******* Part 6 *******
*************
"Chalo Geet, ab Bidaai ka waqt hai" Naintara said as she entered the room. The whole marriage had gone smoothly, there were not many people present at the wedding, just close relatives and few family friends. The marriage had taken place at the Haveli upon serpanch's insistence instead of at the temple as it was planned. Naintara was just glad that the wedding happened without any mishap. Her brother, as promised followed all the rituals, took the pheras, tied the mangalsutra and filled the maang with sindoor but he never did take once glance at Geet. Naintara sighed, Geet had too much to do, and she wondered if the girl was capable of following what Naintara planned for her.............. She hoped for the best but for now she was happy that finally her brother was married, Geet was now officially the Badi Bahu of Khurana's…. Mrs. Maan Singh Khurana……
***********
"Tum dono yanhee ruko hum arti ki thali lathe hain" Naintara said, walking past them and entering the house to get everything in order for the grah-pravesh of the new Bahu, the eldest daughter-in-law of the Khurana family. She ignored the envious look Myra was giving to Geet, whose face was still concealed with the ghunghat. Naintara smirked as she arranged the thali and the kalash remembering the shocked face of Myra when she saw Geet, and then later the surprised faces of rest of the family members, they all were surprised and shocked by seeing the beauty of Geet. She turned her attention on her brother who stood beside Geet dutifully. Naintara was still very apprehensive about her decision of hurrying with the marriage and not giving Maan the time to even meet Geet. Her mind went back to the conversation she had with her brother few nights ago when she had returned from Madhi after meeting Geet. She had tried talking to him then, wanting to know what his thoughts were on marriage and Geet but that had not gone as she had expected, he gave no indication as to what he thought about Geet and whether he was really happy with the marriage…. That conversation had left her restless and risen her apprehension….
Naintara would head out to the study for she knew that is where she would find her brother…. She had to talk to him, know what his thoughts were… what he really wanted…
Naintara rose from the bed, quickly tying her gown wrapper and quietly leaving the room so as not to disturb her husband's sleep. She quickly headed towards the study, very well knowing that her brother would still be in the study despite the late hour of the night. The light that glazed from the study's closed door confirmed her assumption; she knocked the door for courtesy sake but knew well enough that there won't be any response from inside. She curled her fingers on the doorknob, took a deep breath in, trying to calm herself before the battle she knew will be taking place once she stepped inside…..
"Veeray" She called out as she entered the brightly lit study, her eyes searched through the room finally resting on one corner where her brother sat on his chair, his back facing her. "Veeray" she called out as she walked up to him but again did not receive any reply. She shook her head at her brother's stubbornness and at his obvious display of being absorbed in the sheets that were spread in front of him; on his desk.
"Veeray, it is very late… don't you think you should head to bed now?" Naintara questioned but received silence in reply.
"Now what have I done? Humse itna gussa kis liye" Naintara asked not able to understand why her brother was adamant on not responding to her. She couldn't help but glare at the sheets that had seemed to have his attention.
"Veeray" Naintara sighed, this time placing her hand on his shoulder for it to be shrugged off by her brother.
"You and your mood swings…. I swear they are worst than Myra's!" Naintara grumbled annoyed by his unresponsive behavior.
"Do not compare me to that… that annoying, forgetful, disorganized, and irritating pregnant woman!" Naintara allowed herself a small smile and a pat on her back at her victory of finally getting a verbal response from her brother. Her brother was so predictable but he liked to think otherwise!
"Maan! don't forget that she is your brother's wife, give her a little respect?" Naintara reprimanded her brother for his not so pleasant description of Myra.
"Respect be damned! That woman has annoyed me the whole evening, disturbing me from my work" Maan ground his teeth in anger.
"What has she done this time?" Naintara asked, although she knew what he was really annoyed about.
"She kept flaunting her phone in front of my eyes!" Maan growled angrily.
Naintara smiled at her brother. "Are you upset because she teased you with her phone or because you were unsuccessful in getting a glimpse of your future wife's picture which was what Myra was really flaunting in front of your eyes"
"A picture that showed nothing but her eyes?"
"Ah… so you did see her picture?" Naintara asked hopefully
"I might have had a glance…" Maan lied; he had more than just a glance.
