Chapter Two – Will Things Fall Into Place?
Nupur was not an early riser, but on this particular day she woke up around 6-30 am. She peeked down from her berth and saw Gunjan curled up, reading a Hindi novel. She got down immediately and sat next to her sister. Slowly she pulled out her rubber band and removed the braid and jasmine flowers. Gunjan watched her as she untangled the knots in her hair with her bare hands. She blew from the side, causing her locks to fly smoothly and the smile on her face got wider and wider as she shook her head, letting her mane fly around her. Finally, she tucked it all behind her ears and looked at her sister.
"Di you are up so early?" Gunjan asked. "That's shocking."
"A shock, rather a surprise is very healthy once in a while Gunjan," Nupur said. "Which boring novel are you reading?"
"It's a classic Hindi literature novel, Di," Gunjan said. "By my favorite author. You should try it!"
"Spare me from the torture," Nupur said. "I like reading only romance novels in which the prince sweeps his princess off her feet. Sighhh how romantic."
"Di all that happens only in one's dreams," Gunjan, the ever realist said.
"Uffo Gunjan!" Nupur said. "I do have a prince, and he will come on a white horse!"
"If that is going to make my Di happy," Gunjan said. "Then I hope it happens."
"Meri Gunjan," Nupur said. "I hope even you get a prince for you."
"I will be happy with whoever Bauji and Bui choose for me," Gunjan said simply.
"My sweet, simple sister," Nupur said. "Stay this way forever."
Gunjan just smiled. She took out her hairbrush and started brushing her hair. She had lovely long black hair, with a tint of brown in it. She kept brushing it until she was satisfied, and then asked for her father. Gunjan said he had gone to the TT to talk about some matters, and that he would take time. Nupur parted her hair to the right and started braiding it. She secured the braid with a rubber band and comber her fringes to the right.
"Aah perfect," she said. "Gunjan I look nice na?"
"Just like a filmy heroine," Gunjan said, smiling at her sister.
"I knew it!" Nupur said. "Like Aishwarya right?"
"Much more beautiful," Gunjan said. "This world hasn't seen such a beauty as Nupur Bhushan!"
Nupur patted her shoulder and gave flying kisses in the air, just like a film star. She was the ultimate drama queen, and would leave no stone unturned to show off her histrionics. She was a very filmy girl, the one who was a dreamer. She leaned against the window and looked outside. She saw paddy fields and she smiled. Morena was a small town and there were paddy fields there also. She always dreamed of running into the arms of her "Raj" in the fields, while he sang a romantic number for her.
"Nupur! Gunjan!" Bauji said, snapping her out of her reverie. "Here's your breakfast. Aalo parantha."
"Aalo parantha!" Nupur exclaimed. "My favorite! Thank you so much Bauji."
"Thank you Bauji," Gunjan said softly. "Did you have breakfast, or will you join us?"
"I am afraid I have some important work to settle," Bauji said. "You girls carry on, I will eat later."
"Bauji eat with us naa," Nupur said. "Pleaassseee!"
"Nupur I really am busy," Bauji said. "Some other time..."
"Bauji-"
"Let it be Di," Gunjan said. "Am I not good company?"
"Arre Gunjan you are so boring," Nupur remarked. On seeing her sisters crestfallen face, she said "I didn't mean it that way Gunjan...I mean you are still my sweet sister."
"Boring and sweet," Gunjan added, giggling.
Bauji left the two sisters to themselves, as he went to complete his work. Nupur took a bite of her aalo parantha and munched on happily. A bright smile appeared over her face as she enjoyed the delicacy. She took a piece and stuffed it into Gunjan's mouth.
"It's awesome na?" Nupur asked. "Yummmmmyyyy!"
"Di!" Gunjan said, chewing on the piece of parantha. "Be careful!"
"Uffo Gunjan," Nupur said. "It's a parantha, not rat poison! And when you eat parantha, you eat it having loads of fun!"
