Part 4
It had been over a week since he had heard her voice and memories had haunted him. He was once again the last one to leave the hospital from his team and was making his rounds checking on how his patients did through out the day and checking in with the nurses to make sure each of them had eaten and if they had any side effects from the heavy medications they had to be on. When he stopped by the emergency department to follow up on one of his patients who had come in because they had had a fever and night sweats and were worried of a possible infection. He told them that he was happy with her white cell counts and that most likely the infection wasn't as bad as it seemed but that he was glad they had brought their daughter in and that they were going to admit her and keep an eye on her as they didn't want to risk her recovery. Her parents were immediately relieved that Dr. Sid shared the same concern they had for their daughter and told him so. Sid was walking to the nurses station to get the admit and transfer orders filled when he felt a snag on his pant leg. While filling out the forms he shifted his leg to try and dislodge it from the object it was snagged on but it did no help. Sid tried again still to no avail. Finally, he glanced down and he found to his pleasant surprise that the snag on his pants was not because of it being stuck to something, but because there was a pint sized nugget tugging on his leg. In fact it was the nugget had the same single toothed grin and sparkling eyes that he had seen last week.
Sid laughed out loud upon seeing the little boy and once again crouched to pick him up in his arms as he said, "Well if it isn't Junior. While I must say it is pleasure to see you I must also ask why you are here." The boy grasped Sid's face between his two tiny hands and garbled something out in excited glee before he leaned forward and wrapped his tiny arms around Sid's neck and gave him a tight hug. Sid was initially amused at the way the boy had grasped his face, but when the boy proceeded to hug him Sid's heart squeezed in happiness at the trust and innocence this little one had bestowed upon him after one meeting. Sid patted the little boy's back as he continued to scan the ER looking for a frazzled mother. But there was no one to be found at first glance, Sid gave his papers to the nurse and started to walk through the Emergency department and as he walked past various beds he tried to find the boy's mother. It wasn't until the third module when the boy whispered solemnly, "Shhh...Mumma's sleeping." Sid's eyes automatically looked at where they boy was pointing and he took in the scene before him where he saw the young woman sleeping awkwardly in a chair next to a crib which held a precious baby in swaddled in pink who seemed at the moment comfortable. Sid's eyes went back to the woman who was clearly only sleeping because of exhaustion she had on hand on the baby's back and the other clutched the hand of a...stuffed teddy bear? And Sid realized that this was how the sneaky con artist in his arms had managed to escape his mom without awakening her. He had to admit that he felt a slight prickle of pride at the ingeniousness of the little boy.
Sid stayed within site of the young woman as he tried to find the nurse which was taking care of her bed, and when he did he asked her how long they had been in there and if the young woman had ever left the bedside. When his suspicions were confirmed that the woman had been there since the night before and that she had not left the bedside of the baby except to go the bathroom and that she had only eaten dinner when the nurse herself had fetched it, he knew that he didn't have the heart to awaken her to let her know that the boy was with him. He also knew however, that if he left the boy near his mom he would either awaken her or sneak away again. So he decided to take action himself, he told the nurse to let the young woman know when she woke that the boy was with him in the kid's play area. He then pulled out a piece of paper from his white coat upon which he wrote, Siddhant, is with me Dr. Sid I'm the man who found your 'conartist' of a son, or should I say he found me, last week when you came into the clinic to fill out paper work. I have taken him to play area and will keep an eye on him. You can have the nurse page me, or here is my cell number. He then turned and set off with the chattering toddler to the play area.