Naintara smiled catching the slight smirk on her brother's face. "So?" she pressed wanting to know his thoughts on Geet.
"So?" Maan asked feigning ignorance as he once again resumed the act of intently studying the layouts in front of him; he was not going to give his sister the satisfaction of eliciting his curiosity. He knew very well that it was upon his sister's order that Myra had kept teasing him with his future wife's picture… a picture that showed nothing but her eyes. No! He will not display his curiosity and neither his slight excitement for his upcoming wedding.
"Maan?" Naintara pressed not ready to give up but yet again received no response from him.
"Myra seemed to be very pleased with my choice…." Naintara stated, knowing it was enough to rile him enough to make a verbal response.
"Don't you dare talk about her… I am eagerly counting the days till she leaves this house" Maan replied angrily.
"Maan! She has done nothing to warrant such disrespect from you!" Naintara reprimanded her brother again.
"She did so! That WOMAN had the audacity to order.... order me… ME! Maan Singh Khurana to accompany her for shopping! shopping?" Naintara could not help the laughter that escaped from her at her brother's pride in himself and his obsession with his own name.
"Didi!" Maan shouted, turning around his chair to face his sister with a fierce scowl on his face but his sister only grinned back at him.
"Shopping for your wedding, might I remind you?" Naintara pointed out, the same beaming smile still planted on her face.
"Wedding that will most likely not be taking place" Maan stated, ignoring the gasp from his sister.
"Don't jinks it!" Naintara shouted, swatting her brother's shoulder.
"It's already jinks" Maan snapped, rubbing his shoulder and shooting a glare at his sister who just rolled her eyes at his exaggeration.
"Not this time Veeray, I promise. This time there won't be any obstacles!" Naintara stated firmly.
"What makes you so sure?" Maan inquired as he went back to studying the layouts of his current project.
"Because this time, I have found the right girl for you. The perfect one! And this time I am going to do everything possible to get you married" Naintara promised her brother.
"Why?"
"Why what?" Naintara asked as she watched her brother's slouched shoulders and his bent head.
"Why? Why do you love me so much?" Maan asked his sister, his hands clutching his head.
"Maan!" Naintara called out, worry etched in her voice, she rested her hand on his shoulder as she tried to turn his chair around to face her. She bent down, resting her knees on the floor and reached her hands out to hold her brother's clenched one.
"Maan, look at me please?" Naintara requested, tightening her hold on his clenched hands.
"Why?" He asked again as his guilty eyes stared deeply into hers trying to find the hatred in them but they only reflected love and pain.
"Why I love you? Is that what you want to know?" Naintara asked her brother holding his gaze with her eyes.
"How can I not love you? You are my brother!" Naintara replied.
"I am also the one responsible for Pari's death!" Naintara flinched at her brother's statement, her hands stilled in their movement of unclenching her brother's tightly curled fingers.
"You dare! You dare to make such a statement!" Naintara shouted controlling her urge to hit something… someone…. She took a deep breath and counted backwards from 20 to 1; a method that helped her in controlling her emotions….
"It's the truth!" Maan stated staring directly into his sister's pained filled eyes that were withholding the unshed tears.
"No! it's not!" Naintara snapped. "The only one responsible for Pari's death is Dev!"
"I am equally responsible for it" Maan pressed, wanting to be yelled and accused for his part in killing Pari.
"How so? Where you driving the car?" Naintara asked.
"No, but-" Maan tried to explain.
"Where you in that car?" Naintara asked cutting her brother off.
"No, but if I had only just liste-" Maan tried once again to make her understand, maybe then she would not hold Dev Jiju responsible for this, maybe he will finally get the peace of being punished for his own mistake of not fulfilling the responsibility his sister had given to him.
"I am not having this discussion Maan, I have stated my point, I, do not hold you responsible for the accident! End of discussion" Naintara stated firmly, hastily wiping at her eyes when the treacherous tears trickled down her cheeks. It still hurt her, still pained her to even think about Pari… the pain of losing her was forever etched in her heart…
"Why can't you punish me for the part I played in it!" Maan screamed choosing to ignore the hurt and pain his sister was suffering from being reminded of the loss she suffered nearly two years ago, the loss of losing the most precious treasure of her life… her daughter…. her Pari….
