Chapter Sixteen

It's midnight

You're out of sight

Yet I can see you in my dreams

I'm so full of love

That I'm bursting at the seams

Yet I'm forlorn

Boy, your chance is gone

Geet couldn't sleep. She just couldn't believe what had happened in the car. She had behaved so casually with Maan! She should have slapped him, made him cry, told him that hey, listen, I'm pregnant, and you have no right to turn me out on the streets and make me change jobs and I can actually do whatever I please. But inside her heart, she knew Maan cared. But she did not want to childishly blame the 'other woman'. Maan Singh Khurana was old enough to decide what he wanted-and she wasn't going to comply with him. Except that this time, she had to, not just for herself, but for her baby.

Suddenly, just like it had been two minutes since she was sitting in his expensive car, her trusty alarm clock rang and she sighed and got up. It was easy to make promises, but she was clueless about what her new job would entail. Suddenly a car noisily honked downstairs. Before the landlady could jump upon her, Geet quickly showered, dressed and went downstairs. The car had stopped honking, but she could feel it reeking of the impatience of Maan Singh Khurana. She almost expected him to be sitting there when she opened the door.

Instead she found the face of someone different. A man much younger than Maan, less serious, and with a huge smile plastered on his face. With a yelp she leapt back. The man's face contorted into a confused frown and then relaxed back into an easy-going smile. "Hey, you're Geet right? I'm Vicky. Vicky Khurana."

"You're Maan's brother?" she asked, shocked.

"Sit inside, I'm not going to take advantage of you, if that's what you were thinking," he said jokingly. Geet felt a rush of blood to her cheeks, then composed herself. "I'll call you Pinkface, you blush very easily," he said laughing. Geet said determinedly, "Sir, of what help may I be to you?"

"Hey, no need to be so professional…," he said laughing, "At least let's get acquainted. " Seeing the suspicious look on her face, he laughed. She was so much like Maan, and yet so different. "Look, if you want I'll call Maan right now and ask him to speak to you and verify who I am." Geet felt confused and then realized what a position Maan had put her in. Any damn stranger could come and say he was Vicky Khurana!! But then, he knew her name…there was hardly anyone in the city who knew her…feeling foolish she sat inside.

"Finally…you trusted me," he said. She wondered how someone who laughed so much could be Maan's brother. Vicky Khurana..she'd never heard the name before. She'd always thought Maan was an only child, that was the image he had projected. But then, she'd never known there was a woman in Maan's life.

"I know what you are wondering…why Maan never spoke anything about having a family..well, me and Maan, had a fight when we were of your age, and I left. I've come back now, on Maan's insistence, to patch up, or maybe he suddenly remembered me only because of you."

"Me?"

"Oh yes…Maan has never taken such an interest in any girl's affairs the way he's taken in yours. I think he likes you..my brother may be loud, but actually he's very shy by nature." Then there was silence. Geet pondered awhile. All the time she could feel Vicky's gaze on her face, making her blush even more.

"So this is the girl..Maan.." he thought.."You've chosen better than those airheads in college…"