The woman in the chair woke up due to the pain shooting through her neck, she slowly turned her head from side to side to try and work out the knot and as she did she tried to figure out where she was. She took a quick look around and realized that she was at the hospital, then it all slowly came back. The panic she had felt yesterday, the mad rush to the hospital, sitting by her baby for almost 24 hours waiting to be transferred and to talk to the doctor. She must have dozed off once the baby had settled down after 16 hours straight of fussing. She glanced over at her daughter and smiled at how peaceful she finally looked, it was when she was sleeping that she truly looked like an angel sent from above. After reassuring herself that her daughter was okay she glanced to the chair her son had fallen asleep on, as she turned her head she realized that she must have fallen asleep holding his hand and her smile grew she glanced towards her hand only to find a...TEDDY BEAR!!! Her heartbeat picked up and her panic level increased exponentially she glanced all around the small cubicle did not hear, see or sense her son anywhere. She stood up and hit the nurse's call button when her eyes fell on a note. She grasped the note as if it were lifeline as she read the words her heart started to come back to normal and when the nurse arrived she was almost sane again. When the nurse confirmed what the note said and reassured her that 'Dr. Sid' was a great doctor and that the kids loved him she started to feel slightly better, she asked the nurse to sit with her daughter as she went on a search for her son. As she half ran towards the floor the nurse had told her about she remembered the one and only encounter she had had with the doctor whose name apparently matched that of her son's. And as she recalled that last meeting how he had laughed at her drooling son, how he had gently picked him up, how he had grabbed her bags and found a space guaranteed to occupy her rambunctious son. She remembered the kind heart she sensed and those eyes filled with dark pain. And by the time she reached the play area she had calmed down to the point where she was almost comfortable again. She entered the play area and what she saw gave her pause in the doorway.
Sid had taken Siddhant, whom he now affectionately called Jr, to the play area who upon seeing the kingdom of fun had gotten bug eyed and wiggly with excitement. He motioned for Sid to set him down, which Sid happily obliged, and Jr proceeded to take his hand and drag him from one station to the next. They raced toy cars, built tall buildings out of blocks only to demolish them as if they were Godzilla, they played catch, sword fighting, went back to racing cars and blocks again they had eaten a snack of cheese and crackers and finally decided it was time to settle down with a few story books. Sid walked over to one of the giant bean bags and fell backwards with a "poof" one of them, Jr followed suit only to actually land on Sid's stomach instead of bean bag causing him to lose his breath. Once Sid had regained breath again, he picked up Jr and set him in the crook of his arm and picked up one of the many story books he had previously picked out and started to read to him. Time flew and the pile of books read grew. The nurses would come in and check on both of them every so often ask the kind doctor if he needed any help or if he wanted them to watch for him. But he always turned them down and told them that he had it under control. The latest nurse had popped in her head to ask if they needed anything when she saw the most adorable sight she simply stood and watched for a few minutes before turning away to tell the other nurses what she had seen. It was that same scene that the boy's mother walked in to see an hour later.
Avni had walked into one of the most precious moments she could have ever imagined. There across the room on a beanbag was her son and the doctor. Both were sprawled out lost to the world. Siddhant was curled up against the tall man with his head on the doctor's chest lost in dreamland. The doctor had his arms wrapped around her son's as if he were protecting him while they both slept. There was a book left resting on both of them telling her they had both fallen asleep mid story. She glanced at the clock and realized that it was almost 11pm and that explained why her son was knocked out, she wondered to herself why the doctor hadn't gone home, he must have a family that was waiting for him. She slowly approached both guys trying not to startle Siddhant awake, for she knew that if he did awaken he wouldn't go back down again for hours. However, she needed to get the Doctor awake to thank him for taking care of her son while she slept and to let him know he could return to his own family who were probably getting worried themselves. Avni was only half way across the room when something stirred the big man awake.
