part 21

Shilpa couldn't stop from laughing as she held her baby on her knees, bouncing her, and Baby Shona laughed with delight. She stopped from bouncing and brought Shona to her chest, "You know, this is your first real laughter," she told her, feeling pain in her cheeks because of the smile.

Shona looked at her Mommy and giggled. She threw her tiny arm hand as if she was caressing Mommy's chest.

"Sometimes I do have the feeling that you understand every word we say to you," Shilpa said.

Shona smiled at her and then she hid her face in her chest. Shilpa laughed and wrapped her arms around her tiny body.

"What would I be without you?" Shilpa sighed, a loving smile playing on her face and lightening up her eyes. She lay her down into her arms and slowly started rocking her back and forth. Shona wasn't sleepy, but Shilpa knew this was a different way of entertain her. Shona giggled and stuck her thumb into her mouth, sucking it as if it was a candy. "A nice lady will come to see us," Shilpa started talking to her. "You've met her before. She's Mrs. Shah. You cried when she held you, but I am sure you were just cranky that day; weren't you? She will be staying a lot of time with you from now on because I have to go back to work and I can't take you with me," Shilpa stopped and sighed heavily. She refused to think about the day when she would go back to work and not see her baby for many hours. As she looked down, Shilpa noticed she was no longer rocking her and Shona was looking at her with a serious expression on her face.

Meeting her Mommy's smile, Shona laughed and took the hand out of her mouth, throwing it in Shilpa. Her Mommy laughed and held her hand, immediately feeling her strong grip.

"We won't spend so much time together, but I will still love you," Shilpa wanted to reassure her.

The doorbell rang and both of them started.

"That's her. That's Mrs. Shah," Shilpa said and, carrying Shona into her arms, she went to answer the door.

The woman on her porch was shivering and hiding from the rain. She smiled kindly when Shilpa opened the door, "Hi"

"Hi. Come on in!" Shilpa opened the door wider, quickly so that Mrs. Shah could hide from the rain and cold. "It's been raining all day," she sighed.

Mrs. Shah chuckled, "If it weren't the ferryboats, I would have moved some place else."

Shilpa laughed, surprised to hear some one else praising the ferryboats, "I thought I knew everything about Seattle. What's so special about the ferryboats?"

Mrs. Shah tucked herself in her jacket as she giggled like a teenager, "It holds many memories of me and my husband." She smiled when she saw Shilpa's uncomfortable features, "I wasn't the only lucky woman," she said as encouragement.

Shilpa nodded her head in agreement. She was somewhat lucky too. "Let's go in the living room," Shilpa said, showing her the way.

All this time, Baby Shona stayed quiet in her Mommy's arms and carefully watched the new face. Only when Mrs. Shah looked at her for the first time and smiled at her, Shona turned her head and shyly hid her face in her Shilpa's sweater.

"She still doesn't like me," Mrs. Shah noticed, smiling weakly.

"Oh that's just her. She always plays shy when she sees new people," Shilpa wanted to reassure her. "Would you like something to drink? I have tea."

"I think I'd like some," Mrs. Shah smiled gratefully.

Shilpa left, carrying Shona into the kitchen. She took a cup out of the cupboard and filled it with warm tea. Before she picked up the cup, Shilpa shifted Shona in her arms so that she could look straight into her eyes.

"She's a nice lady, I promise," Shona looked at her Mommy as she spoke, "Please, like her."

Shona smiled and grabbed a lock of hair out of Shilpa's hair, holding tightly on it as Shilpa took the cup and returned in the living room. She offered the cup to Mrs. Shah and then she took a seat in a chair, across from her, with Shona on her knees. Shona was facing Mrs. Shah now and that allow her to stare better.

"So, Mrs. Shah," Shilpa cleared her throat nervously. "I am sorry I didn't call earlier."

"Please," Mrs. Shah smiled reassuringly. "First of all, call me Sapna. Maybe it will be easier for the baby if we become more familiar with each other." Shilpa nodded her head, agreeing with that. "Secondly, I think it's nice that you have friends willing to do ' let's call it... dirty work, for you."

Shilpa looked confused at Sapna, not really understanding the meaning of her words. Sapna chuckled.

"I used that criteria myself when my children were little and I had to find them a nanny," she said. "And after we met, I went to another interview and that Mommy had a little boy, a little older than Shona, and she used the same method."

Shilpa understood then what she was talking about. She smiled, embarrassed, and started playing with Shona's dress. "I didn't mean to offend you."

Sapna laughed. "Don't worry. As I said, I used it myself. I know that finding a Nanny for your child is one of the hardest decisions. You don't trust anyone when it comes to your child."

Shilpa listened to her and admitted she was right. "I assume this is one of the risks I have to take."

