Part 2
Sid got home at his usual time and headed straight to the kitchen to grab a quick bite to eat before he headed to his room. Like every night when he came home the light to the kitchen was left on and he shook his head at what he knew he would find when he entered. He set his coat, bag and keys on the table in the living room and headed into the kitchen where the table was already set with food, water and an occupied seat across from him. Even though he was dead tired he felt his heart lift in love at the woman who no matter how many times he told her not to worry, would. He went up to her and gave her a quick side hug as he started to give her his 'You should have gone to bed' speech, but she cut him off with, "Don't even bother you should have learned over the years that I will not go to bed before you come home because otherwise we both know you won't eat a single thing. Besides I like waiting for you I get to get my paperwork and reading done while I wait for you, and then I get some quality time with you while you eat. If I didn't wait up for you then I'd never see you, I don't even see you at the hospital." Sid smiled guiltily because he knew everything she said was true.
Sid rolled up his sleeves and sat down across from the one person who kept him sane on his bad days. He started to eat as she shared her day with him and he inevitably told her about his, because he knew she wouldn't let him go without hearing something about his day. As he finished talking about Dhuval and how he was glad he was getting to go home he found himself start to talk about the boy that had run into him and his frazzled mother. When he looked up at the woman across from him he knew he had made a mistake, her eyes were staring back at him in shock and curiosity. He tried to get out of there as fast as possible but she stopped him by grabbing his wrist and saying, "Superboy! Don't you dare run out of here. You know I'll just chase you down and attack you with your arch nemesis, my fingers." And with that she emphasized her implication by raising her hands and wiggling her fingers. Sid started cracking up as he remembered the countless times she had gotten her way just by tickling him. Out loud she said, "Okay I surrender." She sat back and crossed her arms victory etched on her face. Sue thought to herself, It's nice to see bro so relaxed and to finally see that carefree laughter back. It seems as if it has been forever since he cut loose a little. He's still not the Superboy that I had left three and half years ago, but at least he's no longer the Sid that came back three years ago. Sue simply sat back and enjoyed this moment with her brother and continued the atmosphere by bringing up old stories from high school and college. The two laughed and teased and eventually Sue couldn't keep the yawn off her lips, Sid caught the action and he immediately started to push his chair back as he said, "It's getting late and we have to get to the hospital early we should go to bed." Sue got up and gave her brother a proper hug and they both left the kitchen and headed towards their respective rooms.
Sid changed his clothes and headed straight to the place he spent all his nights, at his desk at home. Sleep was a rare entity to him and the only way he was ever able to go to bed was to literally exhaust himself to sleep. So he set about working on a research project he had started to replace the last one he had finished. Since he finished most of his paperwork in his office his nights were free and needed occupation so this had become the norm for him in the past three years. But tonight as he sat to work on his current project he couldn't get himself to focus. His mind continued to wander at the day's events first at thinking he had heard her voice and then the little boy who felt so right in his arms, and finally the frazzled young mother. One by one he recalled the events of the day and they ultimately triggered the nightmare that was his past. He didn't want to think about that especially not at night, it meant that he would get no shut eye, so he walked out to his balcony hoping the cold air would keep him from getting lost in his past. But it was useless, once the memories were triggered there was no escaping them he could only try to hold on and hope that he made it through less damaged then he went in.
It was raining and he was coming home from a convention that seemed to have been much longer than three days. As the rain pelted against the windows it reminded him of the night he had gotten a small glimpse what life without her would feel like, what he would become if he ever lost her. As he waited for the traffic light to change colors he couldn't help but close his eyes and thank God for only giving him a glimpse and not making it permanent. He thanked God that He let him get there just in time to bring her back to where she belonged. In the land of the living with her family and me her husband. He thought back to the past few weeks how Riddhima had seemed to undergone a change. Before their honeymoon she was always anxious to seem him, she couldn't go to bed without telling him about her day, she would search the hospital for him so that they could go home together. And recently it seemed as though he would search not just the hospital but their home as well and never find her. And whenever he finally did she was always lost in thoughts that disturbed her and whenever he tried to ask her about it, tried to get her to tell him about it, she would just cry tears of anguish that made him want to find the culprit and tear him apart limb from limb for the pain he was causing her. All he ever got out from her was, "I'm human too. I too make mistakes." He couldn't figure out what kind of mistake she could have possibly made that would make her think that he would stop loving her. But no matter the amount of reassurances he offered her she refused to tell him.