Sid felt something buzzing against his thigh, he shifted only to realize he could only shift so far. That there was something warm and heavy lying across his chest. He tightened his arms around the comforting weight and tried to settle back into sleep. But the buzzing persisted and so he reached towards it only to come to the realization that what was buzzing was his phone. He slowly blinked open his eyes while he pulled out his phone. He tried to focus on the room around him and at first he had no idea where he was or for that matter what he was on. Once he got his eyes to fully open he realized that he was in what looked like a kid's room as he continued to survey he realized that he was actually in the playroom of the hospital. He picked up the phone and said hello. "Superboy!!! Where are you?? It's almost midnight and you didn't even call to say you were late. Is everything all right, oh why am I even bothering you wouldn't tell me if there was. I'm coming right now, I'm coming to you...wait where are you? Are you on the road stranded somewhere or still at the hospital? No you wouldn't be at the hospital if you were then you wouldn't have not called me. I'm going to call OnStar and get them to locate your car for you. Wait if you're awake then why didn't you? You know there was a reason I splurged for it as your birthday gift." Sue paused to take a breath and Sid knew even in his groggy state that if he didn't jump in now then Sue would have the Houston PD searching for him all over the country.
"Sue! I'm fine! I promise I'm at the hospital as I was leaving I got a case in the ED and went to check on my patient and I must have fallen asleep as I finished up." As he said the words he tried to get up from where he was lying, but there was something heavy preventing him from doing so. Before he could investigate what it was he heard the silence on the other line and he knew he had to convince his sister otherwise everyone would be in trouble. So he continued, "Sue, I've been here the whole night in fact many nurses saw me and can confirm that I have been. Just call any of the night nurses on the Peds floor and they'll tell you I have been here the whole time and that I am perfectly fine. Call them and then you can call me..." Before Sid could finish the sentence he felt something poking his nose. He mentally took account of all ten of his fingers and they were all accounted for and none of them where in his nose. Sue was rambling on the phone but he was distracted by the magical eleventh finger digging around in his nose, he glanced down slowly and he found that the finger belonged to another hand and that the hand belonged to the thing that was keeping him from getting up. He realized that the weight that had been restricting him was the little boy he had picked up from the ER, Jr. Sid slowly removed the finger from his nose and set it back down and at the same time told Sue Good bye and that she could call him back after the she called the nurses if she still had any doubts. He was about to resettle back down and let Jr sleep for a bit longer before he tried to get up, when he had a sudden thought that the boy's mother might have awoken and could be frantically searching for him. So he started to brace himself so that he could rise without disturbing the boy when he had the sudden feeling that he wasn't alone. He turned his head towards the door and saw the woman. She had a serene look on her face and smile on her lips. Upon making eye contact with him her face registered shock and her lips formed a slight O.
Avni was trying to stand as still as possible so as not to disturb either man hoping that the doctor would fall back asleep so that in his jostling he wouldn't wake up Siddhant. But when he started to reach into his pocket and his eyes started to flicker she realized that it was hopeless. She didn't want to scare him with her presence since it would guarantee Siddhant's awakening so she stood and waited fro him to finish his conversation with the person on the phone. He could tell by the exasperation on his face that the person on the other line was raking him over the coals for not calling her and for being late. She figured it was his family, his wife, but when he told her he fell asleep at his desk and not where he was actually at she started to wonder why he would hide something like that from his wife. But before she had a chance to dwell on it her son made his grand entrance into both of their fields of vision. She saw Sid pause midsentence and then glance down and when she followed his eyes she realized that her son had stuck his finger in his nose. She was both mortified and tickled she didn't know whether to cover her face in embarrassment over what her son had just done or to let out the laughter that was building up at the site of the shocked doctor with a finger up his nose that wasn't even his. The laughter was about to win by a landslide when he suddenly turned his head towards her and made direct eye contact with hers and the laughter that was building in her was suddenly swallowed and she couldn't keep her jaw from dropping. For when those eyes looked directly into yours you couldn't turn away even if you wanted to.