"Is that what you want? Punishment? To be free from the guilt? Is that all you care about?" Naintara asked replacing her pain with anger. She suddenly gasped at the thought of her brother's marriage.
"The marriage…. Do you think of it as a punishment? Is that why you gave no objection to the change in bride? Have you agreed to marry because you believe it is my punishment for your part in Pari's death? Is that it, Maan? Answer me!" Naintara demanded as she shook her brother's forearm.
"No, of course not! I don't think of it as a punishment" Maan answered in an attempt to assure his sister and calm her rising anger. He realized how much he had hurt her by mentioning the accident… by reminding her of Pari's death… but he had to do it, not for himself but for her….
"Then why did you consent for the marriage? Are you happy with this alliance? With my decision?" Naintara swallowed her emotions and looked away from his concerned filled eyes, as she blinked away the tears that stung in her eyes. The pain and hurt was no longer evident in her eyes instead her eyes clouded with worry and apprehension as she waited for her brother's answer.
"I am happy, Didi" Maan tried to assure her sister.
"Then why didn't you object to my decision of choosing someone else for you?" Naintara asked not believing her brother's words.
"Because you chose her! Because you want to see me married…. Because this is making you happy" Maan stated in a strangled voice.
"But you must be happy with this marriage! I don't want you to feel compelled. I promise I will be happy with whatever you may decide. You must know, Maan, I can only be happy if you are happy with this marriage!" Naintara explained to her brother.
"I am happy, Didi, I really am" Maan once again assured his sister, she had every right to doubt him, he had not exactly shown any interest in his own marriage preparations and neither did he took a second glance at the numerous girls he met upon his sister's insistence. He knew his sister had noticed his reluctance behind the faade of attentiveness he had displayed in Channi's presence; the few meetings he was forced to attend.
"Promise me Maan, Promise me that you will accept Geet with all your heart" Naintara asked still not convinced with his words.
"I promise, I will accept G-Geet as my wife" Maan promised his sister. "Didi, you know I have always given my best in every decision I have taken, every challenge and every project that came my way and I promise I will do the same in my marriage" Maan added reminding his sister.
"But this is not some project that will only last for a year or two! This is marriage, once you are in, you are in for life! I hope you understand that?" Naintara tried to explain her brother, hoping he would realize and understand the difference and the big change that is soon to take place in his life once he becomes a married man.
"I do know that!" Maan snapped annoyed at his sister for having so little faith in him.
"I hope you do Maan…. I hope you do…" Naintara whispered as she headed out of the study, leaving her brother to brood over her words while she tried to deal with the pain in her heart….
Maan sat still on his chair, listening intently until he no longer heard the fading noise of his sister's footsteps. He waited for few more minutes to make sure she was far away from the study.
"Hello, Jiji?" Maan spoke in a soft whisper; he had fished out his phone as soon as he was sure that his sister was back in her room.
"Jiji, main Maan…. Ji, yes, I did" Maan answered, his eyes darting at the door when he heard the noise of some movements upstairs.
"Yes, I have done exactly as you said… emotions? Anger, hurt, pain… haan, she did cry… Nahi, she still blames Dev jiju… but I tried… haan, par….
Maan Singh Khurana watched silently as his sister performed all the Ghra-Pravesh rituals happily. He was happy to see the smile and happiness back on his sister's face, for the past two years every since Pari's death he had felt like he had lost his sister along with Pari but now seeing her so happy and back to her normal self gave him immense relief. It did not matter that he had to sacrifice his freedom for it, it did not matter that he had to use Sasha and break her heart for it, it did not matter that he had to live with the guilt of playing with Sasha's feelings because it all meant nothing when it came to seeing his sister happy and out of depression.
Naintara watched happily as her brother and his wife entered the house, she had never been this happy before in her life. Her long awaited dream of seeing her brother married and settled has finally came true, and she had fulfilled the promise she had made of finding the most beautiful girl for her brother. She watched as Geet staggered while walking in, she quickly moved to help her but stopped seeing her brother helping her.
"Sabhal ke" Maan whispered to his wife holding her left arm as she steadied herself.
