~ Part 19 ~
(remember...this story is still in flashback mode.....)
Heer's and Prem's respective homes are bustling with excitement for their upcoming wedding. Prem is happy that at last he will get his love, but as for Heer... She is just moping around in sadness, at having lost her first love, but not knowing that her true love is Prem, who is awaiting her eagerly. Padma and Shashank (Prem's parents) are happy that their son is happy. Heer's parents are happy that their daughter has someone who loves her so much, and who is willing to do anything to make her happy.
It comes to the day of Heer's mehndi. (Heer didnt have her mehndi ceremony for Raj coz he died before that). Meher has been assigned to go and collect the "shagun ki mehndi" from Prem's house. When she reaches there, she sees some decorator putting up strings of flowers all outside the house. Suddenly, the "decorator" drops a whole basket of flowers on Meher's head. When he looks down to see the damage he has done, he is awestruck.
"Kitni khoobsoorat hai woh ladki. Chal, ab main neechey chalke apne aap ko introduce karta hoon" He comes down to talk to Meher. "Hi", he says to her, "Mera naam hai Preet". (yes, the one who dropped flowers on Meher is none other than Preet😃)
"Toh main kya karoon" replies Meher angrily. "Dekho, mere saare baal kharaab kar diye. Ab apne baalon se in phoolon ko kaise nikaaloon?"
Meher walks into the house in a huff, as Preet just smiles after her, dreamily.
"Haye! Mujhe pyar ho gaya us pari se. Love at first sight for me, just like bhaiya fell for Heer" Preet says to himself.
Meher takes the shagun ki mehndi from Padma, and turns around to go out of the house when she again bumps into Preet, who has come into the kitchen for a glass of water. She is about to scold Preet and shout at him for bumping into her like that, when she hears Padma say, "Arre Preet beta."
Meher realises that he is Preet, Prem's younger brother, and gets embarrassed. Apologizing to Preet for bumping into him, she slowly backs away from the kitchen and makes her way out of the house and to Heer's home. Preet meanwhile, just stares after Meher, his eyes fixed on her retreating figure.
Later at Heer's home...

"Madam, aapke honey waale pati ka naam kya hai?" asks one of the ladies who is putting mehndi for Heer. But Heer is busy thinking of Raj and his untimely death, so doesn't reply. Kripa who is sitting just nearby says, "Prem. Uske hone waale pati ka naam Prem hai." And the mehndi-professional writes Prem on Heer's hand, while Heer just sits there in sadness.
Soon, the mehndi ceremony also finishes, and Heer retreats to her bedroom to rest before the haldi and wedding tomorrow. (the sangeet was already over, and not that much of an excited affair)...
As Heer is sitting on her bed, looking at pictures of her's and Prem's sangeet, which have just been printed. Among the lose photos, she finds a picture of Raj, which has been put among the sangeet pictures by mistake. Heer gets sad thinking about Raj again, and then when her eyes fall on the drying mehndi on her hands, the fact that she is getting married to Prem hits her.
In the fit on a moment, she feels she is cheating Raj, so she rushes to the bathroom and tries to wash off the mehndi on her hands, which has Prem's name on it. In the midst of doing that, she suddenly remembers that Raj is dead and will never come back, and starts crying.
Heer retreats to her bed and cries herself to sleep. But when she wakes up in the morning, hoping to see the mehndi light coloured and almost faded as a result of washing it off too early, she is disappointed because the exact opposite has happened. Heer's mehndi has darkened to an almost-black colour.
But Heer just ignores that fact, thinking there is no way that Prem can love her. Heer just remains unaware that infact, Prem already does, and that too, the love is such as no one has ever loved anyone so much before. As Heer is geting ready for her haldi ceremony, the fact that Raj is dead hits her again, but this time she decides to accept her life the way it is. She remains unsure of whether she will love someone like she loved Raj, even though it may not have been her one true love, Raj was her first love and her companion and she could never forget him. Heer decides to try her best to live her future life with Prem.
The rest of the ceremonies including the actual wedding itself - the varnmala ceremony, kanyadaan, gathbandhan, saat phere, and even the bidaai go without a further hitch. Even Heer participates in everything without being distracted by Raj's thoughts.
Heer goes to Prem's house, her sasuraal and after her mooh-dikhayi there, goes to Prem's bedroom, which is now theirs. And Heer sits on Prem's bed, now Prem's and her bed, and awaits him for their suhaag raat.