"It is," Sapna smiled kindly. "That's why, trust me, I take no offense if you install hidden video cameras in the house or whatever high technology they have nowadays."

Shilpa stared at her for a brief moment. She hadn't thought about that. But then she shook the thought out of her head.

"I have one more week off," she said. "Maybe this will be enough for all of us to know each other enough and' get comfortable with each other."

"We can try," Sapna agreed.

Shilpa smiled and then she let out a discreet as she looked down at Shona, "Why don't you go meet Sapna," she softly spoke in her ear. Shona looked up at her and then at Sapna. Shilpa picked her up and took her to Sapna, putting her onto her lap.

Shona wept once when she found herself in a stranger's arms, but then she saw her Mommy sitting beside them and she calmed down.

"I hope you will get to like me, Baby Shona," Sapna smiled kindly at the infant.

Shona stuffed her fingers into her mouth and carefully watched Sapna's features. She looked at Shilpa and then back at Sapna until she finally let out a giggle and threw her hand in Sapna, like saying hi.

Shilpa discreetly sighed with relief. Sapna seemed like a decent person and she did hope she would be the perfect person to take care of her baby when she couldn't.

Shilpa told Sapna almost everything she needed to know about Shona; things like her nutritional plan, her sleeping habits and other regular things that Shona was used to. They also talked about Shilpa's schedule and rules that Sapna needed to respect. Sapna complied with everything. Shilpa gave her a tour of the house, in all this time Shona sat in Sapna's arms and stared at her.

"Is it just me or she's staring at me?" Sapna asked, amused.

Shilpa giggled and nodded. "She stares. That's her thing," she stated and held out her arms for her baby.

Shona started fussing in that moment and calmed down only when her Mommy took her and sat down in their favorite rocking chair.

"This is a good method to calm her down when she wakes up in the middle of the night or when she's too cranky and doesn't want to go to sleep," Shilpa said, cradling the baby into her arms and slowly rocking her. Shona smiled delightfully at her mommy and looked at Sapna only when she heard her voice again.

"I don't want to seem nosy, but' are there other family members I need to get familiar with?" she asked Shilpa.

"Uh' No," Shilpa answered, looking a little uncomfortable with the new topic. "Shona's father is' away," she stammered. "For good."

"Oh," Sapna frowned and the expression on her face made her look pitiful. "I am sorry."

"What for?" Shilpa asked, confused.

Sapna was even more confused than her. "He's dead?" she asked quietly, sounding afraid of being ridiculous.

Shilpa didn't answer right away. She looked away and considered the answer. "Yes," she answered as she looked back at Sapna. "Not the actual person' only her father," she explained.

"Oh," Sapna understood then. "Ok. I didn't ' I hope I wasn't too indiscreet."

"No," Shilpa shook her head reassuringly. "It's good that you asked. He won't even show up around here, so ' you don't have to meet him, but my mother could show up. She usually shows up unannounced. This is actually her house, but she lives in Boston. She teaches there."

"I wanted to ask you," Sapna interrupted her. "Are you related to Muskaan gupta?"

"I am her daughter," Shilpa answered. "Have you met her before?"

"Once," she nodded. "I assisted her when she came for a surgery at Sanjeevani. I can't believe I am going to baby sit her granddaughter," she giggled.

Shilpa just smiled. As usual, talking about her mother or hearing praises about her wasn't her favorite thing to do. "You have met Armaan already," she said. "He's around here most of the time. When he has time. He's also our friend and' very helpful. Armaan is also a doctor and works for Seattle Grace," Shilpa didn't notice she had started rambling.

Sapna smiled suspiciously and from that moment, she was curious to know Armaan better. Their friend. "Other relatives or friends?"

"No," Shilpa shook her head. "So, unless it's my mom or Armaan, nobody else is allowed inside while I am not home."

"Of course," Sapna nodded in agreement.

All three of them started when they heard a wheel screech in front of the house. Shilpa jumped up and looked out the window. There was a gray, unfamiliar car parked in front of her house, but there was no one in it or beside it. Then they heard several knocks in the front door.

Shilpa and Sapna looked at each other, panicked. "Hold her," Shilpa handed Shona to Sapna, so that she could open the window and lean outside. She recognized Anjali pacing on the porch nervously.

"Seriously," Shilpa muttered under her breath.

"Is everything alright? Should we call 911?" Sapna asked, still alarmed.

"No," Shilpa sighed. "That's my secretary," she grumbled and hurried out of the room, going to answer the door.

"He's gone!" Anjali blared out and walked inside as Shilpa opened the door.

"Who?" Shilpa asked, confused.

"Grewal. He's nowhere to be found. He took some of his things from his apartment. Our apartment, which now it might be my apartment. He's not at the hospital either and there people are staring. I hate the staring."