When he had told her that he had to go to the convention, that he had tried everything to get out of it, but he couldn't get out of it as the case report they were presenting on behalf of Sanjeevani was his patient. She had started trembling as if she were afraid and had simply broken down as if she thought something bad would happen. He tried to reassure her, but nothing seemed to calm her down. Finally he talked to Dad and asked if he could bring her with him as she too was a Doctor on staff. Upon hearing his request Shashank seemed ecstatic at the thought of showing off two of his favorite students and when Sid had gone to tell Ridz she nearly crumbled in relief. She had gone straight to the closet and started packing as if she were afraid something would make him leave without her. Sid had tried to get her to stop as they still had a week before the convention but it was a lost cause. So instead he sat on the bed and took the clothes she pulled out of the closet and folded them and placed them in the bag for her. She had finally started acting sort of like the old Riddhima, the Riddhima the night of their second marriage, she no longer denied hunger and she actually talked without riddles and most of all she had stopped crying and looking over her shoulder. But it seemed as though it wasn't meant to be. It seemed as though fates wanted Sid, and Sid alone, to go to the convention and for Ridz to be here at Sanjeevani. Because the night before they were set to go three of Ridz's patients started crashing and they had gone to the hospital to save them. They had spent all night stabilizing the patients and they had barely managed it. Sid and Ridz both knew that there was no way she would be able to leave the hospital at this time as she was the expert in their conditions, it was the reason they had come to Sanjeevani in the first place.
So Sid took her aside and told her that he knew she wanted to go with him and he wanted it too, but she was needed here more as not just these three lives, but the three lives they carried inside of them, were all depending on her. He promised to call her every night and that she could always call or text when she missed him. As he spoke what they both knew he saw the understanding and even the agreement in her eyes. But as her eyes noted something over his shoulder they shot back to his and he saw fear replacing all former emotions. He turned to look over his should but there was nothing out of the order it was simply the hospital staff going about their duty. So he just turned back to her and tried to reassure her with tight hug and kiss on the top of her head and told her I love you and that he'd be back soon. As the light changed to green Sid put his foot on the gas and he headed home with hope that the time away helped Ridz find her balance again and that she would no longer have the fear in her eyes or the tears on her face.
Sid was half way home when his phone rang, he figured it was Riddhima so he answered with, "How much love you must have for me. For I am only fifteen minutes away from you and you couldn't wait that long to hear from me. How sweet." The smirk on his face was immediately wiped off when he heard the voice of the other woman currently in his life, "Sorry Sid it's not Riddhimadi, it's me Shilpa." Sid tried to recover but only managed to stutter in his embarrassment and Shilpa took pity on him, "It's okay Sid I won't tell Riddhimadi the sweet words you were telling me, it will be our little secret." She ended with a laugh. Sid retorted with, "You better not! So to what do I owe the pleasure of hearing from you at this time of night?" Instead of hearing quick smart retort Sid only got silence on the other end. He waited a few more second but when he didn't hear anything he tried to prompt her some more, "Shilpa what is it? Is something wrong? Are you in trouble? You obviously know you can tell me that's the reason you called me in the first place." Shilpa let out a sigh with a, "Yeah I'm in deep trouble. So deep I don't know whether it's a good thing or a bad. And yes that is exactly why I am calling you. Sid you have become such a close friend to me in such a short time. It seems as though I have known you forever and that is why now when I am starting to take one of the biggest leaps of my life I am talking to you first. Because I know you will listen with a open heart and mind and you will always tell me if what I am doing is right or if I'm just being a coward." Sid could tell with that lead in that what Shilpa had to talk about was something serious so instead of struggling to pay attention to the road and the conversation he pulled over and gave Shilpa his full attention.
"You know I will always stand by you Shilpa, you are my friend and to me friendship is above all else. Go on unburden yourself not only will you feel better, but maybe we can figure out how to fix your problem." Shilpa sighed in relief upon hearing the confident, supportive voice of Sid and so she continued, "I'm...I'm ...falling in love with Armaan." She rushed out the words and then closed her eyes tight as she waited to hear Sid's response to her confession. Sid couldn't stop the smile from forming on his lips, he had wanted Armaan to find love again, he wanted Armaan to find with someone what he had found with Ridz. He wanted Armaan to find a new reason to live, an new woman to love for his heart had so much to give. And after he had met and gotten to know Shilp he had hoped that that woman would be Shilpa. But for it to have happened so quickly, for Shilpa to feel the same way about him made Sid ecstatic not just for his friend but also for the man that become like brother to him. While Sid had all these thoughts of happiness going on inside his head and heart Shilpa on the other end of the phone started to get nervous and antsy she began to worry that Sid was thinking that she wasn't good enough for Armaan. She had known that he was too good for her, that his heart held too much love and she wasn't worthy of it. She was about to tell Sid that he doesn't need to say anything that she knows that Armaan only thinks he loves and that he will soon realize it and move on to someone more deserving. But before she could tell him to just forget it Sid started to speak.