Geet nodded her head, holding back the cry from pain; his hold on her arm was tight. She did not want to be here, she did not want to live in this new haveli with a new family. She did not know what marriage really meant, she did not know what she was suppose to do as a wife, she did not know what it meant to be a Badi Bahu of the family as this stranger who her father called Naintara had constantly been calling her. All she knew was that she wanted to get away from everything; she wanted to go back to her room and live her life in seclusion as she was used to. She did not like this new life her father had thrust her in, she had cried and begged her father to let her stay in the haveli but all her pleading went unheard. He had simply ordered her to stop with the crying and get ready for the marriage. For the first time in her life Geet felt hatred for her father when he had pushed her inside the car and sent her away from him to this new life, to this new family to live amongst strangers who were now her family. She was torn. Part of her was elated to finally be away from her father and brothers tortures but the other part was filled with grief to be thrown away from the only place she ever knew but mostly she was terrified to finally be married to the man whom her brothers had told the horrifying tales of his tortures. She just hoped that he was not too horrible to her, not as mean as her brothers have been telling her for years.
Geet did not know how she lived through the past two days, with these strangers staring at her, asking her questions, applying stuff on her face and body and dressing her up in the most heaviest and the beautiful dress she had ever seen. She had sat still throughout the whole process, following every instruction as a robot, her mind was far away from her body, her mind and her soul was in her room, in the basement where she sat on her bed reading her favorite book. But even that practice didn't seem to work because every now and then her mind returned to the happenings around her, she felt the many eyes on her, she cringed at the loud voices all around her controlling the urge to cover her ears with her hands and flee back to her room. Her mind returned when she felt her father placing her hand on the stranger's hand who was now going to be her husband, her mind returned when the stranger tied the long black and gold beaded thread on her neck, her mind returned when she felt his fingers filling something on her parted hair. She did not know why her mind returned to her body at these times, she did not know why she could not return back to her sanctuary away from all the crowd and loud voices. She had felt like she was trapped in her own body. She just needed to perform the task in front of her so as not to anger her father or brothers or shame her pati. She remembered giving her father and brothers pleaded look, her eyes begging them to not send her away but her father had only glared at her in anger and her brothers smirked as they watched her drive away from the haveli in the car filled with strangers. She had remained still with fear throughout the long drive, her head bent down as she sat beside her husband afraid to even make slight movement in the presence of these strangers.
"Matarani ki kripa se sab kuch theek se ho gaya" It was the voice of Savitri Devi that brought Geet back from her thoughts.
She sat there on the sofa beside her pati as everyone talked about the marriage. The voices were getting louder, they were too many people around her, she grasped her hands together in a tight grip fighting the urge to run and hide in her room away from the crowd and the loudness. Then she felt it…. she saw it….. she was back in her room sitting on the bed reading her favorite book there was no voices and no people, everything was just like it always was….. She was away… far away from the reality; she was back at the haveli….. she was completely unaware of her surrounding, she did not see the people around her, she did not hear the voices of Dev and Vicky teasing Maan, she was safe in her room with her book…..
"Geet" Naintara called out; getting no response she placed her hand on her shoulder and shook her.
Geet came back to her surroundings when she felt someone shaking her. She drew in a long breath realizing there was no going back to that life again. She watched through her veil as Savitri Devi asked if she was alright.
"Chalo Geet, you must be tired. Hum aapko aapka kamra dikha dethe hain" Naintara said wrapping an arm around Geet's shoulder and walking her up the stairs to her new room. All the while chatting about how she will like her new room and this new house. Geet just walked with her in a daze, her eyes drifting from the hand placed on her arm to Naintara's face in wonder. She didn't know what to do, she was in shock, for the first time in many years someone had touched her with care, after many years someone was looking at her with such affection. It was affection Geet was sure of it, as she had seen that same look before, she had been bestowed with the same smile and the same affectionate eyes before but that had been many years ago….. when she had felt loved, when she had someone who held her, who loved her….. but that person had died a long time ago…. Her mother had broken the promise to be with her forever and left her alone to live a lonely life….. her mother……
"This is your new room, I hope you will like it and if you don't then we can always change it according to your choice" Naintara said as she sat beside Geet on the bed and lifted her veil to look at her.