Sapna had followed Shilpa outside, but she didn't have the courage to take Shona downstairs, so she stopped in the middle of the stairs.

"My secretary," Shilpa rolled her eyes sarcastically, introducing her to Anjali.

Anjali nervously ran her hands through her hair before she drew in some air and looked at Sapna. "You're Shah?"

"Anjali," Shilpa snapped at her inappropriate tone. "She's Mrs. Shah."

"I hired her," Anjali pointed out.

Shilpa rolled her eyes and, grabbing her by the elbow, she smiled apologetically at Sapna, "Excuse us for a second," and dragged her into the kitchen. "What are you doing here?"

Anjali froze and stared at her as if she had just woken up from a sleep and she didn't know where she was or how she got there. She sighed and fell exhaustedly in a chair. "He's gone," she muttered, propping her forehead against the table.

"I am sorry," Shilpa softened her voice.

"I didn't know where else to go," Anjali kept muttering and looked up at Shilpa. "You need to teach your daughter not to stare at people. It's rude."

Shilpa knew what she was talking about. People from hospital heard about Anjali ditching her fianc and running away. A huge gossip like this couldn't be ignored; it would feed the appetite for gossips for a long time.

"Maybe' he decided to go in the honeymoon," Shilpa said. "Alone," she added quickly.

Anjali shook her head, not agreeing. "The Chief has his resignation. He let him go."

Shilpa took a seat at the table, across from Anjali, and looked down at her hands as she folded them. "He left because of the wedding?"

No answer came from Anjali, so Shilpa looked up and met her stare, "because of the wedding," Shilpa concluded quietly.

"Now I lost both, my teacher and my fianc," Anjali grumbled.

"At least you had to balls to do what you felt right," Shilpa wanted to encourage her. "Although, I think you could have talked to him instead of running away and hiding." Anjali looked at her with a glare. "I know. I should have knocked some sense into you and make you talk to him," Shilpa said. "What do you want me to do now?"

"Do you have some coffee?" Anjali asked.

"No, but I have tea,"

"Tea is for Shona, not for soothing my pain. Unless you put some scotch in it," Anjali answered. She looked up over Shilpa's shoulder, where Sapna was standing.

Shona started fussing when her Mommy looked at her, so Sapna brought her to her.

"Are you a wise woman?" Anjali asked Sapna.

"Anjali," Shilpa hissed reproachfully.

Anjali ignored Shilpa and continued, "You look like you are. Be honest! How well prepared you are to be this girl's Nanny?" she asked straight.

"Stop it now!" Shilpa snapped at her.

"That's ok," Sapna smiled, visibly embarrassed. "You're probably one of the most direct and sincere person I've ever met. You're kind of rude though, but I am impressed," she stated. She came and sat down at the table, across from Anjali. "I raised my kids and they turned into honorable people. I am quite proud of what I did. As for wise' I like to believe that I am smart."

"You don't have a good impression about yourself and I don't think I like that, but whatever. She's not my baby. I have other problem," Anjali stated and out of nowhere she started talking about how she ran from her own wedding.

Sapna was taken off guard by Anjali's sudden confession. She looked questioningly at Shilpa, but Shilpa shrugged helplessly. Sapna stayed and listened to everything that Anjali was confessing and slowly started replying, giving her thoughts about her situation.

Shilpa and Shona stayed aside; Shona pulling locks of hair from Shilpa's head and Shilpa staring at the two women. She started when she heard the door unlocking. She had even noticed that it was already dark outside and Armaan was home.

"Hey," she greeted Armaan in the hallway.

Armaan smiled and leaned in, kissing her, "Hey," then he took Shona from Shilpa, "How's my baby girl doing?" he laughed as he tossed the baby in the air and Shona laughed with delight.

Shilpa smiled and a warm sensation filled her chest as she heard Armaan talking to Shona as if she was his daughter.

"She's tired," he noticed with regret when Shona yawned sleepily.

"She didn't sleep much at noon and she stayed up the whole afternoon. Mrs. Shah is here," she said.

Just then, Armaan heard voiced coming from kitchen. "Who else is here?" he asked, confused.

Shilpa cleared her throat and smiled as she looked away, "Anjali," she muttered.

"Our friend Anjali," Armaan beamed sarcastically, looking at Shona. Shona giggled and grabbed his nose in her tiny hand. Armaan laughed and brought her back into his arms. "How is she?" he asked Shilpa, referring to Mrs. Shah.

"She's nice and Shona even agreed to stay in her arms for a few moments," Shilpa stated.

"Let's go save her from Anjali's hands," Armaan chuckled.

Shilpa laughed and shook her head disagreeing, "They get along very well, actually."