"As you say Di," Gunjan said.

Mayank sat down at the dining table to have breakfast. His mother had made aalo parantha, a dish which he was not particularly fond of. Yet, without a single complaint he ate the food, reading a book at the same time. Shilpa snatched the book from him, shut it firmly and put it away.
"Maa," Mayank complained. "That's such an interesting book. And I was at the best part."
"No Mayu," Shilpa said. "No reading while eating, unless you are eating alone!"
"Maa please give it back, please," Mayank pleaded.
"No Mayu," Shilpa said firmly. "Now eat the paranthas. I made it with so much love for you."
"Okay," Mayank pouted sulkily, like a little child. He slowly broke the parantha into pieces and ate it, his eyes in a trance. Shilpa took a piece, dipped it in curd and pickle and stuffed it into his mouth. "Maa! What are you doing?"
"I have made such a lovely dish and you are busy dreaming," Shilpa said. "Now eat properly and go to college."
"Aah...college...my home," Mayank said with satisfaction.
"So what is this, your hell?" Shilpa asked, teasing him.
"I mean Excel is my second home," he quickly covered. "This is always my home, where resides the most wonderful mother ever."
"Now that's better," Shilpa said. "Eat fast. Why are you so slow today?"
"Eating Maa," Mayank said, finishing up his meal.
Once he was done, he washed his utensils, grabbed his bag and left for college. He caught the early morning bus and since his was the first stop, he had no issues whatsoever in finding himself a seat. And of course, this was the first course of the bus, and only students got in, so he really didn't have to sacrifice his seat like he did for the kind old lady like he did the previous evening. He dug into his bag to take out his book, but realized that he had forgotten to take it, after breakfast. Sighing, he just looked ahead.
After twenty minutes precisely, he arrived at Excel college. He walked straight to the library, borrowed some books and went into his classroom. As usual, Mayank Sharma was the first student to have arrived in class. He took out his text book, and revised what he had studied the other day. As he was doing so, he felt a tap on his shoulder.
"Hello Mayank," said Uday Bhushan, the twin of the college's diva Dia.
"Hello Uday," Mayank said. "You are here for?"
"Nothing," Uday said. "I just wanted to say hello to you!"
"And since you already did," Mayank said. "Good bye."
"So rude," Uday said, sulkily.
"Goodbye Uday," Mayank said, and Uday walked away from there.
During lunch hour that day, Mayank happened to be sitting in the table right behind the one of Samrat, Dia, Uday and their gang. He didn't mean to eavesdrop, but he couldn't help but hear their devilish plan of troubling Uday's and Dia's cousin sisters Nupur and Gunjan from Morena. They had planned to throw a party to humiliate the sisters beyond belief. As Uday recited his plan loudly, his sister hushed him as she did not want "unwanted" people to know about their plan. On this, Mayank got up and looked at them.
"In the last half an hour you all have recited your plan so many times that," Mayank paused. "That I know who is doing what and what exact time. Good going."
"Um Mayank," Dia said. "Would you like to join us at the party?"
"Your party?" Mayank asked. "I do not want to risk losing my brain."
He walked away after he received an angry glare from Dia. He simply could not understand girls like her, in fact he could not understand girls at all. He knew what Dia and her troupe were going to do to the poor Bhushan sisters was insensitive and harsh, but he knew better than to meddle with other people's business's.

Nupur and Gunjan looked out of the taxi window and gasped in awe at the magnificent city. It was a big city, nothing like they had seen before. It was overcrowded, but they didn't mind. Everyone seemed to be busy in their own lives, not really bothering about others. It was a fast life, a life which would take them a while to get accustomed to. Everyone seemed so passionate and energy driven.
It was exactly what Nupur had dreamed of.
"There are so many people here," Gunjan gushed.
"These are not people Gunjan, they are honeybees," Nupur exclaimed. "Aah this is life."
