flowers covering his face would impede his vision of his beautiful bride. The bride and groom first exchanged garlands or the varmala. Then they took their seat behind the holy fire. Geet stole a look at the man to whom she would soon belong. Her eyes ran over his handsome face, lingering over his M-shaped lips between a closely trimmed moustache and beard. Just then Maan turned towards her and flashed his most charming smile, making her heart skip a beat and her face flame up in shyness.

After the initial prayers were recited by the priest, Maan and Geet got up to take the saath pheres. Maan insisted that both he and Geet will recite the marriage vows aloud in Hindi as they took the pheres. His eyes never left Geet's face throughout the ceremony as he held her hand and led her around the holy pyre. During the first phera, they invoked the gods for pure and nourishing food and a life that is noble and respectful. During the second phera, they prayed for physical, mental and spiritual strength to lead a healthy, peaceful and contented life. During the third phera, they prayed that they both may be granted the strength to share happiness and pain together. During the fourth phera, they prayed for mutual love and respect for each other and their respective families. During the fifth phera, they prayed for begetting beautiful, heroic and noble children. During the sixth phera they, prayed for peaceful long life with each other and during the last phera, they prayed for a life of understanding, loyalty, unity and companionship not only for themselves but also for the peace of the universe.

Once the seven steps were taken, Maan held both her hands in his and looking deeply into her eyes, he said "We have taken the seven steps. With this you have become mine forever and I have become yours. Yes, we have become partners in life. Hereafter, I cannot live without you. Do not live without me. Let us share our joys and sorrows with each other. We are word and meaning, united. You are thought and I am sound. May the day and the night be honey-sweet for us. May the earth and the heavens be honey-sweet for us. As the heavens are stable, as the earth is stable, as the mountains are stable, as the whole universe is stable, so may our union be permanent and stable."

Geet and Maan then resumed their seat in front of the fire. The priest asked him to put the mangalsutra and the sindoor for the bride. Maan nodded his head and put the mangalsutra and lifting the ghunghat he smeared the vermillion on her maang. With this they finally became man and wife.

That night when Maan stepped into their tastefully decorated bedroom, a heavily brocaded bridal chunni came flying towards him and landed on his head. Geet stuck out her tongue and rushed to him to help him extricate the yards of silk cloth entangled around his head. Once the material was removed he saw his beautiful new bride standing in front of him in a tight fitting lehenga and choli which accentuated her curves. Seeing her husband's bemused expression, Geet looked down at herself and hurriedly crossed her arms across her chest in a desperate attempt to cover herself. Smiling at his wife's predicament, Maan lowered his head and turned around to allow her to make herself presentable. While she quickly pulled over her head the silk night gown he had bought for her, and nimbly slid out of her choli and lehenga, he couldn't resist pulling her leg.

"I thought that on the wedding night, the new bride normally sits demurely on the bed, her head covered with ghunghat, patiently awaiting the arrival of her husband. Here my bride seems to want me to wear the ghunghat instead! Quite a novel reception, I must say!" He turned around to look teasingly at his wife.

A flustered Geet tried to explain by rambling, "I am sorry, Maan. I didn't mean to throw that chunni at you. You see this bridal attire is so heavy that I was feeling very uncomfortable wearing it for so long. Initially, I thought I'll wait for you in it but you took so much time coming up to the room, I couldn't bear to wear it for another minute. So I decided to change into something more comfortable. I had aimed to throw the chunni on the bed but it landed on you instead. Hope you don't mind."

"Mind? Why should I mind? How many husbands will have the pleasure of being greeted by a semi clad wife instead of a fully covered one on their wedding night?" he teased.

Geet gave him a sharp slap on his arm.

"Ouch!" he caught her hand. "That hurt!"

"It was meant to!" she retorted and twisting her hand out of his, Geet walked up to the dressing table and sat in front of the mirror to remove her jewelry. She unscrewed her ear rings and moved on to her necklace. Maan who was busy removing his watch, looked up and saw his wife wrestling with her heavy necklace as she unsuccessfully tried to remove the offensive piece of jewelry. Smiling at her impatience, he walked behind her and pushing her hands gently away, he proceeded to unclasp the necklace. He swung it over her head and laid it on the dressing table. He then bent down and kissed the nape of her neck, making her tremble. He removed the jewelry on her forehead and replaced it with a gentle kiss.

Holding by her waist he lifted her up and sitting on the stool in her place, he pulled her on to his lap. He ran his fingers across her thickening waist and unhooked the kamar band he had gifted her. He carefully laid it on the dressing table and looked up at her. As she stared into his eyes, he held her hands and seductively slid her bangles out of them, one by one. Once he finished removing the last of the bangles, he gently kissed her hands. He then moved to her fingers and slid her rings from them. He kissed each finger making her quiver at the feel on his lips on her finger tips. He then slowly turned her right palm over and scrutinized it closely.

"What are you searching for?" asked Geet curiously.

"My initial," he muttered, still engrossed in her palm. Search as he may he could not find the letter M on her palm in the elaborate designs.

He picked up the other palm and searched for it amidst the intricate motif but was unable to find anything.

He looked into her eyes and asked in a disappointed tone, "You did not get my initial inscribed, did you?"

"Of course, I did. It's a shame you can't find your own initial," she said mockingly.

He gave her a stern look and picked her palms again to search for the elusive M. Seeing her try hard to stifle a yawn, his heart sank.

"I don't think I'll be able to find it." he said dejectedly, "Show it to me yourself."

"Are you sure you want to give up? They say that if the groom can't find his initials, then he has to give the bride a gift."

"It is easier to give you a gift than search for my initials. I don't think I'll be able to find it even if we are up all night. So I accept defeat. Show me where it is."

Geet gave him a crooked smile and showed him a pattern on her palm.

"That's not an M!" he exclaimed.

"Who said it was. It is an intertwined double D," she stated matter-of-factly.

"Double D?" he asked incredulously, "Those are not my initials!"

"Have you forgotten the name I've given you, Maan? DD stands for Dusht Dhanav," she said amidst giggles.

Maan gritted his teeth and gave her a piercing look which clearly expressed his displeasure.

Geet turned more serious and said, "I was only pulling your leg."

He turned his face away from her and continued to sulk.

Realising that she had upset him, she tentatively stretched her hand and holding him by his chin, she turned him to face her.

"I'm sorry! I will not call you by that name again. Please forgive me," she pleaded, her eyes quickly filling up with tears.

Seeing her tears, he was alarmed and quickly wiping them away he said, "Hey, I was also pulling your leg by pretending to be angry. Come on now. Cheer up."

She smiled through her tears and flung her arms around him. He hugged her back, caressing her head reassuringly. Later, holding the back of her head, he lifted her face to look into her eyes. Noticing the tiredness in her eyes, he understood that the elaborate and lengthy wedding celebrations had taken a toll on the poor girl.

So he lifted her, laid her on the bed and asked her to go to sleep. She tried to protest saying that it was their nuptial night. Pushing back a stray tendril of hair which had fallen over her eyes, he cupped her face and said that he was prepared to wait, for they have an entire life time of togetherness. Right now she needed to rest and he will make sure she gets it. She gratefully acknowledged his patience, pulled him to her for a goodnight kiss and promptly fell asleep. He watched her sleeping face for a long while before getting up to change into his night clothes. He then stretched beside her and slipped into slumber with beautiful dreams of his bride.