Sid slowly got up making sure not to jostle Jr, he kept his grip on the boy secure and he slowly approached the boy's mother. She didn't say anything nor did she move from her spot. He tried to not show his embarrassment or his nervousness at what she might have to say for taking her son without her knowledge. Instead all that appeared on his face was a chagrined smile as he tried to explain himself, but before he could get anything out the woman recovered. "Oh, I'm sorry I didn't mean to wake you I just came because the nurse told me a doctor had brought my son here while I slept", she finished with slight embarrassment. Sid nodded his head, "Thank God, you talked to her. I'm glad I thought you were going to blast me for kidnapping your son or something. I was filling out paperwork at the desk and he came up and started tugging on my pants, so I picked him up and looked for you. When I found you were passed out cold on the chair and he was wide awake. I figured if I left him there with you he would only wander off again and who knows where he'd end up, and you were looking so peaceful asleep that I didn't have the heart to wake you up. So since I had some time to spare I thought I'd bring him here and keep him occupied until you woke up, of course it seems as though we partied too hard and knocked out ourselves," Sid finished with a reddening face. Avni watched the doctor try and dig himself out of a hole that didn't exist she watched as his face turned redder and redder finally she decided to save him so she interrupted him. "No. No blasting from me, only my eternal gratefulness for keeping this guy occupied while I finally got some much needed sleep. And an even bigger thank you for entertaining him so much that you got him to go to sleep. Now I will just take him off of your hands so that you can return home to your family." She reached out her hands to take her son, but Sid shook his head to decline and told her, "No I got it, I can carry him back to the room no need to risk waking him up in the shifting." He saw her start to protest but he distracted her by asking her, "Did your daughter finally get admitted upstairs? If so I can get the nurse's to grab an extra cot for Jr here and then there will be no chance of him waking up till tomorrow." Upon hearing the reminder about her daughter Avni was once again embarrassed at being caught as a bad mother for she had completely forgotten about her daughter. She started to turn back towards the ER to check on her but after taking a step forward she remembered Siddhant and turned caught between her two children and what to do.
Sid saved her from the dilemma by taking his free hand and grasping her elbow and leading her out of the room towards the ER. As he led her to the bed her daughter was in he told her not to worry he was fine carrying Jr until they got there. Upon hearing the doctor call her son Jr she looked up at him suddenly with a confused face Sid glanced down and saw the confusion, "What? Oh the Jr? Sorry I hope I ddint offend you it's just that, oh wait I guess we were never really introduced huh? It just seems as though I have known you for a long time that it didn't even occur to me that I needed to tell you my name." Avni watched as the doctor once again started to ramble, she would have never have guessed that he would have been a rambler. It was quite adorable to watch but she hoped he would get to the point soon she was tired and wasn't sure how long she would be able to stay focused on the conversation going on. Fortunately Sid got to the point, "Anyways, so the reason I call this little guy Jr is because my name is Siddhant too. Hi, I'm Doctor Siddhant Modi." Avni nodded her head in recognition realizing why the doctor called her son Jr and she stuck out her hand to grasp his and told him her name, "Nice to meet you, officially, Doctor Siddhant. I'm Avni Mehra and you've clearly met Siddhant and this is my daughter Mahi" she ended by pointing at her daughter who was peacefully sleeping in the crib they had left her in. Sid smiled upon seeing the innocent angel sleeping and corrected Avni, "It's nice to meet you Avni, but please call me Sid. No one calls me Siddhant anymore." Avni would have missed the change that came over the doctor's face if she wasn't watching him. When he told her 'no one called him Siddhant anymore' his eyes had lost the light in them, they ahd turned cold and dark and he seemed lost for a second in an unpleasant place far away. But then he blinked and it was as if it was never there in the first place.
Sid realized that Mahi still hadn't been transferred up so he told Avni to hang on while he went to find out if he could get things moving along. He had talked to the admitting floor and got everything straightened out and came back to walk up with Avni and the baby, while still carrying Jr. As they got the baby settled in her new room and they talked to the nurses and doctors on the floor and time flew as they got to know each other. It was as if they both had found the one person they were supposed to meet at this moment in their lives.