She rolled down the window and faced outside and felt the warm salty sea breeze of Mumbai caress her face. She smiled happily at the tickling sensation. She knew it, this stay would change her life forever. Everything would be perfect. She, her prince charming in the wonderful city of Mumbai.
Dia Bhushan was the ultimate diva of Excel college. She was a typical spoilt brat, the pampered princess, who wanted everything her way. She had a huge crush on Samrat which she confused to be love. She was not a mean person, actually, but her selfish and self-centered nature made her seem more like a villain. She was undoubtedly against the arrival of the "Morena Sisters" and had planned out how to make their lives miserable to the core.
Dia's twin brother, Uday Bhushan was the total opposite of her. He was neither selfish nor self-centered, he was just plain dumb and followed everything his sister told him, regardless of whether she was right or wrong. He was muscular and hefty due to his extraordinary appetite. The canteen boy knew Uday inside out. He was lazy and wacky, and many a times said things which embarrassed and annoyed Dia and the gang.
Uday and Dia were waiting in their home, for their cousins, Nupur and Gunjan. Dia was dressed in a pink strapless dress and her short hair was lay open. Uday was in black shirt and blue jeans. They heard the sound of a car driving in, and sat inside their bedroom.
___
Nupur, Gunjan and their Bauji got out of the taxi and rang the bell of the huge Bhushan residence. Bauji aka Shashi's younger brother Ravi Bhushan opened the door. He immediately touched the feet of his elder brother and gave encouraging hugs to his niece's.
"Welcome to Mumbai," Ravi said. "Uday, Dia come down, your cousins have arrived."
Uday and Dia walked down the stairs, with a deceptive smile plastered on their faces. They nodded at the girls. Dia scanned their dresses from top to bottom, with an "erm" expression on her face.
"So you are...Gunjan?" she asked, pointing to the younger sister.
"Yes," Gunjan said.
"And you are.....Nupur?" Uday asked.
"Absolutely," Nupur said. "Uday Bhaiyya and Dia, right?"
"Hmm yeah," Dia said.
Nupur scanned her cousin sisters outfit. It was like she hardly wore anything. Back in Morena such items of clothing were not at all allowed. In fact if a girl did wear a skirt above the knee length, she was scorned for indecency. She wondered how all this was accepted in Mumbai.
"Welcome to Mumbai," Dia said. "I am sure you will have plenty of fun."
"We sure hope so," Nupur said. "The two of us are joining your college right? It will be awesome fun! The four of us and all our friends!"
"Yeah...right," Dia said. "We are throwing a welcome party for you two today. Arrive at the poolside by 8-00 pm. It will be a night you will never forget."
"Oh wow party!" Nupur exclaimed. "I love parties. This is going to be so much fun. I simply cannot wait!"
"Patience is a big virtue," Dia said, in saintly tone. "Dodo, lets go, we have heaps of celebration work to do. You girls go up to your room, freshen up and take rest, and join us at the party at 8!"
"Sure," Nupur said brightly. "chalo Gunjan, lets relax for a bit before the party."
_______________
Nupur rushed into the bathroom before her sister did, so that she could take longer to get ready. She filled the bucket with lukewarm water and set everything aside for her bath. Once the water was ready, she slipped out of her clothes and started bathing. Her cousin's lived in a lavish house, and she was sure Dia felt like a princess here. Both Dia and Uday Bhaiyya seemed like nice, friendly people. What touched her most was the fact that they had thrown a party in the girls honor.
When she was done with her bath she wore a shiny yellow shalwar kameez which she had designed herself. Gunjan entered the bathroom on her exit from it. Nupur loved their new bedroom. It was a big room, with two single beds, two cupboards, a large window, a large bathroom, a dressing table cum mirror and a study table.