"Bilkul Pari ho aap" Naintara said as she stared at Geet's beautiful face. She smiled when she saw Geet tried to cover her yawn with her hands. "You are very tired. Why don't you freshen up and rest for a while. It will take some time for Veeray so just rest till he comes" Naintara said as she patted Geet's head. Geet looked at Naintara with fear and confusion, not understanding what she was taking about. Who was this Veeray and why would he come to her room? Will he hurt her? What did she do wrong?
"Aapka Pati hai yanhi pe tho ayenge. Yeh kamra ab aap dono ka hai" Naintara explained upon seeing Geet's confused face wondering why the confusion, she had explained everything to the girl while dressing her in the wedding attire. "Your bag is beside that table, I will leave now. We have too much work tomorrow. Kal muh-dikhai hai, aur phir aapko halwa bhi toh banana hai na kal subha nashte me" Naintara explained Geet.
"Aur haan, make sure it is drank" Naintara informed pointing towards the glass filled with milk. Geet could only nod her head; her eyes darted around the room for she could no longer glance at Naintara.
Geet stared in shock, her eyes wide open, as she watched Naintara lean in and kiss her forehead wishing her goodnight before walking out of the room. Geet sat still in shock, confusion and amazement at the behavior of this stranger who instructed her to call her 'Didi". She could not believe it; she hesitantly raised her hand and touched her forehead, tears falling down her eyes as she was reminded of her mother after so many years….. the one person who had loved her, the one person who use to wish her goodnight every night by kissing her forehead. She stood up and walked towards her bag, took out her white kurta she wore for bed and walked towards the door Didi had pointed as the bathroom. She was in a trance as she replayed the moments spent with Didi, every word, every gesture she gave Geet reminded her of her mother…..
"Ma…. Yeh Pati kya hota hai" 5 year old Geet asked her mother.
"Pati woh hota hai jo aurat ko pura karta hai" Rano answered wondering why her daughter wanted to know about it.
"Kya Pati bura hota hai Ma? Kya woh bohut marta hai, Baba and Daarji ki tarha" Geet asked as she nestled in her mother's arms. She did not understand the definition her mother gave her of Pati.
"Aapse kisne kaha Pati bura hota hai?" Rano asked her as she hugged her daughter.
"Brij Bhaiyaji ne kaha, he said he will tell Baba to send me to my pati and then my pati will beat me and will make me work and take away all my books" Geet informed her mother lifting her head from her mother's shoulder. "Kya woh sahi kehrahein hai Ma? Kya Baba humme sach me Pati ke paas bhejdenge?" Geet asked her mother as tears welled up in her eyes with the fear of getting beaten by pati.
"Arreh meri beti, don't listen to your brother. No one will send you away till I am with you. Aur pati itna bura nahi hota, agar kabhi aapko aapke pati ke paas bhejde toh aap unka ache se khayaal rakhna, unki har baath maanna, unhe kush rakhna. Agar aap yeh sabh karlo gi toh shayad woh aapse pyaar bhi kare" Rano explained her daughter. She did not believe in filling her daughter with tales of prince charming coming and whisking her away to a life filled with love. Rano did not want to give her daughter an illusion, a hope that will be broken when she sees the reality of the world. She did not want her daughter to bear the hurt and loss as she herself had to face when she realized how different life was from the fairy tales, how different the prince charming was in real life.
"Jaise aap humse pyar karthi ho waise Ma?" Geet asked her mother as she rested her head on her mother's shoulder again, sucking on her thumb.
"Haan meri Pari, bilkul waisehi par kya pata shayad aapka pati aapse humse bhi zyaada pyaar kare" Rano answered her daughter, placing a kiss on her forehead. She sighed and prayed to god for her daughter's unknown future.
Geet drifted off to sleep with the memories of her mother which seemed to suddenly surface from inside her heart where she had hidden them but looking at Naintara, seeing the same affectionate smile and care in her eyes had reminded her of her mother. She had long forgotten the good times of her life she had spent when her mother was alive, for the past ten years she had lived trying to forget all those good memories and she was successful in forgetting everything about her mother but now they were all coming back to her….