"Shilpa, is this why you are in trouble? Because you are falling for Armaan? Shilpa you should be happy at the thought of having love in your life. Wait, unless Armaan doesn't feel the same way. Does he? If he doesn't I'll talk to him and if he hurt you in any way I will beat him up for you. To tell you the truth I love Armaan like a brother but he can be a jerk, and you are too sweet for him. HE is the lucky one, he's lucky because you are willing to put up with his mood swings and his need to argue for the sake of arguing." Sid paused to take a breath during which time Shilpa had managed to recover from the shock she had received upon hearing his words. She thought to herself, Sid says that Armaan is the lucky one? That he will beat him up of he hurts me? That I am the saint for putting up with Armaan?? Sid continued, "I must admit that I had hoped you and Armaan would fall for each other, that you would be the woman that would help in see that the world does go on when we lose someone we love, that there is more to life then what we have lost. That we need to learn to look towards the future even if it doesn't seem so bright. I knew when I saw you stand by him during some of his darkest moments that you had the strength to pull him trhough it and that you would bring him into the real world stronger and healthier than before. I must say Shilpa hearing this news has made me probably just as happy as Armaan was when he heard you tell him."
Shilpa was basking in the loving words her unknown Jeeju was telling her. She had always wanted siblings and had always thought of her older sister, never a brother. But in Sid she had found that brother's were just as good if not better. For they saw the world so clearly when it came to their sister's things were either right for them or not, and if anyone dared hurt one of them they would simply beat them up for you. And Sid didn't even know that he was related to her by marriage, he cared for her this much and they were only friends. Riddhimadi is indeed a very special woman to have found a husband that not only loves her unconditionally, but who has such a big heart that he shares that love with people who could be considered strangers. But as upon hearing Sid's last line Shilpa roused herself from her basking and she said, "Sid, no. Armaan doesn't know yet. I haven't told him. In fact, I have known for a while that I was starting to fall for him, but I never told him because I thought he only saw me as a friend at best. But the other day we were at a party thrown at the hospital welcoming the new interns and he took me aside and told me he loved me. I couldn't believe it, I knew he was starting to like me and that maybe maybe he was starting to feel something more. But he up and told me he loved me, I wanted to tell him that I loved him too, but I chickened out. I couldn't quite believe that what he said was true, it was so dream like. So I called in sick yesterday and had today off. I haven't seen him since that time, he called me a few times, but I just couldn't find the courage to tell him. Then I remembered you telling me to call you If I ever needed anything so I thought I'd give you call. Now I'm glad I did."
Sid smiled at hearing poor Shilpa's plight, he remembered vividly how torn up he was about telling Ridz he loved her, about whether her love for him was real or not. He wouldn't want anyone to go through the agony of that unknown, and yet he knew that sometimes there was not other way. That you had to face these unknowns so that you could find out not just how strong your feelings are but how strong your relationship is. So he simply told her, "Well there's no way to find out but to follow your heart. You will tell him when you are ready, and if his love his true then he will be patient enough to wait for you tell him when you're ready. As for calling me, you never need a reason to call me Shilpa, I have told you we are friends and friends have the right to bend each other's ear whenever they wish to do so. And you most definitely bette r call me if you have something important to discuss. Do you feel better? Or is there something else you want to talk about?" Shilpa smiled at her sweet Jeeju if he was standing in front of her she would have given him the biggest bear hug not just for his kind words and heart, but for simply being who he was. Instead she settled for words that were no where close to what her heart felt, "You are smart man my friend, and I am glad I was a smart enough woman to have called you tonight. And I hope you realize that you have just opened up the biggest can of worms for now I will probably be calling you more than your wife does." They both said goodbye with laughter in their voices and smiles on their faces. Sid hung up the phone put the car in gear and headed home to satisfy his heart's desire, his arms' cravings, to hold his wife and tell her he loved her.
