Chapter Eight:
The velvety night sky had shimmering stars punched in allover, Nupur sat quietly in the garden enjoying the pleasant whether and her lone time, which she hadn't got to spend lately. As the soothing breeze caressed her dried cheeks, a positive vibe made its way inside and she felt an overwhelming happiness regulating through her mind and soul.
She took a deep breath and decided to go inside and join everybody. Nonetheless, she knew she would take time to get over the passed few months. Walking through the house's lobby, she glimpsed all the picture-perfect moments that Maasi had clicked of hers and her family. She knew that people come and go, love comes and cherishes us and leaves but family never does. She felt ashamed of the insensitive and selfish manner she had been behaving in, distancing herself from everybody but Maasi and realized that it was time now for her to return and resume her study. Live with her family!
Mayank sipped in his wine, and wrinkled his nose. Rannvijay cozily seated himself on the chair that faced him. When he looked about, he realized that was the only vacant seat. And once again, Nupur who was standing at the back of Dia's chair, holding onto her shoulders could witness the cold vibes between Mayank and Rannvijay.
'Woman, when do you think you would be eating,' Maasi scolded her second-eldest niece. 'It is already 11.'
'Maasi let everybody be done first.' She replied and the long lost smile could be spotted on her lips again.
Maasi smiled at her and continued to eat. She felt a gush a happiness run through her seeing Nupur smiling like that. She knew Nupur really well, and she rejoiced as at last her melancholic niece realized she could not sustain mourning anymore. Mayank even noticed the sudden change in her manner, which he received with utter amazement. However, he felt as rejoiced as Maasi did.
Samrat sat on the first chair from the left facing Dia and adjacent to her, sat Gunjan. Though at first they shared some cold and totally uncivil looks, they realized they couldn't make it through the night that way. Gunjan's love died a silent death a zillion times that night, for she could not make out what parted her and Samrat before they even officially made a confession, maybe he did not just love her.
On the other hand, Samrat understood that Gunjan had started to figure out what changed the amiable and flirtatious Samrat Shergill into a ruthless and indifferent jerk, who looked for magazines when a girl who loved him thoroughly let a tear roll down the cheek he once wished to kiss. He couldn't believe himself, and nor could he believe his fate. Cruel!
Mayank was the first person to get up from his seat and remove his dish and glass to the washbasin. 'Thank you for the delicious food, Kapoor Ma'am.' He said solemnly, placing his glass in the dishwasher.
'I'll do it,' Nupur said signaling him to keep the utensils there and let her do. Mayank flatly nodded as he saw her nearing him. She silently started to place the dishes in the dishwasher when she heard him whisper to her that she looked beautiful. She looked up at him wearing a surprised expression and he displayed his dimples in front of her. She smiled back, and Mayank made his way back to the table.
'We shall take your leave now, Ms. Kapoor.' Samrat said, flicking through the same magazine he picked up two hours back.
'Thanks a lot for coming, gentlemen,' Maasi said and patted Mayank's rigid shoulder. Mayank passed her on a smile as he and Samrat bid adieu to everybody and left. Later that night, after Nupur was done cleaning the kitchen she made her way out in the garden and decided to go for a stroll, thereafter.
Amidst the noises of barking dogs, traffic on the main road and a sick disco in the lane, there played a beautiful sound of the breeze that seemed as sweet a melody to her ears. As she walked ahead, the ends of her shawl started to lift in the air. As one of the ends stuck in a motorcycle's rim, she moved back so as to pull it out. There she spotted Rannvijay Rathore waving at her and making his way through a number of cars parked in a row towards her.
'Oh, hi,' she exclaimed.
'Guess, you aren't sleepy this night.' He replied, offering her his hand civilly.
She put her arm under his and they started to move, and talk random. In about fifteen minutes, they were far away from their respective houses and still talking, though they'd parted their hands. 'So, you are in acquaintance with Mayank Sharma?' he asked.
At first Nupur could not frame the right sentence to answer but finally she replied in a yes. 'I am sure the gentleman is liked in the household, is he?' he continued.