It was much bigger than her room back in Morena and she simply loved it. She stood by the window and felt the silky touch of the cool breeze brush her hair softly. Her wet curls flew softly and she brushed them away from her face occasionally. She was totally looking forward to the things to be done in Mumbai- dancing in the rain, eating the famous bhel-puri, having the yummy ice golas and what not...and yeah, not to mention, meeting her favorite celebrities.
"Di get ready soon," Gunjan's soft voice said.
"Okay Gunjan," Nupur said. "I am dressed, I just need to put on make-up and do my hair!"
"Okay, fast Di," Gunjan said.
Nupur brushed out her long hair and tied it into a pretty braid. She applied minimum make-up and finally looked at her sister who was wearing a cream colored chudidar with her hair left open.
"Shall we go?" Nupur asked, giving her hand to her sister.
"Okay," Gunjan said, taking her elder sister's hand.
The party was terrible. Dia's friends teased and mocked at them so much that Gunjan wanted to leave the party. Nupur, who wanted to fit in and make friends, insisted that they stayed back and enjoyed the celebration. When everyone taunted and troubled them, Dia came to their rescue, but some part of Nupur told her that even Dia was troubling them, just sugarcoating their behavior. Soon the Mumbai crowd asked her to dance on stage, so she obliged, another reason being that she loved to dance.
Though she loved to dance, she was not really aware of any stylish moves, so she did what she deemed appropriate. She tied her dupatta around her waist, put on a brave smile and started dancing. Her steps were simple and innocent, which to the Morena folk seemed beautiful, but to the Mumbai crowd, a mere piece of entertainment.
When the song faded away, she got down from the stage and went up to her sister, cousins and friends. Gunjan gave her a tight hug for the brave and lovely performance, while Dia just smiled brightly at her. Her so-called friends acted like they were taken in by her dance.
"Now it's Gunjan's turn," said Dia. "Gunjan can you dance?"
"No," Gunjan said, frightened. "Please do not ask me to dance. I have no idea about dance."
"Okay no worries," Dia said. "Am going to tie this blindfold around your eyes, and you need to find us out, blindfolded."
"I am...Di I do not wan-"
"Uffo Gunjan be a sport!" Nupur exclaimed. "Of course she will play."
Dia tied the blindfold around Gunjan's eyes and watched as she started to play. According to their plan, everyone moved out of the way, and Gunjan started moving dangerously close to the swimming pool. Nupur panicked, as her sister didn't know how to swim, and neither did she. And without much ado, Gunjan fell into the pool.
"GUNJAN!" Nupur screamed. "Someone save her."
She felt fear creep inside her as she looked around, helpless, for someone who would be kind enough to help her sister. She found everyone laughing ruthlessly, without giving a damn about what happened to Gunjan.
"Somebody save her," Nupur repeated. "She doesn't know how to swim. She will drown."
Their friend, Bhavesh Kumar, the only decent one in the crowd, jumped into the pool and brought Gunjan out. While he kept asking whether she was okay, Nupur pulled her sister and took her up to their bedroom.
She took out Gunjan's white pajamas, a towel and took her to the restroom. Once she changed, Nupur dried her hair with the towel and made her lie down.
"You are alright na Gunjan?" Nupur asked.
"Yes Di," Gunjan said. "Di they are so mean to us...why?"
"Because they don't know us well yet," Nupur said. "When they do, they will love us more than we ourselves do!"
She removed Gunjan's spectacles and tucked her into bed. After wishing her a good night, Nupur herself went to bed. As she cuddled herself cozily under the warm blanket, she recollected the day's moments. It had gone fairly well, except for the party. Though she had comforted Gunjan, she herself wondered whether things would get alright, and whether they would blend in with the Mumbaikars. As she kept thinking, she drifted off to sleep, feeling slightly better at the thought of her first day in Excel college the next day.

Before switching off the lights to go to bed, he wondered whether Dia's and Uday's cousins would be alright, especially after he had overheard their plans at the canteen that day. He hoped they were alright and were strong enough to withstand the hard life in Mumbai. Only if he knew....