Armaan's features suddenly became uptight, "In this case, I don't think I like her. We still have some time to find a better Nanny."

Shilpa rolled her eyes, smiling. "You're worse than me."

"You've prepared yourself for this path of your career, so who teaches you is less significant. Seattle Grace has the finest doctors in Washington, so he wasn't the only person prepared to teach you."

That was part of the lecture that Sapna was giving to Anjali when Armaan and Shilpa walked into the kitchen.

"Mrs. Shah," Armaan smiled.

"Dr. Malik," Sapna stood up and came greeting him. "Please call me, Sapna."

Armaan smiled, nodding, "Armaan. Dr. Joshi, I am glad to see you here' again," he smiled sarcastically at Anjali.

"Your disgust, my pleasure," Anjali retorted sharply.

"You two stop now," Shilpa glared at them. "Anjali, you can sleep over if you want to."

"Seriously?" Armaan frowned as he heard that.

"I could stay and help you put all of them to bed," Sapna joked.

Shilpa laughed and nodded. "I don't want to scare you from the first day."

"Ok," she laughed. "I should leave then and I will be back tomorrow morning. Sleep well, Baby Shona," she leaned down to Shona, who was snoozing in Armaan's arms.

"We'll walk you to the door," Shilpa told her and led their way to the door.

"Armaan?" she asked as they stayed in the doorway, watching Sapna's car driving away. "Whose car is that?" she asked, looking at a black car.

"Oh, that," Armaan chuckled and smirked at Shilpa. "Give me your jacket from the hook."

Shilpa looked at him, confused. "Are we going somewhere?"

Armaan just kept smiling, "Give me your jacket."

Shilpa stared at him and refused to comply until he wouldn't explain what he had in plan.

Armaan rolled his eyes and went back inside, taking Shilpa's jacket himself. He carefully wrapped Shona in it and then walked back outside. "Come with me."

"Armaan, where are we going?" she demanded.

Armaan just walked and stopped beside the black car, "Does this look at least familiar to you?"

"No. Should it?" she asked.

"Yes," Armaan gave her an emphasized answer.

"Why?" she asked, still confused, and looked at the car.

Armaan opened the backseats door and looked at her waiting.

"Armaan," Shilpa groaned, still not understanding why it should look familiar to her.

Armaan sighed and put, the already sleeping, Shona on his chest, "This is the place where you were born," he talking in her ear.

Shilpa stared at him in awe.

"Impressive, huh?" Armaan smirked at her.

"Why?" she asked, not looking impressed at all. "Why is it impressive?"

Armaan sighed when he saw she wasn't enjoying the surprise, "You said you wanted a car. The rent car company was more than willing to sell it to me."

"I am not paying for it," she said.

"Then I am offering it to you," Armaan replied.

"I won't drive it,"

"Shilpa," Armaan groaned.

"Why would I want to buy this car? It would be like ' buying a hospital bed or table just because I had surgery on it,"

"But your daughter was born in it," he said, trying to make her accept.

"Besides that, everything else was a nightmare. The pain, the shame of being exposed in front of a strange man," she said, gritting her teeth.

"Shilpa," Armaan chuckled. "You're still feeling ashamed of me after all this time?"

"At that time, I didn't know you," she said. "And it's not just about that. It was a scary evening, Armaan."

"But'" Armaan wanted to say something more, but he was left speechless by Shilpa's refuse of accepting the car.

"It's late and cold outside. I have to get her ready for bed," Shilpa said quietly and took the baby from him.

"Shilpa, I didn't want to upset you or make you sad," Armaan said apologetically.

Shilpa tightly held Shona to her chest, keeping her warm, "Sometimes you do ' creepy things. You can keep it if you want to, I don't mind."

"I am weird," he admitted. "But you are weird too."

"Me?"

"Yes. You. What woman wouldn't want to have the car she gave born to her baby?" Armaan said.

Shilpa laughed sarcastically. "First of all, I am not sure how many women experienced this and secondly, you should feel the hell you go through when you're in labor and then be alone on the street and have a stranger staring at your intimacy. The most important memory of that evening is the moment when I felt my baby lying on my chest and felt her heart beating against mine. Honestly, this car means nothing to me."

Armaan sighed and wrapped his arm around her, leading her and Shona back into the house.

"I appreciate your gesture though," she smiled at him. "Creepy, but' nice too."

Armaan smiled and kissed her on the forehead. "I will drive it."

Armaan wasn't entirely willing of letting go of it either. He nodded and smiled as he saw the blanket he had bought for Shona. He took it and spread it over them.

It didn't take long for Shilpa to drift to sleep, but Armaan stayed there, spoiling himself with their presence in his arms. Only when he started feeling his eyes heavy of sleep, he woke up Shilpa and took Shona upstairs.