'Maasi definitely likes him, Gunjan does that too. I am not sure about Dia, though.' She answered. His expression to this evidently showed his urge to come to know if she liked him too.
'And to me, he seems quite much of a vain man. Though, when he wishes to ' his vanity takes the back seat out the blue,' she declared. 'What about you?'
Nupur noticed that Rannvijay seemed to be making appropriate words out was all the flowing through his mind. He wore a flat expression and answered finally, 'Yes, in fact ' many of our childhood years are spent together flying kites at his house's terrace.'
As they walked forth, he continued, 'With time, people change anyway and we don't make friends anymore. I am the son to late Mr. Sharma's empires general manager. In rank and status we were never the same, but the Sharmas' were particularly intimate with us.'
'Amazing, I dint know.' She replied.
'Anybody hardly does,' Rannvijay said.
'And do you and Samrat Shergill know each other?'
'Well, of course I have heard of him and his father's riches. But we haven't ever met intimately and established any acquaintance.' He said and instantly added, 'One of his hotter-than-the-barbeque sisters studied with me in college.' As he smirked, Nupur made a disgusting face as she did not find any of Suhaani and Mrs. Ray pretty even, let alone hotter than whatever.
They had come so far off that they had to hire a cab and get back home, at three in the morning.
One Month Later
Nupur knocked at her father's door. He had his own library sort of place in which he, the retired father to three lasses spent most of his day reading and writing nobody knew what.
'Come in, sweetheart.' He called her inside.
'How do you come to know it's me, Papa?' she questioned.
'Nobody else wants to come to me in the library, anyway kid.' He joked.
She sat above the settee holding onto his shoulders and they talked of her day at college. It had been two weeks that Nupur had returned; her merit got her admitted into one of the most respected business schools in Delhi while Gunjan pursued a dance course. Dia decided to drop that one year of study as she sincerely wanted to prepare for the IIT entrance. They discussed how much the life of Mr. Bhushan's daughters changed in the past one year.
'Oh, yes darling. Dia wants to study engineering; Gunjan is almost hired as a dance teacher in her own old college and you are back. I couldn't ask for anything more.' Mr. Bhushan exclaimed and kissed his daughter on the forehead.
'Really, Papa, I feel really happy.' She said.
'Me too! Beta, lets for once leave behind the past and move ahead.'
'What do you mean by that?' she cross-examined seating herself adjacent to him.
'I mean that I very know what losing a dear friend feels. You lost your childhood friend, your love and I lost my best-est friend, kid. But do we realize that we can still help it?' he said emphasizing on 'best-est' and the last sentence.
She nodded which meant she asked him to tell her how. Her father smiled at her and continued, 'Beta ' what's gone is gone. Khanna was a dear friend of mine, you and his son were inseparable but do we realize that their souls would rest in piece and rejoice if we cherish the happy days, and do not cry over spilt milk?'
'Guess, we realize that Papa!' she said and rested her head on his shoulder.
'Good, God bless us then.' He finished and got up. 'I've gotten the book you wanted to get from the central library Nupur, go find it in the left rack. I will be back in a while, a phone call to make.'
Nupur got up too and when she neared the left rack, she heard the hinges of the door make a noise and her father declare, 'By the way, there is a marriage proposal made for you, daughter. And it is hard for me to believe that your mother turned it down.' He laughed softly and made his way to the phone through the corridor.
Hey Kanks!
You aren't supposed to wind up this FF this soon. But since I got a proper reason, I guess I can forgive you. Possibly. Let's see. But still, to the public eye, I'm pouting at you.
I love this FF, seriously. And I will miss it. But since you've promised me something, I GUESS it'd be okay. Maybe. But I'll still miss this FF. BAD girl.
You're improving. And I can tell that from the way you write. So, I'm proud. I guess you'd realise that earlier.
Also, I wanted to say that I'm sorry for not having commented earlier.
I'm missing you loads, please take care.
Love you,
Aishwarya
